Local business looks to make a comeback to Seguin

(Seguin) -- Seguin is not only on the verge of welcoming brand-new store names to Seguin like Marshals and Ross. Former franchise businesses also seem to want back into the action. No matter big or small, businesses are reportedly seeing the potential of opening their doors again thanks to the growing community. That is at least the case for Jaine Cantu, the owner of the new Fantastic Sams Cut & Color now open at 1507 E. Court St. near Marco’s Pizza.

It’s been at least six or seven years since a Fantastic Sams has operated in Seguin. Cantu says the rapid growth of the city made her decision to start up the business that much easier.

“I actually know the general manager of the Boot Barn and we were driving by Seguin, and he was just kind of mentioning how much

Seguin has grown and expanded and so we started looking at the area. We drove around and got to know Robert, our landlord, and he was amazing. So, it just felt like the right place to be,” said Cantu. Although she was not the former owner several years back, Cantu, who lives in La Vernia, knows the benefits of returning the franchise to Seguin.

Seguin community joins local CHURCH congregation in celebrating former pastor

(Seguin) -- Fifty years for some can mean a lifetime. But if you are Monsignor Dennis Darilek, that lifetime as an ordained minister was nothing but love and bringing “God to people and people to each other in Christ.”

Despite having retired from St. James Catholic Church in Seguin for over two years, Father Darilek better known in the community as simply Father Dennis returned home to Seguin this past weekend for the 50th anniversary of his ordination.

The date for the ordination of Father Dennis was April 27, 1973, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Moulton. Despite leading his congregation, Father Dennis was a fixture in the Seguin community out helping and supporting a number of efforts and organizations.

Father Dennis says he is grateful to have been remembered and celebrated this past Saturday with his Seguin family.

“It was just great coming back to see the people who you had been a part of. You laughed with them, cried with them, walked with them, loved them and did a lot of things together. It was just like a real homecoming. It was just wonderful. I could not have planned it any better,” said Father Dennis.

He says while some things have remained the same in the church, other things have really changed over the course of those 50 years. He says much of the list of demands is due to the growth of the Catholic population and the lack of priests.

Man bites family members during domestic violence

(Selma) -- A area man was transported to the Guadalupe County Jail after biting his wife and child. Selma Police officials say just before 4:30 a.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to the 160 00 block of Chelsea Place for a disturbance.

The dispatcher was advised that the complainant was attempting to leave the residence, but was being prevented from doing so. Upon arrival, the investigation determined a male subject had been in a physical altercation with his spouse and kids. The evidence showed the male subject physically assaulted his spouse by slapping and biting her. The evidence further showed the male subject bit his child on the right forearm when he attempted to stop the assault on his mother.

The male subject was placed under arrest and charged with “Assault Bodily Injury – Family Member” and “Injury to a Child.” He remains in the Guadalupe County Jail.

“I think today, there’s much more demands of a priest in accessibility because of your iPhones and emails compared to when we were ordained. We weren’t so busy with various electronic stuff. We also had a chance to be in a parish in a two, three-year term. Now guys today in a year or two can become pastors and it’s pretty tough and I work with those who are ordained and help them along in their ministry,” said Father Dennis. “One other thing that is different is when we got ordained, we were mostly native born, a few Hispanics, a lot of Irish. Today, we have 27 different nationalities of priests serving the San Antonio area. Only 10 percent are basically native.”

“We are locally owned, and we like being locally owned, so we like to find and provide jobs for the local community. So, for us, we had two stylists that were commuting from Seguin to La Vernia and so that was another kind of pointer towards us (opening in Seguin). There’s so many people in Seguin and we already had the stylists so it kind of took us down that road,” said Cantu.

The journey no doubt has been a good one. He says it’s also been one filled with love.

“The main thing is you’ve got to love the people. Love your people. My motto was bring God to people and people to each other in Christ and I just love doing that and we are here to serve and to love and to be a part of their lives,” said Father Dennis.

