Election Day arrives on Saturday
Seguin ISD athletic facility, Marion ISD bond issue among the ballot items
(Seguin) -- Voters will get to have the final say on multiple ballot items during Saturday’s May 6 Election. Ballot items include city, school and/or water control improvement district issues.
Guadalupe County’s Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes says the first step is knowing where to vote.
“We have on our election’s office website, we have a document called Election Day Locations Overview and in my opinion a great starting place for voters to determine where to go to vote on election day. It’s a color coded spreadsheet similar to the one we had for early voting where we had an overview and it’s kind of a one stop shopping sight as far as if a voter knows they are in Seguin ISD and they want to vote on the Seguin ISD ballot, it list their options for where they can vote on election day. So for example, Seguin ISD, the voting locations on election day are Barnes Middle School... Elections, pg. 4

Spring Fiesta, Juan Seguin School reunion to be held this Sunday
LULAC to host two-day Cinco de Mayo celebration
(Seguin) -- Seguin is gearing up for its Cinco de Mayo celebration in downtown Seguin. The Seguin LULAC Council #682 will be hosting two days of live music, food, and arts and crafts both Friday and Saturday.
Event Chair Wanda Rosales says she invites families to come out and celebrate beginning with tonight's events.
(Seguin) -- A local church seeded on the grounds of what was one of the first segregated schools for Mexican children in the country is opening its doors this weekend for its newest tradition bringing both the present and past together.
Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church on Sunday is inviting the community to its Spring Fiesta and Juan Seguin School Reunion.
Pastor Megan Elliott says the idea for the event really started last year. She says following its dedication and community festival, the congregation noticed that "a ton" of Juan Seguin alumni showed up to visit their old campus.
"This year instead of planning the whole thing ourselves, we invited several alumni to help us plan and put together the program. They got our keynote speaker and really did a lot of the groundwork for us so we are very excited about that. We are hoping that this becomes something that isn't a Spirit of Joy event, that it is a community event that is hosted by Spirit of Joy but is something for everyone in the community but especially those who have graduated from Juan Seguin," said Elliott.
Elliott says Fiesta events will be held from noon to 1 p.m. with tacos from Davila's BBQ plus hot dogs, games and a bouncing house. She says folks will then gather for a more informal program to help host this year's school reunion.
Reunion, pg. 4
"Friday night, we will have Mariachis from 6 to 7 p.m. The first band starts around 7:15 which is Mas-Tequila from Seguin. The second band is Los Fantasmas. They'll start about 9:15 p.m. until 11:30-12 (a.m.). They'll finish up the night," said Rosales.
Festivities return to Central Park on Saturday. Rosales says the group will again kick things off that night with music by Seguin High School's Matador Mariachi Band.
"The event will start at 12, noon time, which will start with our food vendors. We open up with arts and crafts and our main attractions will start also at 6 p.m. with Mariachi music and then we start up the event with color guard at 7 p.m. We will have that presentation and then again, we will start with La Musica (Live Variety Band) from Seguin, the first band and then the second band which starts around 9:15 is Los Enmascarados," said Rosales.
Rosales says the annual event is important for the organization. She says a group priority is to support area youth.
"It is one of our biggest events for scholarships and everything we raise is 100 percent given to the community. We are able to give scholarships to the five schools here in Seguin (area) which is Seguin, Navarro, Marion and Steele and Samuel Clemens," said Rosales.
There is no cost to enter the two day event.

Teatro De Artes invites community to 41st annual Cinco de Mayo Recital
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- It's not every year that Teatro De Artes gets to perform its Viva Teatro! Recital and Cinco de Mayo Festival on the Cinco de Mayo. The stars just perfectly lined up or as perfectly as they could following the recent death of one of its co-founders Vickie De La Rosa. Despite looking forward to tonight’s event with a heavy heart, Vickie's daughter, Dr. Yvonne De La Rosa, says she was quickly reminded about why the organization existed and why continuing this legacy was so important especially to her mother.
