Seguin names Downtowner of the Year

City recognizes downtown leaders

(Seguin) - Movers and shakers in Downtown Seguin are not going unnoticed. The Seguin Main Street Program recently recognized those making an impact in downtown Seguin whether it be through business, community or volunteerism. The honorees were applauded during this year’s Moonlight and Roses event held Friday night in the Memorial Rose Garden located along Walnut Springs Park.

Helping to present this year’s batch of winners was Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen. Dodgen led the night with the presentation of this year’s 2022 Downtowner of the Yearan award recognizing the business having the largest impact in downtown Seguin.

“The Downtowner of the Year goes to Pecantown Books & Brews. The restaurant and bookstore opened in May of 2022 and quickly became a popular destination for locals and visitors. As the only independent bookstore in Seguin, New Braunfels, and San Marcos, Pecantown is filling a need for the whole region. They are hosting weekly events that encourage community discussion, celebration, and healing,” said Dodgen.

Seguin Hispanic chamber to host annual awards banquet

(Seguin) -- Tickets are still available for this year’s Seguin-Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. This will mark the 34th year for the presentation of the annual awards. The event is scheduled for this Wednesday night at the Seguin-Guadalupe County Coliseum.

Encouraging folks to get their tickets is Gloria Sasser, a member of the chamber’s board of directors. Sasser says the banquet is vital in applauding those who continue to make a difference in the community.

“This is an our annual awards banquet and these are awarded to businesses and individuals who have contributed to the community,” said Sasser.

Sasser says the chamber has again scheduled a full night of food, fun, and music.

“It’s certainly a good place to network with other business people and also a lovely evening. The Seguin Mariachi Matador will be playing and they

Downtowner, continued.

Owner Tess Coody-Anders says she is appreciative of the honor and describes the past year as incredible.

“It felt like a validation of everything that we’ve been hearing from the community that having a place where books and breaking bread together and coming together was something that people really wanted and I think the recognition was a validation not just for Pecantown but really all of the many people in Seguin who have been so supportive,” said Anders.

Although she had the vision, Anders says it was her work family that put that plan into action.

“We have about 10 employees and some of those folks are seasonal. They work when they are home from college but we have a solid and steady core group that are there everyday and I’m incredibly proud of them. Really, this honor is ours as a group. We are a really well connected and engaged team and everybody that

are always delightful and so they will be performing for us. Food is by Davila’s. So that is always good so I think it’s going to be a really fun and exciting evening and certainly a good time to get out and meet other business people or just meet interesting folks. Come at 6 p.m. That’s our social hour and do some networking,” said Sasser.

Joining the chamber this year in hosting the event will be the TAMACC Education Foundation.

Serving as the guest speaker will be entrepreneur Tatiana Chamorro, owner of Hite Digital, a digital marketing agency.

The event gets underway with a social hour at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Coliseum. Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased at the Hispanic chamber office or at the door. The chamber office is located at 971 W. Court St. The office can also be reached by calling 830-372-3151.

is there is there because they love the mission of what we are doing for downtown and I think that that shows in the way they treat people. It’s a delight everyday to work with the people that I work with,” said Anders.

Anders says the recognition received by the city is also shared with others who together help make businesses in Seguin successful.

“Beyond the employees that we have, we have a network of

other small businesses from which we purchase a lot of the critical goods and services we need to do what we do. So, we feel really blessed to be part of a community where other local businesses are part of our success,” said Anders.

Dodgen on Friday night also helped to recognize this year’s Volunteer of the Year. Dodgen presented this year’s volunteer award to Steve Tschoepe. Downtowner, pg. 2

“Steve has been actively involved with the Seguin Conservation Society for decades, served on Seguin City Council, the Seguin Commission on the Arts, and much more. But what most people probably know Steve for is his dedication at the Texas Theater where he acts as the manager for the theater. Seguin Main Street is proud to present Steve with the Volunteer of the Year Award,” stated Dodgen.