Prior to retiring on July 1, 2020, from St. James Catholic Church, Father Dennis had served the Seguin congregation for just over 16 years. His celebration continues on Sunday, April 30 at St. Joseph’s in Moulton followed by a pair of masses on his exact anniversary date at St. Matthews Catholic Church in San Antonio. Both a noon and 6 p.m. mass is being scheduled for that Thursday, April 27.

The store located at 1507 E. Court St is set to host its grand opening with $10 haircuts and 50 percent off all color this Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Seguin Radio KWED will help launch the new business venture with a live remote from 3 to 5 p.m. Fantastic Sams is only the latest in a list of franchise stores opening in Seguin. Marshalls is set to open in early April at 1386 E. Court St. Ross Dress For Less is also on schedule to open next door to Marshalls later on this year.

Walls are up for the new Discount Tire at the corner of North Austin and IH-10 and renovations are also in the works for the new Boot Barn set to open up soon at Crossroads Mall.

Baseball Drops Series Finale to No. 19 Trinity, 14-5

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball dropped the series finale to No. 19 Trinity, 14-5, at Katt-Isbel Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (10-12, 3-3 SCAC) will return home to Katt-Isbel Field for a mid-week doubleheader against DePauw with games starting at 3 PM. The first game will be a full nine inning game with the second game being a seven-inning contest. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) was a force at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI on the day. With the two home runs, Post raised his SCAC leading total to five on the season and surpassed former high school and college teammate Joe Jimenez as well as Johnny Briseno (1996-99) on the all-time home run list to now sit at fifth all-time with 27 thus far in his TLU career. Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) also finished 3-for-5 with a run scored.

Diego Vinton (Richmond/George Ranch) started and pitched 2.2 innings before Blake Cappadona (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) and Riley Backs (Cypress/ Cypress Falls) came out of the bullpen to toss 1.2 and 2.2 innings respectively.

After the Tigers scored one in the top of the first, Texas Lutheran started strong, scoring three runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning. After getting

two early runners on, Tyler Post would leave the yard for the first of his two home runs on the afternoon to make the score 3-1.

Trinity got the runs back and more in the second inning - scoring five runs on five hits to take a 6-3 lead. The Tigers would tack on another run in the third.

Tyler Post would hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to bring the score to 7-4.

The Tigers would score for the fourth consecutive inning - crossing another run in the fourth to double up the Bulldogs, 8-4.

A two-out RBI single from Post in the bottom of the fifth scored Blake Cappadona to make the score 8-5.

After two dormant innings, Trinity would score two in the seventh and four in the eighth to go up 14-5.

Keene Kreusler (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) would pitch a scoreless final 1.1 innings with a strikeout.

Colonel George Robert (Bob) Hyatt III (Ret), age 83, of Seguin, Texas passed away on March 21, 2023, at his home.

Bob was born June 28, 1939, in Pearsall, Texas to Bob and Grace (Howard) Hyatt. He lived in South Texas as a young man, lived and worked on a ranch for a time and developed a love of horses. He graduated High school in San Marcos Texas in 1957. Bob earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1961. Later in life he earned two master’s degrees; one from Auburn and one from New Mexico State University. While still at Southwest Texas State University, he made his first great decision and married Aubrey Carolyn Allison.

Bob was a career air force pilot. In training, flew the T-37 Tweet and T38 Talon. His flying skills were recognized, and he became an instructor pilot immediately after his flight training. He also flew the F-100 Super Sabre for a time. All his initial flying was in jets. The US Air Force sent Bob to Vietnam to fly the smallest slowest single engine propeller plane you can find, the O-1 Bird Dog. During this first tour in Vietnam, he was a Forward Air Controller for the famed

11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, “The Black Horse”. In that first year, he saved countless lives flying over 400 missions at low altitude, often under fire, calling in supporting air strikes. It was during this tour that Bob was awarded the Silver Star by the US Army. For the rest of his life, he was particularly proud of his membership in 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. After his first tour in Vietnam, he moved over to the Strategic Air Command and began flying the B-52 Stratofortress, one of the largest combat aircraft in the world with eight jet engines. He made a second trip to southeast Asia in the B-52 flying combat missions out of U-Tapao Thailand. We can say he was a great pilot!

