Tickets still available for Cumbia Under the Stars

(Seguin) -- What better way to honor a mariachi singer from Seguin battling cancer than through a night of music and dancing. A full fledged fundraising effort will be underway tonight on the campus of Texas Lutheran University for Carla Medina, the lead vocalist of Mariachi Las Altenas -- an all female mariachi band from San Antonio hailed as one of the finest of its kind in the country.

Medina will be supported by tonight's Cumbia Under the Stars fundraiser being hosted by TLU's Mexican American Student Association (MASA).

Over a year ago, Medina was diagnosed with stage 4 oral cancer. Medina, a founder of the 14-member mariachi group, is not only a native of Seguin but has supported the local community with performances at Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin's Noche De Gala contest and other festivities.

TLU Professor Dr. Cesar Silva says tonight's fundraiser has been a student and community spirited event. He says they wanted to offer something fun while raising money for a good cause.

"We will have live music going the entire time. We have a band coming out of Austin. They are a cover band. They are called Santa Lucia. We have a surprise performance which I'm not allowed to talk about but it's a beautiful surprise performance and then we have food for everybody. We have a silent auction based on a lot of donations and out of the kindness of the community of Seguin and from some members of Texas Lutheran University as well. So, we will have that set up. We will have face painting for the kids. We will have balloon animals for the kids and hopefully some dancing and it's happening right near Langner Hall. It's called Alumni Plaza.

Life finds a way Tonight at Park West

(Seguin) -- Get ready for some prehistoric fun during tonight’s Movie Night in the Park. The Seguin Parks and Recreation Department is inviting all families out to tonight’s free movie showing at Park West.

Lindsay Hajek says the parks department will “Take 2” in its efforts to launch this year’s movie schedule.

“This will be our first movie this year. We are showing Jurassic Park. Unfortunately, we were very sad, we had to cancel Barbie. We are going to reschedule that one to the end of the year, but we did have three movies planned for this whole year,” said Hajek.

Hajek says hosting the movie at Park West is also very exciting

for the city and encourages folks to come out and get cozy.

“We will set up our enormous blow-up movie screen. We’ve got a wonderful projector as well so we encourage families to bring their own chair, their own blanket, snacks -whatever you would like to bring in to enjoy the movie. We will have the movie starting at 8:45 p.m. and we will also have food trucks on site so if you would like to support the local food trucks, they will be out there. We have snow cones from Kona Ice. We have K&J Roasted Corn. Easy’s Snack Shack and we will also have Any Wich Way that will be there as well. So, a ton of a variety of food trucks but feel free to bring your own food as well,” said Hajek.

Families will also want to come out a bit early. That’s because Hajek says there will be a special guest at tonight’s movie.

“Tonight, we will have a special guest visitor. We are going to have Blue the Raptor there for a photo opp. So, Blue is going to come from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and (he) is from an organization called Jurassic SA and just a quick photo opp. They will have a line going and you can see the raptor and then get prepared for the movie,” said Hajek.

Helping to make the free movie possible is Seguin’s HEB. Again, the movie gets underway at 8:45 p.m. The screen will be located on the soccer field at Park West.

Pregnancy Care Center to host free family activities plus hamburger sale

(Seguin) -- The South Texas Pregnancy Care Center will again be gathering families together this Saturday for a fun day of celebrating the group's purpose as well its future endeavors.

The non-profit organization will be offering a host of free family activities as part of its annual Festival for Life. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Columbus Club of Seguin Hall.

Executive Director Janice Weaver says the event will offer plenty of fun and is sure to keep the kids busy.

"Several years ago, the South Texas Pregnancy Care Center sponsored a Walk for Life where we would invite folks to come and raise funds and walk around the square but we decided we wanted to have something a little bit more exciting to reach more people then what we were able to do with the walk and so, we came up with the idea of the Festival for Life and it is a family fun event. We are going to have live music from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Our event ends at 3 p.m. but the last hour is going to be a dessert auction. We have some fabulous desserts that are being donated by some renowned chefs in our area. We are having a rock-climbing wall. We are having bouncy houses, a big inflatable obstacle course, a dunking booth -- we are going to have a photo booth and balloon animals -- just a great time,' said Weaver.

Weaver says the idea behind the event is to not only support the pregnancy care center but to invite the community over so that it can learn more about its mission. "Some people say 'oh, well I'm not pregnant' or 'I don't need your services,' or whatever but everybody knows someone who is in need. So, we do provide free services. We do pregnancy tests and ultrasounds. We do testing for sexually transmitted infections and then we also have a baby boutique that can really serve a young family if they are in need because every time they come to see us, they earn points and then they get to buy things for their little ones and can really just outfit their entire

family with things that they need when they have a little one coming or a little one that has arrived," said Weaver.

Although most activities are free, Weaver says the group will be selling hamburgers while supplies last.

