Your Best Life Festival moves indoors this year
CindyAguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) - Living your best life begins this weekend.
NAMI Guadalupe County will be hosting its third annual Your Best Life Festival on Saturday at the Seguin Coliseum.
The free community health and wellness event will feature over 50 agencies and businesses who will be providing information and services for all ages.
NAMI Guadalupe County is a local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The organization is committed to providing education, advocacy, and support to families and individuals affected by mental illness.
NAMI Affiliate Leader
Barbara Vinson says the free event is being hosted in observance of May which is Mental Health Month.
“This is our third year to have a festival. COVID knocked us out of the ballpark two years so we’ve had two in Central Park and so we decided, May is already a rainy month and we decided let’s move to the Coliseum. We can have more vendors. We can have bathrooms. We can be inside. We can go grow and we have exactly right now 62 vendors -- all related to mental health,” said Vinson.
Vinson says the event is not only information but a day of fun and activities.

Matador Stadium to host Family Bash, Movie Night
(Seguin) -- Movie night is always a special time for families including the Matador Family.
The Seguin ISD will be opening up the field at Matador Stadium for Friday’s Second Annual Matador Family Bash and Movie Night.
Seguin ISD officials say the event promises an evening of family-friendly entertainment, student showcases, and a special outdoor screening of the animated film Ratatouille.
Making sure she does not forget your cozy blanket tonight is Seguin ISD Superintendent Veronica Vijil. Dr. Vijil says this event is a wonderful opportunity for the “school community to unite, celebrate students, and create lasting memories.”
“It’s my first one so it’s just so exciting to me. It brings me back to my childhood days when mom and dad would pack the car. We’d all get packed in the car and go to a drive-in movie and this is really great memories and I think here, we have another time for families to come together. Bring your pillows. Bring your blankets and enjoy a really great movie and family time. It’s a really great way to end the year,” said Dr. Vijil.
Bash festivities include various free games and activities for all ages. Attendees can also enjoy items from the concession stand while enjoying a variety of performances by Seguin ISD students.
The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Team has been instrumental in planning and organizing this year’s event. Dr. Vijil says these dedicated student leaders have

“Come one. Come all. It’s a wonderful, wonderful event. It’s such an important weekend. We know that Mother’s Day will be Sunday so we have kind of revolved our theme around Mother’s Day and really a shout out to mother and mother figures. We will also have a booth that will have an arts and crafts session where people there can make arts and crafts for their moms or mother figures and so we are so excited. It’s such a great ending to our school year and it’s really all about the fun,” said Dr. Vijil. Vinson says individuals and families will learn about a number of resources available to them including more about NAMI.

We will have a Stigma Free photo booth that is going to be fun and we are just trying to get this out to the public. FEED ME, SEYMOUR!
Little Shop of Horrors Opens at SHS
(Seguin) -- There’s nothing like a little comedy rock musical to help wrap up the 2023-2024 school year for the Seguin High School Matador Theatre group. The theatre department, all weekend long, will present the cult classic Little Shop of Horrors at the SHS Performing Arts Center.
Theatre Director Lydia Robles says this, no doubt, was the year that the high school had the right group of actors to pull off this show. She says it took certain voices, talents and abled bodies to maneuver the puppets that are at the forefront of this musical.
“Students have really enjoyed putting it together and they have been working really hard but it was also a good piece in that it is challenging our students. It’s not a simple show or an easy show to do. So, they’ve stepped up to the challenge and they are working really hard to put our final pieces together,” said Robles.
Robles says this classic from the 1960s has remained a fan favorite and promises to keep the audience entertained from start to finish.
“It is a musical about an alien plant that a Skid Row florist takes in and he finds out that this plant actually feeds off of blood and so, our conflict centers around this nerdy lovable Seymour Krelborn and he is in love
with a knockout dynamite looking girl but there are bad things that Seymour has to do that challenges him and he starts to question what he is doing is correct or what he is doing is what he should be doing,” said Robles.
The show is designed with high energy throughout. Robles says the show features the sounds of the 60s and a collage of other funky music.
“It’s got like the doo-wop sound and the groove sound, lots of up beat fun characters going on. It’s an experience. Little Shop of Horror is a real treat and it’s one of those shows that if you know it, chances are that you’ve memorized the songs. You know it well,” said Robles.
Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. A Sunday matinee is also scheduled for 3 p.m. A senior ceremony, presenting the work and commitment of 10 graduating seniors, will also be held prior to showtime at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets online are $12 for adults and $8 for students. Only cash tickets will be sold at the door. Those tickets increase to $15 for adults and $10 for students.
A link for tickets can be found on the Seguin ISD or Seguin High School Drama Club & Drama Mamas Facebook page.
Another Schoenvogel takes district MVP to lead Marion 26-3A all-district accolades
Chris Austin
(Marion) -- Marion High School’s Huck Schoenvogel led 2024 Bulldog baseball district postseason accolades with the District MVP, a feat his older brother achieved last year for the Marion baseball program.
The award for the junior Huck gave the Schoenvogel family back-to-back District 263A MVP awards after Owen Schoenvogel, who graduated in 2023, took the award last year.
Owen is now a member of the Schreiner University baseball team in Kerrville. The younger Schoenvogel was selected as the Newcomer of the Year in 2023.
Bulldog senior catcher Evan Gibbons repeated as the Defensive MVP. Gibbons shared the award this year with Randolph’s Messiah Miller.
And Marion’s Jack Wells was named the Newcomer of the Year. The freshman was a major contributor on the Marion pitching staff this season.