After retiring from the Air Force in Albuquerque, NM, he became a Special Ed teacher and taught at Los Lunas High School, as well as Briesmeister Middle School in Seguin. He was quite involved with his horses and team penning. In 2000, he and Carolyn moved to Seguin Texas where he continued teaching for a few years and continued to enjoy his horses. One of his horses was a Palomino and for a time, he rode with the Palomino Patrol. He also volunteered at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and was a member Kiwanis and was president of Kiwanis for a year. In June of 2021 he made his second great decision and married Judy Johnson.

Bob is preceded in death by his first wife Carolyn Allison Hyatt, the mother of his four children and his brother William (Bill) Hyatt.

Survivors include his loving wife, Judy MyCue Hyatt; children, Robert Lee Hyatt II and wife Cindy,

Bonnie Allison Wright and husband, Mark, John Alan Hyatt and wife, Dana, David Howard Hyatt, Jeffrey Johnson and Jennifer Johnson; grandchildren, Katherine E. Steichen, Benjamin J. Hyatt; great-grandchildren, Adrin, Riley, Hayden, Henry, Bruce, Gavin and Ryleigh; his devoted sisters, Grace E. “Kita” Rutherford, Mary Ann Hyatt and Leslie K. Zelda “Zee” Kindred Pape, age 87 of McQueeney, passed away on March 27, 2023.

Zee was born on July 7, 1935, in Marlin, Texas to Clarice Belle (King) and Alton Finnis Kindred. Zee and her husband Kenneth were the owners and operators of Pape Pecan House and Nutcracker Museum. Zee met Kenneth when he attended a Ballroom Dance Class at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Austin where Zee was a dance instructor. Zee and Kenneth were members of First Methodist Church in Seguin.

Zee is preceded in death by her loving husband Kenneth Hugo Pape, her son, John Kerwin Pape and his wife Lori, and

siblings, Mary Helen Meyer, Dorothy Harrington, and Doris Jean Chambers.

Survivors include her step-daughter, Dana D. Pape O’Hara; sister, Lynel Kindred Wershan; brother, James “Jim” Kindred and wife Lin; sister-in-law, Beatrice Pape; nephew and caregiver, James Dresner; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Floyd ‘Sergeant Easy’ Banta, of Seguin Texas, took his final breath with his loving children by his side, on March 17, 2023, and took his first steps in Heaven a moment later. He passed at the age of 74 years and is survived by his daughters Dollene Banta and Sara [Kevin] Banta, Sons Stephen [Monica] Banta and Bill [Rehn] Bohnas; Grandchildren Jaclyn, Ryan, Autumn, Macey, Jadelynn, Damian, Kambrie, Hailey, Paisley, Katy & 5 Great-grandchildren; His loving friends; Ronnie, Ruth, Linda, Jay & Bonnie, Kevin & Elisabeth, Butch, and lastly, his faithful dog Pax.

Floyd is preceded in death by his mother Brownie Banta, father Jack Banta, brother Stan Banta, and stepdaughter Malissa West.

Floyd will always be remembered by his family and friends as a jovial storyteller of an eventful life; from his time as a young man hunting and fishing his family’s ranch, to rough work in the oil field, being a trucker on the road and tales of his time serving the Army in Vietnam and Germany. His later years in life he was dedicated to his bible studies and spreading the word of Christ.

While Floyd will be greatly missed by his friends and family, they all know that he is in Heaven “catching more fish than you can shake a stick at.” A memorial service will be set for a later date. WestMalissa Lynn West of Seguin Texas passed away March 10, 2023 at the age of 52 years young. She leaves behind her life partner & best friend Jason, daughter Macey Berryhill, son Nolan Berryhill, mother and stepfather Bonnie and Jay Forshage, father Tommy West, sister Sara Banta, brothers Stephen Banta and Bill Bohnas, grand mother Patsy Forshage, nieces; Autumn, Jadelynn, Kambrie, Hailey, Paisley, Katy, nephew Damian. Malissa joins in heaven, her son, Noble Berryhill.

