Seguin ISD offers survey on reopening of schools By Darren Dunn and Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD wants hear your thoughts about the upcoming school year. The district is asking the public to take an online survey. Staff, parents and community members are all invited to take the survey that focuses on the reopening of local schools. Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez says it's important that they get this input, so that they can make an informed decision about how best to start the new school year.

Tuesday, Thursday and while they are on home on the two other days, they are engaged in remote learning so that is Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath was expected still a possibility but right now, what has been to announce this week his official plan for reopening Texas communicated with school districts is the face to face public schools, but that was postpoined last week after the learning or the remote learning. It is our hope that we can have a hybrid model that we can look at so that we can get as many of our kids in our classrooms engaged in that face to face learning,” said Gutierrez. Districts all across the state are sort of at the mercy of the pandemic. They are all making plans for the new school year, but there are a number of unknown factors, like will health officials deem it safe enough for face-to-face teaching to resume. Dr. Gutierrez says that's why it's important that they keep parents, staff and the community engaged in this process as they work to finalize plans for the new school year.
“We want to get a sense of where our stakeholders are, so that we can begin outlying plans for that reopening of school. Now, the Texas Education Agency announced that there were going to be two options, and know that this could change, but there are going to be two options -students returning to school to their classrooms with teachers learning face-to-face, or the option of parents opting to keep their children at home engaged in remote learning,” said Gutierrez. With the spread of COVID-19 continuing, Dr. Gutierrez says he knows some parents might be concerned about how schools will look when they are scheduled to reopen in governor announced that the number of positive COVIDAugust. “We see things change so fast. We are going to get feedback now but there’s a very high probability that we are going to have to conduct another survey at the end of July or the beginning of August to gauge how people are feeling then because we could be in a very different position with this virus four weeks from now. We could see it level off. We could see significant decreases and that will change people’s perceptions and so it’s important for us to gauge where people are right now as people are starting to think about school starting in a couple of months but it’s going to be really important as we get close to that first day of school,” said Gutierrez. The deadline to complete the survey is Wednesday, July 1. The survey, which is available in both English and Spanish, can be accessed via the district's Facebook page. Seguin ISD superintendent to serve through 2024
School board gives Dr. Gutierrez two year contract extension By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
reflection of his performance but instead a decision based on doing what is financially responsible during these times of uncertainty.
(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees is showing its vote of confidence by unanimously approving a two-year contract extension for its superintendent of schools.
“We decided that just given the climate and not knowing whether teachers and staff would be given any type of raise that it would be fair just to wait until we announce that if any. We are hoping to give them something and then whatever raise that they give as an increase, he would get the same increase,” said Jimenez.
Trustees Thursday night approved the contract extension for Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez following a two-hour evaluation behind closed doors. Board President Cinde Thomas-Jimenez says the district is honored to operate under the leadership of Dr. Gutierrez.
As for Gutierrez, he says he fully understands the board’s decision and looks forward to working even harder for all employees.
“Dr. Gutierrez has 100 percent backing from this board and we are really looking forward to another couple of years with him in addition to what was already in his contract,” said Jimenez. Gutierrez says he is appreciative of the support and is eager to continue the district’s proud mission. “For one, I’m just grateful for this board of trustees and the faith that they have placed in me to lead this amazing district and I do have to say this has been the smoothest evaluation process but that is just the result of the high performing team that I have the opportunity to work alongside,” said Gutierrez. Dr. Gutierrez says the results of his evaluation, he believes, are the efforts of a strong partnership with the board of trustees. “Our board of trustees is laser focused on four specific goals that they spent six months working through last year in a highly collaborate process.
They developed those goals alongside my team and working the Texas Association of School Boards so rather than what you typically see a school board focusing on all the things that aren’t going to have an impact on student achievement, this board is focused on four superintendent goals that they developed so I know exactly what they expect of me. Now, with COVID coming, it is kind of changing that course somewhat because we didn’t have the last several months of school to really look at data when it came to literacy and closing out the school year with other things like
curriculum framework and rigor relevance framework but we were able to really have fellow conversation surrounding that work and the school board awarded those efforts by extending my contract for another two years which I am extremely thankful for. I didn’t expect two years. I thought if it was going to be extended, it would be by one more year,” said Gutierrez. The board Thursday night also opted to hold off on approving any increase of Gutierrez’s salary. Jimenez says the decision was in no way a
“What I don’t know if people realize is that I have also worked hard to tighten our budget because I am determined to be able to do something to compensate our employees. I feel strongly about doing something for them whether it’s a salary increase or retention stipend. I am determined to do something for our staff and in order to do that and feel confident about that decision, we’ve got to tighten our budget, department budgets and reclassify positions and eliminate positions because I am determined to be able to give some type of salary increase or retention stipend to our staff. The board realizes that and what they have agreed on is that whatever is approved for our employees would be the same for me so whatever that may be when we approve the compensation plan, it would align with what we are doing for other staff as well,” said Gutierrez. Dr. Gutierrez, who began in 2017, will see his contract extended through 2024.

