Time to make room for Spring

City of Seguin to host free clean-up day this weekend

(Seguin) -- This again is the weekend to tackle that spring cleaning. Helping residents get rid of all their unwanted junk will again be the city of Seguin. The city will be hosting a Spring Clean-Up Day on Saturday in the Seguin Coliseum parking lot.

Jennifer Sourdellia, the city of Seguin public information officer, says all residents have to do is pack up their

trunks, trucks or trailers and bring proof of residency such as a photo ID or utility bill to prove they reside within the city limits.

"This is such a great service for residents that live in our Seguin city limits because this is an opportunity for them to bring unwanted items. Maybe they've cleaned out their garage.

“This event is an opportunity for our students, our families to come out and just kind of have a family fun day. There will be music and games, vendor booths, food truck options as well as free food opportunities,

arts and crafts, and of course, kite flying and of course, we will have opportunities for our students in attendance and our families in attendance to make kites and fly them that day. So, let’s hope there is a little bit of a breeze on Saturday. Again, this event is free and open to the public,” said Hoffmann. Kites, pg. 4

Pregnancy Care Center to host free family activities this Saturday

(Seguin) -- Free family fun is on tap for the second annual Festival for Life. The South Texas Pregnancy Care Center is again gathering families for a fun day celebrating the group’s purpose and future. The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Columbus Club of Seguin Hall.

Extending the invitation to local families is Executive Director Janice Weaver. Weaver says not only do they want families to come out and celebrate but they want to make sure that the community knows exactly why they exist.

“We are a pro-life organization. We believe that all babies are made in the image of God and all creations and there are people who believe that maybe life doesn’t start until later on in a pregnancy or when that child is born and if you are on the other side of the fence, I encourage you to come because we are going to have a lot of information about what we do and what our goals are. Our goal is to help a young woman who might have an unplanned pregnancy to see how she could parent, how she could choose an adoption plan if she doesn’t think she can take care of the child herself but that we believe all children are a blessing and we have programs in place that would help a young family with everything they need to have

that child to education and then also the materials things. We have a baby boutique that we can supply a whole nursery and outfit that child with clothes and things until they are about two. We carry things up to 24 months in our baby boutique,” said Weaver.

The non-profit organization launched the Festival for Life last year in hopes of preparing the community for its future building to be built on East Kingsbury Street. Weaver says not only do they want the community to see the new building but the group wanted to make sure that folks always felt welcome. The result, she says, was to provide a day of fun.

Sign-up still available for 5K along the Guadalupe River

(Seguin) -- Get ready to walk or run along the river during this weekend's first ever Seguin River Run/Walk 5K.

The event is being hosted this Saturday by members of Life Bridge, an adult Sunday school group at Faith Lutheran Church. Coordinator Cody Goetz says the group has been wanting to host an outreach effort that immediately impacts the local community.

"We chose the Seguin Christian Cupboard and within that, we are looking to provide a monetary donation through raising funds in the 5K that we are putting on this weekend. We've also opened up an opportunity for those to bring cereal boxes which is their item in demand for this month to our pre-packet pickup at the church this Friday as

well as at the registration event on the morning of the 5K," said Goetz.

Although competitive, Goetz says the 5K is designed for folks of all activity levels.

"The race is chip timed. It's put on by Athletic Guild which is a company that we using out of New Braunfels. As far as the participants go, we are able to have all age groups, no young, too small -- We have some discounts if you are 18 or younger. It is a walk and a run so we will be handing out

Goetz says individuals and businesses have all shown their support. Plus, he says the group is already beginning to plan for next year.

"We are super excited to give back to our community. We are hoping to grow this event in years to come. We've had nothing but support from the local community. We just want to say thanks. Entries still being accepted for Sounds of Seguin Car Show

Matador Band Booster Club to host annual fundraiser

(Seguin) – The Seguin Matador Band is inviting car show enthusiasts to toot their own horns at this year’s second annual Sounds of Seguin Car Show. The car show is slated for Saturday in the Seguin High School parking lot.

Band Booster President Jill Nash says the open show welcomes a variety of entries with many awards available.

"Anything is open and welcome and this year, we are going to feature the same type of awards that we did last year and what is unique about those is they are presented and built on drumheads. Those drumheads are played by the high school percussion during the year and so, it's a very unique prize in that it is one of a kind that you are not going to get anywhere," said Nash.

Nash adds that not only is this car show unique, but is centered around community judging.

