Guadalupe County names winner of Distinguished Young Women contest

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County has named a new Distinguished Young Woman. Winning the 2024 title over the weekend was Reyna Gold, a junior at Canyon High School. The scholarship program was held Sunday at the Stephen and Mary Birch Texas Theatre. The program, better known in this area as Jr. Miss, is designed for well rounded high school juniors who compete for various scholarship opportunities.

Gold, the daughter of Chad and Amanda Henk and Dustin Gold and Aimee Silguero, also walked away with both the Fitness and Talent Awards. In addition, Gold claimed this year’s Spirit Award named in memory of Steve Tschoepe, one of the program’s longtime coordinators who died unexpectedly this past February. All together, Gold received an $8,000 scholarship to attend Texas Lutheran University as well as $1,250 in cash scholarships.

Gold says she has always admired the program and is grateful

to be a part of this ongoing tradition.

“Since winning, I have had many thoughts and emotions. First, I am incredibly thankful for this title and the honor to represent Guadalupe County. I have watched this program be a vital part for juniors in our community and have looked up to every single person that has been part of the Junior Miss (DYW) family. Now, being able to be a part of this program is such a blessing and I am so grateful to have won,” said Gold.

Gold, who competed alongside eight other area high school juniors, says the experience created memories for everyone.

“The best experience I gained from this program was the people that I got to work with. I had the privilege to meet and grow with amazing girls from around the community and will hold lifelong friendships and memories with them. Guadalupe County also has the best behind the scenes team!

Seguin Fire Dept. seeking applicants for CITIZENS FIRE ACADEMY

(Seguin) -- Have you ever wondered what being a firefighter is all about? Why is a fire engine sent with an ambulance on a medical call? How much does all that firefighter gear weigh?

Residents will have an opportunity to find out answers to these questions and many more during the Seguin Fire Department’s Citizens Fire Academy (CFA) this spring.

The CFA is a 10-week program designed to educate citizens of Seguin about their fire department.

The CFA gives Fire Department personnel the chance to welcome residents into the fire department family and introduce them to the various ways the department serves the community.

The Citizens Fire Academy is open to anyone 18 years of age or older who resides in Seguin. The program is held from 6 to 9 p.m. each Thursday from April 11, 2024 to June 13, 2024, plus one optional Saturday class that includes CPR training.

The Citizens Fire Academy is free of charge plus all equipment is provided for participants to use during the class. Classes are held at the city’s various fire stations and facilities.

Topics and activities featured during the Citizens Fire Academy include:

• History of the Seguin Fire Department

• Fire Investigations

• Engine Operations

• Fire Communications

• Fire Prevention

• Emergency Medical Services

• Hands-on experience using a fire extinguisher and a fire hose

• Using the Jaws of Life to free someone who is trapped in a vehicle

• Using a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus

• Putting on Fire Gear and HAZ-MAT Suits

Seguin Fire Chief Dale Skinner says the Citizens Fire Academy program is a great way to establish a link between the Seguin Fire Department and the community.

“Many of the classes are hands-on, allowing participants to apply what they’re learning,” he continued. “Academy participants will also be given the opportunity to participate in a ride out program to experience things first-hand,” said Skinner.

Applications can be submitted online at https:// www.seguintexas.gov/197/Citizens-Fire-Academy. They can also be picked up and dropped off at the Fire Administration Office, located inside the Municipal Court Building at 660 S. Hwy. 46 between 9 am and 4:30 pm. The deadline to apply is April 5, 2024.

All applicants will undergo a background check. Space is limited to the first 12 applicants. Once the course is filled, applicants will be placed on a waiting list for the next Citizens Fire Academy.

(Seguin) -- You have three more opportunities in which to help save a life. A series of Community Blood Drives that began over the weekend at HEB continue this week at other various partnering locations.

The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is encouraging individuals to become blood donors and heroes to patients in need by making an appointment.

The mobile unit will be in Seguin today and Wednesday at Texas Lutheran University. Today’s hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Donors will also have the chance to give on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fantastic Sam’s.

While blood is in demand year-round, donations are especially needed during these warmer months of the year. That’s according to Roger Ruiz, of the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.

“Patients in more than 100 hospitals, clinics in South Texas rely on the generosity of blood donors regularly. The need for blood is constant to meet the ongoing needs of patients scheduled for surgery, those who need blood as part of their regular cancer treatments, newborns and their mothers, and many other patients,” said Ruiz. “Many patients need blood transfusions regularly, like 9-year-old Lyric. She receives frequent blood transfusions to help ease pain caused by sickle cell disease.”

Ruiz says donating is made easy. He says folks start off by making an appointment by visiting SouthTexasBlood.org or by calling 210-731-5590.

