Rudeloff Road neighbors celebrate road expansion

News of the Rudeloff Road expansion project has many nearby residents celebrating. Among those joining the city of Seguin during its groundbreaking ceremony Monday morning were residents and neighbors Barbara Thexton and Karen Key.

For the past seven years, both women have lived in the Mill Creek subdivision located off State Highway 46. Thexton, says not only have they had to deal with an increase in traffic but also the horrible and unsafe road conditions.

For the last several years, she says all that folks were able to do was laugh.

“We have looked forward to it for three years before I moved in in 2019. There are all kinds of crude jokes about Rudeloff Road. One is (about) a big pothole in the middle of the road. This one (joke) was turn into a hot tub with people drinking,” laughs Thexton.

Rudeloff Road is home to several businesses including the Huber Airpark Airport. It also sits alongside the north end of The Fields at Huber Ranch.

Key says just getting in and out of the neighborhood has become

Rudeloff, continued.

“The road currently is not quite 20 feet wide. I think it kind of varies between 16 to 18 feet most of the way down. It’s going to (be) 60 feet wide with five lanes or a median in some places so two lanes in each direction as you go all the way to 46 -- all the way to the second Huber. And, it’s a 10 feet trail on either side, concrete trail. So, there’s some places we had right-ofway challenges but we had

more and more difficult.

“Every way you come in, there are big dips in the road. This was one of my biggest concerns. The tires are one thing but these big dips in the road -- my granddaughter was living with me and one night at like midnight, she could not get home. She had to turn around and try to find another place to spend the night because she couldn’t get off Huber, either way. Even if you come in through the original section of Mill Creek and you cut over to Rudeloff, there is still one big dip. She tried every way and could not get to my house,” said Key.

Despite the road’s current condition, Thexton says home building in that area has not slowed down. She says the various uses of Rudeloff have all led to traffic

room and moved it off of the road,” said Reynolds.

Upon arriving at the end of Huber Road near the softball fields is where Reynolds says Phase II will get started.

“So, we hope to be finishing up this construction as construction of Phase II picks up. So, it will be a seamless transition to Highway 20. There will be a signalized intersection -- I think there’s already one -- and that’s where we will tie in at,” said Reynolds.

congestion and the deterioration of the roadway.

“We are getting semi-trucks coming in down Rudeloff which makes things worse. They are taking it as a shortcut between 123 and 46 and so our potholes get deeper. The city will come out and repair some potholes, but it is not long before you’re dodging potholes and looking like a drunk driver,” said Thexton.

Thexton admits that because she knew the city was working steadily on a plan, it was easier for her to just “grin and bear it.”

In fact, showing up for Monday’s groundbreaking was just another way for Thexton to show her appreciation.

“One, I want to support the city. Two, I want the city to know that I’m grateful and three, I’m interested in the community,” said Thexton.

The first phase of the roadway project includes transforming the current two-lane road to four to five lanes, with concrete hike and bike trails on each side of the street. Drainage improvements are also part of the project. City officials say they hope to have Phase I completed by December 2025.

After applying in 2015, the city in 2017 was finally awarded funding from the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO).

However, it was additional funds awarded this past October that gave the city the official green light to move forward with its plans.

It was the resiliency of Team Seguin, that Reynolds says in the end, made it all possible.

“The road started way

back in 2016 when we got funding from AAMPO. The design actually started in 2017 with BGE. We spent five years (on it). The capital projects and design team had been working through design and environmental clearance, public meetings, design approvals and there was a little thing called COVID. It made acquisitions quite difficult because it hit right at the time for acquisitions to start on this project.

Rudeloff, pg. 3

www.SEGUINTODAY.com TUE. May 7, 2024 2 NEWS

So as with our current road conditions, which are a little pot holed and rutted, the road here was a little bit rough but Seguin is a tough bunch and COVID brought a significant cost escalation as well. That caused some delays but (it was) a true testament of partnerships and regional support. We give much thanks to AAMPO for their funding support and TxDOT for jumping through all those hoops for us. The project is a true testament of resiliency of Team Seguin. (Thanks to) our incredible partnerships and team efforts to provide significant mobility improvements to our region and not only for vehicles but also the bikes and pedestrians,” said Reynolds.

