12-year-old boy drowns in Guadalupe River
(Seguin) -- The community is still reeling today from the news of a drowning of a 12-year old boy.
City of Seguin officials say the drowning occurred around 9:45 a.m. Monday in the 400 block of River Road. The vacation rental home is located in the unincorporated portion of Guadalupe County, but the city’s fire department responded to the call.
According to reports, five boys visiting the area with a church group were swimming in the Guadalupe River. That’s when the 12-year old boy
went underwater and did not resurface. The boy was not wearing a life vest.
Texas game wardens, the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, STAR Flight from Austin, and a dive team from the New Braunfels Fire Department assisted with the search and recovery of the boy’s body. He was located and pulled from the water about 1:15 Monday afternoon.
The boy’s family was notified, but his name is not being released because he is a minor.
The boy was said to be from the South Texas area.
Cooking up stories of history
Juneteenth Cookbook available for order at local bookstore
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera(Seguin) -- The recipe for preserving and celebrating history with our children and grandchildren might just begin with a cookbook.
This Juneteenth, local families are encouraged to stop by Pecantown Books & Brews for their copy of The Juneteenth Cookbook written by Author Alliah Agostini. Agostini, this spring made the trip from New Jersey to the local bookstore in hopes of promoting the cookbook designed for the youngest of generations.
During her visit, Agostini, who is also known for her original work, the Juneteenth Story, explained how this latest addition works to put history and tradition into action.
"The Juneteenth Cookbook is really an opportunity for families to celebrate Juneteenth and to bring the holiday to life. So, the Juneteenth Story tells about the history of the holiday, how it originated and how it developed and the Juneteenth Cookbook itself has a lot of recipes and activities and ways to really bring history to life through play which I think is important for kids and families too," said Agostini.
She says one of the most important aspects of the book is that it is multi-generational and works to further preserve these traditions.
"So, it's important to my family. Tremendously important that we have so many culinary traditions especially in the African-American community and I
want to make sure that we could celebrate and bring those to life in a way that is coachable for kids. There's so many kids that love to cook and they like to cook with their families in the kitchen too and so this is a really great starting point for them to make real recipes with real food that taste good too but then there's also things that they can explore on their own. So it's important to have both of those dynamics," said Agostini.
As for the recipes, Agostini says they are designed so that navigating throughout the kitchen is not only easy but ends up being delicious.

Seguin invited over for lunch
during NB
Juneteenth Jubilee
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera(Seguin) -- Today's observance of the Juneteenth Holiday will bring both the communities of Seguin and New Braunfels together.
Seats are still available for today's New Braunfels Juneteenth Jubilee 2024. The luncheon-style event will be held from 10 a.m. to
1 p.m. at the VFW Post 7110 in New Braunfels. George Green is leading the effort. For almost the last decade, Green has been hosting the event. Green says the occasion, of course, marks the federal holiday commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

