Local kids hope to be riding off on new bikes this weekend
Annual Badges, Bikes & Tykes set for this Saturday
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Local kids are invited to come out and play this weekend. Game booths, prizes, and a bicycle raffle are among the featured events for this year's Badges, Bikes & Tykes event. The event hosted by the Seguin Police Department and Seguin Fire Department will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Max Starcke Park. Looking forward to the event is Sarah Wallace, the community engagement officer with the Seguin Police Department. Wallace says the best part of it all is that everything is completely free.
"It's a completely free event. We supply the children with hot dogs and a drink and chips and all of that fun stuff while we are there and we have a ton of free games for them. All the booths at the event will also have free games set up and Seguin Animal Services will have some adoptable puppies for anyone who is interested," said Wallace.
Close to 100 bikes will also be raffled off that day. Wallace says being able to host the raffle and allow local kids to see emergency responders in a different light is what the event is all about. Bikes, pg. 3

WEEKEND EDITION
Too colorful for words, Steel Magnolias returns to Texas Theatre
(Seguin) –An elite team of local actresses will reunite on stage to launch a two-weekend performance schedule of Steel Magnolias. The theater production, as written by Robert Harling, will debut with its first performance this Friday at the historic Stephen & Mary Birch Texas Theatre.
After performing the show almost 11 years ago, Sheila Lucas, who portrays “Ouiser,” says the timing was again perfect for the cast to come together. Making up the solid cast with Lucas will be Lauren Bouquet, Pat Hoppe, Johanna Bain Johnson, Ivy Koehler Meehan, and Mary Jane Windle.
“These ladies and I have been wanting to work together for over a decade and the timing worked out and since Mary Jane’s son said, ‘I’ve never seen Steel Magnolias!’ That’s when Steve Tschoepe said ‘Oh, I guess we can do it again. I guess it’s time to do it again.’ It worked out. We’ve been maneuvering each other for two years to come upon this date and this grouping and this time frame to get this done and it has exceeded, I think, my expectations and I know all of theirs as well. We are having a great, great time,” said Lucas.
Of course, most remember the story as it unfolded in the 1989 film starring Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley Maclain, and Dolly Parton. Lucas says the story follows the bond of these women as they tackle one of life’s most difficult challenges.
“The show is truly a southern piece of grace. It’s six women who are best friends and they spill their guts to each other. They live with each other. They love each other.
They fuss with each other. It’s a true family of southern graciousness,” said Lucas.
Although the script follows in line with much of the film, cast members say there will still be some differences. Mary Jane Windle, who plays M’Lynn, elaborated on the play’s unique elements.
“The main difference, I think, is that the play takes place in the beauty shop. No exterior, and of course, the movie had the Easter egg hunt. It had the wedding. It had the church. It had men. We have no men,’ chimed all the cast members. “But you will see equity actor for the first time on stage,” said Windle.
The women couldn’t be more excited about having the opportunity to work together on this performance. Hoppe adds that
it’s a dream team (cast) and a dream come true for most of them.
“I suppose we started reading the script together about two months ago just a few times. We wanted to do it. We laughed the whole time. We cried. If the audience likes it as much as we do, you are in for a treat,” said Hoppe.
Show times are at 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday and again on May 26-27. Sunday matinees are also available at 2:30 p.m. this Sunday and Sunday, May 28.
Tickets are $15 for general admission or $25 for reserved seating. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Gift & Gourmet, the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce, Keepers Interiors, or online at thetexas.org.
The Texas Theatre is located at 425 N. Austin St.

