WEEKEND EDITION

Race to Raise 5K set to start on lawn of local bookstore

Sign-up still available for annual event

(Seguin) -- Sign-up is still available for this year’s 10th annual Race to Raise 5K Run and Walk hosted by the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation. Executive Director Elaine Bennett says not only is the group excited about hosting the start and finish lines at Pecantown Books & Brews but it is also excited about welcoming one of its largest groups of participants.

“Our numbers are coming back from COVID which I think every race has suffered through that but last year, we had 149 runners and this year, we are over 200 that are registered. So, everything is going back to the pre-COVID and we are excited about that and if people still want to register, it’s not too late. You just

go to athleteguild.com,” said Bennett.

The 5K will lead participants throughout the heart of the city with the route traveling through the Glen Cove subdivision. Bennett says runners and walkers will then return to Pecantown for a morning of food and music.

“Something that is super unique about our Flapjack Jamboree is we do have one of our members Ed Engelhardt. He’s been in the Kiwanis Club for over 50 years. He’s been flipping pancakes and sausages for over 50 years. So, it’s all of us coming together and just waking up at 5 a.m. to be out there to actually give out that meal and prepare it ourselves,” said Dasher.

Dasher says what makes it even more special is that breakfast is served hot off the griddle and is delivered straight into your vehicle.

“It will start at 6 a.m. It’s a drive-thru service. We will have two drive-thrus that will be operating and the plate is $10. You get two big pancakes, two sausages, and then your choice of orange juice or water. We will also have the Navarro Jazz Band out there performing so people are more than welcome to pull up their car, take a seat, and listen to that while they eat,” said Dasher.

In addition to its pancake breakfast, Dasher says folks will also get the chance to snag one of the great prizes in this year’s raffle.

“Our first raffle item is from Lions Den (Art) Collective. Tattoo artist Jeremiah Camacho has gifted us a $150 gift card for a tattoo. We have another raffle item that was sponsored by the Burnt Bean and the Sweet Spot. It’s a $100 gift card to Burnt Bean and then $50 to the Sweet Spot and they are collected at The Backyard. Our third raffle item was donated by Healing Hands Chiropractic. It is a Michael Kors crossbody bag. Our fourth item is a Blackstone grill. I believe it’s a 20-inch griddle to cook up on and the accessories for it and then our last item is sponsored by the Law Office of Ruben James Reyes and Oehlke CPA, it is a 60-inch TV and sound bar,” said Dasher.

The breakfast meal will be served until 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Raffle or Flapjack tickets can be purchased from any club member or on the morning of the event. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Winners will be drawn on Facebook Live immediately following the event. The First Methodist Church is located at 710 N. Austin St.

5K, continued.

“We are going to have Whataburger there for the finishers along with CY distillery providing pickle shots and Pecantown Books and Brews will be providing a token to choose whatever beverage you would like at their business and we are also going to have a live band called Texas Thorns and if you’ve ever been in our rehab department and you’ve been under the care of Jim Abbott well this is his band and so we are super excited to have a live band and have one of our employees participate in providing his band so super excited about that,” said Bennett.

The event is open to both adults and children. Registration on Friday is $45 for adults and $50 on the day of the race. Registration for children is $25.

Bennett says proceeds will go toward the purchase of equipment and materials that enhance and advance the overall patient care experience at the local hospital. Plus, a portion of those proceeds will be designated to the foundation’s general endowment fund.

“Life Saver Grants are pieces of equipment or software that are unbudgeted items that come from department manager needs and it ranges anywhere from a CPR machine to blanket warmers, dolls for our SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) Department -- it just really varies and we get our ideas from the department managers. Anything that they are writing for, it will advance or enhance patient care at GRMC,” said Bennett.

Also helping to make these life-saver grants possible are the many generous donors that Bennett says have helped in hosting this event. Those unable to attend the 5K but who would still like to support the foundation are encouraged to become a “Sleep In” supporter for just $35. Those wishing to give are asked to contact the foundation at 830-401-1385 or email foundatoin@grmedcenter.com.

