Does your family qualify for some help with the grocery bill? Seguin ISD reminds some of its families to be on the lookout for future application for P-EBT funds By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – If your child was on free or reduced lunch this past school year, then you more than likely will qualify for some much-needed help with your grocery bill. Before they are officially out for summer, the Seguin ISD is giving its families a heads up on their eligibility to receive Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (PEBT) benefits to buy food from any retailer that accepts the Texas Lone Star Card.

While applying will be required, families who received SNAP benefits for the month of March 2020 and have children 5-18 years old as of May 17, 2020, do not need to apply for those children. Officials say no further action is required for those families.

Families with children up to 21 years old and who are certified to receive free or reduced-price meals during the 2019-20 school year will need to apply for P-EBT. Eligible families, the first week of June, will receive a school email with a link to the P-EBT application. SOLC offering summer camp, family memberships By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Although the Seguin ISD is wrapping up its school year, plans continue to be put into place for the fall. That’s why the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center is inviting you to spend your summer over at its 120-acre property. Whether its summer camps or family memberships, the local non-profit organization is gearing up for what it hopes will be another great season of enjoying the outdoors. Beth Trapp, the education coordinator at the SOLC, says first on its list is this year’s annual Summer Adventure Camp for local children. Campers will get to experience fishing, archery, canoeing and a ropes course. Trapp says after months of being quarantined, the group felt it was important to still offer the camp. "We do have a lot of space out here. We have nearly 120 acres and I know a lot of people are focused on the social distancing aspect. So, we do plan to have our groups spread out. Unfortunately, they've been kind of cooped up. Their schedules have completely changed around. They've been out of their normal schedules and we just want to make sure that we are still able to offer education, obviously have fun and we made the decision just because we think that we will be able to safely adhere to all the CDC recommendations as far as camp goes. We've been following closely with the state health services also and their recommendation and we feel like we can safely host this camp," said Trapp.

While most other summer camps have either cancelled or have drastically changed, Trapp says the SOLC will be offering six full weeks of fun activities. "We've actually had a few changes but all in all, it's similar to what we've hosted the past couple of years. We are hosting six weeks of summer camp. The first week begins on June 8 and the last week is July 20-24 so the 24th will be our last day. We do take a break that week between June 26 and July 6 for the Fourth of July holiday," said Trapp.

is Into the Wild. Week four is On Target. Week five is Wonders on Water so that is water education and Week six is Powerful Pollinator. A couple of changes that we have made is we are kind of shying away from the close activities that we will typically do as far as like some of the team building activities. You would get awfully close to your teammates so we are doing what we can to avoid certain activities," said Trapp. Second on the list at the SOLC is a wide range of year-round activities for individuals and families. Trapp says not only is a new bike trail the newest attraction but memberships are also available.

"The Seguin Outdoor Learning Center does have a mountain bike course that has become very popular recently. It's closed probably the majority of this week due to the storms that we have had come through. We have people traveling from Austin, Houston, everywhere to come to our mountain bike course and that is a suggested donation of $10 for each visit. We also offer family and individual memberships. Family memberships are $75 per year and individual are $50 and that would include coming out Monday through Saturdays from 9 to 3 p.m. hiking (and) we have catch and Photo Courtesy SOLC FB Page release fishing and typically, we offer members only events. Member days includes ropes Trapp says registration for one or all six weeks is currently days. We have the ziplining and team building. We have the fishing underway. Cost is $200 per week. A sibling discount is available events, hiking, canoeing, and kayaking. You can't come out and do that individually, but we can lead those activities on members only as well as for those who signup for repeat weeks. days," said Trapp. "We have a theme for each week. Week one is a Team Building ropes week. Week two is Conservation, Stewardship. Week three

Seguin names Guy Nowlin head boys basketball coach

(Seguin) - The transition should be smooth for the Seguin High School boys basketball team as it adjusts to a new head coach next season. Seguin athletic director Travis Bush announced the promotion of former assistant Guy Nowlin into the Matadors' head coaching position on Tuesday. Nowlin has been a teacher and coach in the Seguin ISD since 2007, and has spent the past four years as the JV boys basketball coach and top assistant to the recently retired Dwayne Gerlich. He has also served as the head coach of the Seguin boys and girls cross country teams. Nowlin graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. His teaching certifications include physical education, health, and

special education. Gerlich announced his retirement last week after 12 seasons as Seguin's head coach. In 2017, Nowlin assisted Gerlich in leading the Matadors to their first playoff win since 2005, and helped guide Seguin to an 18-15 record this past

Guy Nowlin season. Nowlin's JV team showed steady improvement over the course of the 2019-20 season, culminating in a 6-2 record in the second round of district play.

Anacleto’s occupation took the family from Texas to Mexico and back to Texas but somewhere in there she met her future husband, Jesus Vasquez. She married “Chuy” and in time, had four children. When Jesus was killed in an auto accident, Hope became a widow with four children under the age of 10. She had always had a strong faith, but now it was time to employ her name with full force. Hope began a very very hard life of being a widow with no job, a one room house next to her father-in-law, and an education that ended in 3rd grade with which to raise four children. But she was not alone. She had her husband’s cousins nearby, her sister Velia in San Antonio and brother Rodolfo in Seguin. She thanks all of them for helping her raise her kids. She never has taken credit for herself but gave the glory to God for sending her help. Always strong in faith, Hope was active at her church, Virgen de Guadalupe Catholic Church.

When the previous two children of Joaquina and Anacleto Ortiz died in infancy, the two decided that if the next child lived, and was a girl, they would name her Esperanza, which means

She was active in The Angels of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Cursillista group and the Guadalupanas as well as a long-time member of The Apostolic Movement of Schoenstatt.

CDC Says COVID-19 Antibody Tests Are Wrong Half The Time (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is now saying COVID-19 antibody tests are wrong half of the time. The agency made the revelation on its website saying the results from those tests should not be used to determine if a person can go back to work or to be allowed in a group setting. The CDC is also urging medical professionals to use the most error-free test that is available to them and added it might be necessary to test patients twice.

White House Pushes for States to Reopen Safely (Washington, DC) -- The White House says 42-percent of states in the U.S. are now under a ten-percent positivity rate for coronavirus cases. During a news briefing, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany [[ MACK-en-ay-nee ]] warned that everyone needs to "keep cognizant" of the recommendations from the CDC. This comes after photos from Memorial Day Weekend have gone viral of large crowds at beaches across the country.

Elkton Federal Correction Institution, which is near Canton, holds about 24-hundred inmates, and nine prisoners have died of COVID-19. Trump accused Governor Cooper of "acting very slowly and suspiciously." Trump added that the Republican Party needs to know if they can fill the Spectrum Center arena with people despite risks posed by the coronavirus pandemic. He said he does not want to hold it virtually or have a tiny amount of people in the arena. Trump said if Governor Cooper can't tell him very soon, the Party will have no choice but to hold it elsewhere.