"My mother always gave a lot of consejos (advice) to her children and when I say children, it means the people, her children of Teatro and which all of us know are now adults. She says whatever happens, the show must go on and so it's fitting for us to be in the place that we are right now to honor her legacy and what she wanted for our community and we are grateful for the opportunity to be able to continue on for 41 years the vision of not just the co-founders but of a community. We are here to celebrate our community and our community's commitment to ensuring that there is a cultural educational aspect to what their children are learning everyday and so, it is bittersweet, I think, for me but in seeing the rehearsals on Monday, it brought piece to my heart to see the amount of people that were sitting in the audience on rehearsal night which was the parents, to see the amount of students on the stage which is about 120 in just our Folklorico program and to see such pride they had to be on stage," said De La Rosa.
De La Rosa says tonight's recital at Texas Lutheran University's Jackson Auditorium will again illustrate the group's effort to maintain, teach, and celebrate the Mexican American roots, customs, knowledge and traditions through community education.
"We open the doors at 6:30 p.m. to come into Jackson Auditorium. The show begins promptly at 7 p.m. just like Vickie would have wanted. She said we
never start late, we always start on time. Last year, we were at capacity. I know that we will be close to capacity this year which is probably close to 1,000 seats that are available. The recital is free but we will have a donation table where people can leave donations that will go directly to Teatro to continue the thriving programming that we provide here in our community and surrounding community and we will start with our opening which is always La Negra from the State of Jalisco which is our Adult II class and then we have 11 regions from Mexico that will be performed that evening. A lot of different styles of dances that they are going to see this evening and then of course, we are so excited to have our Mariachi Juan Seguin performing, not just our beginners but our intermediate and advanced group. They are a young buddy group. They've only been together eight months and their directors have done wonders with the program," said De La Rosa.
Teatro’s Mariachi Juan Seguin is under the musical direction of Co-Directors Carla Medina, Joe Jimenez, Ernest Sauceda, along with instructor assistant Sophia Sauceda and volunteer assistant, Christina Crow. The Ballet Folklórico De La Rosa dancers are under the direction of Co-Artistic Directors Alberto “Beto” Rincón, Tiffany Rangel, De La Rosa, and instructor assistants, Elizabeth Dominguez and Abraham J. Silva.
De La Rosa says this year's festival features performances from dancers and musicians from Seguin, New Braunfels, Marion, San Marcos, and Luling.
TLU's Jackson Auditorium is located along Fleming Drive just off of 1000 W. Court St. The event is free.
The production is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, Guadalupe County United Way, Humanities Texas, San Antonio Area Foundation, Guadalupe County Community Symposium, H-E-B, City of Seguin and many local businesses and individuals.

Rodriguez Elementary, Seguin High School PAC (Performing Arts Center) and the Seguin ISD Admin Building and all election day polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For example, if a voter is in Marion ISD or the city of Santa Clara, they can go and vote either the Marion ISD Tondre Room or at Santa Clara City Hall. Likewise, City of Cibolo District 5 Election, Cibolo Fire Station #2; San Marcos CISD Election, St. Joseph’s Mission; Lake McQueeney Water Control Improvement District -- those voters can vote in the Lake McQueeney Ski Lodge or the Seguin ISD Admin Building and then Lake Dunlap Water Control Improvement District -- that would at the Seguin ISD Admin Building,” said Hayes.
Hayes says a more specific look at the ballot is also available on the website. Plus she reminds folks that the elections office will not serve as a polling site.
“If you need more detailed information, for example, what the sample ballot is for one of these locations then you can go to the next section below on our website and click on that specific entity so Seguin ISD or Lake Placid and if you go further, one level down, you will actually see the sample ballots. So we’ve tried to make it pretty straight forward to find where to go and what you are going to be voting on. Worst case scenario, voters can always call our office. We will be here on election day but not for voting. No one can vote in our office on election day but we will be here. We can look voters up. We can direct them to the current polling location for what they can vote on but there is just no voting here on election day,” said Hayes.
