Seguin ISD campus to undergo transformation

Renovation plans officially underway for Barnes MS

(Seguin) – Barnes Middle School is next in line for a much-needed face-lift. Seguin ISD officials recently gathered with administrators and contractors for a special groundbreaking marking the beginning of the school’s expansion and renovation plans. The $25.5 million project was approved by voters in 2022. Helping to oversee the project is Florin Popa with pbGroup Architecture. Popa says the project will help the school district

align its middle schools while providing some much-needed elbow room at the local campus.

“The original school was built for two grades, 7th and 8th, and then they converted it from a junior high to a middle school so it’s three grades now. With the growth that is coming into this area, it’s obviously been affecting Barnes and Koennecke (Elementary School) and this area of the district more than others,” said Popa. Barnes, pg. 3

Adventure now underway at Seguin Public Library

Games, crafts, reading, live animals plus trivia all part of summer experience

(Seguin) – The Seguin Public Library is opening its doors to an array of activities for local families this summer season. The library has officially launched its annual Summer Reading Experience, themed “Adventure Begins at Your Library.”

This summer, the library invites readers of all ages to embark on a thrilling journey filled with books, activities, and events designed to inspire a love of reading and exploration. Most importantly, the reading experience is free.

Children’s events for ages 5-11 are set for every Thursday featuring a time traveling hot air balloon, with activities from different eras or places including “Ancient Egypt & African Deserts”, and “Medieval Times & Royalty” plus a visit featuring live animals from Happy Tails Entertainment on June 27th.

Teens ages 12 - 17 will have their own activities, including creative writing workshops, art and writing contests, and an After-Hours Cosplay Ball on June 21st at 6pm. Teen events also include Teen Tuesday every Tuesday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. with activities like video gaming, Junk Food Taste Tests, and a Retro Road Trip Escape Room on July 23rd at 3pm.

There are also plenty of activities and events for the adults. Some of those events include a Travel Trivia Night, Murder Mystery Party, Jigsaw Puzzle Competition, National Treasure Escape Room, Hot Air Balloon Painting Night, and Comedy Night.

Younger children’s story times will also continue throughout the summer, including Baby Time, Toddler

Time, Preschool and Family Storytimes.

All ages will also be encouraged to engage in reading experiences using Adventure Gameboards, with kids and teens eligible to earn free books. Plus, all age groups are eligible for grand prize drawings featuring prizes such as gift cards, LEGOs, books, camping gear and other special surprises.

This year’s Summer Experience wraps up with the library’s annual MiniCon on Saturday, Aug. 3 from noon to 4 pm. Meet Mari Mancusi, author of middle grade, young adult and new adult novels and former Emmy Award winning television news producer. Those in attendance will get to celebrate pop culture in the Artists Alley. They will also get to attend panels, gaming and cosplay.

“Our theme this year, ‘Adventure Begins at Your Library,’ aims to spark curiosity and encourage lifelong learning through the magic of stories and adventures,” said Silvia Christy, library director at Seguin Public Library. “We’re excited to offer a diverse range of programs that cater to all age groups, ensuring that everyone can find their own adventure at the library this summer. We also want to remind the community that library cards are free for Guadalupe County residents, so if you don’t have one yet…get on it!”

The Summer Reading Program is now underway and runs through Aug. 8th. Pre-registration is now open online to all community members. To sign up, visit www.library. seguintexas.gov. or stop by the library located at 313 W. Nolte St.

Barnes, continued.

Popa says the plan is to tackle the larger, interior components of the campus. That includes the cafeteria, library and fine arts department.

“The cafeteria and library were way undersized. That was another focus that the district wanted to take on. The cafeteria was locked in so there wasn’t a cost-effective way to expand the cafeteria outwards which would have been quicker and cheaper so the only way to expand the cafeteria would be to basically take the classrooms, the art room and the choir that are behind the original stage that we are going to be removing and we are going to cut it down and expand the cafeteria into as far back towards those classrooms and those classrooms, we will convert into the new stage which is going to be much bigger than the original stage,” said Popa.

The district, this past April, was able to finally put the finishing touches at A.J. Briesemeister Middle School after nearly two and a half years of construction. Although the work at Barnes won’t be as extensive, it will undergo a significant transformation -- upgrading the aging standards at the local campus.

“The scope is to expand the school by 12 classrooms. That’s basically taking the portables offline, displacing some classrooms throughout the campus, moving the art rooms so they can be more centrally located and

then adding to the fine arts which would bring it up to the same standards to AJB -- what we did at AJB.,” said Popa.

With the help of its contractor, the Koehler Company, crews hope to utilize much of the next two summers to construct much of the interior spaces. They say the less interruption for students and staff the better.

