Navarro ISD wraps up superintendent search by naming lone finalist district,” said Gilcrease.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

Gilcrease says the school district was honored to have such a great pool of candidates in which to choose from. He says the quality of that group only makes Russell's selection even more impressive.

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro ISD has unanimously named a lone finalist for the position of superintendent of schools. After months of conducting a superintendent search, the school board on Tuesday night announced Wendi Russell as its selection for the position. Russell currently serves as the interim superintendent for Pecos Barstow Toyah ISD located in West Texas. Russell is a 30 year veteran in the field of education and is originally from Sherman located in North Texas. In addition to Pecos, she has also previously served as an assistant superintendent in VanAlstyne ISD.

“It was extremely difficult. We had 39 applicants and we had a hard time narrowing it down. We finally narrowed it to eight and then did interviews and then after the interviews, we had another difficult decision – we narrowed it down to three and basically, she just rose to the top. I mean her energy and her love of education, it reminded a lot of us of how we love being on the board and love serving the Navarro ISD,” said Gilcrease.

Russell tells the Seguin Daily News that she is excited and ready to begin her new journey in Navarro.

Even through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gilcrease says the district is proud to have successfully completed its search. He says the district was committed to finding the very best -pressing through any and all challenges.

“I’m humbled by the offer and I am truly excited. I’m excited about the great things that are happening in Navarro and I want to be able to come in and expand the great things that are happening and maybe grow new programs as well so we can offer a premiere education as well for all of our students,” said Russell. Russell says after learning about the Navarro ISD, it didn't take her long to realize that this was a place that she wanted to be. “Honestly as I looked at districts to apply, I’m very selective in any district that I would have applied in. I’ve only applied for about three superintendent jobs so the district is so community based that the district drives the community and they have such great parent involvement, student involvement and that’s I was looking for -- was a place that has a hometown feel and it felt like home the minute that I drove in and we stayed in a hotel and look around through the community. It

Wendi Russell felt like home and that speaks volumes to the phenomenal things that have been happening in Navarro and what is to come with the growth,” said Russell.

Navarro Board President Dr. Greg Gilcrease says the school board is excited about welcoming Russell to Navarro. Gilcrease says Russell is exactly what the district was hoping for.

Throughout her years, Russell also picked up experience having served as a middle school principal, technology consultant, and elementary school teacher.

“She had a lot of the same qualities that Dee had as far as cares for the kids, very good on curriculum and instruction. She has a good knowledge of finance. I mean she was ready to lead this school

“We used Walsh, Anderson and Ann Dixon as our consultant and we talked about this quite a bit is we had a lot of quality applicants. We didn’t really have anybody drop out. I mean everyone that we wanted to talk to was able to come and talk to us. We were very social distanced and so we had everybody come and interview in person. It was a very quality applicant pool. We were very surprised of how good the candidates were,” said Gilcrease. By law, the school board may not hire Russell as the new superintendent for at least 21 days. That official date of hire is scheduled for May 5. Russell will replace current Superintendent Dee Carter who will retire at the end of the school year.

its downtown friends.

"The finale of the mixer is that we are going to be highlighting the first ever Virtual Third Thursday Event in Seguin that is hosted by the Downtown Business Alliance and so we are going to have a little presentation, a little tour of their facilities and on how to shop online for all of their great specials that are going on for Third Thursday so that will be our presentation in the mixer and so it should be really fun and interesting," said Gravett.

(Seguin) -- Get ready to mix and mingle as you do a little business from the comfort of your couch. The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting its membership to tonight's first ever Virtual Business Mixer. Chamber President Kendy Gravett says it's been at least a couple of months that the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented the group from hosting its regularly scheduled After Hours Mixers at local business locations. This month, however, Gravett says the chamber isn't letting the virus stop them from networking. "We all miss our people. Business is still going on in a lot of cases but we aren't getting to time to spend with the most important thing which is our people. So, the chamber is hosting a Zoom meeting online as a mixer and we will have an opportunity for people to talk to each other, see each other's face and if you don't have a camera and a microphone on your computer, you can call in and introduce yourself so that everybody knows what number goes with what name and I'll attach your name to your number so everyone can see who is talking and who is in attendance and we are looking to have a good time," said Gravett. Gravett says if there was ever a time for its membership to pull together -- it is now. "We are all in this together and this gives us a way to bring

Gravett says the virtual online meeting will be simple to access. She says members shouldn't worry about logging on. "We have created an event on our chamber website so you will go to seguinchamber.com and go to the event and there will be instructions of how to log on and what to expect. We are also sending out a personal invitation with the same information to all of our chamber members so they will receive an email with the link and everything they need to know to get on the call," said Gravett. multiple people together to express what they are going through or talk about what they appreciate. I think we are really going to focus on encouraging words. It's really important for our community to know that the chamber is here for them. We are always

here online, however right now, it's really important to have a bigger presence online since that is what everybody is doing. We are restricted to that pretty much. So our plan is first of all, we want to give encouraging words and tell you what the chamber has to offer

as member benefits (and) talk about all of the resources that we have that are kept up to date on the chamber website," said Gravett. Gravett says the Virtual Mixer will also feature tonight's Third Thursday events with some of

A $250 attendance cash prize will also be drawn along with an attendance door prize for all those who log on via Zoom or via phone. The Virtual Chamber Mixer will be held today from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Zoom can be accessed via your mobile device, tablet or computer.

