Out with the old, in with the new

Seguin Coliseum to welcome new chairs

(Seguin) -- It may soon be easier to find the best seat in the house in the Seguin Coliseum. All of the chairs, in the city’s largest indoor event space, will soon be replaced with new and more comfy seating.

Seguin Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones says the hard plastic chairs will soon be replaced with a more comfortable option.

“The Seguin Coliseum has been in existence since 1977 so it’s 47 years old and in that time, you remember the original orange chairs that were there? Those were replaced with the gray chair about 25 years ago. So, in the 47 year history, we’ve had two chairs and we are proposing that this be our third chair. To go from plastic to fabric is a great deal,” said Jones.

Jones says updating the chairs is just about maximizing the comfort level for people who visit the Coliseum, but he says it will also help to attract new events to that space.

“We know that people choose facilities on chairs. It gets to that level especially when you are talking about weddings and receptions and things like that,” said Jones.

Facilities Director Randy Kell says the new chairs will replace some worn and outdated chairs. He says people will notice the difference in the seating.

“These are 25 year old chairs. They are stained as you can see, faded, discolored -- they have a foul odor. They’ve got broken feet, broken gang clips which are a safety hazard so it’s time. We’ve discussed different chair options, different styles, material, stackability, mobility and storage were all things considered when we were looking through these. We’ve met with different facilities. We had three or four different facilities that we visited and we talked to them about pros and cons of each of the chairs considered.

More than just baseball

River Monsters seek year-round investment in Seguin

(Seguin) -- Seguin’s championship summer-league baseball team is gearing up for another big year.

The Seguin River Monsters are the current champions of the Texas Collegiate League.

Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones says the city of Seguin is again offering a deal that will allow the city’s Smokey Joe Williams Field at Fairgrounds Park to serve as the home of the River Monsters.

“The past two seasons, we’ve entered three month agreements with the previous owner of the River Monsters Mike Gigliotti and for the past two seasons’ three month agreements, the team was sold this fall to Tommy and Kristin

Stephens and as you know, the new owners have requested a longtime deal with the city and we need more time to work through those things that we talked about and maybe a work session in April to discuss it with them in a public meeting but the agreement is similar to what

you saw the past two seasons,” said Jones.

As mentioned, the team’s new owners are Tommy and Kristin Stephens. The pair told members of the Seguin City Council that they are excited about the upcoming season, which will give the River Monsters a chance to defend their title.

“We are looking forward to this season. We have several new players from out of the state of Texas that will be coming in and spending some time in Seguin also local ball players as well. All the staff is the same. We are adding some new interns so a lot of exciting things going on,” said Tommy. Monsters, pg. 3

Schertz Elementary School teacher charged with indecency with a child

(Schertz) -- A fourth-grade teacher at Schertz Elementary School has been arrested on charges with indecency with a child.

Schertz Police Department detectives say Gabriel Cantu, 42, was arrested after a student made an outcry about the sex offense incident. Officials with the SchertzCibolo-Universal-City ISD released a statement which reported that the alleged incident happened last school year. School officials say they “first learned of the allegations”

over Spring Break when the child reported the incident to her mother.

According to the district, Cantu

We consulted with party planners as well as potential clients on style, color and material just to see what it is wanted, what is needed and what was going to work with the use. So we’ve done our due diligence. We were able to negotiate price. Discounts have been applied and we were also able to negotiate warranty from two to 10 years on the structure of the chair. They’ve got a 500 pound capacity so they are very sturdy and a very good quality chair,” said Kell.

Mayor Donna Dodgen says she’s looking forward to the new chairs. She says the old chairs are not easy to get out of, and this will add more comfort and accessibility for people who visit the Coliseum.

“So has anybody recently been able to get out of those chairs? asked Dodgen. “No seriously, it’s hard. I had the privilege of looking at these chairs. I was there for something else and got a preview of how they went in depth looking at these chairs. It was quite a process,” said Dodgen.

The replacement costs for the chairs will be a little over $76,000. That will provide the city with 1,050 new chairs, plus the chair dollies that will allow the chairs to be easily moved around the facility.

was “promptly placed on leave.” They state, “Mr. Cantu will not be returning to SCUC ISD in any capacity.”

Cantu turned himself into authorities Thursday morningand was transported to the Guadalupe County Jail. Meanwhile, the SCUC ISD says it will be conducting its own investigation. It also stated that all parents of current and former students who were directly “taught by this teacher” will be contacted as part of that investigation.

Spring recently arrived on the calendar, but Stephens says they are just weeks away from the start of TCL’s summer schedule.

“The media night is May 28 that we have a mixer with the chamber of commerce and then opening day is May 30,” said Tommy.

Kristin Stephens says they are not only excited about the River Monsters’ schedule this year, but they are also looking forward to more partnerships and events here in Seguin. She says they want to see the ballpark used year-round.