“Administrators were nice enough to say that they would work with the contractor and deal with a little more pain early so they can basically come back into their new facility and not have any contractors in their way. So, they are turning over the entire fine arts portion and moving some of those kids to the portables so the Koehler Company can go in and basically finish the stage in the fine arts area and the projected goal is to have the kids back into their new rooms in the fine arts by the end of the year, hopefully around the end of November,” said Popa.

Wrapping up the project at Barnes will be a muchneeded cuing line in the school parking lot. The campus over the years has struggled by not having an adequate drop off and pickup system. The plan according to Popa is to construct a cuing line for up to 100 cars on Barnes property, again similar to the one built at AJB. That project, however, won’t be tackled until next summer.

The renovation of Barnes is just one of several bond projects in the works for the Seguin ISD.

Kay, Leal Earn Rawlings Gold Glove Awards

SEGUIN, Texas -- Annie Kay (Sinton/ Sinton) and Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) of the Texas Lutheran softball team were announced as Rawlings Gold Glove Award recipients Thursday evening as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). TLU’s two selections are tied for the most Rawlings Gold Glove Award recipients among any program in the nation this year on any level.

The duo become the first two players in program history to receive the award. The top nine defensive players from all collegiate divisions (NCAA DI, NCAA DII, NCAA DIII, NAIA, NJCAA DI, NJCAA DII, NJCAA DIII, Cal JC, NWAC) are recognized with the Rawlings Gold Glove Award, presented by the NFCA. In 2022, the inaugural recipients from NCAA Division I were announced at the NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla. In 2023, the award expanded to include all the collegiate divisions. Honorees of the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, presented by the NFCA, are selected by the NFCA AllAmerica Committees.

Kay has been one of Division-III’s elite defenders since arriving on campus in 2023 as a freshman. The Sinton, Texas, utilized her speed

to have unlimited range in center field. The center fielder had one outfield assist on the year and 53 putouts, including a defensive showcase across the 2024 SCAC Tournament and 2024 Marshall, Texas Regional.

Leal led the TLU defense with 82 assists and was in on seven double plays while having a .984 fielding percentage. The seven double plays more than doubles her previous careerhigh. Leal also recorded 45 putouts from the shortstop position, only making two errors in 129 total chances.

Both Bulldogs were named to the AllSCAC First Team with Kay also garnering All-

West Region Second Team honors from the NFCA. Kay and Leal were key pieces to a TLU defense that once again found itself in the top five nationally, ranking fifth in NCAA DivisionIII with a .977 fielding percentage.

For more information on Texas Lutheran softball, follow the Bulldogs on Facebook (@ txlutheransoftball), Twitter (@TLUsoftball), and Instagram (@tlu_softball) and as always you can find updates on all Texas Lutheran athletics on tlubulldogs.com and all official TLU social media channels (@tluathletics on Twitter, @ tlu_athletics on Instagram and TikTok, and @ tlubulldogs on Facebook).

Twenty-Thousand

Percent Market Up In The

US

For Popular Weight

Loss

(New York, NY) -- Senator Bernie Sanders is criticizing Danish pharma giant Novo Nordisk for the high cost of its popular weight loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy. The company says the high list price at about one-thousand dollars for a month is a result of the complex and expensive U.S. health care system. After providing rebates to patients and paying fees to middlemen, they keep only 60-percent of the list price from Ozempic and Wegovy. Researchers at Yale University found the cost to manufacture a month’s supply of Ozempic is under five dollars. Sanders warns that these drugs could potentially bankrupt Medicare and Medicaid. Citing research from Vanderbilt University that it could cost over 150-billlion dollars a year for Medicare to cover weight loss drugs.

Democrats Launch $100M Abortion Rights Campaign To Take House Majority (Washington, DC) -- Democrats are putting abortion rights front-and-center as they seek to take the House in November. The party’s House Majority Pac is launching a 100-million dollar advertising and voter mobilization campaign focused on abortion in swing districts across the country. Democrats are leaning into the issue as states across the country have rolled back abortion access following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022. President Biden has repeatedly blamed his political rival Donald Trump for the abortion restrictions across the country.

Gillibrand Leads Senate Effort To Protect Communities From Lead Poisoning

(Washington, DC) -- Senator Kirstin Gillibrand is leading a U.S. Senate effort to protect communities from lead poisoning. The New York Democrat is heading a group of 19 senators who are demanding more “robust” federal funding for the EPA’s lead-based paint inspection and abatement programs. She’s written to Jeff Merkley, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Environment saying that despite a 90-percent decline in lead blood levels since the mid-70s, lead poisoning continues to pose a serious threat to children in older homes. It can lower IQ and cause behavior and learning difficulties.
