FREE microchipping until Saturday for local pets

(Seguin) -- You’ve got three more days to have your pet microchipped for free.
Seguin Animal Services has been providing the free service throughout June.
Shelter Manager Shelley Lutz says this free service has always been offered twice a year and for plenty of good reason.
“We do it twice a year -- both in preparation for July 4 and New Year’s Eve. More animals go missing on July 4 than any other time of the year and so the thought behind it was the more we can get microchipped, the more that we can get returned home if they should go missing very quickly, very easily,” said Lutz.
Lutz believes in microchipping and says it’s the best way to reunite a pet should it ever get lost or stolen.
“Microchips work. Anytime, we pick up an animal or go out to an animal call, we scan everything and so they are scanned. Usually, the microchip is located just under the skin right between the shoulders blades. A number comes up. We are able to put that into our shelter management system or a national database and you put that microchip number in and it tells us where it is registered to and where to call and get that pet returned,” said Lutz.
Lutz says her staff makes the microchipping process as simple as possible. All pet owners have to do is bring their pets in before noon Saturday.
“You just come in. We are open Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 and on Saturday from 9:30 until noon.

Gaming, kids activities on tap for Freedom

(Seguin) -- There will be plenty of Backyard Shenanigans happening during this year’s 2024 KWED Freedom Fiesta. Among the experiences being hosted will be a game night featuring Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers. Gamers will get to experience interactive fun on large outdoor movie screens.
Backyard Shenanigans, one of Seguin’s newest inflatable and gaming businesses, says it jumped at the chance of being part of the Fourth of July celebration. The business is owned by Kyle Dwyer. This year’s celebration runs from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday in Central Park
This year’s Freedom Fiesta will be equipped with even more holiday fun for local children. Returning will be a street lined with inflatable jumpy houses. Again returning for its third straight year is H&R Party Rentals. The bound house play area will include slides, obstacle courses, and bull riding. The cost for unlimited play is $10 per child. Parents are
encouraged to dress their children in socks as they are encouraged for the equipment.
Also returning for their 10th plus year will be Super Awesome Balloon Animals out of San Antonio. Face painting will also be available for kids to sport their individual imagination.
Toy vendors will also be on site this Saturday.
Of course, the featured event designed specifically for kids is the annual Kiddie Parade. The parade is a non-partisan parade around Central Park hosted by the Guadalupe County Republican Women. The event is free and gets underway at 6 p.m.
The parade is the official kickoff for Freedom Fiesta festivities.
No registration is required. Kids are just asked to dress in their best red, white and blue and show off their patriotic pride. Two top prizes will be given in each of the three categories being judged.
Those categories including walking/ strolling; bikes, scooters, skateboards and motorized vehicles.
Families are asked to arrive around 5:45 p.m. in front of the stage just south of the Guadalupe County Courthouse.

Independence Day Celebrations start THIS WEEKEND

(Seguin) -- Seguin’s celebrations for Independence Day will kick off on Saturday, June 29, with Freedom Fiesta and the Patriotic Concert on Sunday, June 30.
KWED will be hosting Freedom Fiesta in Central Park from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 29. The event will feature live music by Texas country music artist Brandon Michael.
Michael has performed alongside country music stars including Shenandoah, Kyle Park, and Craig Campbell. Other music will be provided by DJ D’Trayne who will be playing music near a new addition to the event - video games played on large screens.
After the National Anthem and presentation of the colors, the Guadalupe County Republican Women will kick off the festival with the Kiddie Parade. All families are invited to dress in red, white, and blue and ride their bikes and wagons through Central Park as part of the parade.
The park will also have over 20 food trucks and food booths plus multiple vendors providing something for everyone to enjoy.

“The trick to microchips is to keep your information updated. If you change your phone number, if you change an address, you need to call your microchip company immediately and have that information updated because that is the only way that we can get them back to you if that information is current,” said Lutz.

Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion
Seguin three-star receiver Nik Henry lands another college offer
(Seguin) -- Seguin High School threestar receiver Nik Henry received his 12th college football offer on Tuesday.
Henry, who is entering his senior season for the Matadors, announced on social media yesterday that he received an offer from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Henry was recently named a three-star recruit by athletic recruitment website 247Sports and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
As a junior in 2023, Henry led Seguin in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. The wide-out had 35 receptions for 766 yards and eight touchdowns in eight games played.
The speedy wide receiver won a bronze medal at the UIL Class 5A state track meet last month competing as a member of the Seguin boys 4X100 meter relay team. Henry along with Ocean Moreno, Elliot Weaver and Kayden Holz finished third in the state at the May 3rd meet. The Seguin boys 4X200 meter relay team consisting of Moreno, Henry, Weaver and Sammy Bode finished fifth. Henry also competed in the boys 100 meter dash finishing in fifth place in the finals.
Henry also has college football offers from Grambling State University, University of Texas El Paso (UTEP), Montana State University,
Texas Southern University, Air Force Academy, Army West Point, University Of Incarnate word (UIW), Lamar university, East Central University, Texas State University and Stephen F. Austin University (SFA).

Riley Jean McDavitt, age 73 of McQueeney, passed away on June 2, 2024. Riley was born on December 14, 1950 in Ft. Riley, Kansas to Kathryn (Jordan) and Jerome A. McDavitt.
Born into a military family, Riley spent his early years in Kansas and France, but grew up primarily in the San Antonio area. He graduated from Churchill High School and would later serve multiple combat tours in Vietnam. Riley earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Horticulture from Texas A&M University in 1978, before returning to active military duty. After completing his military service, Riley began to focus on what would become his life’s calling: teaching.
Riley was a public school science teacher for over 30 years and also served as Cheer Coach for Southside ISD, River City Mustangs, and Camp Manager for the National Cheerleading Association. More than anything, he absolutely loved teaching others how to waterski at Lake Breeze Ski Lodge as well as Riley’s H2O Ski School. Beyond lessons, Riley taught countless friends, family and complete strangers to ski just for the fun of it. He retired from Seguin ISD in 2018, but continued teaching others to ski as long as the lake would allow.
Riley was passionate about waterskiing, barefooting, and most of all Lake McQueeney. He enjoyed spending time on the lake with his loved ones, skiing with the Ski Bees, gardening, mowing the lawn and watching Aggie
sports. Riley had a tenacious spirit, taking on all obstacles with positivity, a laid-back attitude and a special kind of patience. He was an intensely loyal friend and an incredibly dedicated father.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his brother, Jordan McDavitt, his brother-in-law, Odes Ray Brown, and his cousin, Billy Kerwin.
Survivors include his son, John McDavitt and wife Rebecca; daughter, Felicia McDavitt Cordes and husband Luke; grandchildren, Marcus and Lily McDavitt and Lake Cordes; sisters, Linda McDavitt and Sandra “Sandy” McDavitt Brown; sister-in-law, Jan McDavitt; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.
A celebration of life gathering will be held at Lake Breeze Ski Lodge in McQueeney on Sunday, June 30th from 2:00 - 5:00 PM with remarks and military honors to begin at 3 p.m.

Leola “Penny” Johnson, age 92 of San Antonio, passed away June 20, 2024. She was born April 15, 1932, in New Bremen, Texas in Karnes County, to Freddie and Laura (Huth) Jauer.
Penny attended a one room school not far from her parent’s farm and later graduated from Karnes City High School in 1949. After graduation she attended secretarial school and later worked at the old Frost Bank building in San Antonio.
On March 17, 1952, she married her long-time sweetheart Jack Johnson. She became a military wife and thus began a journey of moving from base to base during her husbands over twenty-year career.

Terry Lee Kelley, age 69, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on June 18, 2024. Terry was born on October 1, 1954 in Pasadena, Texas, to Cora Billie (Watts) and James Otis Gravitt.
Terry was a member of First Baptist Church and was an active member of the Difference Makers Sunday School Class. She also enjoyed her work as a volunteer at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brother James Durwin Gravitt, sister Gloria Jean Gravitt, and brotherin-law Wayne Knape.