“Our vision for this team is -- I mean Mike has done a fabulous job so far. We want to grow on that. We want to expand. We want to be a part of this community. So, we’ve bought the bus. We bought the team a bus this year so they will be traveling in style this year. We’ve talked to Jack and there are a lot of things we want to add to the field and make this not just a baseball team for two and a half months out of the year, but we want to do things at least once every month through the year. So, we are not just the baseball in the summer time. We want to have movies. We want to have Boo Fest. We want to do Christmas activities so we want to do things for the community not just baseball,” said Stephens.

The city council recently approved the new agreement with the team. The city also wants to look at making some additional improvements to the ballpark, which has a rich history in Seguin. Jones says the club would like to have a longer term agreement for use of the facility. The city is expected to schedule a workshop meeting that will allow the council to get an update on plans for the facility and what’s needed to make it viable for a more long term commitment from the ball club.

Strother Perfect as No. 15

TLU Run-Rules Dallas, 15-0

IRVING, Texas -- Senior Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) opened this weekend’s series against University of Dallas with the second perfect game of her career as No. 15 Texas Lutheran run-ruled the Crusaders 15-0 in five innings.

After being held scoreless in the first, TLU would combine for 15 runs over the course of the next three innings. The Bulldogs would jump out to a 4-0 lead in the second and put up six runs in the third before a five spot in the fourth. Behind Strother’s stellar performance, the offense gave her plenty of help, racking up 16 hits in the contest.

In the second, an RBI single from Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) opened the scoring before Annie Kay (Sinton/Sinton) would follow with an RBI single of her own. A double steal from the Bulldogs lead to a steal of home from Leal extended the lead to 3-0 before Kylee Jack (Richwood/Brazoswood) would put TLU up four after two with an RBI single.

In the third, a Dallas error allowed Tavery Ortiz (Texas City/Texas City) to score before an RBI single from Annie Kay and a two-RBI single from Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek)

would stretch the lead to 8-0 to put the game in run-rule territory. Kylee Jack would pick up her second RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly and Clark would close the third inning scoring by scoring on a Dallas error.

The fourth saw TLU put up five runs on four hits, including three pinch hits. Following a leadoff walk to Reagan Hillis (Cedar Park/Cedar Park) and a Leal single, UTSA transfer Tatum Seith (Hewitt/Midway) picked up her first hit as a Bulldog, a two-RBI triple to left center. Caelee Clark would ground out to score Annie Kay, who re-entered for Seith following her triple. Freshman Kourtney Bellinger (Houston/ Grand Oaks) concluded the game’s scoring with a two-RBI single, scoring Mia Landry (Cypress/ Bridgeland) and Harleigh Russell (Fort Worth/ Boswell) to make it 15-0 TLU after four. The hit was the first of her collegiate career.

Strother (8-0) retired all 15 batters she faced on just 73 pitches, striking out 13 of the 15 batters she faced. It was the senior’s second perfect game, the most by an individual pitcher in program history, and second against University of Dallas following her perfect game against the Crusaders in 2023. It marked the

eighth perfect game and the 34th no-hitter in program history. The no-hitter was the first of the season for Strother, third individual of her career, and fifth overall, with the last coming against SUNY-Geneseo in a combined nohitter in the 2023 NCAA Marshall Regional. The shutout is her fourth of the season and her third straight.

Versus the Crusaders, 11 Bulldogs registered a hit with seven bringing in at least one run. Kay paced TLU with a 3-for-3, two RBI performance. Caelee Clark was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two stolen bases.

TLU continues SCAC play on Saturday, wrapping the series with the Crusaders with a doubleheader. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 12 and 2 PM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs. com.

Man Recovering After Pig Kidney Transplant

(Boston, MA) -- A man is recovering well after receiving a kidney transplant from a pig. Massachusetts surgeons are calling Rick Slayman a hero for agreeing to try the groundbreaking operation this week. Slayman had a previously failed human kidney transplant. There’s currently a massive shortage of human donor organs, and researchers hope animal donors may help. The pig kidney doctors used was genetically modified to reduce the risk of rejection.

Study Predicts Drop In Global Fertility Rates

(Seattle, WA) -- A new study predicts global fertility rates will decline in the decades ahead. Researchers at the University of Washington say the average number of children a woman gives birth to in her lifetime has dropped from about five in 1950 to about two in 2021. The new analysis predicts that rate will fall below two children per woman by the end of the century. The senior author of the study said there are many reasons for the decline, including better access to contraception and reproductive healthcare, and more opportunities for employment and education for women.

Neuralink Patient Can Play Online Chess

(Undated) -- The first human to receive a brain implant from Elon Musk’s Neuralink is a 29-year-old quadriplegic. Musk recently announced the man was recovering and now he’s speaking for himself. Death With Dignity Deaths Increase 20%

(Portland, OR) -- The number of people using Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act increased 20-percent last year. The Oregon Health Authority says the number of prescriptions increased 29-percent to 560 and 367 people used the medications to die. Oregon’s law changed in 2023 removing the state residency requirement. At least 23 non-resident deaths were reported, but the number could be higher, because the state can’t track out of state residents who get the medications and then leave the state to use it. Eighty-two-percent of people using the medications were older than 65 and more than half had cancer. The youngest patient was 29-years-old and the oldest was 102.