Preserving the beauty of downtown Seguin was also recognized during this year’s Moonlight and Roses event. Dodgen says the preservation of the Mosheim Mansion has been very important making Patricia Saucedo and Greg Schnurr the winners of this year’s award.

“In April of 2021, lightning struck the mansion leading to a devastating fire and the community feared the mansion would sit vacant and unrepaired for years. However, within months of the fire, Patricia and Greg bought the mansion and began the long repair process. They have invested heavily into restoring the mansion and are working to restore historic features like the wood windows, balconies, and more. For protecting and saving the Mosheim Mansion, Main Street is pleased to present Patricia and Greg with the Downtown Beautification Award,” said Dodgen.

Dodgen says the final award of the evening was the Downtowner Partner of the Year. Dodgen says this year’s award was presented to the Seguin

Conservation Society.

“The Conservation Society has been in existence long before the Seguin Main Street Program and have been an active partner to Main Street by preserving several downtown landmarks, hosting community events like the Seguin Birthday Party, and operating the Texas Theater which brings thousands of people to downtown Seguin every year. For always being willing to assist Main Street and being an excellent partner, Seguin Main Street is pleased to name the Conservation Society as its Partner of the Year,” said Dodgen.

Alongside the four annual downtown awards, the city also took the time to recognize Board Chair Anna Moreno for her time on the Main Street Advisory Board. Moreno served on the board from 2017 to 2022 when she was term limited from continuing to serve.

TLU Baseball Completes Sweep of Austin College with Run-Rule

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran launched three home runs on the day and completed the run-rule sweep of Austin College with an eight inning 11-1 win and eight inning 15-5 win on Saturday at Katt-Isbel Field. The run-rule sweep is the first occurrence for the Bulldogs since joining the SCAC.

In game one, Randy Huerta (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) went 3-for-4 with two home runs, scoring three runs as well. Over the course of the five-game week, Huerta hit .353 with two homers, three RBI, two stolen bases and eight runs scored.

Diego Vinton (Richmond/George Ranch) started and pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out five batters and issued two walks.

Brendan Beard (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst) pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the save, his second of the season. He didn’t allow a hit and only issued one walk in his three innings while striking out five batters.

The two teams traded runs early with Niko Garcia (Houston/Langham Creek) driving in Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) with an RBI single before Austin College would respond with a run of their own in the third.

A bases loaded hit by pitch to Alec Sanchez (Waxahachie/Waxahachie) gave TLU a 2-1 lead in the third.

Randy Huerta would hit his first of two solo home runs in the fourth and Holden Philippus (San Antonio/San Antonio Christian) would tack on an RBI single to give TLU a 4-1 lead.

Huerta would leave the ballpark for the second time in his next at-bat, his second solo shot of the day, to lead off the sixth.

The Bulldogs put together a four-run seventh inning to extend their lead to 9-1. Asher Bonnell (Round Rock/Stony Point), Huerta, Blake Cappadona (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill), and Philippus would all drive in runs.

After back-to-back walks to begin the eighth, Payton Dahl (Round Rock/Stony Point) hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Coker Novosad-Wagner (San Antonio/St. Mary’s Hall). Carson Draehn (Brenham/Brenham) would hit a pinch-run RBI single to walk it off for the 11-1 run-rule victory in game one.

Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) finished 2-for-4 wit a homer, three RBI, and two runs scored. Aric Vasquez went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored while Asher Bonnell finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, two stolen bases, and a team-high three runs scored.

Blake Cappadona, who started the game as the Bulldogs’ designated hitter, earned the win in relief - striking out six of his eight batters faced while not allowing a run in 2.1 innings pitched. The Bulldogs pitching staff comprised of Keene Kreusler (New Braunfels/New Braunfels), Cappadona, Riley Backs (Cypress/Cypress Falls), and Zach Longshore (Richmond/Ft. Bend Travis) combined to strike out 17 batters on the evening - matching a season-high for TLU.

Austin College opened game two with a run in the top of the firsttaking advantage of fielding errors from the TLU defense.

