Families invited to make plans now for first ever Matador Family Bash
(Seguin) -- A night of kids games and a movie on the big screen are what in store for the first ever Matador Family Bash; One Town, One Movie. The Seguin community is invited to mark their calendars now for the free fun event scheduled for this Thursday night at Seguin High School’s Matador Stadium.
Hosting the event is the Seguin ISD Superintendent’s Student Advisory Team which consists of students representing campuses from across the district. Coming up with the idea to host such a community and district wide event was Danielle Nyame, the chair of the superintendent’s student advisory team.
The high school sophomore says the idea was not only sparked by the Back to School Bash held at the beginning of the school year but more of a way to include everyone in a districtwide celebration.
“So in my time in these past two members, I’ve been a member of Meet in the Middle. Meet in the Middle is an organization that not only highlights special needs students but also allows inclusivity with special needs students and non-special needs students. Because of this, it really has inspired me to take a real interest in the community and also create a change. I was like wait, why don’t we do something.... Bash, pg. 2
Seguin Today is the BEES KNEES!
(McQueeney) -- The shoreline at Lake Breeze Ski Lodge in McQueeney makes for a pretty good time, but anyone who actually hangs out there knows the best time is out on the water. Seguin Today, KWED's monthly magazine, recently joined Jimmie Price on his boat before watching the final Ski Bees performance. The specially scheduled performance was held just
days before the lake was to be drained for dam repairs.
Price shared tidbits about life on the water starting with rule 1 which is no shoes on the boat. Those tidbits were all shared while speeding around the lake during a tour of the lakefront properties that will all be dramatically impacted when the lake waters goes down. Bees, pg. 3

Heritage Museum to celebrate 24 years
Special by Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB director
(Seguin) -- The Seguin Heritage Museum is celebrating a milestone and is inviting the public to come help celebrate. On April 14, the museum will be celebrating its 24th anniversary from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with door prizes, hors d’oeuvres, and beverages.
The museum has a lot to celebrate with the addition of their new media room which will showcase videos and stories of Seguin. The new room will help bring the stories of Seguin and the museum to life for visitors of the museum.
The anniversary party is also a time for the museum to honor its patrons and reconnect with its members.
“You’re welcome to stop by to see the museum and say hello,” said Debbie Armstrong, a board member with the Heritage Museum, “We would love to meet you and show you the museum.”
Visitors during the anniversary party will also get to see the museum’s newest exhibit dedicated to some of the women who founded Seguin. Information on women who served the community as educators, nurses, elected officials, and more are on display.
The museum is also accepting new members. The cost for membership is $40.00 for an individual, $50.00 for a family, $65.00 for businesses, and $125.00 for corporate. Membership dues help the museum cover their operational expenses.
After the anniversary party, everyone is invited to come to the Memorial Rose Garden for Seguin Main Street’s Moonlight & Roses from 7 to 9 p.m. The event will
Bash, continued.
“similar but for everyone, community, little kids, grow-ups, elders, etc. Just open it up to all,” said Nyame.
Nyame says the Matador fair will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. followed by the movie from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
“The Matador Family Bash is actually a two-part event. The first part is hosting a fair. The fair is going to have various student organization groups that are not only going to highlight the student organizations that they are part of but they are also going to host games for the little kids to interact but will also highlight different parts of Seguin ISD. Then, the second half of the event is going to be showing a movie on the jumbotron. We have not hosted this -- a move on the jumbotron -in forever. So we want to bring this
feature desserts, jazz music, and the presentation of the 2022 downtown awards. There will be commemorative wine glasses available for purchase as well as picnic baskets filled with goodies. You can order your picnic basket by stopping at the Visitor Center at 116 North Camp Street or online at https://MoonlightandRoses2023.eventbrite. com. The wine glasses are $15.00 each and the baskets are $75.00.
The proceeds from the baskets and glasses go towards the Seguin Main Street Program and its downtown beautification efforts.
There will be floral arrangements donated from local florists that will be raffled off throughout the evening. The Seguin Main Street would also like to thank Carter Memorials for donating the engraving of the award plaques.
Make plans to spend your Friday evening in downtown Seguin.
back to hopefully start a tradition in the Seguin ISD and the Seguin community,” said Nyame.
All the games and activities during the fair will be free. Nyame says the only cost will be concessions during the movie.
“So for concessions, it’s going to be a limited menu which means we are not going to have any
hamburgers, sausage wraps but we will be serving hot dogs, popcorn, pickles, drinks, candies etc. Now, you can’t bring your food onto the stadium because we barely just rebuilt the stadium. But what you can do is you can eat inside the bleachers and then come and lay down. Bring your blankets, bring your pillows, bring whatever you want to get cozy and watch the movie on the stadium. Our mail goal is just to have the Seguin ISD and the Seguin community have fun,” said Nyame.
The featured movie on Thursday will be “Rio.” The movie features a macaw named “Blu” who is captured by smugglers and who has never learned to fly but has a “happy” domesticated life in Minnesota.” It’s that time in captivity that he realizes he is not the last of his breed.

Bees, continued.
Repairs to the dam are expected to take between 2 to 3 years, so lake residents have a long road ahead of them.
Once the Ski Bee show started, Price gave Seguin Today a first-hand experience of being out on the water while helping encourage downed skiers, returning them to shore.
The Ski Bees show included big air jumps, twists and spins on swivel skis and more before rounding it all out with a three tiered pyramid that buzzed around the lake as the sun went down.
Also in this issue, Seguin Today visited the Beeswax Department at the Gretchen Bee Ranch where Thién Gretchen shared her passion for beekeeping and crafting with their wax. This month’s experiences can be found in the April edition of Seguin Today. Copies are now available at various locations around town including in the lobby of KWED and the Seguin Daily News. The radio station is located at 609 E. Court. St.

