A hometown headliner

Brandon Michael set to play Freedom Fiesta this Saturday

Chris Austin

(Seguin) -- Brandon Michael will hit the stage at this year’s Freedom Fiesta at Central Park in Seguin on Saturday.

Michael is no stranger to Seguin. Michael is a Seguin native, and he says he’s excited to play on the square in his hometown.

“Really excited, actually. I grew up in Seguin. I graduated (from Seguin High School.) So, Seguin’s my hometown. It’ll be fun to finally play right down from where everything started, where I first picked up the guitar. It will be good to finally play for everybody that was there in the beginning,” said Michael.

When he does hit the stage, Michael says he makes a concerted effort to engage his audience young and old.

“Whenever I’m on stage, I try to connect to everybody. It doesn’t matter if they’re little babies or 80 years old. I try to make sure that everyone feels connected to the music or at least engaged with me because I’ve got little babies.

DJ music part of the new fun at this year’s Freedom Fiesta

(Seguin) – Seguin Radio KWED is adding a new mix to its music lineup during this Saturday’s Freedom Fiesta.

Along with the live music being provided on stage by Country Artist Brandon Michael, DJ DTrayne has also been invited to keep folks dancing on the other end of the festival grounds.

Among DTrayne’s accolades is being named the 2023 Gold Winner for Top DJ in the Seguin Radio KWED Top Choice Awards.

KWED says it wanted to add to the energy of this year’s event and keep people dancing.

DJ DTrayne, as he is best known

around town, says he is ready this weekend to bring out those good vibes.

“I’m originally from Seguin, born and raised. I love the community. I love doing community events out here and just being a part of the nightlife business. I’m going to make sure the kids are having a good time. We are going to make sure those parents are having a good time -- all the good stuff like that -- good vibes, good entertainment,” said DJ DTrayne.

For the past 11 years, DJ DTrayne has worked in the business and says he works hard to keep the crowd happy.

“We are going to playing stuff for the kids. We are going to be playing

some country music. We are going to be playing a little bit of fun, hip hop music, line dances -- all that good stuff,” said DJ DTrayne. “Come on out and have a good time. It’s a good time in Seguin, Texas, Fourth of July weekend. We are going to do it big ya’ll. I’m just honored to be a part of this.”

Like DTrayne, Brandon Michael is also from Seguin and is being given this opportunity to perform before his home crowd. Michael will perform from 8 to 11 p.m. while DJ DTrayne will provide music non-stop from 6 to 11 p.m.

This year’s Freedom Fiesta will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday in Central Park. There is no cost to attend.

This year’s live entertainment will be provided by Seguin native Brandon Michael. Michael, a country music artist, will take the stage from 8 to 11 p.m. Also, on the grounds this year will be DJ DTrayne who will be providing nonstop music throughout the evening.

Over 20 food trucks and nonprofit food booths will also be on site selling a variety of foods, drinks and desserts.

Several vendors will also set up shop around Central Park. A wide range of items will be available for purchase.

This year, Backyard Shenanigans will be hosting a gaming area for kids and adults.

H&R Party Rental will also be selling $10 armbands for unlimited play on inflatable houses and obstacle courses. Also available

Headliner, continued.

If there’s little kids, sometimes I’ll play “Baby Shark” at my show, you never know. But I’ll always try and make sure that everyone’s engaged and that I talk to everybody. And whenever I take a break or the show’s over, I always try to walk around and shake hands and make sure everybody’s enjoying the show because if it weren’t for

will be face painting and balloon animals.

Hosting this year’s beer garden will again be members of the Knights of Columbus of Seguin.

Folks are reminded to bring their blankets and lawn chairs. A complete guide on Freedom Fiesta can be picked up today at KWED from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The guide is available online at SeguinToday.com.

the fans and everybody out in the crowd, I wouldn’t have a job,” said Michael.

Michael cites many artists he admires. He says he has come a long way since he first performed a song from one of his favorite singers on stage.

“So, the first song that I ever sang in front of anybody ever was in Kingsbury at a firefighters benefit with a guy named Clint Taft and the Buck Wild Band. I’m sure you all know who Clint Taft is, And the first song I ever sang was “Neon” by Chris Young. And I was like 16 at the time, and that was my first time ever singing in front of people. I was so nervous at the time. You could’ve blinked at me, and I would’ve fallen over. That was long before my official career started, but yeah Chris Young, George Strait, Sawyer Brown, Keith Whitley, Conway Twitty, that’s the stuff that I grew up listening to, Clay Walker. That’s what I remember as a kid,” said Michael.

Festivities get underway at 6 p.m. Saturday in Central Park located in downtown Seguin. Michael is set to take the stage at 8 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

McDavitt

Riley Jean McDavitt, age 73 of McQueeney, passed away on June 2, 2024. Riley was born on December 14, 1950 in Ft. Riley, Kansas to Kathryn (Jordan) and Jerome A. McDavitt.

Born into a military family, Riley spent his early years in Kansas and France, but grew up primarily in the San Antonio area. He graduated from Churchill High School and would later serve multiple combat tours in Vietnam. Riley earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Horticulture from Texas A&M University in 1978, before returning to active military duty. After completing his military service, Riley began to focus on what would become his life’s calling: teaching.

Riley was a public school science teacher for over 30 years and also served as Cheer Coach for Southside ISD, River City Mustangs, and Camp Manager for the National Cheerleading Association. More than anything, he absolutely loved teaching others how to waterski at Lake Breeze Ski Lodge as well as Riley’s H2O Ski School. Beyond lessons, Riley taught countless friends, family and complete strangers to ski just for the fun of it. He retired from Seguin ISD in 2018, but continued teaching others to ski as long as the lake would allow.

Riley was passionate about waterskiing, barefooting, and most of all Lake McQueeney. He enjoyed spending time on the lake with his loved ones, skiing with the Ski Bees, gardening, mowing the lawn and watching Aggie

sports. Riley had a tenacious spirit, taking on all obstacles with positivity, a laid-back attitude and a special kind of patience. He was an intensely loyal friend and an incredibly dedicated father.

Preceding him in death are his parents, his brother, Jordan McDavitt, his brother-in-law, Odes Ray Brown, and his cousin, Billy Kerwin.

His days were often spent in the backyard, at sporting events and at the ranch teaching Heath and Brittney invaluable skills and important life lessons. Through his guidance, they learned the value of hard work, responsibility and perseverance, which became the bedrock of their success.

In his early years, Larry was an active member of the Seguin Volunteer Fire Department, where he served his community with distinction. He also participated in the pumper racing team, forging strong bonds and creating lasting memories with his fellow firefighters.

Sports were a significant part of Larry’s life. He enjoyed spending weekday evenings playing softball for the church league and the city’s over35 league, where his competitive spirit and camaraderie shone brightly. In

His tireless efforts in shredding, mowing, and maintaining the property kept the ranch beautiful and welcoming for all who visited.
