Full-scale active threat exercise set for today at

Navarro ISD

(Geronimo) – There’s no need to panic today when you see an influx of emergency lights and sirens over in the Navarro ISD Intermediate Campus. That’s because the Guadalupe County Emergency Management Department is taking advantage of kids being on Spring Break and utilizing the campus for a multi-agency Active Threat training site. The training will be held today from 8 a.m. to 2p.m.

Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Coordinator, says the school will only be accessible to registered agencies and volunteers participating in the full-scale exercise. He says the primary goal of this initiative is to bolster coordination and preparedness amongst emergency responders and community stakeholders, thereby fortifying their collective response to real-life emergencies.

Seguin PD set to participate in Operation Lone Star

(Seguin) – The Seguin Police Department is joining a long list of law enforcement agencies that are working to curb illegal immigration issues in Texas.

The Seguin City Council on Tuesday approved the police department’s participation in an interlocal cooperative agreement with other agencies involved with Operation Lone Star.

SPD Lt. Cobey Crow says that border related crime has had an adverse impact on Texas. He says roadways that run through Seguin are being used by criminals who have come across the southern border. Crow says the police department’s participation in the program will allow local officers, when available, to assist other agencies with the fight against some of these illegal activities.

“We are going to assist these other agencies, that are

already involved in the border initiative, that Governor (Greg) Abbott has already started. It is more of a working group. There is no obligation. Our city attorney has looked over the agreement, and there is no obligation. It’s just something that if these other agencies -- they do projects, or you might want to call them operations, once a month and if they need assistance, then they will contact all these agencies. If we can, we can send one officer, two officers, (or) whatever we can handle. At no time is it taking away from patrol or from the citizens of our city. It’s just again if we can help, we can help. And it’s the same thing with us. If we decide to have an operation because we have something going on here in the city, then we can ask for help from them and they will also send officers or deputies,” said Crow.

Registration for Summer Day Camp now open

(Seguin) – If you want to secure your child’s spot in this year’s Just for Kids Summer Day Camp program then today is the first day in which to do so.

The Seguin Parks and Recreation Department will kick off summer

Registration today for its day camp program.

The Just for Kids Summer Day Camp Program operates June 3- August 2, 2024 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Camp will not be available on June 19 or the full week of July 1-5, 2024.

Enrollment is open to all children who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grade, not to exceed 11 years of age.

Enrollment is taken on a first-come first-served basis.

Weekly sessions fill quickly, and early registration is encouraged. There is a $25 registration fee due at the time of registration and the weekly fee is $110.

Drill, continued.

Multiple first-responding agencies in the Guadalupe County Integrated Response team will be participating in this full-scale exercise. Pinder says this collaborative team is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of the community.

County officials say the Guadalupe County Integrated Response agencies collaborate, coordinate, and regularly train to prepare for active threat incidents throughout Guadalupe County. The aim is to mitigate the impact of such incidents and recover from them, safeguarding lives.

They add that volunteers are integral to the success of training exercises, taking on diverse roles to enhance realism. This includes stepping into the shoes of students and staff, immersing themselves in scenarios to facilitate lifelike training experiences. They add that with moulage kits, their participation ensures that emergency responders are better prepared for realworld situations.

Again, the public is reminded that the emergency scene at the Navarro ISD is only a mock training. That training, again, is only scheduled for today.

Register online at seguintexas.gov/summercamp, or by visiting the Parks and Recreation Office at 600 River Drive West, Seguin, TX 78155.

The parks office can be contacted by calling 830-4012480.

Lone Star, continued.

Crow says problems with illegal immigration are already occurring in Seguin. He says over the last year, they’ve encountered several cases involving crimes committed by people who have entered the country illegally. Crow says human trafficking is one of their major concerns.

“We have arrested 20 people suspected of human smuggling. We have transferred custody of over 39 individuals from different nationalities, 18 Mexican nationals, 14 Honduran nationals, seven Guatemalan nationals, and then some other ones that they would not say where they’re from. So, our community is just like thousands of other communities here in Texas.

these other agencies that might require it,” said Crow.

In pooling their resources, Crow says this will help the agencies share intelligence, and help them better coordinate criminal interdiction efforts as they fight against human trafficking and illegal narcotics.

We have this issue and we’re just trying our best to assist -- first and foremost our city and then any of

Q:

I see that you trimmed the plants in front of the Seguin Art League. Is it time to cut back our frozen plants? I know that you usually tell us to not cut them back because it provides cover for the birds and other wildlife as well as protects the plant from more freezes.

A: Well, I guess I’m optimistic and really don’t think we’ll be getting any more hard freezes. Roses and other root hardy plants can be pruned now. My bluebonnets are blooming and the Mexican Plums at the library have blooms (as does mine). My neighbor’s Mountain Laurel has started to bloom and is covered in insects. Other early bloomers according to Doug Welsh, Extension Horticulturist, are pyracantha, spirea, calleryana pear, Eastern redbud, Texas redbud, and Mexican redbud, and Mexican buckeye. It must be Spring, although my redbuds and buckeye aren’t blooming yet.

Q: Do I prune my citrus now also? How do I know whether my citrus has been injured by our freezes?

A: Aggie-Horticulture, in a section on citrus freeze injury and care, suggests that you wait for spring growth before pruning, and the article also suggests waiting until the fruit has set in May. Then you can prune the dead limbs and twigs back to live tissue. The article mentions that your plant might still grow normally and flower for several weeks. Then, when the high summer temperatures hit, it could show stress or die.

Q:

When do I fertilize my lawn? My neighbor is out there today fertilizing.

A: As I mention every year, apply lawn fertilizer after you have mowed the lawn grass twice. (Lawn grass being defined as your St. Augustine, Bermuda, or Zoysia, not that winter grass.) Welsh says that waiting confirms that the lawn grass is actively growing and is ready to use the fertilizer applied. He also suggests applying one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn.

Q: I wish I had a garden but I live in an apartment (or have a tiny yard). What can I do?

A: You can garden in pots (or window boxes, or on the patio). One of my friends has an upstairs apartment. Her pots are on the landing, and when there is a freeze, she brings them inside. Another friend living in a garden home has several large pots on her patio. One pot has a lemon tree and another pot has a tomato plant. This winter my pots held kale plants, so I had fresh kale salad all winter. For the last two months, I have had fresh cherry tomatoes every day from a potted Siam tomato that I moved in and out of the house when we went below 40. The main thing you need when growing in pots is good well-drained soil, full sun at least 6 hours a day, and water. I check every day to make sure the soil is moist.