The 5K run/walk gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Pecantown. The business is located at 212 S. Camp St.

"It's just a really neat program to do. You get to learn a lot about what's in Seguin and what's happening. You see places that you might have seen like just driving around Seguin and you've always wondered what it is and you end up going to it and finding what it is about and finding out a lot about Seguin," said Vickers.

SAYLA President Maria Castilleja is also encouraging those who have their applications ready to go to also not forget about Monday's deadline.

"I think most of the students these days, right now it's STAAR. Their head is there. I get it. This is a great opportunity throughout the summer for a week to quote-unquote get rid of your kids, to get them off the couches and give them some leadership skills. So, the urgency of 'hey, let's turn these applications in -- they are probably in your desk, backpack crumbled up -- I can iron them out. Let's get them in," said Castilleja.

The invitation to join the experience is open to any junior or senior student in Guadalupe County. A link to the application can be found on the chamber's Facebook page. Those interested may also contact the chamber at 830-3796382. The deadline for those applications is 5 p.m. Monday.

Sandra (Sandi) Ann Leibenguth Lankford was one of the most beautiful, strong loving and caring persons anyone would ever want to know. She was loved and cherished by a large number of family and friends.

Sandi passed away peacefully after years of suffering with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis on the 21st day of April, 2023, in the 77” year of her age. Her lovinghusband Roy was with her until her final breath.

“A Soul prepared needs no delays

The Summons comes the Saint obeys Swift was her flight, and short the road She closed her eyes and saw her God.”

Sandi was born on September 10, 1945, in Lehighton, Pennsylvania. She was the first of two children born to her parents, Foster John Leibenguth and Fern Elizabeth Wertman Leibenguth. Her parents divorced in about 1952 and Fern later married Frank Derrill Banks who Sandi always considered her Dad. Fern and Derrill then had two additional children to add to the family. Derrill was in the Air Force, so the family moved around. They were stationed in Illinois where Sandi graduated from Mascoutah High School, in 1963. They were later stationed in Washington DC where Sandi began her Civil Service career. The family finally all moved to San Antonio, where she continued her career at Lackland AFB as a Clerk Typist Supervisor.

After meeting at The Golden Stallion Dance Hall in San Antonio in May of 1971, Roy and Sandi were married by Reverend Harold Zirkel at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on February 18, 1972, and then honeymooned in Cloudcroft, NM. From the beginning to the end, Roy called Sandi “Babe” and Sandi calledRoy “Babe”.

Sandi continued to work for 10 years at Lackland AFB until she eventually had to retire due to medical reasons in 1975. At this time, she began taking college classes at SAC to increase her knowledge and education. In 1979, Sandi and Roy moved to Seguin where they built a little house, started a farm and Roy began working for Motorola. At this point, she volunteered for 20 years with her favorite cohort, Dorine Volmer as a Pink Lady and Front Desk Receptionist for Guadalupe Valley Hospital. They had a lot of fun together. After the hospital, Sandi took painting lessons before she started taking Tai Chi lessons. She eventually earned a teaching certificate and began teaching Tai Chi at the Guadalupe Reginal Wellness Center until she was physically incapable of the strain of teaching. Even then she continued with her love of Tai Chi until Covid shut things down. After teaching Tai Chi, Sandi decided she needed something to do in her spare time,

so she started taking Guitar lessons at Dellview Music Center in San Antonio. She took Dobro and Electric Lap Steel Guitar lessons from Don Pack and Denny Mathis for many years loving every minute and every note of music. That was one of her favorite experiences. She loved music. What a wonderful time she had there making music and meeting the local legends of country music.

