KWED/SDN creates first ever community Non-Profit Guidebook

New community resource guide now available for people seeking service, support for local non-profits

(Seguin) -- Local non-profit groups are getting another assist in their efforts to better connect with the community. The inaugural Non-Profit Expo was held Wednesday night in the Seguin Coliseum. And today, the first ever SeguinGuadalupe County Non-Profit Guidebook officially becomes available to the community.

The guidebook was put together by KWED and the Seguin Daily News. General Manager Darren Dunn says this is a new resource for the entire community.

“This nonprofit guidebook is a way for the community to understand exactly what’s available here locally. There are so many charitable organizations that are doing

such fine work that really provide crisis services -- they provide services to enhance the quality of life and really try to fulfill the needs of the people in this community and so we needed a resource. It wasn’t available. We needed a resource that would allow people to get connected to those services and also a resource that would allow people to find volunteer opportunities so that they can show more love and support to some of these organizations,” said Dunn. “It’s no accident that the guidebook was released in time for Wednesday’s Non-Profit Expo, hosted by the Guadalupe County Fair Association.

Saturday morning radio program to discuss Navarro ISD bond issue

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Geronimo) -- KWED radio listeners in the Navarro ISD will want to tune in Saturday for a list of the facts behind the district's proposed $120 million bond election.

Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley has been invited to join the radio program to layout the items found on the Saturday May 4 ballot.

As reported, there are three propositions that make up the bond package. Proposition A has a total of $73.7 million and includes the construction of a new elementary school. Proposition B calls for $35.5 million to be spent on a new athletic stadium and field house. Proposition C calls for expenditures of $10.8 million for new baseball and softball turf fields, tennis courts, restrooms, and concessions.

Everybody is excited to get it and get a big portion of that. You get those special potatoes that only Troy Brown and Next Door Catering know how to cook that way. Get some green beans and I don't even like green beans and I love their green beans. They are just so good. You get all that for $15. We will have a limited number of plates for sale at the door for $20. But again, we encourage people to buy the plates ahead of time. It helps us plan and it makes sure that nobody is disappointed to come down and find out that we sold out," said Klingemann. Lions, pg. 5

TLU invites Seguin to unveiling of campus mural

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The Seguin community is invited to join Texas Lutheran University this Friday morning as it unveils a cultural bridge between them.

Local artist/muralist Danielle Villareal, in collaboration with TLU art students and the Center for Mexican American Studies, will be using her paintbrush to bring color and life to the south wall of TLU’s Schuech Fine Arts Center. The mural will be visible from the Langner Hall parking lot.

TLU officials say the resulting mural will constitute as the first permanent art installation

in the university’s history -- representing the TLU Mexican American community, which currently makes up just under half the student body.

“We’re excited to add a visual representation that underscores the importance of the connections between TLU and Seguin, celebrating our shared history, diversity, and partnership,” said TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell. “I know that this mural will provide yet another way that our Hispanic Serving Institution status is brought to life on our campus.”

TLU to say goodbye to The Golden Guys

Three longtime greats set to retire

(Seguin) -- They say all good things must come to an end-but sometimes endings bring new beginnings, and as one chapter closes, another opens and the story goes on. For three outstanding, longtime faculty members, the stories will most definitely go on, and in their wake, they're leaving quite a legacy behind. Still, one wonders what these three-Dr. Norman Beck, Dr. Robert Jonas, and Dr. Eric Daub- will remember most as they look back over their years at TLU-and what wisdom they have to bestow from all they've learned along the way.

Beck, Lutheran pastor and professor of Theology and Classical Languages, is capping off an amazing 49-year tenure at TLU, having arrived on campus in January of 1975. When perusing his decades of Bulldog memories, he fondly recalls the 1975-76 football season, when legendary head coach Jim Wacker led the Bulldogs to the NAIA Division II Football National Championship-for the second year in a row.

Beck is preparing to deliver his final lecture before entering a well-earned retirement. The lecture will be followed by a reception, providing an opportunity for friends, colleagues, and former students to share stories and express gratitude to a beloved member of our community. The event will take place on Saturday, April 27 at 2 p.m. in TLU's Chapel of Abiding Presence.

Jonas, professor of Biology, showed up on campus a good many years after Beck, in 1991. That brings his

TLU run to 33 years. His best memory from that time? Turns out he's got too many to count, but he says, “It's always great to see how former students are doing!”

Daub, director of Piano Studies and Music Theory at TLU's School of Music, is an accomplished pianist covering everything from jazz to blues to rock. He started his TLU days in August of 1994. He says he'll always remember when, at the beginning of one spring semester, his music theory students presented him with what they called The Box of Shame. “They had apparently written down quotes from the past several years of lectures all over the outside of the boxlighthearted admonitions about music theory and being more responsible about studying and taking notes,” he explains. “They wanted me to put a student in the Box of Shame when they weren't measuring up to expectations, and were very disappointed when I refused to do so.” Daub says the Box of Shame sat in the classroom through that entire semester. “I guess it was recycled over the following summer. I wish that I would have kept it.”

Considering how long these three-these golden guys who've walked alongside generations of TLU studentshave been on campus, one wonders what advice they might offer to their younger and less experienced selves if they could go all the way back to the beginning.

“l would advise myself to audit Spanish language courses to gain a reading and speaking knowledge of the Spanish language.” That's Norm Beck's take. Bob Jonas, on the other hand, feels like he actually did receive a nugget of wisdom, right from the start: “Don't lower your standards.”

Dunn says they wanted to brighten the spotlight that was being shined on charities that are working hard each day to take care of this community.”

It’s no accident that the guidebook was released in time for Wednesday’s Non-Profit Expo, hosted by the Guadalupe County Fair Association. Dunn says they wanted to brighten the spotlight that was being shined on charities that are working hard each day to take care of this community.