Larry W. Grigg, age 80 of Seguin, passed away on June 16, 2024. Larry was born on December 29, 1943 in Houston, Texas to Lorene (Butler) Nitsch and Joseph “Joe” Grigg.
Larry lived a life of dedication, hard work, and a profound love for his family and the outdoors.
Larry built a successful career as a communications specialist, working for Southwestern Bell, AT&T, and Southwest Century Communications. His colleagues remember him as a hard working and reliable professional who ensured every job was completed to the highest standard.
Outside of work, Larry found joy in hunting at the family ranches in Crystal City and Fentress, and fishing in local lakes and rivers. These outdoor activities were often spent with family and friends and provided a source of peace and fulfillment for him, and he cherished the time spent in nature.
Family was important to Larry. His passion for sports and the outdoors served as a foundation for the bond he created with his children. His days were often spent in the backyard, at sporting events and at the ranch teaching Heath and Brittney invaluable skills and important life lessons. Through his guidance, they learned the value of hard work, responsibility and perseverance, which became the bedrock of their success.
In his early years, Larry was an active member of the Seguin Volunteer Fire Department, where he served his community with distinction. He also participated in the pumper racing team, forging strong bonds and creating lasting memories with his fellow firefighters.
Sports were a significant part of Larry’s life. He enjoyed spending weekday evenings playing softball for the church league and the city’s over35 league, where his competitive spirit and camaraderie shone brightly. In
retirement, Larry found joy in shooting trap and skeet on Friday evenings and weekends, a hobby that brought him great satisfaction and a host of dear friends.
Larry’s retirement years were devoted to caring for the family ranch in Fentress. He spent his days planting and tending to his garden, ensuring it thrived and provided fresh produce for his family. His tireless efforts in shredding, mowing, and maintaining the property kept the ranch beautiful and welcoming for all who visited.
Above all, his love for Pat was his true compass here on earth. Together, they spent their autumn years enjoying the life they built with their children and grandchildren.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thomas Grigg.
Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Pat Barnes Grigg; son, Heath Scott Grigg and wife April (Tschoepe); daughter, Brittney Grigg Madden and husband Slade; grandchildren, Kolton Grigg, Emery Grigg, Lovie Madden and Mary Madden; step sister, Charlene Nitsch Graeber; sisters-in-law, Barbara Behal and Gayle Barnes; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and a host of friends.

Surgeon General Advisory Against Gun Violence
(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. Surgeon General says gun violence in the U.S. is a public health crisis and requires the collective commitment of the nation to stop it. Vivek Murthy’s new advisory is the first time a Surgeon General has used the platform to decry firearm violence and the consequences it has on survivors and mental health. A poll last year showed that more than half of U.S. adults had experienced a firearm-related incident or knew a loved one who had. One in five say they’ve been threatened with a gun.
High Court Hears Case Involving Controversial Law
(Washington, DC) -- The Supreme Court’s decision to take up Tennessee’s ban on transgender healthcare for kids will likely have a ripple effect nationwide. There are 24 other states that have similar laws, including Tennessee, which bans intervention like hormone therapies and puberty blockers for kids. Last month, South Carolina became the 25th state to pass a similar law and Scotland is the latest European nation to pass a ban. The case is being argued by Lambda Legal.
Slow-Release Ketamine Pill Shows Promise In Treating Depression (New Zealand) -- Research continues on a new ketamine pill that could help treat depression with fewer side effects. A slow-release ketamine pill showed to be somewhat effective in an early study in relieving symptoms. The study, conducted by researchers in New Zealand, was published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine.
High Court Refuses To Hear Lawsuit Over Coronavirus Shots
(Washington, DC) -- A Texas group questioning the safety of COVID vaccines for kids lost its lawsuit after the Supreme Court refused to hear the case, saying the group had no legal standing . This was over the FDA’s emergency authorization of the COVID shot. The group claimed the shot was dangerous, and criticized the feds for pushing what they called pro-vaccine propaganda. It singled out a Sesame Street YouTube video where Elmo got the COVID shot. The activists were backed by the Children’s Health Defense, which is a non-profit founded by presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Junior.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has established a Disaster Recovery Center at the Redwood Community Center, located at 2045 Spruce St. in San Marcos for Guadalupe County residents affected by the May 9 weather event. The Biggest Small-Town Fourth of July Parade in Texas will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4 along Austin St. in downtown Seguin. The parade route begins at the intersection of Austin and College Streets and ends at the Seguin Coliseum, with all entries traveling south along Austin St. Parade attendees are asked not to block parade route sidewalks with chairs and other items until the morning of the event. To allow for the best parade viewing experience, drivers are asked to not park along the parade route, which includes Austin St. from East Weinert St. to Nelda St.