Also walking away with scholarship prizes was First Runner-Up Danielle Nyame. Nyame, a Seguin High School junior, was the winner of both the Scholastic and Self-Expression awards. Nyame was sponsored by Dr. Bree Vickers and Dr. Laurie Minton.

She received a $6,000 scholarship to attend Texas Lutheran University and $1,000 in cash scholarships.

Prior to donating, donors will take part in a quick health screening which includes blood pressure, iron check and temperature.

Ruiz says the actual blood donation process, itself, only takes about 10 minutes.

Anyone over the age of 16 can donate, however, a parent must give consent for a 16-year-old to donate. Donor gifts will be provided at each site. Those who donate at Fantastic Sam’s on Sunday will receive a $10 voucher for a free haircut good for that day only. They will also be entered into a drawing for the chance to win six months of free haircuts.

I would say my biggest task is to be a positive influence to the upcoming generations that will go through this program and to be an exceptional role model. With the platform ‘Be Your Best Self,’ I want every little girl to know you’re beautiful and wonderful the way you are and as long as you are being your best self, they can accomplish anything,” said Gold.

This marked the 59th year for the Junior Miss/Distinguished Young Woman Program.

Gold now advances to the state competition to be held later in 2025.

Fleming, Rayos & Randle lead Marion BASKETBALL ALL-DISTRICT selections

(Marion) -- Braeden Fleming took the District 26-3A Defensive Player of the Year award while Richard Rayos and Travis Randle earned first team honors to lead Marion basketball all-district accolades for the 2023-24 season.

Fleming led the Bulldogs and the district in steals at 2.2 thefts per contest. On the offensive side, the junior was second on the Bulldogs in scoring at nearly 14 points per game.

Rayos topped the Bulldogs in scoring and assists at 15 points and 3.5 gives per contest. The senior was second on the team with 1.9 steals per game. Both Fleming and Rayos were named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region team.

Randle was third on the team

averaging 6.7 points per game. The sophomore tied for the team lead in blocks at 0.5 per contest.

Making the all-district second team for Marion were

sophomores Jackson Missildine and Jaiden Riley. Riley was fourth on the team in scoring at 6.2 points per game. He tied Randle for the team lead in blocks per

game and also led the Bulldogs in rebounding pulling down five boards per contest. Missildine averaged 5.3 points per game, good for fifth on the team.

Four Marion Bulldogs were recognized Academic AllState by the Texas High School Coaches Association. Rayos along with Michael Koehler, Aaron Arambula and Walker Lindeman were named Honorable Mention Academic All-State.

The Bulldogs finished third in District 26-3A. Marion was 23-10 overall and advanced three rounds deep in the UIL Class 3A playoffs before falling to Poth in the Region IV quarterfinals. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Jon Allen.

A loving daughter, friend, teacher, wife, Mama and Gigi

Susan Brown Glenewinkel of San Marcos Texas, aged 57, passed away unexpectedly on March 11, 2024, leaving a hole in the hearts of all who knew her and a sadness so profound there are no words for it. She was born on July 24, 1966, in Waukegan, Illinois, to Dorothy (Clausen) and Neil Brown. She grew up in a loving family with her parents, brother Kevin, and numerous wonderful dogs.

Susan graduated from Southwest Texas State, where she was very active as a Sigma Nu Little Sister. She met many lifelong friends in San Marcos, including her very best friend, her future husband, Reagan Glenewinkel. She and Reagan married in 1992 and moved to Round Rock, Texas, where Susan focused on her number one dream job of being a mother. They also spent time in El Paso, Seguin and San Marcos as they moved with Reagan’s job with UPS. No matter where they were, Susan always created a home filled with love and the many friends she met along the way. Reagan and Susan’s 32-year marriage exuded a special magic and devotion that has served as a model for their children and those that know them.

When all of her children were school-aged, Susan earned her teaching certificate and put it to use serving students in various districts across Texas. She was a dedicated and passionate teacher whose commitment and passion touched the lives of countless students. Most recently, Susan was the Response to Intervention (RTI) teacher at Bluebonnet Elementary in Lockhart. She taught in Lockhart ISD for 10 years, continually inspiring her students and spurring them on to a love for learning. She also dedicated time as a mentor and a friend to her colleagues, always at the ready to lend a hand or a listening ear. Susan’s fun-loving and caring spirit made her the perfect teacher.

Susan was a devoted and caring wife, Mama and Gigi who always put her family first. Nothing made Susan happier than spending time with those she called her own. Susan was the proud mother of six children –five by birth and one by choice. She was also an amazing Gigi to thirteen grandchildren who brought her much joy. Susan was the heart of the family, the one everyone counted on whether it be sage advice, warm hospitality, or a listening ear. She was always supportive and encouraging of her family’s

On Thursday, March 14, 2024, Nancy Ann Campbell Holmes of Nixon, Texas went to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 86. Nancy was born in Nixon on September 3, 1937, the daughter of Charles and Elois Campbell, who have preceded her in death along with her husband of 63 years, William A. “Bill” Holmes of 63 years.