Rhonda was a graduate of Seguin High School in 1980 where she was a member of the varsity choir and the Gold Battalion Dance Team lieutenant. After high school, she attended the University of Texas in Austin where she studied Art and Business. Shortly after school, she came back home to Seguin where she married Charlie in 1997. Tocquigny
Marie Elise Tocquigny, age 67 of Seguin, passed away on May 4, 2024. Elise was born in Weslaco, Texas on November 14, 1956, to Beverly (Stone) and Joe Raymond Tocquigny.
Elise worked with her parents, Beverly and Joe in their commercial nursery, Green Gate, in Seguin. Under her ownership, Green Gate became a thriving retail garden center that served customers throughout Central Texas and beyond. Elise could propagate any plant and freely shared that expertise.
Elise was an amazing artist and poet,
and faith. She loved being in the kitchen preparing all of her favorite recipes for family and friends as well as those in need of comfort or joy. She was at her happiest when planning and coordinating trips, get-togethers, and community activities.
With what little free time she found, she volunteered her services to the charities she held dear, including the Christian Cupboard, the ELCA’s “God’s Work, Our Hands,” and The American Cancer Society’s “Relay For Life.” The few moments she took for herself were spent at home either on her and Charlie’s back porch or looking out the kitchen window where she loved watching the hummingbirds and looking at the wildflowers.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, May 19th, 2024 in the Worship Center of Spirit of Joy Church in Seguin at 3 pm with a reception to follow. If you can attend, please know that all are welcome. If you are unable to, please do as Rhonda would and enjoy the birds and the flowers with the next opportunity you get. You’ll find her there.

