Seguin embarks in largest capital project

(Seguin) – The city of Seguin has officially broken ground on the largest single capital project ever.

The city on Tuesday gave way to the start of construction and expansion of its Geronimo Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant located on Seitz Road just west of the Randolph Auxiliary Airport.

Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen says the project will finally decommission the sewer treatment

plant located on Walnut Creek near downtown. She says its waste stream will be transferred to the Geronimo Creek WWTP.

“That water treatment plant -- that a long time ago when it was initially there in Walnut Branch -- was outside of town and now, it’s at the edge of our downtown and it’s in town and so with that being gone, that area will flourish. It has dealt with that odor, with that eyesore for a long, long time and that doesn’t need to happen. Those folks don’t need to be doing that and our town doesn’t need to be doing that. So, when that is removed, there will be something incredible there. I’m not sure what it will be. It could be pie in the sky but there will be something incredible there and everything will be moved outside of town as we know it today and it will take us to 2070,” said Dodgen.

It was in 2020, when the council approved the decision to move forward with the project. She says the cost which includes Texas Water Development Board funding is projected at $183,769,179 – the largest capital project to date.

“It is the costliest project that we’ve ever done and the largest that we’ve ever undertaken but we need it as part of our growth and as Seguin changes and becomes better. That’s very large and so what happened was, we looked at if we expanded this one and expanded Walnut Creek where it was, we were like only $57 million different and I know millions sound like a lot but to get this and to be out here plus decommission that one, it was worth that amount of money so that was very important to us.

Growth in Seguin equals more job, retail opportunities

(Seguin) – New retailers and job creation are often the top stats used to analyze growth in a community.

Today, the Seguin Daily News wraps up its three-part series on the evidence of growth in Seguin by taking a closer look at retail prospects and the creation of more jobs in 2024.

Continuing to shed light on the behind-the-scenes work of retail recruitment is Josh Schneuker, the executive director of the Seguin Economic Development Director.

“You kind of look at the existing land space and I think the one thing that has worked in our favor is the fact that the existing retail spaces over by the HEB and Walmart, we’ve seen so much interest from the

retailers out there and those spaces being filled. What that does for us, it validates the market to the other retailers that we have been courting for several years now. They see big brand name retailers like Boot Barn and Ross and Marshals come into the Seguin market and that peaks other retailers’ interest and they say ‘hey, if they are going to come in and they are going to be successful here, we can do it too,” said Schneuker.

Although cities are often tight lipped when it comes to retail recruitment and negotiations, Schneuker believes 2024 will be a prosperous year for retail announcements.

“I can’t announce anything new, but I can tell you, we have

several retail projects that we are working in the background right now. That should add in some cases over 100,000 square feet of new retail to Seguin. We are working with retailers that we know our community has long wanted and these retailers are now wanting to be in Seguin. I think that as we continue to go through 2024, I am confident that we are going to have some very exciting announcements to make before the year is up and it’s going to be I think a great year for retail in Seguin and we are going to continue to diversify what we have and expand those retail and entertainment options for our residents,” said Schneuker. It’s going to be paid by impact fees and the wastewater rate is projected to be less than 5 percent over the next five years. That’s our goal is not having anymore than we’ve already been raising it and let developers and the rightof-way fees and some other fees pay for this expansion. Actually, what it is going to pay for is our debt service on this and eventually pay it off,” said Dodgen.

Initiating the project from the very beginning was Tim Howe, the director of wastewater utilities for the city of Seguin.

Dodgen says Howe and his whole team should be applauded for helping the city arrive to this point.

“I want to tell him and say to him, thank you for all that you do for us, for all that you do for our citizens – he makes things seem seamless and so does his staff and that is an incredible feat to be honest with you. What they do may not be sexy as we say but it is necessary and to take us to that next level is something that we needed. Can

you imagine that decommissioning and what is going to happen there along with some of the other things that we are doing downtown and are happening in town?” said Dodgen.

The construction contract for the expansion has been awarded to PLW Waterworks. Also helping to oversee the project is TRC Engineering. The project is expected to be completed in August 2027.

Schneuker says the remainder of this year will also welcome a handful of new manufacturing opportunities. He says the city’s skilled workforce and talent pool helps to keep Seguin competitive making it a destination for large companies.

The city’s population has experienced a significant increase over the last 10 years. The city’s population alone since 2020 has grown 13.5 percent. According to officials, the city of Seguin is one of the fastest growing communities in the state and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. City leaders say they will continue to roll out their plans – plans that they, again, say were started years ago to ensure smart and responsible growth.

Bulldogs Split Tuesday Doubleheader against Concordia

AUSTIN, Texas -- After nearly a month since their last games, the No. 15 Texas Lutheran softball team split their non-conference doubleheader against Concordia (TX) in Austin Tuesday evening.

The TLU offense had 12 hits, with five being extra base hits. The Bulldog pitching staff of Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) and Kourtney Bellinger (Houston/ Grand Oaks) limited CTX (9-6, 1-2 ASC) to just four hits. It was TLU’s second shutout of the season.

Tavery Ortiz (Texas City/Texas City) put TLU (7-1) on the board early with an RBI fielder’s choice in the first inning. Mia Landry (Cypress/Bridgeland) would score on a Concordia error in the second inning and Kylee Jack (Richwood/Brazoswood) would score on a Reagan Hillis (Cedar Park/Cedar Park) sacrifice fly to increase the TLU lead to 3-0 through three innings.