Nancy was very active in the community. She was a founding member of Lifegate Church in Seguin, Texas and Methodist Church in Nixon, Texas and served the Lord fervently, The Nixon Bridge Club for over 50 years, Shakespeare Club, Garden Club (Geraniums and Begonias were her favorite) and the President of the Nixon Chamber of Commerce for 4 years. Nancy loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who affectionately

dreams and aspirations, championing them in all their life choices.

Susan was a kind and generous friend who made everyone feel welcomed and valued. She had a warm and genuine smile that lit up any room. She had a great sense of humor and a zest for life. She loved to read, sit by her pool, or wade in the river. Her greatest passion and accomplishment was by far building a life of adventure, love, and mutual support with Reagan.

Susan is already missed by her husband, Reagan; her children, Morgan Snody (wife Erin and children Blair and Reese); Trenton Snody (wife Sarah and children Charlotte, Sophia, and Nora); David Vidales (wife Kalie and children Eli, Flora, and Lyla); Cameron Glenewinkel (wife Amanda and children Lane August and Cameron); Jackson Glenewinkel (wife Bailey and children Margarat Jo and Beaux); Mary Carson Glenewinkel Mills (husband Alex and son Auggie); by her loving parents, Neil and Dottie Brown of San Antonio; her Uncle Walt; her brother Kevin Brown of Florida (wife Jennifer and children, Adam and Josh); by her brothersand sisters-in-law who counted her as a true sister; by many nieces and nephews; by a very large circle of friends from every stage of her life, and by her colleagues and students. Last but not least, even her beloved dogs, Gypsy and Huckleberry, feel her absence greatly. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her aunt, Betty Graham.

Susan created a beautiful life, full of joy, love, and kindness. Her enduring legacy will live on with her parents, brother, husband, children and grandchildren, family, and friends. Her circle was wide and her impact on this world and the hearts of others was great.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at St James Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Monsignor Dennis Darilek officiating. Interment will follow in the Kingsbury Cemetery. Reception information will be provided at the service.

Her sons and son-in-law will serve as pallbearers for their mother.

Ketchum

Frank Edward Ketchum was born on June 28, 1947 in Seguin, Texas to the parents of Frank and Maudester Ryan Ketchum. His early Christian life began at Refuge Church of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He attended Ball High and graduated from Seguin High School. Frank was an avid tennis player at Ball High and Seguin High Schools. Upon graduation from high school, he attended The Engineering Extension Service-Texas A & M University Highway Construction Equipment Technician and Operators School. Upon

completion he furthered his education by attending Durham College and St. Philip’s College. Frank was a faithful employee to Burke’s Forms. Frank’s favorite passions were fishing, gardening, reading and of course taking photos of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Danny and Bill Ketchum and sister Annet Ketchum Hall.

Frank leaves to cherish his memory his siblings, Janet Antwine (Kermit) and Dennis Day Ketchum (Monika) 1SG Retired; nephews Lester L. Cooks, Jr. (Liana), SMSGT Retired, Kory D. Antwine, Frederick Ketchum (Anna), M.D., and Wil Hall; nieces Krystal Winfield (Alistair), Isabel Lee (David) and Rebecca Ketchum, and a host of loving relatives and friends.

Leoma Rena Dreyer Steffen, 78, died peacefully on March 15, 2024, at her home in Marion surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 26, 1945, to Rena (Reimann) and Helmuth Dreyer. She grew up on a farm in Marion owned by her family for 144 years. A German heritage shared with her children and grandchildren for many years. She married the love of her life, Calvin Steffen, in 1963 and spent 60 years with him enjoying life in the country. In her closing chapter, Calvin dedicated all his time serving as a human walker and primary caregiver as her Parkinson’s disease progressed. He held her hand and heart throughout the life they built together, showing a magnitude of love and grace as her body declined.

She spent her life as a kingdom builder, serving her church for over 40 years working as a youth leader, Sunday school teacher, Bible study leader, and volunteering on many committees. Leoma took pride in growing things, her human legacy, plants, garden, and farm animals. She was especially proud of her children Melanie Krause (Pete), Carl Steffen (Yvette), Paula Moeller (William), and Judith Bek (Brennan). She and her husband Calvin enjoyed time outdoors watching their 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren play in the yard. She and Calvin

spent numerous hours outside holding hands and waving at their family, neighbors and friends as their cars passed by.

Leoma took delight spending time with her lifelong friends, spending many hours with them in the kitchen sharing stories, bread, cinnamon rolls, or cookies. She spent most of her life as a seamstress; some may even say she entered this world with a Singer in hand. God gave her a beautiful gift, lovingly shared with others for over 60 years. People from surrounding counties brought her wedding dresses to alter, pants to mend, and shirts to embroider. The family went to weddings and on vacation in matching outfits thanks to her tremendous talent in sewing.

