Just weeks after reclaiming the title of the World's Largest Buc-ee's, the community of Luling was forced to see the old empty convenience store go up in flames Monday morning. Officials with the Luling Volunteer Fire Department said the building on IH 10 reportedly caught fire during demolition. The old Buc-ee's sat very near and to the east of the newly opened store. They both share the same parking lot. Officials say they do not know exactly what caused the fire.

Local museum salutes military community this month

Doors open on the 4th of July for special exhibit

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Heritage Museum will be opening its doors this Fourth of July to salute America and all those in Guadalupe County who have contributed to our freedom.

The museum is hosting a special Patriotic Display, bringing together a collection of military memorabilia from the past.

Donna Brawner, of the museum, says the exhibit contains a unique look at our local history, our liberty and those military heroes who we celebrate.

"When people walk in, they are going to see the most impressive, military, patriotic exhibit featuring all the branches. It's also featuring heroes from Guadalupe County that served in the World Wars. We also have a list of all of the personnel that

served in the World Wars but mainly what is so interesting is the artifacts we have that people have brought in and contributed. Not only do we have the uniforms, but we have the medals. We have German helmets, Japanese helmets, of course, American helmets and it's fascinating to see the evolution of our military from World War I going to Calvary charges against tanks to all the way through the Afghanistan War and it's just a part of Seguin history that I think people would really be interested to see and know. We are

also putting out military pictures of former Guadalupe County military personnel. We are also providing a lot of history with each exhibit," said Brawner.

Brawner says although the exhibit will remain in place throughout July, the museum is asking that locals also share the invite to those in town for the 4th of July holiday. She says it also makes for a unique experience before and after this year's parade in downtown Seguin. Museum, pg. 4

Seguin Mayor gives Freedom Fiesta a thumbs-up

Celebration launches 4th of July festivities in Seguin

(Seguin) -- The celebration of our nation's independence is well underway in Seguin. Helping to launch the city's nearly week-long schedule of festivities were the hundreds of folks who turned out Saturday night in downtown for Freedom Fiesta, the annual community celebration hosted by Seguin Radio KWED.

Folks came out Saturday night to enjoy food, live music, vendors, activities for kids, and plenty of other fun events.

Among those who stayed for the whole party was Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen.

Dodgen says Freedom Fiesta is a tradition for Seguin, and she says it was another huge success.

"Oh my gosh, it was incredible. So many food trucks so spread out. Music on different ends. Each different groups dancing all night long. It was really a lot of fun and it was a nice breeze even though it was really hot but it was great," said Dodgen.

Dodgen says this year's Freedom Fiesta also welcomed another great Kiddie Parade hosted by the Guadalupe County Republican Women.

"I want to talk a little bit about the Kiddie Parade too. I think that that was really important. It's so cute. It starts at 6 o'clock and every single year, those kids and

their families go over and above and this year, it was precious," said Dodgen.

Of course, Dodgen says Freedom Fiesta was only the start of what is going to be a bigger Fourth of July celebration in Seguin.

"And this just kicks things off for our week because we have the fireworks on the third and then we have the flag raising at 9 o'clock and then the parade and I know the River Monsters are playing on the third as well and you can watch the fireworks from there. There's just all kinds of things happening. So, it just begins our week of fun," said Dodgen.

With plenty of new faces now calling Seguin home, Dodgen wants to ensure that new residents know exactly the pride and celebration in their new hometown.

"I want them to know that the fun doesn't stop and celebrating freedom doesn't stop and that we begin the Saturday evening before the Fourth of July --- it kicks things off and then there's typically something happening all the time from there. Different organizations are doing different things from the veterans organizations to even some of the political candidates so there's always things going on.

City talks trees at local golf course

(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is responding to some concerns that have been raised about trees that are scheduled to be removed from the city's Starcke Park Golf Course. Golf Course General Manager Bruce Allen recently provided the Seguin City Council with an update on the plan. Allen says the trees are being removed as part of the total overhaul of the golf course. Allen says the city's Golf Advisory Board met and reviewed the tree removal plan. He says the board agreed that most of those trees needed to come down for a variety of reasons.