Celebrating the life of Virginia King Bergeld Woods with an open house
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – Prior to her passing in February of 2022, 107-year-old Virginia King Bergfeld Woods was already setting into motion a plan to leave behind a gift that not only paid homage to her family's history, but to the history of Seguin. As a result and in lieu of a traditional funeral, Woods' family this weekend will be hosting a Memorial Open House of her historic home located at 920 E. Court St.
Sharing a bit more behind her mother's wishes is Janice Woods Windle, Seguin native and author of the best-selling book "True Women." The novel, later turned into a CBS TV miniseries, tells the story of her family's lineage in Texas, the Kings, and the Woods. Windle says it was her mom's loyalty to her family's deep history – a history that helped shape Seguin -that she believes drove her to share it with everyone.
"When she was 107 years old last year, I asked her what kind of a service would she like and she laughed and said, 'None. How about kind of a party? I think I would like the house to be open and have people come and see it and feel like it belongs to everybody' and she said 'No long prayers. No long poems. No dissertations read. No letters to the dead.' She had a long list of no, don't do it. But when she talked about it, she said just a come and go time where people can come in and see the things we have," said Windle.
Among those "things" will be storyboards filled with photos taken over the decades, Windle says the boards will be posted throughout the home for folks to read, enjoy, and maybe even to identify.
"My mother Virginia King Bergfeld Woods grew up in this house and the house had belonged to her great grandparents and the land under the house was originally a log cabin and then later, they built a farmhouse and then later, they went to the World's Fair and saw the beautiful columns which they put on the porch. So, the house has always followed the history of Seguin and the people who
Bikes, continued.
"It's just a great way for the police department and the fire department to interact with the children in the community and of course, the community members itself. We invite a lot of local businesses as well as local organizations such as the Guadalupe County Children's Advocacy Center, the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter just to name a very very few. We invite them all out there and just a real
were here had been an active part of the development of the town and so my mom saved everything. She saved all of the antiques, all of the photographs, everything relevant to our local history," said Windle.
Much of what has been preserved today throughout the city can be attributed to Woods's historical record-keeping and preservation efforts. Founder of the Seguin Conservation Society, Wood's career as a history teacher only solidified her continuing contributions to the community. Windle says it's no surprise that her mother wanted folks to come together again in celebration of the city she loved so much.
"Mom taught school at Mary B. Erskine School and several other schools for almost 35 years and then she was on the school board for five different terms – she was elected to. So, she had a keen interest in seeing people educated and people coming together," said Windle.
Woods was married to the late Wilton George Woods. Together, they had two children, Janice Woods Windle and Wilton Woods.
This weekend's Memorial Open House will be held Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., Rain or shine, the event will be held on a come-and-go-basis. Guests are asked to park along the streets surrounding the property. Access to the back of the home will also be made available.
great event to bring the community together and of course, super fun to be able to give like that to the children as well. Our PD and I know the fire department as well love hosting this event. We love being able to play a lot of the games with kids that we have there and it's just a real cool event especially when you see one of the kiddos winning a bicycle and how excited they get. It's super cool," said Wallace.
Each child in attendance will receive a free raffle ticket for a chance to take home a bike. More
importantly, she says you must be present to win.
"You will get a raffle ticket and just like any raffle, you have to pay attention to when your number is called. If you miss it when your number is called, then sadly that ticket is no good. It goes up to the age of 16 and we of course keep it by sizes that way a little one isn't winning a bike for a big kid," said Wallace.
All activities will be held under the large pavilion located on the east side of Max Starcke Park.

Marion High School’s Kade Murdoch Follows in the Steps of Bulldog Track Coach to Sign with Texas A&M-Kingsville
(Marion) -- On Wednesday, Marion High School student-athlete Kade Murdock signed a letter of intent to continue his track & field career at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Murdock, who throws the discus, follows in the footsteps of Marion field throwing coach Valerie Stoddard who is an alum of A&M-Kingsville. Stoddard, a Navarro High School grad, was an AllAmerican shot put thrower for the Javelina track team from 2013 to 2016. Murdock credited her in helping him select A&M-Kingsville.
“Coach Stoddard really kinda told me about their track program.” Murdock said. “And since I really want to take it to the next level, I know they are really competitive in their track program. So, she kinda really sold the deal for me.”
Murdock played tight end and defense end on the Marion High School football team this past fall in addition to competing in the discus for the Bulldog track team this spring. Marion boys track coach Cliff Hill, who also coached Murdock on the football team, says Murdock is a very competitive athlete with a strong work ethic.
“Kade has a different personality, a different work ethic than a lot of kids.” Hill said of Murdock. “He’s a man. He’s kinda like one of the guys and so to kind of have that relationship with him has been a lot of fun. He’s harder on himself than I could ever be on him and so reeling back that competitiveness a little sometimes has been good, but I am super excited for the opportunity he’s got.”
Murdock is already attending Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Javelina track & field team is coached by Ryan Dall. Dall has been the head track & field and cross country coach at A&M-Kingsville for the last 15 years.

The panel will decide whether the drug should remain available after a federal judge in Texas ordered a hold on mifepristone back in April. His ruling was stayed pending appeal.
Human DNA Can Now Be Pulled From Thin Air And Sequenced
(Gainesville, FL) -- A team of researchers from the University of Florida is showing it’s possible to collect human DNA from the air, sequence it, and match it to a specific person. The team from the University’s Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience and Sea Turtle Hospital was collecting DNA samples from turtle footprints as part of a separate study when they discovered they were also finding human DNA in the sand and surrounding water. They decided to study it further and collected DNA samples from several volunteers. The team was able to sequence the DNA and match it with the samples they previously obtained from recovered human DNA samples, DNA from the clinic animals, and animal viruses.
WMO Says World On Brink Of Global Warming Threshold
(Geneva) -- Scientists are predicting global warming will reach a new record over the next few years. Researchers at the World Meteorological Organization say there’s now a 66-percent chance that the Earth will pass a one-point-five Celsius global warming threshold between now and 2027. They say the chances are rising because of emissions from human activities and from the El Niño weather system expected this summer. Hitting the threshold means the world will have become nearly three degrees warmer, Fahrenheit, than it was during the pre-industrial levels of the mid-19th Century.
