Seguin mourns loss of community advocate

(Seguin) -- When it came to Seguin, Steve Tschoepe always wore his heart on his sleeve. It was that love for his community that still has folks reeling over his sudden death this past weekend.

A local realtor and former Seguin City Council member, Tschoepe is remembered for dedicating his time to several programs and charity efforts throughout the community.

Remembering her friend is Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen. Dodgen says Tschoepe’s intentions have always been to make Seguin an even better place to live, work and play.

“That was Steve. He loved our town. He loved what he did. He was committed. I

mean oh my gosh, there wasn’t anything that he wouldn’t do for somebody,” said Dodgen. Tschoepe gradated from Seguin High School in 1976. Following those years, he spent time working as a photographer and reporter at the Seguin Gazette.

Tschoepe, continued.

After a career in the printing business, Tschoepe spent most of his recent years as a realtor at Century 21-The Hills Realty.

Tschoepe is also being remembered for his two terms on the Seguin City Council.

Tschoepe served the constituents of District 6 from 2004 to 2012.

Dodgen says his leadership roles, however, went beyond his sole responsibilities of being on the

council. She says for years, Tschoepe has been a key player behind the preservation and successful operation of the Texas Theatre located on North Austin Street.

Tschoepe was determined to make sure that the Texas offered events that the entire community could enjoy, everything from music performances to community theater productions.

“I am going to miss him and I know that the Texas Theater is going to miss him terribly. He was organized

and had really high standards and he wanted things to happen and he loved history. He did things for the Texas. He was always there participating in the background ensuring things ran smooth and that the theater was on track and kept up nicely and things were done and that is how he was in everything he did and that is what was so amazing about Steve. It is just a huge void -- a huge void in our community and we are all still reeling from it I know,” said Dodgen.

school year, the district has seen remarkable growth, with 2,467 students enrolled as of January 2024.

“Certainly, when we saw that concrete coming in and really setting that foundation, it’s so exciting to know that that school is being constructed and to know the kids that will be impacted in that building and that our taxpayers have really blessed us with a faith to continue to grow buildings, to grow kids,” said Epley.

District officials say this recent achievement marks a pivotal moment in the realization of the project, which was made possible by the overwhelming support of voters during the bond election held in November 2021.

Epley says the best parts of the journey have been involving the students and community members in this process.

“As the steel is coming in, we know that’s the next step in seeing that building go vertical and that will be exciting as well. We have plans and an opportunity for community members and our teachers and students to be able to sign one of those beams and put our hopes and wishes for what will happen in the building actually on the building and we are looking forward to that as the next step as we move forward but it is truly an exciting time to see that growth in action,” said Epley.

The construction of the new high school comes as a response to the rapid growth experienced by Navarro ISD. From a population of 1,812 students in the 2016-2017

Tschoepe, continued.

Most importantly, Dodgen says her friend was a man of faith who operated with integrity and who always put his family first.

“He is going to be missed. He was a good good friend and I know his family is going to miss him because he was always there for them and church. We are going to miss him at Emanuel’s because he did things. He was involved and that was just him. He participated in his community

This upward trend they say is projected to continue, with Zonda Education forecasting a population of 6,049 students in the district by the 2033-2034 school year.

Epley says not only is the construction underway for the new building but the planning to make the transition of students into the new campus is also in the works.

“At this point, we are looking to November 2025 and our plan would be to look at moving the existing high school over for the second semester if that indeed holds true – you know weather and conditions are certainly something that we hope we have days like we’ve had in these last few weeks so that the progress continues but we will be able to move the high school over for the second semester of that school year and that will give us a semester to prepare the junior high to be ready – that’s the former high school – to become the new junior high facility and so we would prepare that facility, do the rebranding of that facility, clean it out, be ready for those students to start the following year in the old high school as the new junior high,” said Epley.

Groundbreaking for the new Navarro High School took place on September 13, 2023. The new Navarro High School is scheduled to open its doors to students in the 2025-2026 school year.

because he loved it and he loved everybody and I remember him taking Betty Ann Matthies when he was on council and she was Mayor -he helped her do everything. He was her sidekick. They would drive and he would do things with her and he always tried to find solutions,” said Dodgen.

Folks who knew him would agree with Dodgen that Tschoepe simply had a key role in ensuring good things in Seguin. A big supporter of the Seguin ISD, he

served on the board of directors for the Seguin Education Foundation. He was also a board member for the Seguin Conservation Society and the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce. Tschoepe is also credited for his long standing support of the Distinguished Young Women of Guadalupe County program better known in this area as Junior Miss. Funeral services for Tschoepe will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church. Tschope was 65.

Biden Speaks Out Against AL Ruling On Embryos (Washington, DC) -- President Biden is slamming the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling that frozen embryos can be considered children under state law. In a statement today, Biden said the decision is a direct result of the overturning of Roe v. Wade. He said the decision puts access to fertility treatments at risk for families who are desperately trying to get pregnant. Last week’s ruling said embryos created during in-vitro fertilization are “extra uterine children,” and in Alabama are legally protected like any other child. A major Alabama health system is pausing all in vitro fertilization procedures in response to the ruling.

Contagious Stomach Bugs, Including Norovirus, Are Circulating (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC says contagious stomach bugs, including norovirus, are circulating right now and hitting the Northeast especially hard. The CDC says the positivity rate for norovirus, which causes cramps, vomiting and diarrhea, is more than 15-percent in the Northeast, the highest in any U.S. region. A public school in Highland Park, New Jersey was forced to close and undergo a deep cleaning earlier this month because of norovirus. And doctors at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia say several GI bugs are circulating at the same time. If you do get a stomach bug, doctors recommend drinking lots of fluids to keep from getting dehydrated.

NY Attorney General Wants More Stringent FDA Regulations On Singulair (Albany, NY) -- The New York Attorney General wants more stringent FDA regulations on Singulair, a widely-prescribed allergy and asthma medication. Letitia James is calling on the FDA to implement stricter safety rules for Singulair. The New York A-G says the anti-inflammatory drug has been linked to harmful behavioral and mental health issues in children. James points to studies that have documented aggression, depression and even suicides in kids who use it. Merck, the New Jersey-based pharmaceutical giant that manufactures Singulair, is currently being sued by multiple families who say they weren’t warned about the risks.

Bipartisan Coalition Pushes For Lower Drug Costs (Raleigh, NC) -- A bipartisan coalition of 39 attorneys general is calling on Congress to help lower drug costs. North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein and 38 other states are pushing lawmakers to pass legislation that would require pharmacy benefit managers to provide more transparency. The managers create lists of prescription medications that are available through insurance plans. The coalition is accusing the group of cashing in on rebates that they believe should be going toward lower prices. There are at least three bills the states want Congress to approve.