"We will have a Fan Favorite for the community to vote -- Kids Choice for the little kids. We will have three first, second and third place for Driver's Choice and then we will have our Senior Class of 2023 and then our percussion group will have a choice, our color guard group and then our winds group will have a choice in selecting," said Nash. "These folks are here to support the band and so we wanted to give the community and the band kids an opportunity to participate."

Clean-up, continued.

Maybe they were cleaning out their houses and they want to get rid of some things but they simply just don't know where to take them. It's just a perfect opportunity for them to bring these items to our Spring Clean-Up Day which is free," said Sourdellia. "All you have to do is simply load up all your items that you want to get rid of. Put them in the back of your truck. You can put them on the back of a trailer, load it up, bring it to the Seguin Coliseum. We will have volunteers there removing all these items, putting them in trash bins, getting rid of these things and items and disposing of them properly for you."

Among the accepted items include junk disposal including mattresses, scrap metal, appliances without Freon and a maximum of 10 automobile tires no larger than 19.5 inches.

Now while most items will be accepted, there are a few items that Sourdellia says will not be collected.

"Some of these things are hazardous materials and chemicals so if you've got cleaning supplies at your house, pesticides, we don't take any of those type of materials. We also do not accept brush and limbs because those items can be picked up from your homes by our trash service. We do not take any sort of construction material or debris, no fences, no sheds and no appliances with Freon. We also do not accept any tractor trailer, lawn mower, bicycle or ATV tires and we do not take tires from local businesses," said Sourdellia.

Other items that will not be accepted include computer monitors or TVs.

Paper shredding, however, will be available. Residents are limited to two bags or two boxes filled with paper documents.

The event will be held on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. The Coliseum is located at 950 S. Austin St. Those with questions are encouraged to call the public works department at 830-4012416.

Family, continued.

“We are going to have a rock climbing wall and a photo booth where you can take free photos and then we have bouncy castles and a dunking booth. We are going to be dunking several of the local pastors so an opportunity to let them get wet. We are going to be selling a hamburger meal. The Knights of Columbus are cooking for us so we are

going to have hamburgers with all the trimmings and even a homemade cookie that goes with it and chips and a drink for $10. Then, we are going to have a dessert auction to raise some money for our center and for our new building and (Commissioner)

Greg Seidenberger is going to be our auctioneer and that’s going to start at 2:15 in the afternoon,” said Weaver.

Actual construction for

the new building is slated to begin this coming week. The construction timeline is estimated to be 10 months. The pregnancy care center is currently located at 975 W. Court St.

Other than the hamburger meal, there is no cost to attend the Festival for Life. The Columbus Club of Seguin Hall is located at 1025 S. Austin St.

De La Rosa

Victoria “Vickie” Betancourt De La Rosa, age 75 of Seguin, went on to be with our Heavenly Father on April 13, 2023. Vickie was born on December 19, 1947, in Crystal City, Texas, to Victoria (Perez) and Jose Betancourt-Chavez. She moved to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, at the age of 3 until the age of 15. She traversed two countries in language, customs, traditions, and education and never skipped a beat.

Vickie is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Victoria P. Betancourt, and father, José Betancourt-Chavez.

Vickie De La Rosa was a pillar in the Seguin community and beyond. She leaves a legacy of Faith, Hope, Love, Commitment, Service, and a lifetime of memories for those on earth to cherish, follow, and emulate.

She is survived by her loving and caring husband of 54 years, Homer De La Rosa, her adoring daughters: Christine De La Rosa (Dante Mandala), Dr. Yvonne M. De La Rosa (Sulema J. Silva), Veronica Ann Ramirez (Adam) and her loving Grandchildren: Abraham Jaime Silva, Abram Nathanael Ramirez, Sofia Josephine Ramirez, Isaac Matthias Ramirez, and Joana Victoria Ramirez. Her beloved siblings include Maria Guadalupe Betancourt and José Betancourt. Her very supportive extended family: Tia Consuelo Betancourt, Dr. Guadalupe Gorordo, Juan Luis Martinez (Donna), Yolanda M. Guerra (Alejandro), from Wisconsin - Dora Acosta (Israel), Cristela Mantz (Ron) Xavier Perales, Peter Perales, desde Mexico - Humberto Betancourt (Alejandra), Laura Betancourt (Manuel Gonzalez Duran), Luis Francisco Gonzalez (Mercedes), and Mario Gonzalez (Marita) along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Vickie met the love of her life Homer when they were children while visiting her Grandparents, Dora and Teodulo Perez, in Crystal City, Texas. They grew up together, and when she came to Crystal City High School, they started a beautiful friendship that turned into a relationship. They graduated in 1966, and both attended Southwest Junior College in Uvalde, Texas, and then moved on to Southwest Texas State University, where she graduated in 1970. They had a storybook romance that blossomed and bloomed over the 54 years of marriage.

