Seguin ISD’s new superintendent to appear on KWED’s Saturday Topic
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera(Seguin) – A conversation with new Seguin ISD Superintendent Veronica Vijil comes to listeners of this week’s Saturday Topic program on radio station KWED.
Dr. Vijil joins KWED/Seguin Daily News General Manager Darren Dunn for a candid discussion about her background in education and her plans for the Seguin ISD.
Dr. Vijil was originally hired as deputy superintendent last year. She took over as interim superintendent after the departure of former Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez, who left in September to take a position in the Leander ISD. Dr. Vijil was formally offered the job earlier this year, and the interim tag was removed.
She says being in all those months, helped to better prepare her for the transition into the district’s top job.

Officials say Andrew James Kuehne, 28, was taken into custody at his home on Feb. 22. He is being charged with possession of child pornography of a child younger than 10 years old.

Kuehne has since been fired from his job.
According to district officials, Kuehne was not a classroom teacher but worked as a desktop services staff member who led a team of computer technicians.
Assistant principal at Guadalupe County high school arrested
(Cibolo) -- An assistant principal at Byron High School in Cibolo was arrested for possession of marijuana while on school grounds.
On Wednesday, the Cibolo police officers who are assigned to the school resource office were notified by school administration that they had suspicions that the administrator was in possession of drugs. During their investigation, the assistant principal identified as Joshua Peters, 45, gave
officers consent to search his vehicle. Officers discovered and confirmed the marijuana plus smoking pipe in his vehicle.
Peters was arrested and transported to the Guadalupe County Jail. He faces charges of possession of marijuana in a drug free zone and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Schertz Cibolo universal city ISD officials say they are fully cooperating in the investigation.

“What I have really really enjoyed is that I did get to come in as deputy superintendent and started to make some assessments -- started to just observe, get out the campuses, talk to people, get out to the community and my husband and I chose to live in Seguin right away. It was just a decision that we made and so, it is who we are. We just started to find some things to do in Seguin. Whether it was trivia night that we found, we just wanted to get to know the community because the community is really what drives the district and the community’s
thoughts, the community’s belief system, the community’s values and so, I wanted to see what that is. What do we have in place in our campuses that align with the belief system and the vision of the community because it takes a village,” said Vijil.
The entire conversation with Dr. Vijil can be heard this weekend on KWED’s Saturday Topic. The program airs at 8:20 a.m. Saturday on AM 1580 KWED. Listeners can also listen live online at seguintoday.com. Those with Alexa enabled devices can also access the radio station, by saying “Alexa, play KWED radio.”

Texas Lutheran Sweeps RPI in Midweek Doubleheader
(Seguin) -- Texas Lutheran baseball swept a doubleheader against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute that went late into the Texas night with a 3-2 win in nine innings and an 8-5 win on Wednesday at Katt-Isbel Field to open a four-game series against the Engineers.
Texas Lutheran opened the series in dramatic fashion, opening the doubleheader scheduled for two seven inning games with a walk-off win in nine innings Wednesday afternoon.
After the game remained tied at 2-2 after the scheduled seven innings, the two teams remained deadlocked until the ninth inning where the Engineers walked the bases loaded before a pinch hitting Carson Draehn (Brenham/Brenham) was able to walk it off with a pinch hit RBI bunt single, scoring SCAC Hitter of the Week, Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty).
Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) finished 1-for-4 with a clutch two-RBI triple in the sixth inning.
Nolan McInvale (Poth/Poth) picked up the win in relief to improve to 1-1 on the season.
JT Taylor (Conroe/Fort Bend Christian) started
and allowed two runs, both in the first inning, on three hits while striking out six batters in six innings of work.
The Engineers hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give themselves an early 2-0 lead and that’s where the game would remain until the sixth inning.
Vasquez tied the game with a two-out, two-RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth.
Texas Lutheran would leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh but would redeem themselves with the bases loaded bunt in the ninth.
In game two, Carson Draehn went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Hayden Kesselring (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Carter Conroy (Tomball/Klein Cain) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts to earn his first career win. He pitched in fifth, sixth, and seventh innings and got a big strikeout to end his night.
For the second straight game, RPI scored in the first inning before the Bulldogs responded with an RBI single from Vasquez to tie the game 1-1.
RPI scored another run in the second inning before the Bulldogs took the lead in the bottom of the
inning after Carson Draehn scored on a wild pitch and Cole Cravens (Round Rock/Round Rock) gave the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead with an RBI single.
The Engineers came right back with three runs across the fourth and fifth innings to retake the lead 5-3 after five innings.
Texas Lutheran came back and took the lead in the sixth with a single from Hayden Kesselring tying the game 5-5, before a fielding error from RPI following a Trevor Cones (Stagecoach/Tomball) bunt gave the Bulldogs a 6-5 lead. TLU would add two more unearned runs in the sixth to make the score 8-5.
The Bulldogs (10-6) will be right back at the ballpark on Thursday against RPI at 6 PM at Katt-Isbel Field. All games will be streamed on TLU’s YouTube Channel, TLU+. All streaming and live stats links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.