History of Seguin during Juneteenth Presentation at
local bookstore to share more
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera(Seguin) -- A local bookstore is inviting folks over tonight for a conversation and an opportunity to learn. Pecantown Books & Brews will host a Juneteenth: A Day of Freedom presentation.
Owner Tess Coody Anders says the presentation will spotlight a pair of individuals who will help wrap up today's Juneteenth observance by diving into Seguin's own role during this particular time in history.
"We are excited that we will have Paula King Harper who is the president of the Wilson Pottery Foundation, and a fifth generation dependent of Hiram Wilson in conversation with Darren Dunn with KWED about the history of the Wilson brothers, the family, their pottery business and the implications of Juneteenth to their success. It situates Seguin in the historical context of Juneteenth and I think it will be a really interesting conversation and part of what we are all about at Pecantown is fostering what we call productive collisions and so
Cooking, continued.
"My grandmother's potato salad recipe is actually in there. It's the one that I grew up eating and I even made sure it included an illustration of the bowl that she would always put it into too. That was important to me especially. The Mac 'n' Please -that's
what better way for us to celebrate Juneteenth then to recognize the importance of the day then through a conversation with an author, a historian and our own Darren Dunn," said Coody-Anders.
According to the Wilson Pottery Foundation, "Hiram, James and Wallace Wilson were slaves who, in 1856, were brought to the small community of Capote outside of Seguin. After their arrival, they learned pottery making skills while assisting their slave owner in a successful pottery business." During the post-slavery era, following the Civil War, they were granted some land and equipment by their slave owner -- essentially making them possibly the first black entrepreneurs in the state of Texas.
Today's event is free, however, guests will be encouraged to celebrate with food, drink and book specials.
The bookstore is located at 212 S. Camp St. The presentation gets underway at 5 p.m.
our version of mac and cheese. It's super delicious. It's very flavorable. From a dessert perspective, the red velvet ice cream sandwiches are everything so it's like a red velvet cookie with a cream cheese ice cream in between. It's super tasty. So, some of these recipes are really simple and healthy and delicious and
the watermelon snow cups are one of them. All it requires is freezing watermelon and shredding it with a grater and you can sprinkle a little Tajin on it too for a little extra flavor and it's super easy. I can talk about all these recipes all day long," said Agostini. Cooking, pg. 4
Cooking, continued.
Agostini says she turned to writing soon after she became a mom. She says observances such as Juneteenth tend to take on a whole different meaning especially when littles are involved.
"I was doing marketing, consulting before then and during the pandemic, of course, you could evaluate what you are working on and I really went full steam ahead with writing at that point. I'm writing full-time. I have four books out now. So Juneteenth Cookbook is my fourth book and then I have about eight more that are coming in the future, mostly picture books and early readers too. But all of them really celebrate joy and truth and it really primarily focuses on illuminating characters of color especially black folks because I just want to make sure families see us for who we are and that kids can also see themselves in books too," said Agostini.
A limited number of books are currently available for purchase at the local book store. However, orders for both The Juneteenth Cookbook and the Juneteenth Story are currently being accepted. Cost for the cookbook is $19.99 while the Juneteenth Story ranges between $9.99 and $18.99.

Jubilee, continued.
The holiday's name pairs June and "nineteenth," as it was on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. It should also be noted that the state of Texas was also the first state to declare Juneteenth as an official holiday.
This knowledge of history is what Green says initially inspired the hosting of this Jubilee.
"We were born and raised here in New Braunfels and I graduated from high school here in 1975 and we didn't know anything about it or at least I didn't. I'll put it that way. I went to college, got my degree and worked for some professional pharmaceutical companies and I came back and I thought if there was a gap or a link not filled here -- as a kid growing up, it was something that I wish we would have had back then and I made a promise to myself that if I ever got into a position to
where I can give back and make a change and make an impact, I would. So, 10 years ago, I reached my career and at that point that I was able to do that and luckily the community in the New Braunfels has stuck with me and Seguin -- we all joined together and it's kind of a partnership team effort," said Green.
Green says the event will include a large assortment of free food and music and will also welcome a special guest speaker.
"His name is Frank Johnson, the Honorable Frank Johnson. I call him that. He's been a mayor. He's been a government liaison officer for the Texas A&M and Prairie View A&M System and he's now the vice chair of the mayor's international group," said Green.
Green says a number of area sponsors contribute to this event each year and encourages more folks from Seguin to make the trip over to New Braunfels. VFW Post in New Braunfels is located at 600 Peace Ave. Those wishing to RSVP are encouraged to call 830-730-3559.

Former CDC Director Warns Next Pandemic Could Be Bird Flu
(Undated) -- A former CDC director is warning that the next pandemic could be from bird flu. Dr. Robert Redfield told NewsNation that it’s not a question of “if,” but more of a question of “when we have a bird flu pandemic.” This following a recent World Health Organization announcement of a human death from bird flu in Mexico, the first ever reported. In the U.S. the virus has been found in cattle. The former CDC director also predicts that the mortality rate for bird flu would probably be “somewhere between 25 and 50 percent.” That compares with oh-point-six percent for COVID-19.

Microbots Deliver Medicine To Cancer Cells
(San Diego, CA) -- Scientists are testing microscopic robots that can swim through the lungs to deliver chemotherapy to lung cancer cells. Early tests on mice with lung cancer showed the robots extended the average survival time. The microbots are specially-coated drug-filled nanoparticles attached to green algae cells that can work their way directly to the cell without triggering an immune response from the body. The team plans to carry out tests on larger animals in preparation for eventual human trials. The report was published last week in the journal Science Advances.
