CCSCT, TLU pairing up to host poverty simulation event

(Seguin) -- Poverty is a reality for many individuals and families. But unless you’ve experienced poverty, it’s difficult to truly understand. That’s the awareness that the Community Council of South-Central Texas wants to bring to us this week. In helping to share those dynamics behind living in poverty, Bobby Deike, the CCSCT executive director, says together with the TLU Nursing Program, the group will be hosting an interactive poverty simulation and free lunch this Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum.

During the simulation, individuals will role-play a month in poverty and experience low-income families’ lives.

Deike says while many entities have been invited to participate, he extends the invitation to anyone else who thinks that they too might benefit from this learning experience.

“Many of the departments with the city or the county or the hospital through their day to day work, they encounter people living in poverty

and sometimes by having more of an understanding of the barriers that people living in poverty have, they will be able to better serve and understand those individuals and families and so that’s the real purpose is to just increase the awareness and increase the understanding of what people living in poverty have to go through just to make it through the day, through the month to make ends meet. That’s the primary purpose,” said Deike.

CCSCT officials say the Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) bridges the gap from misconception to understanding. Officials say CAPS is an interactive immersion experience and again, sensitizes community participants to the realities of poverty.

Registration, which includes a free lunch, is available at https:// ccsctpovertysimulation.rsvpify. co. A QR code to reserve a spot can also be found on the CCSCT Facebook page. Limited space remains so registration is encouraged as soon as possible.

Do you hear the SENIORS SING!

SHS Theatre takes on Les Miserables to close the year

(Seguin) -- For some Seguin High School seniors, there’s not only that final game or final concert. There’s that final time of being on stage under those bright lights.

Four years of working on stage, in tech or backstage comes to a wrap this weekend as this year’s seniors perform in their final production of the year, Les Miserables, the School Edition.

For many, Les Mis has been enjoyed in multiple stage variations not to mention film and even a TV series. But for many of this year’s seniors who pioneered in live streams and YouTube film performances due to COVID, they couldn’t ask for a sweeter finale.

Applauding the entire cast and crew’s ability to master the “not so easy” show is Director Lydia Robles. Robles says this group includes incredible vocal talent. She says it

made choosing this production easy.

“It is a completely vocal show. There’s no dialogue. No character just stops and talks to the audience. Everything is sung and the scoring in it of itself is not your typical composition where you can just pick out the melody. There’s a lot of intricate rhythms and it takes a certain talent to be able to pick out their rhythms and their vocal parts and the intricacies that such a show contains. There’s a reason why this is one of the longest running musicals on Broadway. It is a truly gripping and compelling piece story wise but also the music is just gorgeous and when it’s done well, you can’t help but absolutely love it,” said Robles.

Cast with the lead role is Senior Garrett Reinhard. Reinhard describes the show as spectacular.

“My character’s name is Jean Valjean. He was a quote unquote

criminal. It started off he stole a loaf of bread to save his family and he was put in prison for 19 years and he goes through this phase of going from a hardened criminal to a kind of soft and sentimental man trying to figure out which decisions to make. He has to take care of a child and he goes to war in the French Revolution and meets his child’s love interest. My character is very complex. For my senior year, I mean this is probably the musical that I’ve wanted to do since I was little. My dad has seen this show and my mom has too so to end it off my senior year with this show is really something special. I’ve been doing theater here at the high school since my freshman year and I would have never thought that I would have gotten the lead in the last musical of my senior year,” said Reinhard.

City set to wrap up community survey today

(Seguin) -- Time is running out if you wish to have a say in Seguin's future.

Today is the deadline to complete the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy Survey.

This is the first ever opportunity for such a survey being launched by the city of Seguin and the Seguin Economic Development Corporation.

City officials say they are inviting residents to take a

Sing, continued.

brief survey that will help to develop this strategy into one that benefits all residents. By answering the survey, they say citizens are helping shape the future of the community. The survey is said to take approximately 10 minutes to complete. To take the survey, visit www.view.seguinedc. com/ceds.

City officials encourage residents to share the survey opportunity with friends, family, and co-workers.

Also enduring her last role on the high school stage will be Senior Amanda Munoz. Munoz says a lot of hard work also went into filling the shoes of her character.

“I play a character. Her name is Eponine and basically from the moment she enters on stage, there will be a younger version of me, and she has the perfect life. She’s spoiled by her parents but whenever I show up as the character, she is poor. She is dirty. She is having a really hard time. I mean the show is Les Mis so I would be surprised if she wasn’t. My character’s whole thing is she is in love with this guy who is another character in the play. His name is Marius and he’s part of the French Revolution and she’s willing to do anything for her to notice him. I sing a lot of songs and duets and trios with him and his love interests. It’s a really complex character. The music is not easy at all. We’ve worked really hard on it and it’s a really hard character to play I would say for almost everybody in the show but I’m really excited to perform as this character and show you guys what she goes through and convey the story,” said Munoz.