"The board reviewed every single tree that is on the list and they unanimously agreed to remove all the trees that were declared a safety hazard. They agreed to remove all of the trees where the new irrigation lake is going to go. The five trees that the architects wanted to accommodate some design changes, they unanimously agreed that the palm trees along River Drive West were a little bit out of place and so they are going to be taken up and then we had eight trees that the architects were concerned about shade issues. So, we looked at them and discussed each one and we are going to keep six of those eight and give them a chance. Some of them, if we have to take them down, they are in areas where we won't destroy too much turf doing it which helps too," said Allen.

Based on reports that the city received from arborists who examined them, some of the trees are not in good shape, but some others needed to come down because they would interfere with play at the redesigned Starcke Park Golf Course.

"The final category were some that the architects

decided that they kind of interfered with the play and we decided to keep five of those six. The big one that is going to give a lot of heartache is the one on 13 but it is going to block the Tee shot. It will block about a third of the green and we would have had to pay to move the Tee box over and put a new cart path in and the board unanimously agreed to remove that," said Allen.

More than 50 trees are expected to be removed as part of this plan. Allen says the city does have a plan to replace some of those trees, but those new trees would not necessarily end up on the golf course. The tree replacement is part of the city code, and Allen says they will abide by those rules. He says they want to look at the best placement for the trees, which will represent the best overall value for the community.

"We have a tree trust fund. We will be paying into that and it can be used to plant trees anywhere and there are places in the golf course that we can put those but the problem is the code also requires you to irrigate them -- keep them alive. So, if we planted 40 trees, we would have to put those big bags around them for a year or so would mean hiring a part-timer just to keep them full and then we would need to run irrigation over to those things which would be like $1,500 per tree and if we put 40 trees in, two-thirds of the money will go to irrigation," said Allen.

Assistant City Manager Rick Cortes explained the tree replacement rules. He says it's not a tree-for-tree requirement.

Museum, continued.

She hopes to attract even more locals to the museum. She says they each have their own incredible stories and experiences.

"And we would also encourage citizens to please come tell us your stories. We want to start archiving your stories and this would be a perfect chance to get your feet wet," said Brawner.

She adds that the museum also has a number of military photos that need to be identified and hopes that the public can come out and help.

"We also need some military pictures identified from World War Il and World War I. So, if you come in, we'd really appreciating seeing if you can identify any of these people for us," said Brawner.

Hours are Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, the museum this Thursday, July 4 will be open a little longer allowing for more folks to come in and enjoy the display.

While there is no cost, donations are encouraged at the door.  The Heritage Museum is located at 114 N. River St.

Trees, continued.

Planting a young sapling to replace a healthy, mature tree would not be a fair replacement for those existing trees.

"We actually go by caliper inch of the tree so it won't be tree for tree. It won't be a one inch caliper tree replacing a 20 inch tree so we would have to go by the number of inches," said Cortes.

This means a much larger number of new trees will need to be planted to replace the trees being removed from the golf course. Again, those trees don't have to be planted on the course. The

Mayor, continued.

So, come on down and Central Park is kind of where it all starts often times and so come on down because I really think you will be amazed of what we do here in town," said Dodgen.

In addition to Saturday's Freedom Fiesta, another large crowd came out for day two of celebrations with this year's Patriotic Concert held on Sunday night in Central Park.

Of course, the remaining events include the annual Fireworks Fiesta at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, in

city could find other places where the trees would provide better benefits for the entire community.

Allen says they are bringing tree experts back out to take another look at some of the trees. Once that's done, they'll have a better idea of how much money will be available in the Tree Trust Fund, which will pay for the installation of the new trees.

"Right now, I'm estimating between $65,000 and $75,000 but we are having the arborists come out in a couple of weeks and go back and review all of them because I think there might be one or two they deemed a safety hazard and they are not but there might be two or three others that

Starcke Park. Take your radios with you because KWED will provide patriotic music during the show. The Downtown Business Alliance sponsors the patriotic music for the fireworks show exclusively.

The celebration continues on Thursday, July 4. The annual flag raising ceremony begins at 9 a.m. Thursday in Central Park; and the city's Biggest Small Town Fourth of July Parade in Texas begins at 10 a.m. Thursday on Austin Street in downtown Seguin.

were deemed safe but they are not because they had three different arborists our there so they are going to come and document every single one. So, it's somewhere in that range and there's three at the end of the driving range that are dead so we will take them out," said Allen.

The city is currently developing a plan that will spell out where the new trees should be planted. The golf course designer has suggested that they not be added to areas of play on the course, but the staff is looking at other areas near the course outside of the area of play. They are also looking at other areas in town that could benefit from planting new trees.
