Vietnam Veterans to be recognized today
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera(Seguin) -- Seguin and Guadalupe County are on a mission to recognize all of its Vietnam Veterans. Vietnam veterans are invited to a special ceremony today in observance of all those who sacrificed their lives from Nov.1 1955 to April 30, 1975.
Dina Dillon, of the Guadalupe Valley Young Marines says the group will continue to recognize these vets by helping to pin those Vietnam Veterans who have not yet received their commemorative 50 year lapel pin. The ceremony is set for this afternoon at the Guadalupe County Veterans Outreach Center.
“The Young Marines are part of the Vietnam Veteran 50th Anniversary Commemorative Program. We are authorized to have ceremonies and give pins or a pin to a Vietnam Veteran and honor and thank them. It has an eagle on it and it says ‘A Grateful Nation is
Thankful for You.’ It’s something that we can offer the Vietnam Veterans who have not received a pin yet and that’s what we are going to do. We’ve got currently 25 people signed up. I have additional pins available so if somebody hasn’t had an opportunity to RSVP, they can always give me a call or just see me before the ceremony. If not, then we can do it during the ceremony. I just won’t call their name,” said Dillon.
Although the 50 year anniversary was celebrated in 2017, Dillon says the effort to respectively honor each Vietnam Veteran with a commemorative pin continues on this March 29th, also known as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

FEEDING SEGUIN
Showcasing jobs to Seguin, Navarro seniors
SEDC brings the workforce to students
(Seguin) -- With graduation just weeks away, local high school seniors from Seguin ISD and Navarro ISD had the opportunity this week to participate in the annual Seguin Career Day.
Described as an interactive and dynamic experience that facilitates a connection between high school students and local Seguin businesses, the students came together to envision their futures at the Seguin High School Wellness Center.
Seguin Career Day is an event implemented by the Seguin Economic Development Corporation to ensure the long-term viability of employers within the Seguin community. For years, Seguin employers have reported a sizeable gap between the talent that they need to keep growing their businesses and the talent they can find. Over the past couple of years, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation has collaborated with existing industry, local school districts, and other economic development partners to try and close the skills gap and create a stronger talent pipeline.
SEDC officials say Seguin Career Day helps to close the skills gap by bringing employers and students together. On Wednesday, over 20 employers from the Seguin community showcased their company’s operations, career pathways and highlight the educational attainment and skill sets that are required for success in that company’s industry.
The event encouraged students to explore their interests while providing them the opportunity to learn how they can apply those interests to future professional endeavors.
“Seguin Career Day is a great opportunity for our students to meet our local employers and learn more about potential careers in our community. We appreciate the chance to work together with Navarro ISD and the Seguin Economic Development Corporation to make this day happen. We look forward to the positive outcome this event

will have for our students, local industry, and our community,” said Rick Bough, director of career and technical education for Seguin ISD.
A variety of employers were represented at this year’s Seguin Career Day, showcasing manufacturing, healthcare, utilities, public service, and more. SEDC officials say the event also served much like a job fair providing some students the ability to walk away from the event with job offers to begin work immediately following their graduation.
“The Seguin Career Day is a great opportunity for the students within both school districts,” said Josh Schneuker, Executive Director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation. “This event will create a conduit between the businesses that need employees and the students looking for career opportunities in the Seguin area. This is also a great opportunity for our graduates that are going off to college to see that Seguin has a lot to offer when they get their degree.”
Students who walked away from this week’s Seguin Career Day with job offers will have the opportunity to participate in a subsequent event called “Seguin Industry Signing Day” scheduled for May 2024.
Seguin Industry Signing Day is an extension of a national event that applauds high school seniors who made the decision to pursue a career in skilled trades, a sector in high demand that continues to face an immense labor shortage. School officials say this program is similar to that of a student’s athletic scholarship signing day.
“Yes, it’s over 50 years already but it started in 2017 and marked the anniversary and the President back then had said this is the official date -March 29 for our Vietnam Veteran Day to honor veterans and this is when the
commemorative organization started with offering a pin to thank the veterans,” said Dillon.
Dillon says the group is especially excited about hosting the ceremony this year as it will be held in the new Veterans Outreach Center.

Those who have already received their pin are also encouraged to stop by today for a group photo and further recognition.
In addition to the pinning ceremony, Dillon says the center will also unveil a new effort designed to give the veterans the recognition that they each deserve.
“This year, we are going to start the Honor Wall and each year, we are going to post or put a picture of them
or a certificate or something like that honoring their contributions in the area and stuff like that but we will start that this year,” said Dillon.
Today’s event will also welcome special guest speaker Lt. General Brad Webb.

Colorectal Cancer Increases Among Younger Adults
(San Diego, CA) -- Doctors say colorectal cancer is steadily rising among younger adults across the country. The American Cancer Society says diagnoses are up roughly 25% since 1995, for people younger than 55. Dr. Darren Sigal is the director of Gastrointestinal Oncology at Scripps Clinic. He tells ABC-10, it’s important to pay attention, telling doctors and patients, do NOT ignore the symptoms just because they show up in young people. He also subscribes to thinking outside the treatment box, saying his patients have had success with immunotherapy. Colorectal cancer is now the number one cause of cancer-related death for men under 50 and the number two cause for women. Just 20 years ago, it was the number four cause of death for both age groups. Symptoms include a change in bowel habits, blood in stool, belly pain that doesn’t go away, and unintentional weight loss.
Research Reveals Most Americans Support Marijuana Legalization
(Washington, D.C.) -- Most Americans now believe marijuana should be legal. A survey from Pew Research Center found 88-percent of Americans think cannabis should be legal for recreational or medicinal use. While nearly six out of ten believe it should be legal for both uses, around three out of ten think it should only be legal for medical purposes. About ten-percent believe it should be outlawed. The survey also revealed that more Americans disagree over the effects of legalizing the drug, with only half believing legalization has a positive economic impact.
SCOTUS Hears Arguments In Mifepristone Case
(Washington, DC) -- The Supreme Court heard arguments on a case yesterday that could limit access to the abortion pill mifepristone [[ mif-ah-priss-tone ]]. Justices are reviewing an appeals court decision blocking recent FDA changes that made the medication more widely available. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argued on behalf of the Biden administration, claiming the ruling would inflict “grave harm” on women across the nation. Erin Hawley, who represents a doctors’ group suing the FDA, claimed the agency unlawfully removed critical safeguards for use of the drug. She argued if complications emerge from medication abortions, anti-abortion doctors could be forced to choose between helping a woman with a life-threatening condition and violating their conscience.