Texas Lutheran then scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a Tyler Post two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead. The home run was Post’s SCAC-leading ninth of the season and tied him with TLU Hall of Famer John Krog (2002-05) with his 31st career home run. Texas Lutheran leads the SCAC with 23 home runs on the season.

After a solo home run from Austin College in the top of the second, the Bulldogs scored three more runs in the second inning on an RBI single from Bonnell and a two-RBI single from Cappadona to make the score 5-2.

Austin College tied the game 5-5 after a bases clearing double down the left field line in the top of the third.

TLU got the runs back and then some in fourth with Randy Huerta scoring on an Austin College throwing error ahead of a two-RBI double from Aric Vasquez and an RBI single from Tyler Post to make the score 9-5.

Bonnell drove in another run in the fifth inning to make the score 105. Blade Strzelczyk (San Antonio/East Central) would hit a pinch-hit RBI triple to score Bonnell and give the Bulldogs an 11-5 lead through five.

After going dormant for a few innings, the Bulldogs finished off the game with four more runs in the eighth with a Niko Garcia RBI single, a two-RBI single from Payton Dahl, and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Gates (La Vernia/La Vernia) to walk it off and bring the game to an end with a 15-5 score.

The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs will travel to Irving, Texas, to continue SCAC play on Saturday against Dallas. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM for the first game of a Saturday doubleheader on April 22. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

De La Rosa

Victoria “Vickie” Betancourt De La Rosa, age 75 of Seguin, went on to be with our Heavenly Father on April 13, 2023. Vickie was born on December 19, 1947, in Crystal City, Texas, to Victoria (Perez) and Jose Betancourt-Chavez. She moved to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, at the age of 3 until the age of 15. She traversed two countries in language, customs, traditions, and education and never skipped a beat.

Vickie is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Victoria P. Betancourt, and father, José Betancourt-Chavez.

Vickie De La Rosa was a pillar in the Seguin community and beyond. She leaves a legacy of Faith, Hope, Love, Commitment, Service, and a lifetime of memories for those on earth to cherish, follow, and emulate.

She is survived by her loving and caring husband of 54 years, Homer De La Rosa, her adoring daughters: Christine De La Rosa (Dante Mandala), Dr. Yvonne M. De La Rosa (Sulema J. Silva), Veronica Ann Ramirez (Adam) and her loving Grandchildren: Abraham Jaime Silva, Abram Nathanael Ramirez, Sofia Josephine Ramirez, Isaac Matthias Ramirez, and Joana Victoria Ramirez. Her beloved siblings include Maria Guadalupe Betancourt and José Betancourt. Her very supportive extended family: Tia Consuelo Betancourt, Dr. Guadalupe Gorordo, Juan Luis Martinez (Donna), Yolanda M. Guerra (Alejandro), from Wisconsin - Dora Acosta (Israel), Cristela Mantz (Ron) Xavier Perales, Peter Perales, desde Mexico - Humberto Betancourt (Alejandra), Laura Betancourt (Manuel Gonzalez Duran), Luis Francisco Gonzalez (Mercedes), and Mario Gonzalez (Marita) along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Vickie met the love of her life Homer when they were children while visiting her Grandparents, Dora and Teodulo Perez, in Crystal City, Texas. They grew up together, and when she came to Crystal City High School, they started a beautiful friendship that turned into a relationship. They graduated in 1966, and both attended Southwest Junior College in Uvalde, Texas, and then moved on to Southwest Texas State University, where she graduated in 1970. They had a storybook romance that blossomed and bloomed over the 54 years of marriage.

They raised three daughters, who all made them extremely proud. Christine, Yvonne, and Veronica will pick up the torch bravely and boldly that burned bright for 75 years to ensure the legacy continues. Vickie’s legacy began many generations before she walked her earthly journey. Her ancestors made sure to pour into her all she needed to be a humble Servant of God, a true servant leader, the best wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, colleague, and friend. She knew she was put on this earth to make a difference not only in the lives of her family but as well as the lives of everyone in the Seguin and surrounding communities. She always had an “I CAN” attitude, always a smile on her face, and a very infectious laugh. She did not shy away from doing the heart work, whether it was with Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin (40+ years), Seguin Independent School District (37 years), Texas Lutheran College/University (10+ years), or any other affiliation she had within the community and around the State of Texas. She loved being an educator, whether it was in the arts, in the classroom, at Even Start, as an assistant principal, at SISD Central Office, or on a stage where she could share her love of the Mexican American culture.