Strother Makes HISTORY in Bulldogs’ SWEEP
SEGUIN, Texas -- Senior pitcher Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) already held numerous school, SCAC, and NCAA records in her illustrious career with the Bulldogs, but she added to her stellar resume on Saturday by becoming the winningest pitcher in the history of Texas Lutheran softball.
Strother earned career win No. 59, passing former Bulldog Amanda Stevens (2002-05), as No. 4 Texas Lutheran (27-3, 11-1 SCAC) finished off a three-game sweep of Southwestern (13-18, 6-6 SCAC) with a 120, five-inning run-rule victory. Strother’s career record now stands at 59-2, while her season mark is 13-0.
Perfect through three innings against the Pirates, Strother only allowed two hits in the game while striking out eight. It’s her seventh shutout this season and 22nd of her career.
In addition to the wins record, Strother boasts the top school marks in win percentage (.967), ERA (0.77, 2022), single-season wins (25, 2022), and single-season win-loss percentage (1.000, 2022).
The Bulldogs beat the Pirates by a combined score of 24-4 in the final two games of the series. With the series sweep, TLU has not lost a conference series since joining the conference in 2014, and have won 76 of its last 78 SCAC regular season games.
The Bulldogs were powered by a five RBI showing from freshman Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody) and the eight strikeout performance from Strother.
Bailey Hudgeons (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) put the Bulldogs up early with a RBI double to left field, scoring Madison Johnson (Round Rock/Round Rock) in the first.
In the second inning, an Annie Kay (Sinton/Sinton) sacrifice fly would score Reagan Hillis (Cedar Park/Cedar Park) to give TLU a 2-0 lead. Three consecutive walks would load the bases and set the stage for a Serena Gonzalez grand slam - breaking the game open to a 6-0
lead for TLU. The grand slam was the first of Gonzalez’s career and her SCAC leading eighth home run of the season, bringing her within one of Haley Padilla’s freshman record set in 2018.
After her record breaking performance in game two of the series, Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek) would plate a run in the bottom of the third to extend the Bulldogs lead to 7-0.
The fourth inning saw five more Bulldog runs cross as the Bulldogs scored in every inning. An RBI double from Gonzalez would score Madison Johnson to put the run-rule into effect as TLU took an 8-0 lead. Harleigh Russell (Fort Worth/Boswell) would score on a Southwestern throwing error before Reagan Jones (Pearland/Friendswood) would drive in Bailey Hudgeons with an RBI single. Riley Futrell (Florence/ Florence), who pinch ran for Jones, would steal second as part of a double steal that would score Reagan Hillis before scoring on an RBI single from Caelee Clark for the Bulldogs final run of the game.
TLU improved to 27-3 on the year with 12 run-rule victories. The Bulldogs offense has outscored opponents 215-43 while the pitching staff has tossed an NCAA Division-III leading 16 shutouts and struck out 159 batters, allowing opponents to bat just .190 on the year.
The Bulldogs turn their attention to a three-game series against the Trinity Tigers at the newly renovated Trinity Softball Field in San Antonio on April 14-15. First pitch for Friday’s first game is scheduled for 5 PM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

Becerra: Abortion Pill Ruling Sets Dangerous Precedent Becerra: Abortion Pill Ruling Sets Dangerous Precedent (Washington, DC) -- A top Biden administration official says a Texas judge’s ruling on an abortion pill could set a dangerous precedent for all FDA-approved drugs. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra [[ HAH-vee-air beh-SEH-ruh ]] said on CNN’s State of the Union the FDA-approval process would be “turned upside down” if one judge is allowed to impose his own opinion over scientific research. Becerra said his department has already filed an appeal against the ruling and admitted there was a “good chance” it could go to the Supreme Court. He would not comment when asked if the FDA would simply ignore the ruling, as some lawmakers and legal experts have suggested. Becerra did say “all options are on the table.”
CDC: Health Care Providers Should Be On The Lookout For Marburg Virus
(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is telling doctors to watch for Marburg virus after outbreaks in two African countries. Similar to Ebola, the disease is rare but could be fatal and involves a high fever that causes heavy bleeding. There are no cases in the U.S. according and the risk is low, but the CDC is urging health care providers to be on high alert for any cases coming in from abroad. The CDC also told doctors to ask for a detailed travel history from patients they suspect have Marburg virus and treat them under isolation until they test negative.
Shorter Time Breastfeeding May Still Have Benefits
(Glasgow, Scotland) -- A new study finds breastfeeding for the first six weeks of life may reduce the risk of developing behavioral or learning problems. The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for six months, but the study’s findings indicate even mixed feeding for less time could be beneficial to a child’s learning development. Researchers at the University of Glasgow analyzed data from nearly 200,000 children in Scotland born after 2004 who had been exclusively breastfed, mixed-fed or formula fed for the first six to eight weeks and who later attended a state school or special needs school. It found that both mixed feeding and exclusively breastfeeding cut the risk of developing learning problems more than formula feeding did. The study also found those who were exclusively breastfed had a lower risk of communication problems as well as social, emotional and behavioral difficulties. The study is published in the journal PLOS Medicine.