Malissa had been battling breast cancer for many, many years, yet she never let trials and tribulations break her spirit. She loved Minnie Mouse, crocheting, & spending time with her dogs Tootie & Dozey. She was quick witted to crack a joke with her family and friends to try and put a smile on their face, even in times of her own suffering. She was passionate about spending time with her family, especially her daughter Macey, her love Jason, nieces, friends and loved ones.

Ethel Marie Hassell Dammann, age 83 of New Braunfels, passed away on March 18, 2023. Ethel was born on December 19, 1939 in Sweetwater, Texas to Frieda Emily (Schwarz) and E. C. Hassell. Ethel taught for over 37 years in the Schertz Cibolo Universal Independent School District. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #555 Seguin where she served in many leadership roles including Worthy Matron. Ethel was an active member of First Methodist Church Seguin and Mary and Martha Sunday School Class where she enjoyed many activities including working the Annual Pumpkin Patch.

Ethel is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd James Dammann, her daughter, Ione Dennise Dammann, and her parents.

Survivors include her son, Aaron Dammann and wife Kaylee; siblings, Chris Hassell and wife Bobbie, Joan Threet, and Earline Lively; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

Swope, age 78 of New Braunfels, passed away on March 25, 2023. Sally was born on April 7, 1944 in Los Angeles, California to Thelma Ann (Rasey) and Carl V. Call.

Sally was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Seguin. She will be remembered as the owner of Sally’s Hallmark Shop in Seguin. She was a long-time member of the Sunrise Rotary Club. Sally and Jim enjoyed weekly dancing for many years at Martinez Dance Hall and the Silver Center. Sally’s most treasured time was spent among family and friends whether it be dancing, attending church, eating out or shopping!

Sally is preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Helams and her parents.

Survivors include her loving husband, James L. Biden Marks 13th Anniversary Of ACA

(Washington, DC) -- President Biden is marking the 13th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act. He called the bill signed by former President Obama the most consequential healthcare legislation since the creation of Medicare and Medicaid. Biden said he’s now focused on expanding the law known as Obamacare to offer Americans more affordable insurance and lower drug prices. The President called out so-called “MAGA Republicans” who he said want to dismantle the law that “saves lives.”

CDC: White Child Autism Rates Now Lower Than Black Kids

(Atlanta, GA) -- Fewer white eight-year-olds are being diagnosed with autism than their Black counterparts. That’s according to new data from the CDC. About two-and-a-half percent of white kids that age were diagnosed with autism compared to just below threepercent of Black eight-year-olds. Overall, one in 36 children who were eight-years-old had autism spectrum disorder. That’s a more than 20-percent jump from 2018.

Norovirus Sickens Hundreds Of Students At Long Island High School

(Babylon, NY) -- Norovirus is blamed for a stomach bug outbreak that’s ripped through at a Long Island high school. Parents say it began with 80 kids getting sick after an assembly and dance on March 17th at Babylon Junior Senior High School. By Monday, more than 250 students out of seven-hundred at the school were out sick with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott [[ puh-GO ]] says norovirus can spread like wildfire but usually goes away after a day or two. He says the key to avoiding it is to wash your hands a lot since norovirus spreads on the skin and you can pick it up from doorknobs and staircase railings.

Georgia Gov Signs Ban On Most Trans Care For Minors

(Atlanta, GA) -- A bill that limits gender-affirming treatment care for minors is set to become law in Georgia. Republican Governor Brian Kemp signed the bill Thursday, saying it would “ensure we protect the health and wellbeing of Georgia’s children.” S-B 140 outlaws licensed medical professionals from providing patients under the age of 18 with hormone therapy or surgery related to gender transition. Violations could result in a revoked license. The measure takes effect July 1st.
