City of Seguin social media campaign earns top honors

(Seguin) -- Thanks to Seguin’s social media presence, people all across the state of Texas are apparently keeping tabs on what’s going on in the city and they are liking what they see.

The city’s Public Information Office, which under the leadership of Public Information Officer Jennifer Sourdellia, has brought home top honors for its planned media campaign that urged folks to vote in the Niagara “Perk Your Park” Community Outreach contest.

Winning the contest landed the city $75,000, which was put towards new equipment at the recently opened Kids Kingdom playground in Max Starcke Park.

The award for the media campaign was recently presented to the city at the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers Conference.

Seguin’s campaign was chosen as one of three finalists and earned second place in the category for Best Planned Social Media Campaign by a city with a population less than 50,000.

Guadalupe County raises awareness on elder abuse in local community

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County is empowering all residents to better protect one of its most vulnerable groups of citizens, our elders. Elder Abuse Awareness Month in June works to raise more protection for the thousands of seniors who in Texas fall victim to abuse, neglect and financial exploitation.

In addition to its seniors, the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court is also raising awareness on the rising number of cases of abuse involving adults with disabilities.

Bringing forth the statistics locally is Sabrina Nunez, the supervisor with the Adult Protective Services for Guadalupe County. Nunez recently shared the issue of elder abuse here locally with members of the commissioners court.

“In 2023, the staff of Guadalupe County Adult Protective Services received 572 intake reports. We completed 379 investigations of

abuse, neglect or exploitation. In a society that values the just treatment of all people, Elder Abuse Awareness Month reminds us that elder abuse has implications for all of us. It is so important to find the right solutions to it. This year, APS launched an incentive, ‘Partnering to Protect.’ This is designed to foster stronger effective collaborations within the community across the state, “ said Nunez.

In 2023, abuse affected more than 120,069 older adults and people with disabilities in the state of Texas.

County officials say abuse against older adults and people with disabilities is grossly underreported due to social stigma, embarrassment and fear. They say it impacts both men and women of all income and ability levels plus in all cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Nunez says she applauds the county for working to strengthen

all efforts in the prevention and reporting of elder abuse.

“Adult Protective Services and the South Texas APS Community Board will remain focused on raising awareness. We would like to express our gratitude to the Seguin Police Department, to the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, our probate courts and our district courts for this continued support in helping APS carry out our mission which is to protect older adults and adults with disabilities. It’s through these collaborative efforts that we can form public and private partnerships to identify where stronger supports are needed and where existing connections must be reinforced as an essential step towards defending our community against elder abuse,” said Nunez.

Abuse of a senior who is not in a health care facility can be reported to Adult Protective Services at 800252-5400.

Honors, continued.

Thrilled by the statewide recognition is Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen.

Dodgen says the six-week campaign, which included a series of social media posts and videos, was instrumental in securing 30,000 of the 80,000 total votes received in the national contest.

“Last year, there were like over 100 awards. This year, there were over 650 applicants for different areas and so I know that Jennifer submitted for I think a total of three but the category that we won in was a Planned Campaign for Under 50,000 population and we got second place and out of many many applicants. The judges really really liked what we did because it was very different. It was unique,” said Dodgen.

Dodgen says Sourdellia is credited for not only putting the plan together, but also helping to make it all happen.

“Jennifer did it all. Jennifer set all of this up. She was the one who put it all together and then actually made it happen and continually reminded us and told us that we needed to go out and vote -- that we needed to make our vote count and we won. We won out of all the state of Texas,” said Dodgen.

Also being recognized at the awards conference was 7-year-old Houston Larson, of Seguin, who became the face of the overall campaign for the online contest.

Teaming up with his father Chris Larson, of Blue Horizon Media, Dodgen says Houston was able to generate even more excitement for the contest.

“I think using Houston was brilliant. There were people in the room that got their picture taken with him because they knew who he was. They had seen the videos. They’ve seen the Facebook posts or the social media posts

Making history readily available

Diving into Seguin's history is as simple as looking up. The Seguin Heritage Museum shows off its own sponsored Historical Markers in downtown Seguin. The banners are attached to light poles. The non-profit museum continues with the program which allows community members the chance to purchase a banner noting the local history of their choice. and so he’s the cutest thing. He was so good. He sat over three hours of awards. Bless his little heart. I personally believe that Jennifer wrote the copy, some of it, but he really ad-libbed and I think we saw the excitement that he had for what was to come and we got to live a little bit vicariously through him and see how excited the kids were going to be to have some of these things, to have some new equipment in the park. He is just a natural. He’s very articulate. He’s very poised and he loved doing it and what he said to me was ‘people know who I am Donna. People know who I am now,” said Dodgen.

Sourdellia says her office is not only proud of the award but of the team that it took to make it all happen.

“This campaign, it was the whole community and this win is a win for Seguin. Not necessarily a win for my office but this is a big win for the community,” said Sourdellia. “

The award by the statewide organization helped to officially wrap up the city’s overall win of the Niagara Perk Your Park Contest.

That’s after the new playground was officially open to the public at the end of May.

Ella Meier, age 91 of Seguin passed away to her heavenly home on June 9, 2024. Ella was born June 8, 1933 in Marion, Texas to Julius and Ida (Zimmermann) Bulgrin.

She was united in marriage to Edwin Meier Jr. in 1952. The young couple’s aspiration to purchase a farm was successful, but not without sacrifice and struggles.

During these times, money was limited, but a strong work ethic and integrity made this dream come true. Ella was a steadfast woman of perseverance.

This proud accomplishment lived on in Ella’s heart until the very end.

Ella retired from Hexcel Corporation after 35 years of service. Ella’s enjoyment of meeting new people and not wanting idle time, motivated her to seek other employment opportunities. During the years in various duties, whether paid or volunteered, she met so many new people and enjoyed reconnecting with friends of the past. Her cherished 1952 black Chevrolet truck also gained her much attention and admiration from

many. Most of all her baking skills were unsurpassed and shared with many. Her greatest hobby included gardening many vegetables in her beloved garden and giving out produce to family and friends. Even after many years have passed, the memory of those treats lingers with all her special recipients.

Ella is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Edwin Meier, Jr. and sister, Rosa Schwarzlose.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Gawlik and husband, Thomas; grandchildren, Jeremy Meier, Tyler Gawlik, Kailey Gawlik; great-grandchildren, Lukas, Jordyn, Alena, Alexa, Makenna, and Emery; several nieces; and many other friends and loving family members. Ella leaves behind her best companion Buddy who was always by her side to the end.

A heartful appreciation is extended to Susanna Alcala and her caregivers Veronica Alcala and Maria Ortega, for the supportive foundation given to honor Ella’s wish to remain in her home.

Private graveside services and interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Guadalupe County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1593, Seguin, Texas 78155.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155.

Senate Panel Finds Child Abuse At Residential Treatment Centers

It reported “rampant civil rights violations.”

(Austin, TX) -- Texas and Montana are suing the Biden administration over new LGBT health protections. The new law would prohibit state Medicaid from banning gender-affirming care. On Tuesday, Texas and Montana filed lawsuits asking for the law to be vacated. The suit argues the rule is an unconstitutional attempt to override state law.

Drug Shortages At All-Time High

(Washington, DC) -- Drug shortages are at an all-time high. The first quarter of this year saw the United States’ highest number ever of ongoing shortages, with 323 drugs in a deficit. That’s according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists data, which started tracking the numbers in 2001. Those drugs include The chemotherapy agents and antibiotics. Manufacturers attribute shortages to issues with manufacturing and supply chain problems. The Drug Information Service’s definition of a drug shortage is broader than the one used by the FDA.