"We are going to serve a hamburger meal for $10. It's a burger and chips and a drink and the Knights of Columbus are cooking hamburgers for us on the grill. So, it's a grilled hamburger. It's going to be really good," said Weaver.

In addition to sharing its mission, the group will also be sharing details about its future location that will be opening soon. The pregnancy care center which is currently located on West Court Street will be making the move to its new future home on East Kingsbury Street next door to the Texas Department of Public Safety building. Although the center will be making the move in May, an official grand opening won't be held until July 13th.

Navarro’s Landun Taylor makes college baseball commitment

— On Wednesday, Navarro High School senior Landun Taylor accepted an offer to play college baseball at Southeastern Baptist College.

Taylor was named to the Texas High School Coaches Association Class 4A All-State First Team as a junior in 2023. Taylor was also a First Team All-District 284A selection as an outfielder. And he was named to the Academic AllDistrict team as well last season.

This season, Taylor is tops on the Panthers with a .493 average. He also leads Navarro with 33 hits, 25 runs, seven triples and a home run.

On the mound, Taylor is 2-1 for the Panthers with a 2.03

ERA. He has pitched in five games so far this season.

A multi-sport athlete at Navarro High School, Taylor also played for the Panther football team. He was named an All-District defensive end in 2022 and 2023. Southeastern Baptist College is located in Laurel, Mississippi. The Chargers are a National Christian College Athletic Association DivisionII baseball program. Their head coach is Rafael Farrell.

Landun Taylor and the Navarro Panthers are currently in second place in District 284A with five games left in this season.

Navarro will play at third place Cuero on Friday.

Patsy A. “Pat” Harborth, age 72 of Boerne, formerly of Seguin/Geronimo, passed away on March 21, 2024. Pat was born in Seguin, Texas on February 5, 1952, to Norma (Bose) and Marvin Harborth. She was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in San Antonio.

Pat retired after 32 years of service with the University of Texas at San Antonio Police Department. During her career, she will be remembered as the founding and active member of the Roadrunner Cat Coalition at

UTSA. She was also an active member of a sorority, Texas Preceptor Alpha Kappa Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

Pat is preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother, Lucille Harborth, and brothers, Daniel Harborth and Melvin Harborth.

Survivors include her sister, Shirley Hayden, and husband Tom; sister-inlaw, Nelda Harborth; special cousin, Rick Harborth; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, many friends, and numerous fur babies.

A memorial service is being planned for a later date.

Martha Lucille Harrelson Jandt, age 94 of Seguin, passed away on April 9, 2024. Martha was born on October 30, 1929, in Horry County, South Carolina to Ruth (Graham) and Coy Harrelson.

Martha will be remembered as a lifelong teacher educating many children to their success. She enjoyed gardening and raising cattle. She was a member of the American Legion H U Wood Post 245 Auxiliary and the Seguin Sunset Lions Club. Martha and Robert were members of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church for many years.

Martha is preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Robert “Bob” Alvin Jandt, Maj., USAF (Ret.), her parents, her brother, Bruce Harrelson, sister, Evelyn Harrelson Marsh, and her

Biden Condemns AZ Supreme Court Ruling On Abortion (Washington, DC) -- The Biden administration is condemning the Arizona Supreme Court’s ruling upholding a near-total ban on abortion. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the ruling is a direct result of the end of Roe v. Wade. President Biden in a statement said Republicans are “committed to ripping away women’s freedom.” The 1864 law, from when Arizona was still a U.S. territory, bans all abortions except for risk to the mother. The decision comes a day after Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump said abortion should be left up to the individual states.

NAIA Bans Transgender Women From Competing In Women’s Sports (Kansas City, MO) -- The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics is banning transgender women from competing in women’s sports. The move makes it the first major college sports governing body in the U.S. to do so. Only students athletes whose assigned sex at birth is female will be able to compete following a 20-to-nothing vote in favor by The organization’s Council of Presidents. The NAIA makes up over 80-thousand athletes at primarily smaller colleges.

California Launches Campaign to Battle Alzheimer’s (San Diego, CA) -- California is launching a campaign to battle Alzheimer’s. The California Department of Public Health says this is a push to boost awareness for brain health and break barriers of fear. The statewide campaign is called “Take on Alzheimer’s.” Doctors are hoping to spark conversations within families and with medical professionals. Dr. Lucia Abascal says Alzheimer’s is currently the third leading cause of death in the California and expected to increase. Consumer Reports Calls For Lunchables To Be Removed From School Menus

(Washington, DC) -- There’s a push to kick Lunchables off school menus. Consumer Reports issued a warning Tuesday saying the school cafeteria version of the popular lunch snack contains too much sodium. Last year, Lunchables developed two new versions of the cheese, meat and cracker snacks especially for school lunch programs. Consumer Reports says the turkey and cheddar school-lunch versions contained nearly 200 more milligrams of sodium than the store-bought Lunchables. The nonprofit group says it’s petitioning the USDA to remove the snacks from school cafeterias.