Also sharing in her role is Senior Aly Burns. Burns describes her character as helping the 19th-century exconvict in France find redemption and grace.

“I play Fantine. I would say Fantine is like the epitome of society takes the most from the people who have the least. She opens the show and she’s getting money and the foreman at the factory that she works with is hitting on her and the girls are all mean to her and she just gets isolated and she has this moment of losing her job and feeling hopeless and she’s at a whole new low and she goes and becomes a prostitute to support her child and it’s really miserable and then she dies and then she comes back

at the very end as a ghost to help Jean Valjean on his journey of his death,” said Burns.

Munoz adds that so many hours were dedicated to this particular production. She says seeing it all come together will be a bittersweet moment for all cast members.

“Just know that we all worked super hard on this show. We spent countless hours here basically every day of the week and it’s going to be worth it. We all worked together, and we all know that we have a show to put on this Friday and it’s been a lot but also so much fun like going through a show like this with the people that I spent my whole high school career with. I know myself; I have not stopped working since we got the cast list put out for this show,” said Munoz.

In addition to high school students, several younger kids from across the district were also invited to be a part of the production. According to directors, the children were needed to fully encompass the era and poverty that was part of the story being told.

Burns says the invitation to enjoy what she and her peers have been able to accomplish these last few weeks is open to anyone in the community.

“I think that everyone should come see the show because there is genuinely something for everyone whether you want to come hear vocals, whether you want to come see the acting side, whether you just want to see the sets and the lights. There is genuinely something for everyone to enjoy,” said Burns.

Show times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Seguin High School Performing Arts Center.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students. Online tickets can be purchased at https://our. show/lesmis. The link is also available on the Seguin High School Drama Club & Drama Mamas Facebook page.

TLU Baseball Coach Rick Heines Announces RESIGNATION

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Head Baseball Coach Rick Heines announced today that he is stepping down from his position, after leading the Bulldogs for three seasons and being on the Texas Lutheran staff for eleven seasons. He finishes his tenure with an 87-43 record over three seasons.

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead the baseball program at TLU over the last three seasons,” said Heines. “I am also grateful for the trust placed in me for such an important job by President Cottrell, Coach Bill Miller, and Coach Greg Burnett. I hope that after eleven years at TLU and ten full seasons, my contributions have benefited the program and the University. I want to thank my assistant coaches and the players who trusted in the process and the vision. The players make the program successful, and it is the daily interaction with them that is the most fulfilling aspect of the job.

TLU will always hold a place in my heart, and I will be a life-long fan of Bulldogs baseball. However, the time has come for me to seek new challenges elsewhere.”

The 2023 SCAC Coach of the Year, Heines led the Bulldogs to two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships (2021, 2023), an NCAA Regional in 2021, as well as their first outright SCAC regular season championship in 2023. TLU finished with a conference record of 15-3 (.833) in 2021, the second best conference winning percentage in program history, and 17-4 (.810) in 2022 and 2023, tying for the fourth highest conference winning percentages in program history.

“Rick Heines is an outstanding coach and an outstanding person,” said Director of Athletics Bill Miller. “He committed over a decade of his life to TLU and TLU Baseball. He was an excellent assistant and pitching coach for eight years and transitioned to an outstanding head coach, culminating in him being named the SCAC Baseball Coach of the Year in 2023. His three years as head coach were three of the best years that TLU Baseball has ever experienced. Under his direction, the TLU Baseball Team won the 2021 SCAC Tournament Championship

and qualified for the NCAA National Championship Baseball Tournament. In 2023 the TLU Baseball team was defeated in the SCAC Tournament Championship Game. During the three years that Coach Heines was the head coach, the TLU Baseball Team qualified for the SCAC Championship every year. We greatly appreciate Coach Heines’ long-term commitment to the TLU Baseball Program and wish him all of the best in his future endeavors. He has left a significant impact on the TLU Baseball Program as well as on the lives of the young men that he coached.”

Texas Lutheran reached the 25-win mark in all three seasons under Heines with a high mark of 30 in 2021. Heines was named SCAC Coach of the Year in his third and final season leading the program, as the Bulldogs won the SCAC regular season title and made their second SCAC Tournament Championship game appearance under Heines. The Bulldogs would win the 2021 SCAC Tournament and win two games in the Wisconsin-Whitewater Regional in 2021. The Bulldogs would make the SCAC Tournament in all three seasons under Heines.