A gathering of Leoma’s family and friends will be held from 5:00-8:00 PM on Monday, March 18, 2024, at Goetz Memorial Chapel, 713 N. Austin St, Seguin, TX. A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 10:00 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marion with interment to follow at St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to join us at the Gerth’s Party Barn following the burial. Memorial contributions in Leoma’s memory may be made to your local Hospice. En lieu of fresh flowers, please bring a flowering plant of your choice which the family will enjoy on the Steffen’s front porch in memory of our mama. Norman Ricketts (Skip) Hall, Jr., was born on June 18, 1945, and passed on to Heaven on March 2, 2024, after a lengthy, difficult battle against cancer.

Skip leaves behind his wife Beth of fifty-seven years, his son Randy and fiancé Jennifer, and one granddaughter Remi of Portland, Oregon; his younger brother Charlie and wife Vicky, and their two sons: Caleb and wife Sara and Nathan and spouse Dre along with great nephews Rowe and Ripp; his remaining sister-inlaw Karen Hudson and Danny Glenn, her daughter Dawn Hooper and husband Mike and their children Tyler Hooper and wife Peyton and son Ryder and Maddie Hooper; numerous cousins, friends, and former students.

Skip was a dedicated history/government/economics teacher for a total of thirty-three years, He was department chairman at Seguin High and later at Kerrville Tivy High School and served as Student Council sponsor at Seguin. He also jokingly claimed to have taught “advanced

detention hall.” Skip was lucky enough to have enjoyed the fun of ranching at the Killeen family ranch that is now the development Skipcha Mountain—the name a combination of the two brothers’ names. He later ranched at Cleo, Texas, on the family ranch. He enjoyed every aspect of deer hunting, from feeding the deer, preparing for deer season, traveling to the lease— even if it just involved going out the back door— and hanging his trophy horns throughout the house. Following his father’s example, Skip became an educator. He grew up in Killeen and attended the public schools there. He graduated from Angelo State University in its first graduating class in 1967 and completed his Master’s at East Texas State University in Commerce in 1971. Skip was preceded in death by his parents Billye Barr Hall and Norman Ricketts Hall, Sr.

A memorial service will be held at the chapel at Tres Hewell Mortuary in Seguin, Texas, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22 with Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Old Killeen City Cemetery.

HHS Investigating Cyberattack

(Washington, DC) -- The Department of Health and Human Services is investigating a recent cyberattack against UnitedHealth Group. Last month, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth fell victim to a ransomware attack that disrupted billing operations for patients across the country. A survey found more than 80-percent of hospitals say their cash flow was directly affected by the cyberattack. HHS announced it would launch an investigation “”Given the unprecedented magnitude” of the attack.

More Teens Using Delta-8

(Undated) -- More teens in the U.S. are experimenting with the psychoactive substance delta-8. A survey funded by the National Institute of Health found that at least one or two students in every average-sized high school class used the intoxicating substance last year. Delta-8 is a chemical compound found in cannabis and hemp plants. Delta-8 use was more common in the Midwest and South regions in states where it is banned, according to the survey. The director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse says it’s important to pay attention to what kind of cannabis products teens are using because “cannabis use in general has been associated with negative impacts on the adolescent brain.”

Marriages In US Back To Pre-Pandemic Levels

(Undated) -- Marriage rates in the U.S. are back to pre-pandemic levels. New government data shows there were just over two-millionmarriages in the U.S. in 2022, roughly six-point-two marriages per one-thousand people. That’s the highest level since 2018. Marriage rates dropped when COVID hit, and in 2020 there were only one-point-six-million marriages nationwide. While numbers seemed to have recovered from the pandemic, the last two decades have seen an overall downward trend in marriage rates.

NY New Abortion Policy

( New York, NY ) -- New York City health officials say they will no longer ask certain questions when patients come in for an abortion. Under new guidelines to start next month, the Health Department will no longer ask for the birthplace, date-of-birth or marital status of their patients, or for the names of primary health care providers. This information has been collected for over 70 years, but the Health Department says the new guidelines will protect the privacy of out-of-state patients who come to New York for reproductive healthcare.

Registration Open for City Summer Day Camp

Registration is now open for the City of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department’s Just for Kids Summer Day Camp program for those who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grade, not to exceed 11 years of age. The camp operates from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Monday, June 3 to Friday, Aug. 2. There is a $25 registration fee due at the time of registration and the weekly fee is $110. The City of Seguin is now accepting applications for the Business Improvement Grant (BIG) Program. Applicants may be eligible to receive up to a 75 percent matching grant, with a maximum grant awarded to an applicant not to exceed $10,000.