Located in his district, Jim Lievens, Seguin City Councilman District 3, says he is eyewitness to Seguin’s rapidly growing north side.

Lievens says he can’t help but be excited about the doors that this road expansion project will open for the area.

“This is just the first step. Yes, we’ve seen the growth all over Seguin but we, who live on the north side, have really seen explosive growth on this side. I don’t have to tell you all that. So, infrastructure is the first step. This will open up the doors for many things. Yes, we are going to have the increased mobility. That’s going to be wonderful on not only Rudeloff but Cordova. But guys, I am excited about commercial opportunities. We need more shopping

experiences that are close to us in this area, close to home so we don’t have to travel five, 10 miles one direction or the other. So, my hopes is that this will open the doors to some commercial activity, especially for those who live in the Navarro ISD, such as myself. I hope we get more commercial activity to broaden our tax base so that we are not just a tax base that is based on rooftops. So, I’m excited about all the doors that this is opening and I just can not wait,” said Lievens.

Now that construction will be in full force, Reynolds asks that commuters exercise a bit of patience as this project, in the end, will be well worth it.

“Construction is never fun, never pretty but hopefully, keeping the end game in sight, it is going to be worth it. Progress takes a little bit of challenge and that’s what we are hitting right now. We are in the challenging stage. It was a rough road getting here. There is a lot of impatience and people have been waiting a long time for this roadway. But here we are. We are here. The next year and a half or so is going to be a little rough but once, we get through that and what we end up with is going to be so worth it. We are building the rest of the road through the farm fields to 123 and to be able to have that connectivity between 46 and 123 is just going to be huge,” said Reynolds.

The estimated completion date for the project is December 2025.

Until then, the city plans to maintain road access along Rudeloff for residents and businesses in that area.

TLU Baseball Falls in SCAC Championship Game

CLEBURNE, Texas -- In what made for a back-and-forth game, Texas Lutheran Baseball was unable to respond to a three-run 11th inning from Centenary as the Bulldogs fell 10-8 in extra innings on Sunday at La Moderna Field in Cleburne, Texas. The Bulldogs will face the Gents in a rematch on Monday at noon to crown the 2024 SCAC Tournament Champion with a berth to an NCAA Regional also on the line. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs. com.

Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Adam Peavy (Houston/ Memorial) went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run. Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) tied the program record for walks in a game, recording five walks on Sunday, scoring once.

Johnny Garza Jr. (San Antonio/McCollum) started and pitched five innings, allowing five runs on six hits and four walks. He struck out two batters and did not factor in the decision.

Nolan McInvale (Poth/Poth) pitched six innings in relief and allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks.

The game was scoreless for the first two innings until the Gents exploded for four runs on three hits and a TLU error to take an early 4-0 lead.

Texas Lutheran responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to jump ahead of the Gents, 5-4. After a leadoff single from Hayden Kesselring (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) and a one-out double from Adam Peavy, Carson Draehn (Brenham/Brenham) would hit a two-RBI single up the middle to get the Bulldogs on the board. Chase Bourgeois would hit an RBI single before Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) hit a two-out, two RBI single to conclude the scoring in the inning.

Centenary got a run back in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly and then the Gents took the lead, 6-5, in the top of the seventh.

Adam Peavy would hit his fifth home run of the season in the seventh to tie the game at six. The Gents would get the run back in the top of the eighth.

Down to their last out, Chase Bourgeois would tie the game at seven with a two-out RBI single through the left side to send the game to extras.

The two teams went scoreless in the tenth before the Gents got the scoring started in the 11th with three runs on three hits and an error. The Bulldogs attempted a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning as Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) drove in a run on an RBI fielder’s choice to load the bases but the Bulldogs would strand the bases loaded to end the game.

“It is always very difficult to give up someone you love, even when it is time.”