Vickie was a loving and adoring Grandma and made sure to fill her grandchildren with all the secrets of love, kindness, humbleness, and

the most important thing banding together as a family. She was there to pick them up from school, go to all their extracurricular activities, make delicious rice and carne picada, fresh tortillas, and even tutored all her grandchildren in mathematics and physics. She shared a special bond with each grandchild and had some of the very best conversations on a oneto-one basis. She imparted into them to keep God in everything they do and to always reach their highest potential.

Vickie was instrumental in the formation of Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin, a non-profit cultural arts organization that is a revered cultural, educational, and humanities institution in Seguin, Texas. Teatro recently celebrated its 40th anniversary of serving Seguin and surrounding communities’ youth, adolescents, adults, and seniors through its three pillars of Community Based, Center Based, and School-Based programming. She touched the lives of thousands. For all 40+ years, Vickie volunteered her services and expertise to Teatro in the following capacities: costume coordinator, Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa instructor, program coordinator, grant writer/administrator, executive director, and dedicated 41 years to serving all who sought knowledge in learning more about the Mexican American culture through all forms of art and humanities. She was instrumental in bringing artists, many programs, and many cultural experiences to the community of Seguin and beyond; this also includes private and public schools and universities. She cultivated the love of teaching in youth who now serve and served in many capacities within Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin throughout the United States and abroad. She was also very instrumental in starting the “Grow Your Own” project within Teatro, which has developed fierce Mexican American arts administrators. She served on many Boards of Directors for various organizations and was often asked by Texas Commission on the Arts to serve as Advisory Review Panelist. She was revered in the arts community throughout Texas and nationally and remained dedicated to the mission of Teatro: To promote a better understanding of the Mexican American culture through the teaching, study, practice, and performance of the arts.

Supreme Court Temporarily Blocks Abortion Pill Restrictions

(Washington, DC) -- The Supreme Court is temporarily blocking restrictions on a commonly used a abortion pill. Justice Samuel Alito blocked lower court rulings that imposed restrictions on the drug. Alito said the hold would remain in effect until midnight on Wednesday. The full court is expected to study the case and decide the next steps by next week. A Texas judge suspended the FDA’s approval of the pill last week.

WH: Florida Abortion Bill Is ‘Extreme and Dangerous’

(Washington, DC) -- The White House is blasting Florida lawmakers for passing a six-week abortion ban. Last week, the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature gave final approval of the bill. It would prohibit abortions after six weeks of pregnancy unless it’s to save a woman’s life or for cases of rape or incest. In a statement, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the bill “extreme and dangerous.” She added that it “flies in the face of fundamental freedoms and is out of step with the views” of most of the people in Florida and the U.S. Governor Ron DeSantis has signed it into law.

Evac Orders Lifted Days After Indiana Plant Fire

(Richmond, IN) -- Evacuation orders put in place days ago for residents affected by a recycling plant fire in Richmond, Indiana have been lifted. The announcement came Sunday following last week’s toxic blaze, which sent thick, black smoke over the area. The mandatory orders had applied to residents within a half mile of the plant. Officials said that air monitors found chemicals such as hydrogen cyanide, benzene, chlorine and carbon monoxide in the ground-level smoke. Work is underway to clear debris scattered in the community.

U.S. Nurses Quitting After Being Hit With COVID Compassion Crisis

(Austin, TX) -- A new report suggests that one-fifth of the nation’s nurses are planning to quit, thanks to COVID burnout. A study by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing found that 100-thousand nurses left the profession during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s not a money issue. They say it’s more like a crisis of compassion. Nursing experts say there needs to be a fundamental change in healthcare so that nurses aren’t bogged down with patients who could be helped by telemedicine.
