Voting underway for KWED Top Choice Awards

(Seguin) -- The top choices in a number of business and community categories will be chosen during this year’s KWED Top Choice Awards. The contest is a chance for the radio station’s listeners to recognize the top businesses in the community.

KWED General Manager Darren Dunn says Top Choice is a fun and easy way to honor those businesses, churches and organizations that help to make Seguin a great place to live and work.

“This is our second annual Top Choice awards. It’s a contest for our KWED listeners to name their top choices in a number of categories. We are looking for the top businesses, organizations and individuals in our community. Bragging rights are on the line, but more importantly its a chance to give an atta boy to those folks that make our lives a little bit better here in Seguin and Guadalupe County. There are dozens of categories for

you to vote in, and we want to hear your top choices in each one,” said Dunn.

The Top Choice categories are full of nominees submitted by people who know these businesses best. Dunn says it’s now time to take those selections and figure out the Top Choice in each category.

“The nominations were all based on KWED listener input at the beginning of this year. Those nominations were used to create the official Top Choice ballot. Voting is easy. It’s all online. You can vote once per day. We thought that was the best way to make the voting fair. The voting officially started this week and runs through Monday, April 17. We want all of our listeners to check it out and vote each day during the contest. Help to recognize your Top Choices, which will formally be announced during a special publication and on the radio in the middle of May,” said Dunn. Choice, pg. 3

Preparing for the worst –– GRMC to participate in regional emergency practice

(Seguin) -- While it might look like a real emergency, the public can rest assure that there will not be a mass injuring disaster this Thursday over at GRMC.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) will be taking part in a mock disaster drill in conjunction with Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council (aka STRAC) and other hospitals in its trauma service area.

According to hospital officials, the goal of conducting the exercise is to provide local hospitals the opportunity to assess their emergency response, coordination of staff and recovery efforts should a real crisis occur; and to provide STRAC an opportunity to test communication and resource management in the trauma service area.

The drill will focus on response plans for a multicasualty event in the community which would trigger a sudden influx of patients, media, and concerned community members. This training exercise will include front line hospital staff, contract security, and volunteers.

Hospital officials say they caution community

members to expect to see emergency responders at GRMC looking and acting as if there were a true disaster. Signage will be placed throughout the facility to notify those present about the exercise.

More importantly, they say regular emergency department operations and patient care throughout the hospital facility will continue as usual during Thursday's drill.

Future Navarro ISD superintendent reacts to appointment

(Seguin) -- The lone finalist for superintendent of schools in the Navarro ISD is sharing her excitement about being appointed to the position.

After unanimously being selected last week, Mandy Epley shared that excitement in a statement to Seguin Radio KWED and the Seguin Daily News.

"Navarro ISD is a community built on a solid foundation of tradition and pride when it comes to providing engaging educational and extracurricular opportunities for all students. I look forward to meeting

the students, staff, and the entire Navarro ISD community and collaborating to begin the work of expanding and enriching student

opportunities, managing growth, and supporting all students to grow and reach their full potential. I am excited, and eager to listen, learn, and lead as a part of the Panther Family."

Epley now endures the 21day waiting period before she can officially be hired for the job. As soon as those 21 days are up, Epley who currently serves as the assistant superintendent of strategic initiatives and programs in the Comal ISD, hopes to immediately begin the transition of taking over the reins at Navarro.

Choice, continued.

Dunn says they revamped the process a little bit after last year’s inaugural Top Choice Awards. He says people loved the contest, but they wanted to make it a little bit better for the nominees and for the voters who participate in the voting.

“This is fun. It’s really cool to see how much people care about and support these local businesses, groups and organizations. It’s bragging rights, truthfully it’s more meaningful than that. That’s why we hope that every KWED listener will take the time to vote. There are lots of categories. If you’re not familiar with a particular category, you can skip it, but we want you to vote in as many of the categories as you can. That way we know we are able to name our Top Choices in 2023,” said Dunn.

The ballots can be accessed online at seguintoday.com. A link to the Top Choice ballot can also be found on the KWED and Seguin Daily News Facebook page. Again, voting is underway now and runs through Monday, April 17.

Baseball Completes Sweep of St. Thomas

WEIMAR, Texas — Texas Lutheran Baseball finished off the sweep of St. Thomas by taking both games of Saturday’s doubleheader at Veterans Park in Weimar, Texas, winning game one 8-2 and finishing the sweep with a 9-6 victory. The Bulldogs clinched the series with an 8-2 win in the first of two games on Saturday.

Tyler Post went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored, while Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) and Holden Philippus (San Antonio/ San Antonio Christian) also drove in runs.

Diego Vinton (Richmond/George Ranch) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits. He finished with a career-high 10 strikeouts and picked up his second win of the season.