GRMC named America's Best Hospitals for Patient Safety By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe Regional Medical Center Receives the 2020 Women's Choice Award as one of America's Best Hospitals for Patient Safety. This award recognizes safe surgery practices and lower rates for complications and infections. (Seguin) --- Guadalupe Regional Medical Center has been named one of America's Best Hospitals for Patient Safety by the Women's Choice Award®, America's trusted referral source for the best in healthcare. The award signifies that GRMC is in the top eight percent of 4,814 U.S. hospitals for patient safety; specifically GRMC falls into the top four percent of U.S. hospitals for patient safety. "This national recognition from the Women's Choice Award signifies that GRMC is one of 379 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for patient safety in the U.S. by the Women's Choice Award", said Robert Haynes, CEO for Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. "This award confirms our testament to the high standard of care provided to patients every day by the staff at GRMC and to our dedication in providing highquality, safe care to every life we are privileged to touch." To receive the award, hospitals must also use an Inpatient Safe Surgery Checklist to assess effective communication and safe practices during three perioperative periods: prior to administration of anesthesia; prior to skin incision; and prior to the patient leaving the operating room or procedural area. "Very few hospitals can say they are the safest in the country, and by identifying those who are, the Women's Choice Award is helping the female consumer identify the hospitals in her area that

are dedicated to creating the safest patient experience," said Delia Passi, Founder and CEO of the Women's Choice Award. "This recognition is critical for women as they make 80% of healthcare decisions and need to know they are putting themselves-and their family members-in safe hands." The methodology used to select GRMC as one of America's Best Hospitals for Patient Safety is unique in that it evaluates 11 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) measures of infections and complications, Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results along with primary research about women's healthcare preferences. It is the only award recognizing excellence in patient safety based on robust criteria that consider patient satisfaction and clinical excellence. Healthcare has made significant strides in patient safety in recent years. Hospital-acquired conditions declined 21% from 2010 to 2015, resulting in 125,000 fewer patient deaths according to a report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Hospital-acquired conditions are conditions that a patient develops while in the hospital being treated for something else. SCAC Senior Spring Sport Recognition and Reflection - Men's Golf

(Lawrenceville, Ga.) - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference is recognizing and honoring all of its senior spring sport studentathletes who had their final seasons cut short by the COVID-19 outbreak.

This installment focuses on the seniors in men's golf. Represented among these 17 studentathletes are: 18 SCAC All-Academic selections 3 SCAC All-Sportsmanship selections 3 All-SCAC First Team selections 6 All-SCAC Second Team selections 1 SCAC Player-of-the-Year 1 SCAC Tournament Medalist 8 SCAC Championship titles 6 NCAA Tournament appearances 2 GCAA All-Region selections 2 GCAA All-American selection

After the NCAA made the unprecedented decision on March 12 to cancel all winter and spring championships due to the coronavirus pandemic, the SCAC Presidents Council decided to indefinitely suspend all regular season conference and non-conference competition. Although the league held out hope that by only suspeding play a window of opportunity may present itself for an abbreviated spring season with some form of tournament play the following month, with the virus continuing to spread throughout the country which has caused campuses who had originally hoped to remain open to close for the semester, the 2020 athletics season has effectively ended for over a thousand of the league's spring sport student-athletes along with the careers of 100+ seniors. Though some of the league's student-athletes may take advantage of a blanket waiver that would grant an additional season of participation, the SCAC office is honoring and recognizing all of its spring sport senior student athletes.

The Texas Lutheran seniors recognized include Nathan Haley and Evan Skaar.

Favorite memory as a SCAC student-athlete: Nathan Haley "Playing with my best friends."

Coronavirus Cases Over 582,000 As Of Monday Night

Wyoming Reports First Coronavirus-Related Death

(Undated) -- The coronavirus continues to spread around the U.S. Over 23-thousand-600 people had died from the respiratory illness as of Monday night. There were more than 582-thousand confirmed cases across the nation. New York accounted for roughly a third of those cases alone as it approached 200-thousand. On a positive note, the number of Americans who have recovered from the disease surpassed 44-thousand.

(Buffalo, WY) -- Wyoming is the last state to report a coronavirus-related death. Governor Mark Gordon announced the news via Twitter and says the resident had underlying health conditions. He says the state's first death due to the virus "serves as a grim reminder of the importance of following public health orders." The least populous U.S. state, Wyoming also has the fewest number of confirmed cases with 270.

Trump Says Country Could Reopen Ahead Of Schedule (Washington, DC) -- It appears efforts to get the economy going are heading in the right direction. President Trump told a White House briefing they are close to completing a plan to reopen the country, adding it could be done ahead of schedule. Trump says the plan, along with guidelines, will give Americans confidence to start returning to normal life. The commander-in-chief has been adamant about getting the economy rolling again as soon as possible. He has recently said America "wasn't built to be shut down."

Los Angeles Mayor Brings Update On COVID-19 Fight (Los Angeles, CA) -- Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti says folks in the city are doing their part to slow the spread of coronavirus. In a Monday afternoon press conference, Garcetti noted the 113 new confirmed cases of the respiratory illness represent an increase of less than three-percent from the day before. He said that single-digit percentage increase is a good sign, but he pointed out cases are still going up. It's the eighth day in a row that the rate has increased by single-digit percentage points. However, Garcetti also said there were 25 new deaths in Los Angeles County, bringing the total to 320.