“I want to tip my hat to Gail Damerau from the fair association board of directors. She was the guiding force to help the fair association come up with this idea for the nonprofit expo that was held on Wednesday night. But that expo really opened up an opportunity for us to all be better connected to some of these organizations that are doing the hardwork each and every day. We count on these organizations to provide these services to the people in this community. We count on them to be there when there is a need in this community and they are stepping up all the time to do that. So, this was just a better way for us to say we see what is happening with the nonprofit expo, how can we better enhance that to make more people aware about this important

work that is being done and also to help them to understand how we can have a lasting impact on that work. You can volunteer. You can give. You can leave donations that exist even after you are gone so this nonprofit guide book hopefully helps to shine a bigger spotlight on all of those efforts,” said Dunn.

Dunn says a lot of hard work went into the

Non-Profit Guidebook, but he says it was a labor of love. He says it’s another way for the radio station to help keep the community informed and connected.

“KWED exist for one reason and that is to work in service to this community. We want people to know what’s happening in this town. We want people to know that there are neighbors helping neighbors. We want people to know that there are charities that exist within this community and even some outside of this community that bring their services and attention to Seguin and Guadalupe County. You need to know what is out there because when help is needed, we want to make sure you are able to get exactly what you need in those situations. We want to make sure that if you are in a crisis, there is support for you. We want you to know that if you are looking to improve the quality of life, there are plenty of organizations that are working to do that as well. This is just another way for us to make sure we are taking care of this community in the best way possible,” said Dunn.

The 2024 Seguin-Guadalupe County NonProfit Guidebook can be picked up here at KWED, located at 609 E. Court St. in Seguin. They can also be obtained from non-profit groups all over town, or you can access digital copies of the community resource by visiting seguintoday.com.

Just as important is the club's annual raffle. Klingemann says this year's raffle features 12 great prizes.

"We do have the raffle and it kind of ties into the pork steak because the top prize on that raffle is, in fact, a catered dinner for 50 people donated by Next Door Catering so if you love pork steaks, you can really get together with you and your friends and have a really nice catered dinner. (Fellow Lion) Pat Sagebiel says some people say they don't have 50 friends but if you win the prize, you will have 50 friends. It's not going to be a problem. This advice came from the late Dr. Deb Hettinger, biology professor. And what about Daub? “I would say to myself, 'Relax, enjoy, and know that you are in a great place working with great people.'” Good advice for all of us.

And as to the students-the up-and-coming leaders in our midst-the three have some simple words of advice for them as well. “Attend all classes if possible, participate in class discussions, take good notes, study your notes daily so that you will not need to cram for exams, and complete all assignment before the due dates,” says Beck. Jonas advises, “You have time, don't rush your life. I started my PhD program when I was 28.” And Daub points out that “TLU is a place where

The Navarro ISD bond election is just one of a handful of races that will appear on the May 4 ballot. Early voting in those races continues today and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and again on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Early voting will also be held Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Early voting locations include the Seguin Elections Office, the Central Texas Technology Center, Redemptive Grace Ministries, the Schertz Community Center, Selma City Hall and the New Berlin City Hall.

We also have a $100 gift certificate from St. James and $100 gift certificate from Pat and Charles Villeneuve; Dietz Flowers contributed a $50 gift certificate and of course, a one hour massage donated by Janet Ignasiak, licensed massage therapist," said Klingemann.

Raffle tickets are 15 for $10. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Silver Center; Starcke Furniture, Ascot's Custom Travel or at Tri County AC and Heating. They can also be purchased from any Lions Club member.

you can learn the skills, discipline, and joy that is essential for your future professional lives. If you aren't sure about what you want to do with your life, we will help you discover your purpose!”

Having seen so many groups of students come and go through the years, how, you might wonder, do the three feel about this current generation? Well let's just say the future is looking bright from where they're standing. “This generation of TLU students welcomes diversity and includes rather than excludes a variety of viewpoints in Theology and in life,” says Beck. Jonas adds that, “Our students are compassionate, they respect each other and everyone's uniqueness.” And Daub concurs. “Our students are all really kind and generous people who care deeply about equality, justice, and inclusiveness.”

So as they close this chapter and move on to the next, what's in store? Beck will continue to be actively involved in TLU activities and in the lives of his family-so don't fret: you'll still see him around campus. Jonas is looking forward to doing some traveling and fishing, and he's considering taking up the guitar. And Daub, who's been commuting in from North Austin, looks forward to leaving rush hour behind. He'll be working on numerous musical projects on his piano and keyboards and enjoying travelling with his wife.

Consider this: between the three of them, Beck, Jonas, and Daub have given 112 years to TLU. Who knows how many classes they've taught or lives they've changed-or what their students would say, were they all gathered together in one group. But one thing is sure: that group would jump to

Women Treated By Women Doctors Less Likely To Die (Undated) -- Women in the hospital are less likely to die if they’re treated by female doctors. That’s according to a new study that also found they were less likely to be readmitted to the hospital. The study, published Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, found that among women 65 and older, eight-point-15 percent treated by women died within 30 days, compared with eight-point-38 percent treated by males. Getting rid of that gap could save five-thousand lives a year. There’s no clear reason for the gap in this study, but other studies suggest it could be attributed to miscommunication and bias.

Over Abortion Restrictions (Tampa, FL) -- President Biden uses a Tampa campaign rally as a backdrop to talk about reproductive and abortion rights. Biden said state abortion laws have caused “pain and cruelty.” He called the sixweek abortion ban “bizarre” and said it criminalizes reproductive health care before women even know if they’re pregnant. Biden put the blame on Donald Trump, saying Trump has repeatedly taken credit for appointing the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.
