Summer reading FUN at Seguin Public Library

Athletes run into action following vehicle accident

(Seguin) – A true team of heroes is being applauded today after six local runners were not only at the right place at the right time but according to their coach did the right thing. Coach Ray Medrano says on Thursday evening, six of his Zion Hill runners were completing their daily training at Texas Lutheran University, when they quickly acted following a two-car collision at the corner of West Kingsbury Street and Fleming Drive.

Medrano tells the Seguin Daily News, “Without hesitation, the athletes raced towards the scene where two vehicles were damaged

beyond repair, and smoking profusely and could go up in flames at a moment's notice. With one vehicle having no visibility to the interior, the athletes split on all sides of the vehicles to help remove the driver and passenger from an SUV. With the driver clearly in shock, the athletes

attempted to make it clear to him what was happening and removed him. The passenger, a woman that was shedding tears did not want to be moved. The athletes helped her understand that her vehicle was up in smoke and may explode at any moment, and she then pleaded for them to help her.”

Upon asking them why they put their own lives at risk to help others, Medrano says the runners simply agreed and stated, “We would have rather had it explode, and we can never run again, then watch them blow up."

The Zion Hill runners credited

by their coach for acting as heroes include Jordan Avalos, Xavier Padron, Brandon Hernandez, Prince Medrano, Ramiro Galvan, Tucker Jones, and Aric Pinguelo.

Medrano says he is grateful that these runners encompass the moral compass of the local running program – Kindness, Integrity, Honesty and Integrity. He says he is proud to be their coach and is proud of the outstanding men they are.

Seguin Police say the accident occurred around 6:15 p.m. Thursday. The conditions of those involved in the accident have not been confirmed.

Downtown Seguin prepares for BIGGEST TRADITION

(Seguin) -- Soon classic cars, antique tractors, and floats will be making their way down Austin Street through downtown Seguin for the 2023 Biggest SmallTown Fourth of July Parade. The parade has consistently been named one of the best Seguin events by the community as over 8000 people attend to watch the over 150 floats celebrate America’s birthday.

The parade on July 4 at 10:00 a.m. is the culmination of Seguin’s Fourth of July celebrations which start on July 1 with Freedom Fiesta in Central Park, the Patriotic Concert on July 2, and Fireworks Fiesta on July 3.

“The Seguin Main Street Program has been producing the parade for over two decades now, but the parade has been a long-standing tradition for Seguin dating back for decades if not over a century,” said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB Director, “It truly is a great time for the community to gather and celebrate.”

All organizations, businesses, and individuals are invited to enter their own float into the parade. All parade floats should be decked out with red, white, and blue. For the safety of spectators, no items can be thrown from parade floats. If your entry includes people marching or walking, the float should also incorporate a vehicle for them to use if they need to take a break from walking. Finally, all floats should be kept family-friendly including any music from the entries.

Parade applications can be found online at www.

seguintexas.gov/fourthofjuly or at the Seguin Visitor Center at 116 North Camp Street. Applications are due to the Seguin Main Street office by June 19.

A few reminders for spectators as well. It is July in Texas, so be prepared for some summer heat. Bring your lawn chairs, beverages, sunscreen, umbrellas, and hats. When reserving a spot, do not block the sidewalk until the hour before the parade starts. After the parade ends, please clean up your location including any tape on the sidewalks.

“We hope everyone will come out to celebrate with us with either a parade entry or to be a spectator,” said Kramm, “Seguin truly shines during the Fourth of July holiday.”

Men’s Track & Field Closes Historic Season at NCAA Championships

ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 24 Texas Lutheran men’s track and field team ended the 2023 season, earning 7.5 total points on the national stage and totaling five All-Americans on Saturday.

In a season that saw Texas Lutheran earn its highest national rankings in program history, being ranked as high as number seven in the nation, Texas Lutheran’s five All-American finish is the best national showing for men’s track and field since 2018.

Texas Lutheran’s Saturday action began with a fourth place finish in the high jump from junior Gerrit Twitero (McQueeney/Seguin). Twitero, the school record holder in the high jump and a 2023 national qualifier in indoor and outdoor track and field, finished with a mark of 2.02m. Twitero capped his historic season by becoming the first All-American in the high jump in TLU’s NCAA history and earned the highest national finish in the high jump in school history.

After fighting over the course of two days for their spot in the event final, Texas Lutheran concluded their 2023 season with the 4x100m relay as Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen), Wyatt Wilson (New Braunfels/ New Braunfels), Bryce Powell-Chimene (Dayton/Dayton) and Elijah Jefferson (San Antonio/Construction Careers Academy) finished sixth

with a time of 41.03 seconds. The performance ranks as the second fastest time in the event championship in Texas history and the second time the 4x100 relay team has earned All-America status in TLU men’s track and field history (2018).

All five All-Americans earn the honor for the first time in their careers.

All-Americans:

Gerrit Twitero - 2.02m (high jump)

Weston Guzman - 41.03 seconds (4x100m relay)

Wyatt Wilson - 41.03 seconds (4x100m relay)

Bryce Powell-Chimene - 41.03 seconds (4x100m relay)
