Voters head to the polls this Saturday
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) - Voters will be hitting the polls this weekend. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday for the May 4th Election.
Lisa Hayes, the Guadalupe County elections administrator, says it’s important that voters know exactly what elections are being held.
“I just want to remind
voters that election is a Saturday for this election. That often catches voters unaware because they get used to doing the Tuesday voting like we do in the primary runoff and the November election so election day is Saturday for this May’s cities and schools election. It is not the primary runoff,” said Hayes.

Cinco de Mayo celebration to hit the streets this weekend
Special by Myra Salinas, Main Street and CVB tourism assistant(Seguin) -- Seguin and communities from all over the United States and Mexico will be hosting celebrations in honor of Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the 1862 triumph of Mexican forces in the Battle of Puebla. The outnumbered Mexicans were led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, who defeated a significantly larger French force. Zaragoza was born in what is now Goliad, Texas to Miguel G. Zaragoza and María de Jesús Seguín, who was cousins with our very own Juan Seguin.
The 15th Annual Cinco de Mayo Pachanga hosted by the LULAC Council 682 highlights the food, dance, music, performance art and cultural references of the Mexican-American experience. From performers to games and activities, the organization celebrates our shared artistic heritage with the community and expose the next generation to their cultural inheritance.
The weekend event has a great line up of entertainment starting on Friday at 7:00 p.m. through midnight with Gacho Sol, Clint Taft, and Conjunto Cats. Music will continue on Saturday starting at 7 p.m. through midnight with Lucha Libre, Undercover Killers, Wheels of Steel, and Tiffany Dawn.
Along with the live music, vendors and more will be available from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and from noon to midnight on Saturday.
Visitors can shop the local vendors and taste the delicious festival food available in Central Park. On
Saturday, three new events have been added to the fun; the events include live Lucha Libre at 1:30, a concha eating competition and a chancla throwing competition.
"We encourage the community to come out and support what we hope will be the largest and best Cinco de Mayo Pachanga we've ever hosted, especially because it's all about raising money to fund scholarships distributed by LULAC Council 682" said Felix Moreno, President of LULAC Council 682.
"Most people celebrate Cinco de Mayo without realizing that Texas, and especially Seguin have a connection to the historic Battle of Puebla, and over time we hope to change that," said Eli Guerrero, vice president of LULAC Council 682.
For more information on this event, contact Felix Moreno, LULAC Council 682 at 830-865-8212.
Tickets available for Wilson Pottery
Free pottery show slated for Saturday at TLU
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera(Seguin) -- Seguin and Guadalupe County are invited to spend part of their weekend with the Hiram Wilson and James Wilson clan. The descendants of the men will gather for another tribute to the men's legacy as the first black entrepreneurs in the state of Texas. Freed from slavery by emancipation, the pair of brothers took the skills of their former master and founded the Wilson Potteries company in Capote, a small community south of Seguin. Today, their legacy has evolved in the Wilson
Pottery Foundation and Museum.
This weekend's two day gathering includes the 19th Annual Wilson Pottery Foundation Gala on Friday and the 21st Annual Wilson Pottery Show on Saturday. Both events will be held at the Texas Lutheran University Student Activity Center.
Paula King-Harper is Hiram's fifth-generation granddaughter and the president of the foundation. She says a few tickets remain for those who are hoping to attend the gala. She says the program will include Guest Speaker Kayla Johnson, a James descendent from the Houston area as well as Special Guest Lawrence Sampleton, the former University of Texas at Austin and Philadelphia Eagles football player. Sampleton has been invited to present
Foundation Gala
this year's first ever Future Pioneer Award. The award will be presented to nominated children who are descendants of both Hiram and James. In addition to the program, the event will include music and food.
Saturday includes an open invitation to a free indoor pottery show on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at TLU. King-Harper says although they host the show in October during the city’s Pecan Fest, the group wanted to do something a bit different as well as in conjunction with the gala.
"The pottery show entrance is free and there will be vendors from across Texas that will be there showing their collectible antique pottery not just for view.