Under Heines, six Bulldogs earned All-West Region honors and one Bulldog, shortstop Joe Jimenez, was named an All-American in 2022, the first All-America honors for Texas Lutheran since 2018.

Texas Lutheran players earned a total of 34 All-SCAC honors over three years with Heines at the helm, including back-to-back-back SCAC Player of the Year honors in 2021 (Tyler Cauley), 2022 (Joe Jimenez), and 2023 (Tyler Post). The Bulldogs also won the SCAC Elite 19 Award, awarded to the student-athlete who has at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA, at least 60 credit hours and earns All-SCAC honors for that particular season, in 2021 with Tyler Cauley taking home the honors. Cauley would also be the lone Academic All-American under Heines, receiving the honors from CoSIDA in 2021.

Texas Lutheran has launched a national search for the next Texas Lutheran baseball coach and will not make any comments on prospective candidates or the search process.

Thomas

Norwood Henry (“Woody”) Thomas, Senior, age 89 of Seguin passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023. Norwood was born on July 14, 1933, in Gonzales County, Texas to Ophelia (Wright) and Julius Thomas, Senior. Norwood, his parents, and 11 brothers and sisters moved to Seguin when he was 8.

At the age of 16, Norwood, known by his nickname “Woody”, would begin a career in the scrap metal business that would span nearly half a century. Starting with employment at Schroeder Scrap Yard in Seguin, where he would swing a sledgehammer at scrap autos, he would develop an unsurpassed work ethic that would guide him in life. Following 3 years at Schroeder, and 11 years working for Kaiser Automotive cutting up scrap autos and farm equipment, Woody would find a home that allowed him to “do a job right” as he had been taught by his parents.

In 1970, “Woody” joined Horowitz Salvage, the same year that Commercial Metals Company (CMC) purchased the yard and included it with the SMI-Texas portion of the business. In time, he became Foreman running the outdoor day to day operations and was usually one for the first people customers dealt with when it came to buying or selling new steel products or used scrap metal materials. Known for his dedication to the philosophy of “eight hours of work for eight hours of pay”, “Woody” and Horowitz Salvage would always be linked together as a part of the SMI-Texas family.

Even before retirement, “Woody” focused on different projects at home. Whether it was working on cars, doing wood or metal work or gardening, he always enjoyed finding ways to stay engaged.

“Woody” was a member of Greater Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Seguin, Texas. In addition to his duties as a Deacon, he also participated in Sunday School teaching, as well as filling in wherever needed and taking on any responsibilities when asked. He was well known in the community and his church.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 19th from 4pm to 8pm at Crenshaw Funeral Home Chapel in Seguin. The funeral will be held Saturday, May 20th at 11:00 am at Greater Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Seguin. Interment will follow at the McKeller Cemetery in Gonzales. Crenshaw Funeral Home of Seguin is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include: his wife Gladys M. Thomas of Seguin and sons Norwood H. Thomas, Junior of Seguin, and Mark F. Thomas of San Antonio. He is also survived by his sisters: Evelyn Ford of San Antonio, and Ophelia James of Corpus Christi, and brother Sammie Thomas of San Antonio, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, his Greater Pilgrim Rest church family, his Horowitz Salvage/ SMI-Texas work family, and lots of other friends many of whom fondly referred to him as “Woody” or “Uncle Bro (Bruh)”.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or the charity of one’s choice.

Study Finds High Levels Of Toxins In NYC Subway Stations (New York, NY) -- An NYU study has found “alarmingly high” levels of airborne toxins in New York City subway stations. Researchers took readings at 271 subway platforms back in December 2021 and found that pollution from airborne iron particles was 126 times higher than what you’d be exposed to outdoors. That’s a big concern because iron inhalation has been linked to autism, ADHD, cardiac and lung disease, plus cancer. NYU scientists said they recorded the most toxic particles at the 181st Street Station on the 1 line and found in on trains throughout the system. The MTA insists there’s nothing dangerous about subway air.

North Carolina’s Democratic Governor Vetoes GOP Abortion Bill (Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina’s Democratic governor is rejecting a GOP-backed abortion bill. Governor Roy Cooper applied his veto stamp to the legislation over the weekend at a public rally in Raleigh over the weekend. The measure would lower the window for abortions in the state from 20 weeks to 12 week and impose other restrictions as well. It’s unclear whether Republicans can muster enough votes in the North Carolina House and Senate to override Cooper’s veto.
