Seguin ISD takes a look at potential plans for the 2020-2021 school year Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says the idea behind the task force is to lay out all possible options in which to safely educate students across the district.

COVID-19 cases up slightly across the area UPDATE By Darren Dunn
city limits that might make some of our numbers go up in the future but we are doing very very well compared to some other surrounding communities as well -- as a lot of businesses in San Marcos, New Braunfels have had to close down because of items like this and having positive cases with some of their businesses," said Parker.
(Seguin) -- There's recently been an uptick in the number of COVID-19 cases in Guadalupe County, and some surrounding areas. Seguin City Manager Steve Parker provided the Seguin City Council with an update on the latest (Tuesday) local COVID-19 statistics. “At the last meeting on June 2, we had 141 cases in Guadalupe County. We are up to 203 now. We’ve increased cases in the city of Seguin from 24 to 36. Twenty-seven of those have recovered which leaves us nine as of this morning but we just got word that one of those has fallen off. So, we only have eight cases in the city of Seguin. But surrounding communities are seeing an uptick in the number of cases and some of the cases and some of the cases that we have on our list are actually from households where there are multiple people in the household. We have two people hospitalized at GRMC,” said Parker.
Parker says there may be some fluctuations in the city's numbers based on the reporting. Despite the slight increase, Parker says the change has been more and more gradual than some of the growth in cases that have been reported in some neighboring communities. “Since June 10, they’ve actually had 25 people test positive for COVID in the 78155 number so there is either some more coming in or there are some in the regional area that is not in the
Parker's presentation came after the governor made his own coronavirus address earlier in the day Tuesday. Governor Greg Abbott says COVID-19 hospitalizations are rising in Texas but called the increase "manageable." The governor addressed the rise in cases since the start of the month during a press conference yesterday, stating that some people are not taking proper precautions when it comes to the virus. Abbott said hospital capacity remains plentiful throughout the state and urged Texans to wear masks and practice social distancing.
Seguin ISD Task Force for Reopening School shares latest plans, challenges SEGUIN ISD, continued from page 1
Like transportation, Hoffmann says how it will provide meals to students is also another hurdle that the task force will have to figure out.
“We have teachers who have young kids and many are in the district. That is something we have to think about. We have to think about parents who may not want to send their kids to school. We have parents who may want to send their kids to school five days a week due to their own personal job obligations. Again, there are a lot of scenarios right now. Not anyone is better than the other one. I think from our standpoint and as far as our community’s standpoint because there are so many possibilities out there right now,” said Hoffmann.
“We are also looking at what our child nutrition meal service will look like as well. We may be feeding children in their classrooms as opposed to cafeterias where again, that concentrates big groups of kids for meals during the day so that’s another scenario that we’re going to have to figure out,” said Hoffmann. As for masks, Hoffmann says the Texas Education Agency Commissioner during a recent online Again, Hoffmann says the Task Force for Reopening conference with districts said that they would not be Schools has been created to look at and explore the required for students. However, Hoffmann says ideas that not only face the Seguin ISD but districts things could always change and that’s why it’s all over. He says it’s important that districts layout important for the Seguin ISD to be ready. The these options until further guidance is provided to Seguin ISD Task Force for Reopening Schools will them and until they understand the state’s full continue to meet throughout the summer. He says having such plans will be vital adjustments and mandates by the state will also to not only the families that they serve but to district continue to be developed into a proposed plan for employees as well. the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

As Florida COVID-19 test numbers rise, the NBA prepares for Disney (Orlando, FL) AP -- The rate of positive coronavirus tests in the Orlando, Florida, area has been soaring in recent days. The NBA hopes that doesn't matter. After spending weeks on putting together an incredibly elaborate series of health and safety protocols - the word ''testing'' appears 282 times in the document - the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association believe they have done what is necessary to keep the 22 teams and others who will be part of the season restart at the Disney campus near Orlando next month safe and healthy.
But by following strict rules - including regular testing, no leaving the Disney campus without returning to quarantine, no unauthorized guests, no family members even being permitted to arrive until late August and, though this didn't likely have to be said, no spitting on the court - the NBA and the NBPA hope the risk is minimal as teams prepare for a Disney stay that could exceed three months for the teams that make the NBA Finals.
''I am optimistic about the NBA's return to play policies and procedures,'' Denver coach Michael Malone, who found out last month that he had already beaten COVID-19 after an antibody test showed he had the virus. ''They are going to do whatever it takes to make this the safest environment as possible. There are no guarantees and there will be a risk, but I feel confident in the measures to be taken pre-Orlando and once in Orlando.''
DeSantis has said Florida's rising numbers reflects more testing and other factors, though the percentage of positive tests is also significantly higher than was the case just a couple weeks ago across the state and in the Orlando area.

