Golf Course Renovation a GO!

City approves green light to renovate the greens at Max Starcke Park

(Seguin) -- The total renovation of the Starcke Park Golf Course can proceed. The Seguin City Council on Tuesday accepted the low bid of $7.19 million from Mid America Golf and Landscapes. The Missouri based company’s bid was so low that it will allow some additional projects to be completed at the golf course.

Golf Course General Manager Bruce Allen says they are thrilled with the bid from Mid America.

“In 2022, we asked the National Golf Foundation to evaluate our golf course. They did. They came back and they recommended a complete renovation. With that in mind, the council approved the hiring of Ross Golf Design and Brian and his team did a great job coming up with a good plan and we shared that with you all at the workshop in January and you gave us a blessing to solicit bids.

New sights and sounds coming to the Seguin Coliseum

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Coliseum is getting a major upgrade, that should improve the overall user experience of the city's largest public meeting space.

The Seguin City Council on Tuesday approved the a complete replacement of the audio and visual systems in the building.

Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones says the work comes after some other improvements were also recently made to the facility. Jones says the upgrade to the A/V system is something that's long overdue.

"We are very fortunate at budget, you all approved the chairs at the Coliseum, new stage lighting. We replaced the original stage lighting back in 1977 and now, audio and video. If you go to conferences -- you go to San Marcos to their convention center, if you go to New Braunfels, their convention center -- you will see that they've got screens everywhere. They've got projectors that are mounted up high. We have a cart that goes out in the middle of everything and pretty wonky so we are pleased to come forward with updated audio, video for the Coliseum," said Jones.

Jones described some of the upgrades to the council. He says they will all greatly enhance what people see and hear while they are in the coliseum.

"We will find new projectors, large screens -- if you are looking at the Coliseum, you've got the screen in the middle and that will be relocated but we will have two more up high on the sides and then two in the very back when we have the chamber luncheons. Those who use the breakout rooms, the audio can be synched to each of the rooms even though there will be a camera in there that you can project speakers and the video screens as they are speaking which you have that at convention centers around the state and around the country. We can even use that camera to have public meetings and go online with it as well," said Jones.

City officials say they are excited about this change. They say the enhanced audio and video capabilities should

Renovation, continued.

We were fortunate that we received four bids from four very good companies and we are also fortunate that Mid America Golf and Landscapes gave us a good bid and it’s low enough that we can take care of all the other stuff that we need to do in house and hopefully stay within that budget,” said Allen.

help to increase the usage of the coliseum.

"It took a long time to get to this point, to get to where we felt like okay, we've got something that is really going to make a difference, to bring in conferences, weddings and those things is what Steve talks about -- bringing in people. People come and stay at hotels, spend money here, sales taxes go up whenever you have special events and conventions in Seguin," said Jones.

The city will spend just under $240,000 to purchase and install the new equipment.

The company has tackled a number of projects around the country. He says they will be able to deliver exactly what the city wants for the redesigned municipal golf course.

“You had a list of all the jobs that they’ve done in Texas. Right now, they are even working for the city of Harlingen working for my hometown renovating that golf course that I think was built in 1938 too. We are very happy

to have them. Brian and his team is happy with them and like I said, at this time, staff would ask for approval of the resolution to authorize Steve to enter an agreement with them and begin the renovation of the golf course,” said Allen. The city has been working towards a total makeover of the course for years. The course will be closed for approximately one year while the renovations are made.

Don't forget to say thank you

City observes Public Service Recognition Week

(Seguin) -- If you see police, fire or other city personnel this week, make sure you say thank you.

This week is Public Service Recognition Week. It's a time to honor those who provide important services to the public.

Seguin City Manager Steve Parker says his staff does amazing work, and he wants them to know how much they are appreciated.

"I just hope the citizens realize what a dedicated devoted staff we have here in our community. They love this community even if they live here or not, they are dedicated, hardworking individuals. We are doing everything we can this week to honor them so if you see a city worker around, please acknowledge them and tell them thank you. They are trying really hard to better this community," said Parker.

Mayor Donna Dodgen agrees that city staff deserves this recognition. She says they are essential to the city providing quality services to the people in this community.

"Anytime, you see one of the city of Seguin employees, you see our fire, you see our EMS, you see our police officers, please say 'thank you.' I would like for us to do it every single day but especially this week. They work really really hard. They keep us consistent. All of us change periodically and so they are the consistency that we have in our hometown," said Dodgen.

The special salute as part of Public Service Recognition Week was made during Tuesday night's meeting of the Seguin City Council.

Meanwhile, all employees have been kept happily busy these last few days. “It is always very difficult to give up someone you love, even when it is time.”

Ida Louise Flach was born June 3, 1926, to Richard and Stella Kott in Comfort, Texas, and passed away on February 29, 2024, at the age of 97. She graduated from Comfort High School and Southwest Texas State Teachers College. On November 27, 1946, she was married to Alfred E. Flach, Jr. The marriage lasted 61 years. Four sons were born to them. While raising her family she taught school for 31 years and was a member of First Methodist Church for more than 60 years.

Ida was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her only brother, and her two sisters. She is survived by her four sons and their wives: John and Nancy, Marc and Lexi, Tim and Cecelia, and Todd and Lena. As well as her seven grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Ida was born on the family farm before electricity or indoor plumbing and grew up during the Great Depression. She was educated in the one room country “Holiday School” that featured boys and girls outhouses and a horse pen. She eventually continued her education “in town,” sometimes staying overnight at her grandparents’ home. She graduated high school in 1942 during WWII and lived through the shortages of the Depression and the

rationing of sugar, gasoline, meat, rubber, and butter during the war.

When Al came home from the South Pacific Theater of War they were married and set up house in the attic of her grandparents’ home. John was born in Kerrville when they lived in Comfort, Marc was born while she and Al attended college in San Marcos, and Tim and Todd were born in Seguin.

When Ida still lived on the farm as a youngster, she did not get into town to attend church. She started a lifetime of devotion in the Methodist Church when she and Al married. Her experience on the remote farm during the Depression and the Homefront deprivations during WWII gave her a deep appreciation and commitment to the family pulling together for the prosperity of her family, community, church and friends. From her scarcity she made abundance. She truly knew how to love as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, neighbor, Christian and teacher.

Every person who ever met Ida (affectionally known as Dama by family and so many others) felt the sincerity and depth of her love. We must now let her go, but we will never stop missing her.

A memorial service celebrating Ida’s life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at First Methodist Church, Seguin at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend Cathe Evins officiating. A reception will follow in Hierholzer Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin St., Seguin, Texas, 78155, or a charity of one’s choice.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www.tresehewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.
