Teatro to preserve, share stories of Our Town
(Seguin) - A vision to preserve some of the untold stories of Seguin and its people is now one day closer to becoming a reality thanks to a prestigious $50,000 national grant. Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin is celebrating its announcement of a $50,000 Our Town award from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The award will support Our TownSharing of People, Places, Culture, and Stories through Art Creation in Seguin.
Teatro Executive Director Dr. Yvonne De La Rosa says the award is one of 57 grants nationwide, totaling $4.1 million in funds that the NEA has approved in the Our Town category.
The category supports projects integrating arts, culture, and design activities into local efforts to strengthen and authentically engage communities, center equity, advance artful lives, and lay the groundwork for longterm systems change.
De La Rosa says their breath was taken away when learning that Teatro had been selected for
the very competitive grant. She says Seguin was also only one of three cities in the state to receive funding from the NEA.
She says they are especially excited to engage the community in conversations that will gather and share the stories of Seguin's communities and, in turn, will provide an avenue to create art projects that mirror the ethnicities in this community.
"We wanted to make sure that all of the stories of all of our communities were told. That included the Mexican-American community, the Tejanos that were here, the African-American community, as well as our indigenous brothers and sisters. That was something that I thought was very important because in our textbooks and also in what we teach our children, not all of that is always spoken even though we know that it was here. At Teatro, we've been told for 40 years, for many years, about the history of our area, and all of the time that our history was not being told to us... Teatro pg. 3

Seguin Fire Department kicks off Summer Fan Drive
(Seguin) -- The Seguin Fire Department is helping local residents beat the heat this summer.
Fire Chief Dale Skinner says the department this week begins the distribution of its portable fans to local needy and elderly residents.
For years, the department has focused on making sure that every household has some type of cooling equipment during the summer.
“I can only remember not having air conditioning in vehicles growing up myself. So, I don’t know that life but you would be amazed at the number of residents we have here in Seguin that do not have air conditioning at all in their home -something as simple as a 120 amp air volt window even. So, I’ve said it over the years that trying to go
to sleep when you are hot is almost impossible. So, that is one reason that we do this fan drive just a simple little breeze that is blowing on you can help keep you comfortable and can keep you from having a heat emergency such as heat exhaustion or stroke,” said Skinner.
He says this year’s summer fan drive is ready to get fans into the hands of those who need them.
“We will always accept donations for the fan drive. However, we do have a surplus of fans leftover from last year to be able to kick this season off, and in order for folks to be able to receive a fan and so that we can stretch our supply as long as we can, we request that it be folks that do not have air conditioning and
that they have not received a fan in the previous year and that they are a city resident,” said Skinner.
Skinner says the fire department can also always use box fan donations. He says there is definitely a need in this community.
“For the last couple of years, we’ve averaged around 60 or so fans that we were able to donate to residents and over the years, we have given out as many as 100 so the program is still needed in my opinion,” said Skinner.
Fans can be picked up and/ or donated between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Seguin Fire Administration Building located at 660 State Highway 46 South. The office can be reached by calling 830-401-2321.

Teatro, continued.
“ per se from our textbooks and maybe even from some of our teachers. But it was important for us to make sure that all of the people of this area were represented. So with this $50,000 grant, we are going to create through a community arts creation the telling of stories of all of the people here in Seguin," said De La Rosa.
De La Rosa says news of the grant was received following the recent death of her Mother, Vickie De La Rosa, one of the co-founders of the Teatro nonprofit organization. Despite the competitiveness of this national grant, she says her mother was adamant that the group would be receiving this funding. She says connecting the community, even more, has always been the idea behind this effort for her mother- a legacy she now leaves behind.
"This is actually the last grant I wrote with my mom and so when we sat down, we had this conversation about what did it look like and for me, it was a traveling exhibit to where it can move from location to location. This means it can move into the school. It can move into the bank. It can move into a public space so this is very valuable. This art creation is very valuable and so that it can travel throughout our city to tell the stories of the different people of Seguin," said De La Rosa.
De La Rosa says Teatro looks forward to working
together with Seguin citizens in documenting the town's cumulative history, which thanks to this traveling exhibit, will not only be shared locally and nationally but internationally as well.
"This includes three different paintings and/or mix media art forms, that will all come to fruition because it is a community project. This is something that we are going to reach out into the community for them to come and have sit downs with us and the artist, talk about the history of our town, bring in artifacts that the artist can look at and can tell a story about maybe that artifact that will then help the artist to create this community procreation of art," said De La Rosa.
In completing this project, Teatro will partner with the city of Seguin, Seguin Mainstreet, and the Seguin Public Library.
"This is an amazing accomplishment and well deserved! Teatro is a very important part of our community and this NEA Our Town grant will certainly be put to the best use," said Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen.
Teatro, again, looks forward to actively engaging with the community through community plastics (conversations) to capture these stories that will be at the center of the artist residency community cocreation of art. Opportunities for those conversations will be announced as soon as they are scheduled.
These art creations are set to be unveiled one by one throughout 2024-2025.

California Legislature Pushes Back On San Quentin Prison Makeover (Sacramento, CA) -- California legislators are pushing back on Governor Gavin Newsom’s bid to transform the infamous San Quentin Prison into a rehabilitation center. The state Assembly and Senate have questioned Newsom’s 360-million dollar proposal to reform the maximumsecurity prison into a health-focused and education facility. Critics have called the plan “unrealistic.” Last week, the Legislative Analyst’s Office said the proposal does not have a clear objective, lacks key information and that the proposed 2025 project deadline is “unnecessary and problematic.” The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation called the criticism “premature.”
Code Orange Air Quality (Memphis, TN) -- There’s an air quality alert in the Mid South. The Shelby County Health Department says the “Code Orange” impacts Shelby County as well at Crittenden County in Tennessee and Arkansas and DeSoto County, Mississippi. For older adults or people with respiratory issues, it is advised to limit your time outdoors. Prolonged exposure to the poor air quality could cause nose, eye, throat and lung irritation. In an attempt to keep people from driving, MATA has discounted its rides to 25-cents Monday.
Judge Bans Newspaper From Publishing Story (St. Louis, MO) -- A St. Louis City Circuit Court judge has barred the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper from publishing a story. It concerns material from a man’s mental health evaluation that has been deemed highly confidential. The judge says if the information is published, that would prevent the man from getting fair treatment in his trial where he’s accused of killing a police officer. Thomas Kinworthy allegedly shot Tamarris Bohannon to death nearly three years ago. When Officer Bohannon approached the home where Kinworthy was, he allegedly opened fire, killing the officer. Kinworthy was taken into custody after a long standoff.
Study Shows NJ Among Happiest in the US (Trenton, NJ) -- A scholarship search website has drawn up a list of the happiest states in the country -- based on factors such as employment, education and leisure activities -- and New Jersey ranks in the top five. The website called Scholaroo also looked as mental health, physical health and personal finance. It concluded Massachusetts and Illinois are the two happiest states in the country, followed by Connecticut -- and then, New Jersey. Specifically, Scholaroo singled out New Jersey for its low quit rate among residents with jobs and one of the highest rates of protection for LGBTQ youth.