Roy and Sandi both loved to travel and camp in their earlier years. They camped in many of the national and state parks in Texas, Wyoming, California, Montana, Colorado, Utah and South Dakota. Their favorite place to camp was always Big Bend, just barely ahead of Yellowstone. Then in 1999, they bought their first travel trailer and began going to state parks around Texas and once to Yellowstone. In the trailer, their favorite place to go was Goose Island State Park to meet their buddies, Don and Gayle Pack, drop a line in the water and drink some wine. Besides camping, they were able to travel to Germany, France twice, England, Scotland, and Canada three times and Puerto Rico as well as two cruises to Alaska. In addition to the camping and travels, they were able to attend numerous music concerts including; ZZ Top, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, the Platters, Fleetwood Mac, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, Hayes Carll, Albert Collins and many other groups and performers around Texas.

Sandi and Roy never had children, so Sandi poured her love and time into her animals. Her beloved horses Cajun Queen and Ole Blue: all of her dogs and cats, and hundreds of cows and calves who each had a name. Sandi loved everybody, some not as much as others, but she did love everybody and she loved every animal too. There was never a dog she didn’t want to pet or a horse that didn’t get a nose rub.

Sandi is preceded in death by her father Foster Leibenguth, her mother Fern Banks, her step-father Derrill Banks and her brother Randy Banks. She is survived by her husband of 51 years Roy J. Lankford of Seguin, TX, her sister Gail Hilfiker of La Vernia, TX, her sister Patricia Walden of Windsor, MO and numerous nieces and one nephew.

Serving as pallbearers will be Glenn Targac, Dale Muenzler, Kris Gulleen, Dan Lankford, Ernest Forman and Kenneth Gold.

A visitation will be held Friday, April 28, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Funeral service will follow to celebrate Sandra’s life Friday, April 28, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Cathe Evins officiating at Tres Hewell Mortuary. A private graveside interment of Sandi’s ashes will be in the Lankford/Pritchard plot at the Jones Cemetery in Utopia, TX at a later date.

WHO Warns Of Biological Risk After Sudanese Group Occupies Public Health Lab

(Sudan) -- The World Health Organization is warning of a biological risk after a group in Sudan occupied a public health laboratory in the capital Khartoum. That comes just after the U.S. announced a three-day ceasefire that was supposed to begin last night. The WHO’s representative in Sudan called the occupation “extremely dangerous” because of the polio, measles, and cholera isolates in the lab. It’s yet unknown which side has taken over the lab.

Wisconsin Republican Members Of Congress Worried About UW-Madison Lab Exposures

(Washington, D.C.) -- Wisconsin’s Republican members of Congress want answers about two, years-old reported lab leaks at UWMadison. Congressman Bryan Stiel, along with U.S. Senator Ron Johnson and other Republicans this week sent a letter to HHS, the NIH, and the CDC asking for details about reported exposures to a genetically modified form of the H5N1 virus. One happened back in 2013, and the other happened in 2019. Gallagher and the others say it appears the Department of Health and Human Services played a role in funding gain-of-function research on the virus, and therefore needs to be open and honest about the safety of that research. A recent USA Today story says despite the possible exposures at the UW-Madison lab, full reports weren’t passed along until two months later.

Haley: Nation Needs To Find Consensus On Abortion

(Arlington, VA) -- Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley says the nation needs to come to a consensus on abortion. While speaking yesterday in Arlington, Virginia, the former South Carolina governor said she’s unapologetically pro-life, but conceded that restrictive abortion laws recently enacted by some Republican states would never pass at a national level. She said no Republican president will have the ability to ban abortion nationwide, but added that pro-life lawmakers can still “save as many lives as possible.”

KC Mayor Wants To Join ACLU Suit

(Kansas City, MO) -- Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas is reviewing how the city can join the Missouri ACLU’s lawsuit seeking to prevent Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey’s restrictions on transgender health care. The attorney general’s regulation requires those who seek gender-affirming medical treatments to have experienced an intense pattern of gender dysphoria for at least three years and to undergo at least 18 months of therapy before receiving treatment. Those who are currently involved in the lawsuit say Bailey has no authority to use a consumer protection law to create emergency transgender health care rules.
