South Texas Pregnancy Care Center starts new building project
(Seguin) -- The South Texas Pregnancy Care Center is expanding to further meet the needs of expecting parents in the Seguin area. The center, which is currently located on West Court Street, recently broke ground in its new building, to be built on East Kingsbury Street, just west of the Texas Department of Public Safety Office.
Executie Director Janice Weaver says a new pregnancy care center is needed in this community. The center says it works to support families by offering a number of services to parents. Weaver says they continue to see their numbers grow, and the new location will be welcome addition to their work.
“We have averaged around 20 to 21 pregnancy tests every month. We do free pregnancy tests (and) free ultrasounds. We (also) do parenting classes. In January 2023, we did 41 pregnancy tests, and we did 27 free ultrasounds. So, there is a huge need in our community,” said Weaver. Project, pg. 3

New report suggests Uvalde officers FEARED AR-15 used by gunman
(Uvalde) -- A new report says the first officers that arrived at the scene of the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting last year didn’t engage the gunman because of the weapon he was using.
According to the Texas Tribune, the officers told investigators they had “no choice” but to wait for backup after finding out the 18-year-old shooter was using an AR-15.
A Texas House committee report on the shooting
said more than 300 law enforcement officers were at the school while the gunman was in the classroom. However, nobody confronted him until a Border Patrol SWAT team arrived more than an hour after the first shots were fired. The wait reportedly delayed medical care for more than two dozen victims, including three that died after the shooting ended.
In all, 19 elementary school students were killed, along with two teachers at the campus.

The South Texas Pregnancy Care Center supports the right to life for all babies. Weaver says their mission is to help all of those prospective parents, especially young parents, love, care and support their babies. She says they offer resources that otherwise would not be available in this community.
“We take those young women and men -- I just left the center and we had a couple in the center getting ready to go through some classes -- and we take them and
we mentor them until their babies are two. We try to help them just be the best parents they can be. So, while they’re going through classes, they’re earning points and they can go to our Baby Boutique and buy all the diapers and wipes and clothes and cribs and strollers and all the things that they need,” said Weaver.
Weaver says the numbers clearly show that the need exists in Seguin. She says that’s why they are moving forward with their plans for the new building.
“There is a big need in Seguin and we are so excited about the
possibility of a new building. The Koehler Company is going to build it for us, and First United Bank is (financing) us,” said Weaver. The ground breaking was held earlier this month at its proposed new location, at 1348 E. Kingsbury St. Donations to the South Texas Pregnancy Care Center can be made online at southtexaspregnancycarecenter. com. Those currently in need of services can stop by the center’s current location, at 975 W. Court St. Weaver made her comments during a recent meeting of the Seguin City Council.

TLU Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader, Avoids Sweep by Centenary
SHREVEPORT, LA -- Texas Lutheran Baseball salvaged the series against Centenary College - splitting a Saturday doubleheader at Shehee Stadium, with the Bulldogs dropping game one, 5-4, before taking game two, 6-3, in 10 innings to avoid the sweep in their conference opening series.
The Bulldogs (8-11, 1-2 SCAC) and Gents (9-5, 2-1 SCAC) were tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the eighth inning before the game winning run scored on a one out Gents RBI single.
Freshman Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) started in left field and went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Blade Strzelczyk (San Antonio/East Central) started and pitched 7.1 innings, with five runs (two earned) allowed on 10 hits and would earn the losing decision.
Centenary opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth inning.
Texas Lutheran grabbed a 4-2 lead with four runs in the top of the eighth inning, using an RBI single from Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) and a bases clearing, three RBI double from Mason Goudeau.
The Gents came back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own to retake the lead for good.
In game two, sophomore third baseman Niko Garcia (Houston/Langham Creek) was the hero with his two RBI single through the left side scoring the winning runs Saturday evening as the Bulldogs defeated the Gents 6-3 in 10 innings.
Zach Longshore (Richmond/Fort Bend Travis) earned the win in relief, tossing 1.1 innings, to improve to 2-2 on the year.
Texas Lutheran was held scoreless with just three hits entering the eighth inning before cracking out two runs on two hits to tie the game at two. Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson), who leads the SCAC with 23 RBIs so far this season, got the scoring started for TLU with a sacrifice fly to cut the Gents lead in half before a Mason Goudeau RBI single knotted the game at two.
Texas Lutheran rolled the momentum into the ninth as Blake Cappadona (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) drove in Payton Dahl (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge) on an RBI double to take a 3-2 lead. Centenary tied the game at three in the bottom of the ninth and threatened to walk it off before Zach Longshore entered from the Bulldogs bullpen to end the Gents rally - ending the inning with runners at second and third.
In the 10th, Mason Goudeau singled with two outs to get the Bulldogs started before TLU eventually loaded the bases for Niko Garcia - who would single through the left side scoring Goudeau and Alec Sanchez (Waxahachie/ Waxahachie). Randy Huerta (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) would add an insurance run for TLU scoring on a Centenary balk to extend the TLU lead to 6-3 before Longshore would shut the door in the bottom of the inning.
The Bulldogs return home for a five-game homestand starting with a midweek contest against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, March 21 at 6 PM. All streaming and live stats links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.

Awaiting Federal Judge’s Ruling On Abortion Pills
(Amarillo, TX) -- Millions are anxiously awaiting a Texas judge’s forthcoming decision in a case regarding abortion pills. A U.S. District judge heard arguments last week in an anti-abortion group’s lawsuit to overturn the FDA’s approval of abortion pills. The Alliance Defending Freedom sued in November on behalf of four pro-life medical organizations and four doctors who say they treated patients with mifepristone [[ miff-uh Pris-tone ]]. The drug was approved in 2000, but the lawsuit claims the government deliberately ignored what the plaintiffs describe as harmful side effects. A senior adviser at Planned Parenthood Texas points to the Trump-appointed judge’s background as a reason pro-choice advocates “can expect the worse.”
Report: U.S. Has Lowest Life Expectancy Of All G7 Nations
(England) -- The U.S. has the lowest life expectancy of any G7 nation. That’s according to data from the University of Oxford and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The G7 is an informal grouping of the world’s advanced economies including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, U.K. and the U.S. The U.S. has also dropped out of the world’s top 50 rankings with an average life expectancy of 77-point-41 years. For comparison, Japan and Australia both have average life expectancies of over 84 years.
IKEA Recalling Mirrors Over Risk Of Injury
(Undated) -- IKEA is recalling thousands of wall mirrors due to a risk of injury. The company says the plastic fittings on all sizes of their LETTAN model mirrors can break, causing them to fall off of walls, posing a risk of cuts and lacerations. Around 22-thousand units were sold in U.S. stores and online from December of 2019 to this past October. Owners are urged to stop using the mirrors immediately, contact the company’s customer service department for replacement fittings, or return them to an IKEA store for a full refund.
CA Bill Would Prohibit The Manufacture, Sale, Distribution Of Food Products Containing Chemicals
(Sacramento, CA) -- New legislation would ban the use of toxic chemicals in processed foods in California. AB 418, a first-in-the-nation measure, will prohibit the manufacture, sale, or distribution of food products in the state that contain Red Dye No. 3 and four other harmful chemicals. The chemicals have proven to cause significant public health harm, including cancer and behavioral health issues in children. Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel says the five chemicals currently banned in the European Union (EU) and in many other jurisdictions are still included in food and candy in the US and especially marketed to kids.
