Seguin ISD students to have access to personal mobile devices this fall (Seguin) - Students in the Seguin ISD this upcoming school year will have a personal electronic device of their own.

19 pandemic. With the uncertainty of the typical school day this fall, as well as the potential for additional extended closures, getting a mobile device into the hands of our students is paramount," said Lewis.

The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees this week approved the personal technology device thanks to the school district's new 1:1 initiative.

This fall, the plan calls for Seguin High School students to be assigned a Chromebook. At the elementary level, kindergarten through third grade students will have access to iPads while fourth and fifth graders will have Macbooks. During the second year of the program, middle school students will receive Chromebooks.

Trustees unanimously approved funding for the plan to ensure that students are getting the most out of their day by having unlimited access to technology. "Expanding the availability to technology in the classroom and beyond will allow all of our students to participate, collaborate and interact with lessons. When our students have access to their own device, we won't have to worry about the inconvenience of sharing technology," said Bill Lewis, Seguin ISD associate superintendent of technology during his presentation to trustees on the new initiative.

Lewis explained that the first-year cost for the initiative will be $620,000. Year two will see a similar cost. Trustees unanimously approved the year one amount through a designation of fund balance during Tuesday's board meeting. The 1:1 initiative also includes a fiveyear technology replacement cycle as devices, apps and software starts to become obsolete.

During 2020-2021--year one of the program--ninth through twelfth grade students will receive a device that they are free to take home while kindergarten through fifth graders will have access to a device in the classroom.

The rollout will include additional program aspects such as a student device protection plan, staff professional development during the summer months, cord replacement, athome web filters, charging stations and access to Google Classroom.

"This past spring saw us deploying devices to students as our school buildings were closed due to the COVID-

COVID-19 having a toll on Connect Seguin “The first iteration of Connect Seguin started at 20 stops. Five stops repeatedly. It was an hour headway. In transit terms, is if I’m at the library how long before the bus comes back to me would be an hour. Unfortunately, it’s longer than an hour. It was more an hour, fifteen, an hour 20, almost 90 minutes. It wasn’t very reliable. It wasn’t very consistent and there was a lot of issues. It was not the smoothest kick off at the time,” said Oliver.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The global pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus has taken a toll on just about every aspect of life these days, including public transportation. That was the message from James Oliver, the deputy director of Alamo Regional Transit, which partners with the city of Seguin to offer the public the Connect Seguin bus service. Oliver made a presentation to the Seguin City Council on Tuesday about the program. He says the program got off to a rocky start in 2012-13, but they learned a lot over the years.

Oliver says tweaks have continued to be made over the years, but he says in 2017, they were able to find a successful strategy. As a result, the ridership numbers grew significantly over the last couple of years. “We changed two bus stops. We also changed the flow at the time. It turned more into a traditional fixed route. We published times that we were going to be there. So, this starts at 7. At 7:15, I’ll be at this location. At 8:15, I’ll be back at it at HEB at 9:15. It was more of a traditional fixed route, new bus stop signs and our ridership took off,” said Oliver. Oliver says 2020 started promising, but COVID-19 changed all of that. He says its ridership numbers dropped in Seguin, and it’s been slow to return. Part of that is also due to the fact that social distancing

rules have to be followed and that limits the bus’s capacity. Oliver says he expects the numbers to grow as more demand comes this summer and into the fall. Oliver says they have received some federal funds in response to the pandemic that will allow it to make up some of the lost revenue and to begin planning for the next steps. He says they know there are more opportunities to provide public transportation for more people in the city of Seguin. “We know that there is a demand out there that we are not meeting just yet. How can we get that? Is that another route? Is that some different mode of service? Though, Cares Act funding provides us with that additional funding source to do that, to regain that loss of ridership, to do that pre-planning again but what is that going to look like? It that an alternative motor service? Is it a fixed route? Is it applicable in a situation like this? Nobody has ever been down this road. This is something different, so we are looking at all alternatives,” said Oliver. There's generally small fare charged for use of the buses, but Oliver says they are not charging the fee at this time. He says those free rides will likely continue for the next couple of months.

(Austin) - The Texas athletic department announced 13 more football players have tested positive for COVID-19 as they return to campus. Another 10 Longhorns are asymptomatic and self-quarantined. This is on top of the two positive cases reported last week. Also, UT said four more players have tested positive for the COVID-19 antibody. Texas did not release the names of the player because of federal privacy laws.

(New York) -- MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred immediately rejected a proposed 70-game regularseason schedule by the players, and MLB Network is reporting the owners do not plan on issuing an immediate counteroffer. The league had relented on its previous stance of not offering players fully prorated salaries following a face-to-face meeting between Manfred and union head Tony Clark on Wednesday, but had proposed a 60-game regular season that would save around $275 million in salaries. The two sides appear to have agreed on expanded playoffs and a universal DH rule for the next two seasons.

San Francisco wide receiver Deebo Samuel has undergone surgery to repair a broken left foot he suffered during casual workouts in Tennessee. Samuel tweeted that he will be back and better than before in 10 weeks - about two weeks before the 49ers' first regular season game - but the team will not establish a timeline for a return until Samuel can be inspected when he arrives for camp. The former second-round pick had 961 scrimmage yards in his rookie season last year and 229 yards from scrimmage in the 49ers' run to the Super Bowl. Suspended wide receiver Josh Gordon has petitioned the league for reinstatement. The embattled 29-yearold has been suspended by the NFL eight times, including several bans for violating the league's policy on banned substances. Gordon broke onto the scene in 2013, racking up 87 catches for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns with the Browns, but his offfield troubles landed him in New England and Seattle in the last two seasons. NFL teams went high-tech for team bonding this offseason (New York-AP) -- NFL players and coaches went home in March and stayed there for the next few months, along with most of the world. Football pads were replaced by iPads. Handshakes and high-fives gave way to emojis and video chats.

''There's a little bit of a running joke on our staff that (Brian) Daboll doesn't call anyone, he just FaceTimes people,'' Buffalo coach Sean McDermott said of his offensive coordinator. ''It's been pretty cool to watch it unfold over this offseason because I've found myself now FaceTiming people instead of just calling them, which sometimes leads to weird surroundings - and I'll let you figure out what that looks like through the course of life.''

When the coronavirus pandemic forced everyone indoors - away from their everyday environments creativity was the key. To working. To keeping in touch. And, for those making their living playing on football fields, to thinking up ways to bond as teammates. So, many played video games. Some held workout challenges. One team had an online cooking competition. Another designed movie posters. During this time of social distancing, team building went high-tech.

Several players have recently joined protests around the country to support racial equality and denounce police brutality. The Broncos and Jaguars were among teams that organized their own marches.

''We have players that are installing defenses and we have Jeopardy games,'' said Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator for the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. ''There's all kinds of things that we do to keep each other attentive and amused in some ways in sticking with football and yet getting things done. It's a challenge in this way.'' Team facilities will remain closed to the vast majority of players until training camp, which is scheduled to begin next month. The past few months normally would've been filled with inperson meetings as players and coaches got to know each other. This year, they've had to do most of that through computer screens with video meetings, phone calls, remote gym sessions - and whatever else they could come up with.

As states begin to reopen and relax some social restrictions, some players have been able to get in some on-field face time.

The Browns held an online slam dunk contest, ''You know, I wish more of the O-line played video which rookie linebacker Jacob Phillips won by games,'' Baltimore offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley jamming a basketball into a milk bucket hanging said, ''because I'd be totally for it.'' on a tree - all while wearing work boots and overalls.
