Father-Daughter duo set to take the stage
(Seguin) -- Making their debut in the Central Park Summer Concert Series is Runnin’ on MT. Their performance will be on Sunday, June 9 from 7:00 to 8:30 in Central Park. The father daughter duo has been performing together for thirty plus years and have been a popular act at venues throughout Seguin.
The duo performs a variety of music and have traveled all over the United States performing as a full band and as the father-daughter duo.
“Since relocating from the Valley to Seguin, we have been performing only as the duo,” said Randy Main, the father of the duo, “We play a variety of music including blues, country, classic rock, southern rock, and a little bit of pop.”
Not only will they play covers of popular music, but they will also be performing some of their originals.
“I released my first single with two originals in 1979,” said Main, “And have released 30 singles since then. We will play six to eight singles during our set.”
The concert series will feature musical performances on every Sunday in June, including Gacho Sol and the San Antonio Symphonic Band.
Wiggle Waggle, Any Which Way, Seguin Area Youth Leadership Academy, and the Girl Scouts will be selling food and drinks. The concerts will be on Sundays starting at 7:00 p.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m. The family-friendly concerts are free and offer something for almost every musical taste. Bring a chair or blanket, sit back, relax, and enjoy!
Generous donations were received from local businesses, industries, and individuals. The Concert Series is presented by Niagara Bottling, LLC. Additional sponsors are Alamo Group, Anders Pierce Realty, CMC Steel Texas, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, GVEC, the Koehler Company, Seguin Electric Company, Starcke Furniture, Tri-County A/C & Heating LLC, and City of Seguin Main Street Program. Get ready to jump in vehicles for annual Raffle Run
Child Welfare Board to host annual fundraiser
(Seguin) – A drive around Seguin and Guadalupe County this weekend might just result in you taking home some great prizes. Registration is now underway for the annual Guadalupe County Child Welfare Board Raffle Run.
GCCWB Board President Diane Glover says this marks the fourth year that the non-profit group has hosted the event thanks in partnership with several businesses.
Like that of a poker run, Glover says this event, which keeps folks cool and comfortable in their own vehicles, not only is fun but supports the group that helps to oversee the needs of abused and neglected children who are in CPS custody.
"They will actually go around to eight designated stops that we have around Seguin and Guadalupe County and once they are registered,
they will have a wristband and they will collect a raffle ticket from the eight stops for a chance to win certain items that are assigned at each stop. So, they can pick and choose items 1, 3 and 7 -- if they want to try go and win those, then they will go to those spots or if they can choose all eight of them and for a chance to win all of those. Raffle, pg. 3
Cleanup, continued.
Davila reminds residents that there will be no entry access from th frontage road and says all vehicles must enter the yard from Austin Street.
“If you are coming from the Seguin area and traveling north Austin Street like you are going over to Vitesco, you are going to take a left on North Guadalupe Street and that road loops around into the Road & Bridge over by the Sheriff’s Department. So, you are just going to wait in that long road line there in order to come into the Road & Bridge yard and then, they are going to exit you onto the frontage road. So, we are blocking off traffic so that can be the ease of people leaving the area to get on the frontage road headed West,” said Davila.
Upon entering, Davila says things should be smooth. Plus, work crews will be on hand to do all the heavy lifting.
“It’s a drive through so once you come off that North Guadalupe Street, you are going to drive into the Road & Bridge. Again, you will be directed into the Road & Bridge yard. If you have tires, you are going to go in one direction. If you have regular garbage and debris, you are going to go into another section. Those that have larger items like the furniture in bulk that need to be thrown into the larger bins, then those are going to go in another direction. So, you are going to stay in your vehicle and just drive through. They will direct you and then they will help you dispose of those items by getting them out of your vehicle,” said Davila.
While most things like trash, junk, appliances and dry paint will be accepted, there are definite items that will

They drive around and collect raffle tickets from the volunteer that sits at that spot," said Glover.
Glover says the fundraiser is open to anyone with street legal vehicles. This includes cars, trucks, Jeeps and motorcycles.
Designated Raffle Fun Stop locations include the 1117 Smokehouse & Saloon; Big Easy Saloon in Kingsbury; Blue Lotus Winery; Grain Bin Café; Olmos Icehouse; Schultz Saloon, Seguin Brewing and Windmill Farm Winery.
Glover says thanks to several donors, participants will have plenty of great prizes in which they can try their luck at winning.
"We will begin registration at 9:30 in the morning. It goes from 9:30 to 11:30. After 11:30, they are turned loose to start making the stops and then at 3 o'clock, the last ticket will be handed out and all of the volunteers and participants are

Officials say residents will also be allowed to get rid of tires less than 19.5 inches without rims. They will be limited to four per vehicle.

supposed to head back to Starcke Park where we will put all the raffle tickets in the bucket for whichever one stop they went to and they will also have chances to purchase tickets for other items. We will serve our meal and do the raffle drawing and everybody should be out of there by 4-4:30 p.m.," said Glover. The cost to participate is $30 per driver. The price includes a meal
plus a chance of winning a 50/50 drawing. Passengers who wish to participate will be charged $20. This includes a meal ticket.
Those wishing to register in advance are encouraged to visit gccwb.org. Prize donations are also still needed. Those looking to donate a prize are asked to visit the website or contact Glover via email at dianeglover@gvec.net.

Q:
With temperatures already sky high, what types of plants can stand the heat?
A: The plants I noticed blooming around Memorial Day weekend that looked good in Seguin (if you’ve been keeping them watered) were vinca, coleus, lantana, and salvias. Other plants included Gregg’s Blue Mist, Texas Superstar roses, petunias, zinnias, Esperanza, and Firebush. You might be interested in checking the Internet under texassuperstar.com. It is a great site and seems to have been developed by partners Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas Department of Agriculture, and Texas Nursery and Landscape Association. You will receive plenty of information on tough Texas plants from legitimate information sources.
Q: The heat is bringing a lot of critters to my yard. My water containers empty fast, and the small pears on my Warren are being eaten by squirrels. What can I do?
A: Fill your birdbaths and other containers frequently. I notice my water lily containers are losing a lot of water to evaporation (and probably raccoons). The pear situation is a problem. The Internet suggests netting and for a 25 foot high tree that is not practical. Another suggestion is coyote urine around the trunk. Since squirrels can climb into the tree from neighboring trees or off of nearby buildings, I don’t think that urine on the trunk will do much good. We will just hope that these are friendly squirrels who
are willing to share with you. An old time gardener once said that when you plant, plant one for you and one for the animals.
If your tomatoes are being pecked, you can pick them early as soon as the bottom or blossom end of the tomato turns from green to white with a touch of red according to Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac. I bring mine in the house the minute they start to turn.
Q: My irrigation system is not working at the moment and I am worried about my trees. How is one supposed to water a tree?
A: Welsh reminds us that the feeding root system of a tree is at the drip line which is the area directly below the outermost reaches of the tree branches. So when you water, move a slow running hose on the ground around the drip line until each area is wet to a depth of about 10 inches. I have actually used buckets with ¼ inch holes punched around the bottom which I filled with water and placed along the drip line of the tree. And when your irrigation system gets fixed, be sure that the sprinkler heads are not wetting your driveway or sidewalk.
Remember that you should have raised the mowing height of your lawn mower for the summer. Another helpful hint for the hot summer is to remove weeds from your lawn and beds because they compete for the water. And, of course, water your lawn and garden between sundown and sunrise. The wind is lower and the temperature is lower.
