Building a better community ONE nail at a time

(Seguin) -- Hundreds of volunteers were put to work on Saturday during the first ever “Build for Better Bash” benefiting Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio and Guadalupe Valley.

The volunteers hammered away in shifts -- piecing together 2x4’s for dozens of wall panels to be used for future homes. The event was held outside TLU’s Seguin Hall located just off of West Court Street.

A number of businesses sponsored the event -- many of those businesses also came out with fellow employees who also wanted to give back.

The fundraiser effort not only prepared the walls for future homes but it also initiated awareness about the local Habitat efforts and the goal for the group to build even more homes throughout Seguin and Guadalupe County.

Among those businesses partnering with Habitat this weekend was Seguin Radio KWED.

During its live broadcast of the event, KWED caught up with many of the folks who showed up to roll up their sleeves. Among those hamming in those nails was Seguin’s very own Mayor Donna Dodgen.

“I want this to continue so please if you missed this year, come out next year. It is just so very very important. The city of Seguin has committed to continuing to be a partner because we know how important this is,” said Dodgen.

Although it’s a charitable effort, Dodgen says Habitat is the kind of non-profit that folks like to see in a community. She says not only are these new homeowners helping themselves but they are adding to this community.

“I said in my opening that we can only be as healthy as our community is and this is a piece of that health that our community needs desperately and you know it only improves each of our lives.

Pecantown hosts SOLD OUT drag soiree

(Seguin) -- Doing business sometimes means supporting all of its friends, and this past Sunday, that is exactly what happened at Pecantown Books & Brews. The downtown bookstore let its pride flag fly as it hosted a Drag Brunch Soiree featuring local performers. The store closed its doors for the private event, which was imagined and brought to life by Seguin native George Nickel, known as Georgia before his gender transition.

George began performing under the stage name Kupid Kopperhead as a way to embrace his gender identity and share a personal passion with the community.

“I came into my queer identity, openly, a few years ago,” he said. “I started getting back into the Seguin community. And I just was really like, I would love to share this part of myself with the world and with Seguin.”

Drag is a performance of exaggerated femininity or masculinity for entertainment performed by a drag queen or king. Outside of the queer community, RuPaul’s Drag Race is an accessible entry point to drag for most people, but the art form can be traced back to ancient Greece, where men would perform female roles in plays. Males playing female roles was also the standard during Shakespearean times when a man would have performed the role of Juliet, or even Lady Macbeth.

Drag performers like George embrace this concept and use it to work through the complexities of the human experience while having fun and expressing themselves.

“I think drag is taking the sort of societal expectations of gender and morphing them into your own creative process,” George said. “I know that a lot of people associate drag with like RuPaul’s Drag Race

and cis gay men doing drag, which it absolutely is, but it also has a lot of nonbinary people, or lesbians who do drag. I know that I’m a transgender man and I do drag.”

Performers were a diverse group and ranged from males performing as females to women performing as flamboyant female archetypes fitting in the brunch’s theme of ‘Classics, Comics, & Camp, Oh My!’

Performer Jenna, who goes by her stage name Last the Stampede, uses drag to hyper-exaggerate her feminine traits as opposed to performing as a male character. This allows her to feel connected to her femininity through her artistic expression.

For the Drag Brunch Soiree, Jenna chose the literary classic ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ as her inspiration because it critically examines women’s mental and physical needs. Soiree, pg. 3

Agents seize drugs off IH-10

(Seguin) -- One drug's dealers sweet tooth was reportedly intercepted last week on IH-10.

Agents with the Guadalupe County Narcotics Task Force say a traffic stop last Thursday at 7:15 p.m. led to the seizure of 32.6 pounds of Methamphetamine. They say the drugs were concealed in candy packaging. Additionally, a hidden compartment with even more methamphetamines was located in an ice chest.

Officials credit K9 Sgt. Dustin Crawford for the drug bust. They say after stopping

the Volkswagen passenger car on IH-10 East, Crawford " observed an anomaly in the vehicle's contents which led him to seek consent to search the vehicle." Arrested was the driver and sole occupant of the Volkswagen, Luis Alberto Hernandez Ramirez, a 37-yearold from Garcia, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

Assisting Crawford was Seguin Police Case Unit Officer Alex Trejo.

Ramirez is charged with possession with intent to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine.

To embody the short story, Jenna styled her costume for the day in antique Victorian white, with a corset and exposed bustles, tear-stained yellow face paint, and, of course, a massive set of lashes to match her stage persona.

“One of my favorite short stories that we read in high school was ‘The Yellow Wall Paper,’” she said. “And so this look is very inspired by that story. I don’t know if I got the time period correct, but to me, just the story gives,

like old Victorian vintage. And so that’s kind of what I went for. It is an exaggeration of gender identity. And so as early as someone knows that they’re transgender, I also early on knew that I was a woman and I was cisgender, and so I’ve always really loved the early side of things, and like not hyping it up, amplifying it in a way to where it’s like, ridiculous is definitely fun for me.”