Teatro celebrates sold out recital, Cinco de Mayo celebration
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera(Seguin) – Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin is celebrating a sold-out crowd for its 42nd Annual ¡Viva Teatro! Recital and Cinco de Mayo Festival de Danza y Musica. The recital is set for Friday night at Texas Lutheran University’s Jackson Auditorium.
This year, the nonprofit organization welcomed its largest enrollment yet for both Mariachi Juan Seguin and Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa.
Dr. Yvonne De La Rosa, Teatro's executive director, says more family and friends coming out to support performers resulted in filling the 1,048 seats available at Jackson.
"We want to thank the community for
their undying support of Teatro for the last 41 years. Without the community and city of Seguin and surrounding communities, we would not be where we are today with this sellout crowd that will join us for the 42nd anniversary recital and Cinco De Mayo festival. Thank you to everybody. We see and we feel and we know what Teatro means to the community and we thank you," said De La Rosa.
De La Rosa says the recital, which features
110 students and 15 live performances, will be the culmination of eights months of hard work.
"It was an amazing thing to have seen the tickets fly this year from the secretary's registrar and to know that the community is so excited about your youth programming as well as your adult programming. It's also a little sad because I know that there will be some people who have traditionally showed up and who have made it through the door and
that will not have the capability of doing that, said De La Rosa.
Those unable to get a ticket will later get the chance to view the entire recital when it becomes available online in the next few weeks. Residents are asked to stay updated by checking the group's Facebook page.
Those who have tickets are reminded that doors open at 6:30 p.m. followed by the live performances at 7 p.m.
This year’s recital will be dedicated in memory of Mary Martinez, one of the co-founding Teatro Board Members and one of the program’s first vestuario coordinators. She will posthumously be honored with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Polls, continued.
Gala, continued.
Some will be for sale as well and so we are expecting a wonderful turnout from the Texas community of stonework collectors," said KingHarper.
King-Harper says this year's pottery show not only includes the famous Wilson creations but will provide folks with a look at the pottery of this entire area.
"There were people in Stockdale and St. Hedwig and various parts of the Seguin community who made pottery around that same era so it's like a small history lesson in ceramics. There will be all kinds of pottery," said King-
Instead, it’s ballot time for nine different entities including the Navarro ISD and Springs Hill Special Utility District.
The Navarro ISD is asking voters to consider approval of a $120 million bond issue. The bond projects include the construction of a new elementary school. It also calls for new athletic facilities, including new football, baseball, softball and tennis facilities.
Voters, who reside within the boundaries of the Springs Hill Water Supply Corporation, are also being asked to consider approval of a substantial change for the water provider. Springs Hill wants to convert itself into a special utility district.
Springs Hill General Manager Mike Andrews says growth is among the major factors for the water corporation and converting to a SUD, will give them more options to meet the growing demands for water in their service area.
As already reported, Hayes says voters casting their ballot in the Springs Hill election will have a little paperwork at the beginning.
“Those voters I want to make sure they are aware when they come to vote, they will be asked to sign an affidavit. This is at the requirement of the state of the Election Code and the Water Code. This is not our choice and so I want them to just come in prepared that they will need to sign an affidavit stating that they are an eligible voter in this jurisdiction and they are not a developer or things of that nature,” said Hayes.
The other entities having ballot items are the city of Selma, city of Santa Clara, City of Universal City, the Guadalupe County MUD 6; Lake Dunlap WCID, New Braunfels ISD and Sky Ranch SUD. Voters are reminded to check in advance to see whether or not they live in one of these jurisdictions hosting an election.
If they do not know the answer, they are being asked to contact the elections office at 830-303-6363.
This election will operate with nine Vote Centers meaning that any registered Guadalupe County voter can cast a ballot at any of the following polling sites. Those locations include the Seguin ISD Administration Building; Redemptive Grace Ministries on FM 725; the Geronimo Volunteer Fire Department; the Silver Center; the Central Texas Technology Center; Santa Clara City Hall; Selma City Hall; Schertz Community Center and the New Berlin City Hall.
KWED will have live election coverage beginning at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
Results can be heard on AM 1580 KWED or at seguintoday.com. The election coverage is being brought to listeners courtesy of Gift & Gourmet.
Harper.
Proceeds from the gala and sales from the pottery show will go towards the maintenance of the existing Wilson Pottery Museum located at the Sebastopol House at 704 Zorn St. It will also go toward supporting the foundation's dream of building its own museum in the future.
The gala gets underway at 6 p.m. Friday at the TLU Student Activity Center located at 824 Fleming Dr.
Gala tickets are $50 for adults and $12.50 for kids 12 and under. Tickets and can be purchased by calling King-Harper at 210850-4027. Information can also be found at wilsonpotteryfoundation.org.