(Seguin) -- Head Start services in the Seguin and Guadalupe County will officially return to the hands of the Community Council of South Central Texas. Beginning July 1, the CCSCT will oversee the pre-k Head Start program as well as expanded services for even younger children. For the last five years, the program was being provided locally by Baptist Children and Family Services (BCFS). However prior to that, the CCSCT was in control of the program for over 40 years at its prior location in the old hospital building on Weinert Street. CCSCT Executive Director Bobby Deike says thanks to Head Start's Designation Renewal System (DRS), the administration and responsibly of the early childhood program will return to the local organization. “In most cases, every five years, Head Start programs basically go through a recompetition process which allows eligible entities to apply for the funding and so CCSCT applied for the funding for this program and we were selected by the office of Head Start to be the grantee,” said Deike. Deike says in addition to the current partnership agreement it has with the Seguin ISD, the Head Start Program will also be offering Early Head Start Services. He says this program will be

US Sets New Single Day COVID-19 Record
(Undated) -- The number of new coronavirus cases in the U.S. is setting another record. Thursday saw over 37-thousand new cases of the respiratory illness. It's the second straight record-setting day. The surge is being fueled by hotspots like California, Arizona, Texas and Florida, which have all seen recent spikes. The U.S. has more than two-point-fourmillion cases of COVID-19. Over 124-thousand Americans have died from the illness.
Watchdog Report Blasts Government's Response To Coronavirus Testing
(Washington, DC) -- A government watchdog's report claims the C-D-C hurt efforts to track coronavirus infections, making it harder for the nation to safely reopen. The Government Accountability Office criticized the agency for incomplete and inconsistent data, a delay in response to the virus and shortages in testing supplies and protective equipment. One of the examples the report makes is the CDC mixed antibody tests with those looking for an active infection. Antibodies indicate the person already had the infection and has recovered. Another is some states list people tested, while other states show number of tests completed, even if multiple tests were performed on one person.
WH Coronavirus Task Force Holding Briefing Friday
(Washington, DC) -- The White House Coronavirus Task Force is taking the stage again. The group will hold its first briefing today in about two months. It will be led by Vice President Mike Pence and take place at the Department of Health and Human Services. President Trump is not expected to be around for the briefing. The last task force gathering happened April 27th, not long after Trump took heat for suggesting disinfectants as a way to fight coronavirus.
Tyson Employees' Families Sue Over COVID-19
(Waterloo, IA) -- The families of three employees who died after contracting COVID-19 at an Iowa meat packing plant are suing. The families are suing Tyson Foods and the
company's top leadership because they believe the company knowingly put employees at the plant in Waterloo at risk. The suit alleges that the company lied to workers in order to keep the facility open and employees on the job, even after knowing that COVID-19 was spreading at the plant.