They raised three daughters, who all made them extremely proud. Christine, Yvonne, and Veronica will pick up the torch bravely and boldly that burned bright for 75 years to ensure the legacy continues. Vickie’s legacy began many generations before she walked her earthly journey. Her ancestors made sure to pour into her all she needed to be a humble Servant of God, a true servant leader, the best wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, colleague, and friend. She knew she was put on this earth to make a difference not only in the lives of her family but as well as the lives of everyone in the Seguin and surrounding communities. She always had an “I CAN” attitude, always a smile on her face, and a very infectious laugh. She did not shy away from doing the heart work, whether it was with Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin (40+ years), Seguin Independent School District (37 years), Texas Lutheran College/University (10+ years), or any other affiliation she had within the community and around the State of Texas. She loved being an educator, whether it was in the arts, in the classroom, at Even Start, as an assistant principal, at SISD Central Office, or on a stage where she could share her love of the Mexican American culture.

Vickie was a loving and adoring Grandma and made sure to fill her grandchildren with all the secrets of love, kindness, humbleness, and

the most important thing banding together as a family. She was there to pick them up from school, go to all their extracurricular activities, make delicious rice and carne picada, fresh tortillas, and even tutored all her grandchildren in mathematics and physics. She shared a special bond with each grandchild and had some of the very best conversations on a oneto-one basis. She imparted into them to keep God in everything they do and to always reach their highest potential.

Vickie was instrumental in the formation of Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin, a non-profit cultural arts organization that is a revered cultural, educational, and humanities institution in Seguin, Texas. Teatro recently celebrated its 40th anniversary of serving Seguin and surrounding communities’ youth, adolescents, adults, and seniors through its three pillars of Community Based, Center Based, and School-Based programming. She touched the lives of thousands. For all 40+ years, Vickie volunteered her services and expertise to Teatro in the following capacities: costume coordinator, Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa instructor, program coordinator, grant writer/administrator, executive director, and dedicated 41 years to serving all who sought knowledge in learning more about the Mexican American culture through all forms of art and humanities. She was instrumental in bringing artists, many programs, and many cultural experiences to the community of Seguin and beyond; this also includes private and public schools and universities. She cultivated the love of teaching in youth who now serve and served in many capacities within Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin throughout the United States and abroad. She was also very instrumental in starting the “Grow Your Own” project within Teatro, which has developed fierce Mexican American arts administrators. She served on many Boards of Directors for various organizations and was often asked by Texas Commission on the Arts to serve as Advisory Review Panelist. She was revered in the arts community throughout Texas and nationally and remained dedicated to the mission of Teatro: To promote a better understanding of the Mexican American culture through the teaching, study, practice, and performance of the arts.

As for her younger siblings, she became the rock to them by helping raise them and providing unconditional love and support. As a teenager, Dora loved to sing country music with her best friend Joyce Schultz, with whom she maintained a lifelong friendship.

After the death of her daughter in 1978, she met Kenneth Evans in February 1980. They married on September 8, 1980 in Seguin, Texas. He brought to the marriage Kent and Rose Evans. Together they adopted a wonderful son, Audie Matheus.

Professionally, Dora held many titles. She was a licensed hair stylist for 20 years, the Editor of the San Saba News, and a business co-owner. Her traveling adventures always included funny stories to share such as pulling up to the Waldorf Astoria in

New York City pulling a U-Haul trailer. She loved singing gospel music to praise God and loved being a member of the Kingsbury Baptist Church where she made many dear friends. In her spare time, she was known to gather up the family to play Double 12 dominoes or her favorite card game 313. She also organized and planned the Alexander family reunion every year on Father’s Day weekend, so that the 100+ year tradition continued.

Dora was the most independent, courageous, strong, and loving person that anyone would ever meet. She had a beautiful smile and the presence of love that would energize any room she entered. Supreme Court Extends Access To Abortion Pill

(Washington, DC) -- The Supreme Court is extending access to an abortion pill, at least until this Friday. Earlier this month, a Texas federal judge ruled production and distribution of the widely-used drug be halted nationwide, citing alleged FDA approval problems. Last week, the Supreme Court put the judge’s ruling on hold as they decide whether to allow full access to mifepristone [[mif-uh PRIS tone ]] while the case is appealed. The court’s stay indicates it needs more time to study the case and decide the next steps.

Biden Administration To Keep COVID Shots Free For Uninsured