Among the featured races locally is the Seguin ISD and it’s proposed $7.8 million baseball and softball complex at Seguin High School. The district
is looking to return its baseball program to the main campus. High school baseball programs are currently hosted at the city of Seguin’s aging Smokey Joe Field located at the Seguin Events Complex. By offering the program on campus, school officials say it would cut down on a player’s commute during practices and games. Plus, equipment would no longer have to be hauled off to and from Smokey Joe.
As reported, the baseball/softball fields, if approved, would be constructed together sharing amenities such as concession stands and restrooms. The new fields would also be turf allowing the schools an opportunity to utilize the fields during wet weather. They say it would also save dollars that are no longer needed for the maintenance of grass.
Marion ISD voters are also returning to the polls to decide on a $78.8 million bond issue. The bulk of that proposed bond will address security and the expansion and renovation of its high school. This will mark the district’s third attempt at passing a multi-million-dollar bond issue in one year. This latest attempt, however, is a bit different in that it does include a new competitive gym - a facility that district officials say is desperately needed. The current gym is also described as aging, in need of repairs and again not adequate for the now more than double the number of students enrolled in the district’s middle school and high school athletic programs.
The county elections office website can be found at www.co.guadalupe.tx.us.
Seguin Radio KWED will begin its live election coverage as soon as the polls close at 7 p.m. Saturday. Results can be heard live on AM 1580 KWED or online at SeguinToday.com. Be sure to click on the red and white listen live button located on the top right corner.
Reunion, continued.
"That is going to have our keynote speaker Juan Seguin Alumnus Reyes Cardenas and he is a poet and so he is going to share with us some of this poetry and some of his reflections on Juan Seguin. We also have from Teatro, we are going to have a performance by Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa and a presentation by Community Cycles. We are also presenting our annual community scholarship during the program and then following that program, we are going to have a reception for all former students and so there's going to be refreshments and memorabilia, displays and opportunities for folks to share their stories and remise about their days at Juan Seguin and see the facilities," said Elliott.
Elliott says the church is excited about being able to host both events this Sunday. In fact, she says being able to extend its congregation walls into the community is what the church's initial vision was all about.
"From the very first time that we walked through the school, I think we understood that we were stepping into something that was bigger than ourselves. That this wasn't just about acquiring a piece of land and getting a building so we can have a church -- that we were stepping into a space that had a history, had a story both good and bad and that we needed to respect that and honor that and so I think that has become woven into how we are trying to tell our story in this time and in this place. A lot of the buildings are still under development. There are three buildings across the street from our worship space but probably a couple of years down the road towards being renovated but we really want those to be community centered space not Spirit of Joy centered space and so, we are working really hard at focusing ourselves outward," said Elliott.
The Spring Fiesta, again will be held on Sunday from noon to 1 p.m. followed by the program from 1 to 2 p.m. and reception from 2 to 4 p.m.
All events including food are free and open to the public.
Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church is located at 416 Dolle Ave. next door to the Seguin Police Department.

Vermont Governor Signs Bill Expanding End Of Life Law
(Montpelier, VT) -- Governor Phil Scott has signed a bill that expands Vermont’s end of life law, allowing it to be accessed by people living in other states. The law passed in 2013 allowed medicine to be prescribed to end a person’s life if they had been diagnosed with a disease that would cause death within six months. However, until the governor signed the bill the law was only available to people living in Vermont. Officials say people from other states should discuss end of life options with a doctor in their home state, then request a referral to a doctor in Vermont.