Pecantown owner Tess CoodyAnders was excited about the soldout show and is proud that her independent bookstore could host the event.

“Pecantown’s mission is to foster productive collusions in our community, and to find ways to help people bridge divides whether that’s through opening a book, breaking bread together, or holding events like this” Tess said. “George is one of our devoted customers who’s been with us since the beginning. When he came to us with the idea and asked if we would be a place where he could hold his inaugural show in Seguin, we felt like it was on mission to do that, and we wanted to support George. We are really happy to host and be a place where people feel allied and safe.”

Community member Julie Dickerson attended the event with family and left Pecantown following the show with a smile.

“I thought the show was fantastic,” she said. “It was spirited and enlightened and so celebratory of the LGBTQ+ community. It was a beautiful event. I loved Kupid Kopperhead, I thought he did an amazing job as a host and putting the show together. It was obviously a labor of love.”

George has plans to bring another drag show to Seguin sometime in the future. He hopes that until then, the Drag Brunch Soiree held at Pecantown will help spread a little love, tolerance, and positivity in the local community.

Soiree, continued.

Building, continued.

When I do for others, it fills my cup. I mean the bottom line is that what it does. It fills me up. It helps me move on to the next thing so how can you not want to do something like that for your community and take that to the next level. We each need that. We care about each other. Every one of our volunteer organizations does something for our community and so get involved in some way. Become a part of that solution to continue to improve Seguin, Texas and housing is an incredible way to do that,” said Dodgen.

Working alongside the mayor was Josh Schneuker, the executive director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation. Schneuker, known for being hands on with the local economy, says having a strong Habitat chapter shows the true strength of a community.

“There’s a lot of growth happening in Seguin but there is also a lot of folks that are in need in our community and it’s just so great to be here today, to be able to help out. I see so many members of our community -to see so many businesses here lending a helping hand -- helping build homes, shelters for people that need that. A lot of these kids have their own rooms and things like that. We take it for granted in our own lives but those that are less fortunate to be able to be here today and working with everybody here is really heartwarming,” said Schneuker.

Organizers estimate just over 200 volunteers showed up to participate. The event included food and music to help keep the workers going.

They say plans are already in the works for what they know will be an even bigger and better event next year. Those interested in helping to build an even stronger Seguin are encouraged to visit their website at habitatgv.org

Martin

Harold Lee Martin, 84, originally of Covington, Indiana, passed from this life peacefully on June 12th, 2024, at his residence in Seguin, Texas. He represented the last of that generation of the Martin family.

Harold was born July 7, 1939, the youngest of six children to Clifford and Marvel (Osborn) Martin. All of his siblings preceded him in death: Bill, Marge, Margaret, Tom and Rosemary. They grew up on the family farm outside of Covington. Harold graduated from Covington High School and married Gaye Cable in 1958. They had two daughters, Amanda Lee and Rebecca Lee. Harold and Gaye divorced in 1974.

Talking about the good times with their father included remembering snatches of songs he liked to sing, how he would tell them to “Rise and shine and greet this new day!”, horseback riding, camping in Colorado and summers with the Martin clan at Lake Shafer (watching their water-skiing cousins!)--all contributing to a wonderful childhood.

Harold worked several different jobs from farming to insurance sales to working at the VA during his life and ultimately retired from Teepak in

Danville, IL. Harold married Marie in 1974 and was committed to her until she passed away in 2001. He moved to Seguin, Texas soon after and was a member of Cross Church where he sang in the Choir. His closest friend in Seguin was Sherrie Powers and they shared many good years together. For the past 2 years, he was a resident of Argent Court Assisted Living and always enjoyed his meals with Carl and Charlie.

His daughters want to thank Sherrie Powers, the staff at Argent Court, the staff of Suncrest Hospice and caregivers Tammy and Norma, who were so helpful during his final weeks.

Surviving Harold are his daughters Amanda Martin Bell (Brian) and Rebecca Lee Poudrier (Ray), as well as 3 beautiful granddaughters, Morgan, Erin and Devyn Bell and Devyn’s husband, Nathan Sulya. His first wife, Gaye, preceded in him death on June 16, 2015.

“Uncle Harold Lee”-- his humor, his singing voice, and his charm -- will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews from the next generation: Jack, Tom and Marsha (Marge and Ted Sims); Linda and Camilla (Bill and Rosie Martin); Terry, Sharla, Rhonda, Kevin and Sherilyn (Tom and Retha Dean Martin); Carolyn, Kenny, Bob, Raquel, and Ruthann (Rosemary and Bob Hunt); and daughters Mandy and Becky (Harold and Gaye Martin).

The Martin family will hold a celebration of life for both Harold and Gaye on July 21st in Covington, Indiana.