NBA Players Must Tell Teams Next Week If They Don't Plan To Play In Restart
(Undated) -- NBA players opting not to participate in the season restart in Orlando are to notify their teams by a week from today, according to a league memo obtained by Shams Charania of The Athletic. The memo stated every player has the right to choose not to return. The league has approved a plan to resume play with 22 teams on July 30th without fans on Disney properties. Several players have balked at returning, claiming it would distract from protests against racial injustice and police brutality. Letter To The Editor Re: Seguin ISD CEP Decision is Appreciated I appreciate the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees supporting the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) which would allow free meals for all students in the program. I first brought CEP to the attention of the Board and Administration during public comment in July 2016. We had a different leadership then and not much attention was given to the issue. After the election of new board members, the appointment of Cinde Thomas-Jimenez as Board President, and the passage of legislation allowing school boards to address issues with school lunches, I brought CEP to the attention of the board president. I met with Mrs. Thomas-Jimenez in September of 2017 to discuss ending lunch shaming by having the board adopt a new policy that would extend the grace period or payment amount to allow students to continue eating a "hot lunch" and not have it tossed and replaced with a sack lunch. I also discussed the option of avoiding this altogether by adopting CEP.
Two months later, the board adopted a new policy that would end lunch shaming in our schools. What's more, in January 2018, the Board had a workshop to discuss CEP with administration. While no action was taken at the time, the issue still remained a priority for future review. Moving forward with CEP would not have been possible without the leadership and commitment of Cinde Thomas-Jimenez to do what is in the best interest of our students and our community. Making this decision will ensure that students don't have to worry about having money in their account and it saves parents with one child at an elementary campus $478 per year. As many continue to recover from the economic impacts due to the coronavirus pandemic, this decision provides much relief to many in our community. Thank you Seguin ISD Board of Trustees and Dr. Matthew Gutierrez for doing what's right for our community. Luis J. Moreno Parent of Seguin ISD Student

New Study On Inflammatory Syndrome In Kids (New Hyde Park, NY) -- A new study is shedding light on Inflammatory Syndrome associated with COVID-19 in children. The study looked at 33 children at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York. Researchers found more than half of the patients were boys, with an average age of eight-years-old. Nearly four out of ten were obese. More than two-hundred children in the state have contracted the syndrome and three have died.
Coronavirus Spreading Through Toilets (Undated) -- Make sure to close the toilet lid before flushing or you could risk exposing yourself to coronavirus. A study published Tuesday in the journal Physics of Fluids found that when a toilet is flushed it creates "airflow vortices" thats can carry airborne particles several feet above the bowl. These toilet plumes also have the potential to carry coronavirus as studies have show this type of virus often hangs around in fecal matter. Health officials recommend cleaning the toilet seat before using it and always wash your hands after.

Scientists Say Steroid May Save Lives Of COVID-19 Patients
(Oxford, England) -- Scientists are hailing a steroid treatment as a major breakthrough in the fight against COVID-19. Trial results show Dexamethasone [[ dek-suh-MEH-thuhsown ]] is the first drug to reduce death rates by about a third in the most severely ill coronavirus patients. The cheap and widely used steroid reduces inflammation. Researchers say it should be immediately used as standard care in patients who have severe cases. More than 438-thousand people have died worldwide of COVID-19, including 116-thousand people in the U.S.
Diabetes Increases Danger Of COVID-19
(New York, NY) -- Diabetes can contribute to the underlying medical conditions which make COVID-19 particularly dangerous. Dr. Aaron Kowalski heads the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and says patients need to be more vigilant than ever during the ongoing pandemic. While Dr. Kowalski said it doesn't appear that having diabetes makes a person more susceptible to COVID-19, high blood sugar can make the illness especially dangerous. He also says there's evidence that COVID-19 reduces the effectiveness of life-saving insulin.