Sosa VITAL STATISTICS
Pablo Flores Sosa went to be with our Lord on May 6, 2024. He passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. Pablo was born on October 22, 1944, to Pedro and Sofia (Flores) Sosa in Kingsbury, TX.
Pablo is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Gloria Sosa; infant son, Pablo Sosa Jr.; parents, Pedro and Sofia Sosa; brother, Reynaldo “Rey” Sosa and sister, Alicia Bennett.
Left to cherish and honor his memory are his children, Mary Jane Sosa (Chuck), Anthony Sosa (Wife Amy), Velma Sosa, Diane Sosa (Bob), Adam Sosa (Wife Irma); grandchildren, Cheyenne Terry (Kyle), Natalie McWhorter, Hayley, Anthony, and Amyah Sosa, Celeste Schwarzlose, Alexa and Christian Sanchez, Dante Medina, Anthony Rodriguez, Andrea, Amber, and Joshua Lopez. He is further survived by his great-grandchildren Kameren, Kamilah, Vladimir, Lillith, and Raiden Terry, Aiyanna, Elijah, Evelynn, and Alaina Kincade, and Elizabeth and Jacob Rodriguez; his siblings, Ruben Sosa (Rita), Virginia Torres, Juan Sosa (Becky), Mary Ann Zamora, Pedro Sosa (Lupe), Yolanda Sosa (Toni), Sulema Sosa, Simon Sosa (Isabel), Lucinda Sosa, Oralia Salas (Jesse), Maria Davis (George), Adela Sosa (Rick), Adelaida Rodriguez (Jose), Martina Lopez, and Martin Sosa.
Pablo F. Sosa was a dedicated Husband, Father, Grandfather and Brother. He was the oldest of 18 children and with a 3rd grade education,
he worked very hard to provide for his family by working in the fields, then starting out as a laborer in the concrete industry and working up to retiring as a concrete superintendent. There are several bridges, sidewalks and other structures that show all his hard work all over the state of Texas. His hard work and dedication to his family allowed him to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. He was a man of faith and took pride in instilling those values into his children. He was a humble man that did not let the events of life get him down and was always worry free. He was well known and left an impact on those he met. Spending quality time with friends and loved ones, often going on fishing trips, running to the store for a scratch ticket, cruising around the park counting turtles, relishing the thrills of high-octane drag racing, tractor pull events, or playing Spanish bingo, he embraced every moment with happiness and enjoyment. And among the laughter, family, and friendship, there was always a cold Miller High Life in hand, a true testament to his appreciation for the finer moments shared with those closest to him. His smile, infectious laughter, values, and legacy will live on forever. Our hearts are heavy; however, the love and memories will live on in everyone that he encountered. We can find peace knowing that he is comfortable and reunited with his wife Mary Sosa.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Pedro (Lalo) Sosa, Simon Sosa, Anthony Sosa, Dante Medina, Christian Sanchez, Victor Martinez, and Guillermo Belmarez. Honorary Pallbearers are Nicolas Medina and James Robledo.
Public Visitation for Pablo’s family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Goetz Funeral Home. The Holy Rosary will be recited that evening by Pablo’s family at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass for Pablo will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Saturday, May 11, 2024. Interment will follow at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
“It is always very difficult to give up someone you love, even when it is time.”
Ida Louise Flach was born June 3, 1926, to Richard and Stella Kott in Comfort, Texas, and passed away on February 29, 2024, at the age of 97. She graduated from Comfort High School and Southwest Texas State Teachers College.
On November 27, 1946, she was married to Alfred E. Flach, Jr. The marriage lasted 61 years. Four sons were born to them. While raising her family she taught school for 31 years and was a member of First Methodist Church for more than 60 years.
Ida was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her only brother, and her two sisters. She is survived by her four sons and their wives: John and Nancy, Marc and Lexi, Tim and Cecelia, and Todd and Lena. As well as her seven grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Ida was born on the family farm before electricity or indoor plumbing and grew up during the Great Depression. She was educated in the one room country “Holiday School” that featured boys and girls outhouses and a horse pen. She eventually continued her education “in town,” sometimes staying overnight at her grandparents’ home. She graduated high school in 1942 during WWII and lived through the shortages of the Depression and the
rationing of sugar, gasoline, meat, rubber, and butter during the war.
When Al came home from the South Pacific Theater of War they were married and set up house in the attic of her grandparents’ home. John was born in Kerrville when they lived in Comfort, Marc was born while she and Al attended college in San Marcos, and Tim and Todd were born in Seguin.
When Ida still lived on the farm as a youngster, she did not get into town to attend church. She started a lifetime of devotion in the Methodist Church when she and Al married. Her experience on the remote farm during the Depression and the Homefront deprivations during WWII gave her a deep appreciation and commitment to the family pulling together for the prosperity of her family, community, church and friends. From her scarcity she made abundance. She truly knew how to love as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, neighbor, Christian and teacher.
Every person who ever met Ida (affectionally known as Dama by family and so many others) felt the sincerity and depth of her love. We must now let her go, but we will never stop missing her.
A memorial service celebrating Ida’s life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at First Methodist Church, Seguin at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend Cathe Evins officiating. A reception will follow in Hierholzer Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin St., Seguin, Texas, 78155, or a charity of one’s choice.
You are invited to sign the guest book at www.tresehewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.
Study: Cannabis, Nicotine Use Increases Infant Death
(Portland, OR) -- A new OHSU study finds the use of nicotine and cannabis during pregnancy dramatically increases the rate of infant death. Researchers evaluated hospital data and vital statistics from more than three million pregnant patients with documented substance use. They found that the rate of infant death was four times higher in users of both cannabis and nicotine compared with non-users, and nearly twice as high compared with users of just one of those. Researchers are calling for more research and patient education for better outcomes.
Researchers In Oregon Identify Fentanyl Syndrome
(Portland, OR) -- Researchers in Oregon have identified a brain syndrome caused by fentanyl for the first time. A man in his 40s was hospitalized after snorting crushed fentanyl with no history of previously having used opioids. An MRI showed inflammation in the white matter of his brain which caused him to go unconscious and possibly lead to permanent brain damage or death. It’s happened in heroin patients, but this is the first time with fentanyl. The man was hospitalized for nearly a month before going to a nursing home for further rehabilitation. Researchers don’t know how much fentanyl is needed to cause the syndrome. The study is published in JAMA Network Open.