The fourth and sixth innings would be the only innings the Bulldogs would not score in game one.

In the fifth, senior Jayna Reid (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) blasted a twoRBI double before the Bulldogs would completely break the game open in the seventh inning.

Texas Lutheran would score five runs on five hits in the seventh. Riley Futrell (Florence/Florence) would score following a Reagan Hillis bunt before Annie Kay (Sinton/Sinton) would score Hillis on an RBI groundout. Caelee Clark (Montgomery/ Lake Creek) would hit a two-RBI triple before Kylee Jack would close the scoring with an RBI single.

Bellinger entered in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the Tornados, retiring

the Tornados in order including one strikeout. Strother collected her fifth win of the season in the circle, striking out four in six innings and allowing four hits and no runs or walks.

Nine Bulldogs registered a hit in the game with two registering multiple. Six Bulldogs brought in at least one run with Clark driving in three and Reid driving in two.

Jack paced TLU with a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI and two runs scored while Caelee Clark went 2-for-5 with a triple, three RBI, and a run scored.

Game two would be a pitcher’s duel that would be decided in the fourth inning following a TLU error. The Tornados would score two runs on two hits and the Bulldog error.

Sydney Ouellette would get the start and allowed two unearned runs on four hits and two walks. Katelyn Howard (Waller/Hempstead) entered in the bottom of the fourth and would finish the game for TLU. Howard would toss 2.1 scoreless innings and would allow two hits and a walk while striking out three.

TLU stranded six base runners and the Tornados stranded seven.

Hall

Norman Ricketts (Skip) Hall, Jr., was born on June 18, 1945, and passed on to Heaven on March 2, 2024, after a lengthy, difficult battle against cancer.

Skip leaves behind his wife Beth of fifty-seven years, his son Randy and fiancé Jennifer, and one granddaughter Remi of Portland, Oregon; his younger brother Charlie and wife Vicky, and their two sons: Caleb and wife Sara and Nathan and spouse Dre along with great nephews Rowe and Ripp; his remaining sister-inlaw Karen Hudson and Danny Glenn, her daughter Dawn Hooper and husband Mike and their children Tyler Hooper and wife Peyton and son Ryder and Maddie Hooper; numerous cousins, friends, and former students.

Skip was a dedicated history/government/economics teacher for a total of thirty-three years, He was department chairman at Seguin High and later at Kerrville Tivy High School and served as Student Council sponsor at Seguin. He also jokingly claimed to have taught “advanced

detention hall.” Skip was lucky enough to have enjoyed the fun of ranching at the Killeen family ranch that is now the development Skipcha Mountain—the name a combination of the two brothers’ names. He later ranched at Cleo, Texas, on the family ranch. He enjoyed every aspect of deer hunting, from feeding the deer, preparing for deer season, traveling to the lease— even if it just involved going out the back door— and hanging his trophy horns throughout the house. Following his father’s example, Skip became an educator. He grew up in Killeen and attended the public schools there. He graduated from Angelo State University in its first graduating class in 1967 and completed his Master’s at East Texas State University in Commerce in 1971. Skip was preceded in death by his parents Billye Barr Hall and Norman Ricketts Hall, Sr.

A memorial service will be held at the chapel at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin, Texas, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22 with Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Old Killeen City Cemetery.

Biden Contrasts Health Care Agenda Against GOP (Goffstown, NH) -- President Biden is calling on Congress to work with his administration to lower health care costs. While speaking in New Hampshire on Monday, the president outlined his health care agenda, which includes expanding the Affordable Care Act and capping outof-pocket drug costs for seniors on Medicare. He contrasted his plan with Republican lawmakers, who he says want to repeal Obamacare and put social security and Medicare on the chopping block. He called out Republican frontrunner former President Trump by name, who on Monday floated the idea of cutting spending on entitlement programs.

Doctors At UC Davis Health Trying To Contact People Who May Have Been Exposed To Measles (Sacramento, CA) -- Health officials in the U.S. are monitoring more cases of measles. Doctors at UC Davis Health in California are trying to contact around 300 people who may have been exposed to the virus. Officials say a child was treated at the facility on March 5th after traveling abroad. Chicago is now also reporting its first case of the virus since 2019. According to the CDC, as of March 7th, 45 measles cases were reported by 17 jurisdictions in the US. Measles spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes. It can cause severe disease, complications, and even death. Measles can affect anyone but is most common in children.

CO Bill Introduced To End Surprise Medical Bills For Riding In Ambulance

(Denver, CO) -- Efforts are underway to make sure Coloradans aren’t hit with a surprise bill if they ever ride in an ambulance. This is when providers charge more than health insurance coverage, leaving patients to pay the difference. A federal law passed two years ago to stop doctors and hospitals from doing this did not include ambulances. That’s why a new bill aims to close the loophole and cap costs at the insurance plan’s deductible or copayment. Lawmakers in the state House will review the bill one week from today.

Johnsonville Meat Recalls More Than 35 Thousand Pounds Of Turkey Sausage (Denmark, WI) -- Meat manufacturer Johnsonville is recalling more than 35-thousand pounds of meat after multiple reports of black rubber. The Wisconsin-based company recalled its ready-to-eat Polish kielbasa turkey sausage after at least two consumers reported the material. That’s according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. The product was produced from October 30th and 31st and was shipped to retail distribution centers in several states throughout the country.

Registration Open for City Summer Day Camp

Registration is now open for the City of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department’s Just for Kids Summer Day Camp program for those who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grade, not to exceed 11 years of age.