After falling behind 1-0 in the second, Texas Lutheran jumped out to a 3-1 lead with three hits in the top of the third. Post started the scoring with a two-RBI double before scoring on an error from the St. Thomas second baseman.

After the Celts cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth, Texas Lutheran would pull away with a five run ninth inning. Aric Vasquez and Holden Philippus would start the high scoring inning with RBI singles before Tyler Post would drive in Vasquez with a sacrifice fly. Philippus and Holden Kesselring (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) would score on wild pitches to bring the game to its final score of 8-2.

Brendan Beard (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst) would earn the save, throwing 3.2 shutout innings in relief, striking out six.

The Bulldogs (15-12, 6-3 SCAC) trailed 6-4 going into the seventh inning before scoring four runs over the course of the final three innings to grab the lead.

Hayden Kesselring went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. Fellow New Braunfels High School alum Randy Huerta (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) went 1-for-4 with a solo home run while Niko Garcia (Houston/Langham Creek) went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Tyler Post was 0-for-1 with four walks –one walk shy of matching the program record for walks in a single game.

Zach Longshore (Richmond/Ft. Bend Travis) pitched four shutout innings out of the bullpen, striking out five to earn the win. Keene Kreusler (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) got his first start of the season and struck out 11 batters over five innings of work.

Aric Vasquez scored on a St. Thomas wild pitch to give TLU a 1-0 first inning lead, but the Celts responded with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1.

The Celts would launch a solo homer in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead and that’s where the game would stay until a three-run homer from Hayden Kesselring, the first of his college career, to give Texas Lutheran a 4-2 lead.

Four more Celts runs came across in the sixth to give the Celts a 6-4 lead through six innings.

TLU tied the game at six following a two-RBI single from Niko Garcia

in the seventh. Randy Huerta would break the tie in the eighth with a solo homer and TLU would extend their lead in the ninth with Mason Goudeau and Holden Philippus scoring on a wild pitch.

Pollen Count Expected To Be High After Abnormally Wet

Winter

(Undated) -- While California’s drought conditions continue to improve after heavy rains pounded the state this winter, spring is now in the air along with pollen. Trees, weeds, grasses, and flowers are already blooming and that brings allergy symptoms including itchy, watery eyes and nose, sneezing and a runny nose. Dr. Don Bucklin, a preventive medicine doctor, says it’s tough to avoid pollen since it travels in the wind but points out that keeping windows shut and using air conditioning in your house and vehicle when the pollen count is high will help a lot. Bucklin says it’s also important to diligently vacuum indoors and replace your furnace filter with a Hepa filter.

Ask the Master GARDENERS

Q: What is the plant that is all over my yard? When I walk past it, the leaves stick to the legs of my pants. Should I use weed killer on it?

A: T his is a question that comes up every year. Galium aparine, an annual in the Madder family, has many nicknames, including Sticky Weed, Sticky Willy, Velcro Plant, Cleavers, Goosegrass, and Catchweed Bedstraw. It is native throughout North America. Do try to pull it all up because you don’t want the seeds to form. Luckily the plant can be pulled out of the ground quite easily by hand. I already have gathered two large piles of plants. Weed killer does not need to be used.

Another question that comes up this time of year is whether or not to use a weed and feed product on your lawn. Doug Welsh, Extension Horticulturist, assures us that we should not do this because the timing for fertilizers is not the same as the timing for herbicides. He says that pre-emergent herbicides for summer weeds should be applied in late winter (February), and spring lawn fertilizers should be applied in mid-spring after you have mowed the lawn twice and it is actively growing.

Q: When can I move my plumaria and other plants back outside?

A: I have not moved mine yet, but will probably do so quite soon. I normally let my Phalaenopsis orchids spend the summer on the back porch (mainly to save having to use my grow light), but I want to enjoy

their blooms in my house a little longer. I notice that my neighbors already have their potted plants back outside. Make sure that the foliage on your plants doesn’t sunscald. Now is a good time to fertilize your potted outdoor plants.

Q: What vegetable gardening chores should I be doing now?

A: Fertilize your vegetable plants. Check your garden daily for pests and other problems. If your fruit trees have too much fruit, it is best to thin the young fruit to allow the remaining ones to grow bigger. Otherwise, as happened to me last year, all the heavy pears can cause the limb to bend or break.

Q: I’ve been told to buy produce in the store when it is in season in Texas. What produce is harvested in April and is available in local markets?

A: Many local vegetables and fruits are available in April: green beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, greens, onions, peaches and strawberries. Grapefruit and oranges are also probably still available. Look forward to May when much more produce comes into season.

FYI: Don’t forget to keep your bird baths full. And remember, don’t mow down your bluebonnets and other wildflowers when they finish blooming. Let them go to seed. Your lawn may look a little ragged but you will have many more plants next year.