Alabama Governor Signs Bill To Protect IVF Treatments Into Law
(Mobile, AL) -- Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has signed a bill to protect in vitro fertilization into law. Ivey signed the measure moments after it was officially passed and sent to her, saying that while IVF is complex, she is “confident that this legislation will provide the assurances our IVF clinics need.” Wednesday’s legislation does not define or clarify whether frozen embryos created by IVF have the same rights as children under state law. It will, however, provide civil and criminal immunity for death or damage to an embryo to any individual or entity providing or receiving IVF.
Free USPS Distributed COVID-19 Tests To End (Washington, DC) -- The federal government says free COVID-19 tests and free Pfizer Paxlovid antiviral medication are ending. The USPS distribution is set to end March 8th because the virus has slowed considerably. Officials say they have delivered almost two-billion free COVID-19 tests to the American people and they could return in the future if the need arises. All pandemic-era doses of Paxlovid are also scheduled to stop being dispensed by pharmacies Friday, following a decision earlier this year by the FDA. You can still get free COVID-19 tests through the National Institutes of Health program called ‘Home Test to Treat.’
End Of Immunity For Vax Makers Pushed
(Washington, DC) -- Controversial new legislation would allow anybody who got the COVID shot to sue the manufacturer if they believe the vaccine had negative health effects. The author is Texas Congressman Chip Roy who claims, without scientific evidence, that “large swaths” of the American people have been impacted by COVID vaccines. In fact, a new study published in the journal Vaccine last month found that increases in neurological, blood and heart-related conditions are extremely rare. There was one case of acute inflammation of the brain and spine per one-point-75 million vaccinations. Authors wrote that the benefits of the COVID vaccine far outweigh these risks.

Q:
I see that you trimmed the plants in front of the Seguin Art League. Is it time to cut back our frozen plants? I know that you usually tell us to not cut them back because it provides cover for the birds and other wildlife as well as protects the plant from more freezes.
A:
Well, I guess I’m optimistic and really don’t think we’ll be getting any more hard freezes. Roses and other root hardy plants can be pruned now. My bluebonnets are blooming and the Mexican Plums at the library have blooms (as does mine). My neighbor’s Mountain Laurel has started to bloom and is covered in insects. Other early bloomers according to Doug Welsh, Extension Horticulturist, are pyracantha, spirea, calleryana pear, Eastern redbud, Texas redbud, and Mexican redbud, and Mexican buckeye. It must be Spring, although my redbuds and buckeye aren’t blooming yet.
Q: Do I prune my citrus now also? How do I know whether my citrus has been injured by our freezes?
A: Aggie-Horticulture, in a section on citrus freeze injury and care, suggests that you wait for spring growth before pruning, and the article also suggests waiting until the fruit has set in May. Then you can prune the dead limbs and twigs back to live tissue. The article mentions that your plant might still grow normally and flower for several weeks. Then, when the high summer temperatures hit, it could show stress or die.
Q:
When do I fertilize my lawn? My neighbor is out there today fertilizing.
A: As I mention every year, apply lawn fertilizer after you have mowed the lawn grass twice. (Lawn grass being defined as your St. Augustine, Bermuda, or Zoysia, not that winter grass.) Welsh says that waiting confirms that the lawn grass is actively growing and is ready to use the fertilizer applied. He also suggests applying one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn.
Q: I wish I had a garden but I live in an apartment (or have a tiny yard). What can I do?
A: You can garden in pots (or window boxes, or on the patio). One of my friends has an upstairs apartment. Her pots are on the landing, and when there is a freeze, she brings them inside. Another friend living in a garden home has several large pots on her patio. One pot has a lemon tree and another pot has a tomato plant. This winter my pots held kale plants, so I had fresh kale salad all winter. For the last two months, I have had fresh cherry tomatoes every day from a potted Siam tomato that I moved in and out of the house when we went below 40. The main thing you need when growing in pots is good well-drained soil, full sun at least 6 hours a day, and water. I check every day to make sure the soil is moist.