Eli Lilly Alzheimer’s Drug Slowed Progression In Clinical Trial
(Indianapolis, IN) -- Drugmaker Eli Lilly reports its Alzheimer’s treatment donanemab [[ duh-NAN-uh-mab ]] significantly slowed progression of the disease in clinical trials. Lilly released trial data on the company’s website today. It showed that patients who received the monthly antibody infusion during an 18-month study showed a 35-percent lower decline in memory, thinking, and their ability to perform daily activities. The company said Lilly plans to apply for FDA approval of the drug as soon as this quarter.
UT Pausing Abortion Clinic Bans
(Salt Lake City, UT) -- A Utah judge is halting the ban of abortion clinics across the state. A law to ban clinics statewide would have taken effect Wednesday before Judge Andrew Stone stepped in, pausing the ban while the court considers a lawsuit by Planned Parenthood. The healthcare organization argued the ban singles out abortion clinics without providing a rational basis. The law would have immediately barred the state from giving out licenses to clinics and would phase existing licenses out by next year.
AG James Leads Multistate Coalitions to Protect Reproductive Rights
(Albany, ny) -- New York AG Letitia James is leading two multistate coalitions to protect medication abortion access and privacy over family planning decisions. The coalitions of Attorneys General from multiple states filed two briefs in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals arguing recent decisions issued by the same judge in Texas would do serious harm to Americans’ access to the medication abortion drug mifepristone. They insist the judge’s decision would also curtail important privacy protections over adolescents’ reproductive health care decisions. The AG noted basic rights are being assaulted and stripped away from millions of Americans, adding the rulings from a single Texas judge will have devastating effects nationwide unless something is done.

Ask the Master GARDENERS
Q: When is it time to change out my cool season annuals?
A: Pretty much any time now. I notice that the flowering cabbage at the library is starting to lose leaves, and the snapdragons are about bloomed out. I cut them back but as soon as we get our usual heat, they won’t be happy. Warm season annuals are marigold, penta, periwinkle, portulaca, purslane, salvia, and scaevola. My favorite of these is the periwinkle (vinca) because it does so well in those big pots.
Q: How can I protect my vegetable plants? I just picked my first tomato and there was a hole on the bottom where something has been eating.
A: If you are protecting fruits and vegetables from squirrels and birds, you can use plastic netting. Cover the plant to the ground and put soil over the bottom ends. Make sure you overlap the netting, because if there is a way to get to the fruit, squirrels and birds can find it.
Other damage can be caused by pill bugs, snails and slugs. You can control them by using slug and snail baits. Doug Welsh, Extension Horticulturist, says that some success has been achieved using saucers of beer and two-inch-wide bands of calcite clay (kitty litter).
Stinkbugs and leaf-footed bugs can also be a problem. Malcolm Beck
used to say that the best deterrent was your shadow. In other words, check your plants daily and hand pick the bugs off before they go too long and get out of hand. I have had good luck grabbing these bugs and throwing them in a bucket of soapy water. Another friend smashes them with a brick.
If you must use pesticide, Welsh warns us to use the least toxic, effective pesticide labeled for the job. Notice that he mentions the label. Read the label carefully and talk to your local nursery person particularly if you are using it on vegetables. Also, remember to wear gloves, don’t spray while the wind is blowing, and wear a mask. Take into account that there are many good bugs out there. To protect bees, spray in the late evening or early morning. Other good bugs include lady bugs and lacewings whose larvae eat aphids. Praying mantids eat young grasshoppers. Parasitic wasps lay their eggs in aphids and army worm caterpillars. Then when the larvae hatch, they eat the insect.
The simple answer to the bug and animal problem is to plant more than you need. Then if the problem gets ahead of you, you still have enough fruit and vegetables for your family, as well as for the local wildlife.
Q: What can I plant in the shade and partial shade?
A: Several of the sages will do well: cedar sage, lyre leaf sage, and mountain sage. Inland sea oats is a favorite landscape plant as is red and yellow columbine. Turks Cap grows well; just don’t let it get away from you. Beautyberry, a wonderful shrub, is another good choice.