Flach
“It is always very difficult to give up someone you love, even when it is time.”
Ida Louise Flach was born June 3, 1926, to Richard and Stella Kott in Comfort, Texas, and passed away on February 29, 2024, at the age of 97. She graduated from Comfort High School and Southwest Texas State Teachers College.
On November 27, 1946, she was married to Alfred E. Flach, Jr. The marriage lasted 61 years. Four sons were born to them. While raising her family she taught school for 31 years and was a member of First Methodist Church for more than 60 years.
Ida was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her only brother, and her two sisters. She is survived by her four sons and their wives: John and Nancy, Marc and Lexi, Tim and Cecelia, and Todd and Lena. As well as her seven grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Ida was born on the family farm before electricity or indoor plumbing and grew up during the Great Depression. She was educated in the one room country “Holiday School” that featured boys and girls outhouses and a horse pen. She eventually continued her education “in town,” sometimes staying overnight at her grandparents’ home. She graduated high school in 1942 during WWII and lived through the shortages of the Depression and the

She was active in her church teaching vacation bible school and Sunday school and was a member of the Women’s Fellowship. She was active in both her children’s and grandchildren’s school activities. She also loved to watch her Spurs, Rangers and Astros. Although farming and ranching didn’t allow time for vacations, there was always time for Sunday family gatherings and occasional Sunday drives with a picnic lunch. She always loved playing dominoes and doing word search puzzles.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

rationing of sugar, gasoline, meat, rubber, and butter during the war.
When Al came home from the South Pacific Theater of War they were married and set up house in the attic of her grandparents’ home. John was born in Kerrville when they lived in Comfort, Marc was born while she and Al attended college in San Marcos, and Tim and Todd were born in Seguin.
When Ida still lived on the farm as a youngster, she did not get into town to attend church. She started a lifetime of devotion in the Methodist Church when she and Al married. Her experience on the remote farm during the Depression and the Homefront deprivations during WWII gave her a deep appreciation and commitment to the family pulling together for the prosperity of her family, community, church and friends. From her scarcity she made abundance. She truly knew how to love as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, neighbor, Christian and teacher.
Every person who ever met Ida (affectionally known as Dama by family and so many others) felt the sincerity and depth of her love. We must now let her go, but we will never stop missing her.
A memorial service celebrating Ida’s life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at First Methodist Church, Seguin at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend Cathe Evins officiating. A reception will follow in Hierholzer Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

New Recommendations For Breast Cancer Screenings
(Undated) -- There’s a new update to a national task force guidance for breast cancer screenings. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is now recommending women between the ages 40 to 74 to get a mammogram every other year. Previous USPSTF guidelines made in 2016 said bi-ennial mammograms should start by age 50 and the decision for women to screen in their 40s was at their discretion. However, groups like the American Cancer Society have already been recommending women start screenings in their 40s. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in U.S behind skin cancer.