Ida Louise Flach was born June 3, 1926, to Richard and Stella Kott in Comfort, Texas, and passed away on February 29, 2024, at the age of 97. She graduated from Comfort High School and Southwest Texas State Teachers College. On November 27, 1946, she was married to Alfred E. Flach, Jr. The marriage lasted 61 years. Four sons were born to them. While raising her family she taught school for 31 years and was a member of First Methodist Church for more than 60 years.

Ida was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her only brother, and her two sisters. She is survived by her four sons and their wives: John and Nancy, Marc and Lexi, Tim and Cecelia, and Todd and Lena. As well as her seven grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Ida was born on the family farm before electricity or indoor plumbing and grew up during the Great Depression. She was educated in the one room country “Holiday School” that featured boys and girls outhouses and a horse pen. She eventually continued her education “in town,” sometimes staying overnight at her grandparents’ home. She graduated high school in 1942 during WWII and lived through the shortages of the Depression and the

rationing of sugar, gasoline, meat, rubber, and butter during the war.

When Al came home from the South Pacific Theater of War they were married and set up house in the attic of her grandparents’ home. John was born in Kerrville when they lived in Comfort, Marc was born while she and Al attended college in San Marcos, and Tim and Todd were born in Seguin.

When Ida still lived on the farm as a youngster, she did not get into town to attend church. She started a lifetime of devotion in the Methodist Church when she and Al married. Her experience on the remote farm during the Depression and the Homefront deprivations during WWII gave her a deep appreciation and commitment to the family pulling together for the prosperity of her family, community, church and friends. From her scarcity she made abundance. She truly knew how to love as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, neighbor, Christian and teacher.

Every person who ever met Ida (affectionally known as Dama by family and so many others) felt the sincerity and depth of her love. We must now let her go, but we will never stop missing her.

A memorial service celebrating Ida’s life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at First Methodist Church, Seguin at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend Cathe Evins officiating. A reception will follow in Hierholzer Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin St., Seguin, Texas, 78155, or a charity of one’s choice.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www.tresehewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Third Of Americans Could Have Had Data Stolen In Health Care Hack

(Washington, DC) -- A third of Americans may have had their data stolen in a health care hack. That’s what UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty estimated when testifying before Congress. He talked about a February ransomware attack on a UnitedHealth Group subsidiary that affected pharmacies across the U.S. Witty said in written testimony that it will take “several months” for the company to identify and notify those impacted by the hack as it continues to go through the stolen data.

Study: “Huff And Puff” Exercises Reduce Risk Of Early Death

(Undated) -- New research shows exercise that makes you “huff and puff” reduces your risk of an early death by 20 percent. Australian researchers analyzed nearly 200 studies from over the past two decades and looked at how cardiorespiratory fitness that works out the heart, lungs and muscles predicted future health outcomes. What they found is that those with high fitness levels had a 20-percent lower risk of premature death, chronic disease and complications from poor health. The lead author of the study says the message is simple: “if you do a lot of huff and puff exercise, then your risk of dying early” is reduced.”

Biden Announces $3B Lead Pipe Plan

(Wilmington, NC) -- President Biden is announcing a three-billion-dollar plan to replace the nation’s lead pipes. Biden made the announcement during a campaign stop in North Carolina, and said the plan would improve public health and provide clean drinking water. Biden noted how lead pipes can damage brains and kidneys, especially in children, and that the new pipes are “tough, durable, and they don’t rust.” The EPA says the three-year plan would affect nearly two million lead pipes nationwide.

PA Killer Nurse Given Life Sentence

(Butler, PA) -- A Pennsylvania nurse will spend the rest of her life behind bars for killing 17 patients with excessive doses of insulin. Heather Pressdee pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison without parole after being accused of administering high doses of insulin to patients at rehabilitation centers in Pennsylvania between 2020 and 2023. The state attorney general’s office said murder charges were filed against the 41-year-old nurse only in cases where physical evidence was available. In a statement, the attorney general said Pressdee “used her position of trust as a means to poison patients who depended on her for care.”
