Governor Greg Abbott establishes statewide face coverings

(Austin) -- Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's mandatory order r e q u i r i n g individuals to wear face mask for all counties in the state of Texas that currently have more than 20 cases of C O V I D - 1 9 continues today as people return to work and other daily priorities. The executive order, enforced just prior to the Fourth of July weekend, requires all Texans to wear a face covering over the nose and mouth in public spaces. The Governor on Thursday issued the proclamation also giving mayors and county judges the ability to impose restrictions on some outdoor gatherings of over 10 people, and making it mandatory that, with certain exceptions, people cannot be in groups larger than 10 and must maintain six feet of social distancing from others. "Wearing a face covering in public is proven to be one of the most effective ways we have to slow the spread of COVID-19,” said Governor Abbott. “We have the ability to keep businesses open and move our economy forward so that Texans can continue to

Guadalupe County sharing new changes in COVID testing by the state By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Everything, including going from a nasal to a mouth swab, is reportedly changing on the state level when it comes to COVID-19 testing. That's according to Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator and fire marshal.

Being at " So ( Wednesday), we had two lines all the testing sites, I think this will be set up and we had six people being our seventh one now but just seeing tested at a time as opposed to one car at a time," said Pinder. Pinder says another change to state testing is that those wishing to get tested no longer have to show or report symptoms to register.

Pinder says beginning today, the military will no longer be doing the testing at statewide mobile sites including here in Seguin. Plus, Pinder says a new testing system has already been introduced for those signing up at free mobile test sites. "The governor has deactivated the teams and letting the National Guard actually go back to their areas and so the testing is going to be turned over to private companies and then when the testing starts, they've changed the way they test now. So prior to (Wednesday), it was all a nasal swab so the military would come in. They would do a nasal swab and collect that sample. Now, you are administering the test to yourself. Big Game Rewind – the area’s top sports moments of 2019-20: Seguin Volleyball - the five-set district road win over Kerrville-Tivy -Mike McBride, Sports Director(Seguin) - We continue to look back and revisit the best moments in high school sports for the teams in the KWED/ Seguin Daily News coverage area that completed their seasons during the 201920 school year. The fifth installment in the series focuses on the Seguin volleyball team's signature moment, a 3-2 road rally past KerrvilleTivy to open the second round of the District 26-5A schedule on October 1.

than any of Tivy's set wins (25-18, 25-21, 25-20) in the first meeting. Seguin dug deep, awakened from its slumber, and staved off a possible sweep with a commanding 25-15 win in the third set. The Matadors were just as dominant in the fourth set, knotting up the match at 2-2 with a 2516 triumph.

There was nothing left to do at that point but go ahead and finish the improbable rally with a notch in the win column, which Seguin did by a 15-11 final in the fifth and deciding set. Julianna Harrington led the Matadors' balanced attack up front with 11 kills. Riley Brittain and Leslie Muenchow supported that effort with nine kills

The Matadors were 5-3 in district play at the mid-point of the 26-5A slate and riding a four-match winning streak after recovering from a 1-3 start against district opponents.

Those scores were actually more lopsided

Reagan Schmidt contributed with 2.5 blocks, Harrington and Taylor Bode added two apiece, and Julie Kocian finished with 1.5. Amasti Canales was prolific at the service line with seven aces and sparked Seguin's defensive effort with 16 digs. Riley Brittain added 13 digs, Reese Brittain nine, and Brinley Beicker was a key factor in the outcome with seven digs and six service aces. The Mats went on to extend their winning streak to seven matches before falling to district champion Boerne-Champion in three sets on Oct. 11.

Hoping to keep that momentum going, coach Kristi Stanley's squad faced the daunting task of opening the second round of district with a road match against a Tivy team that swept the Matadors 3-0 in late August at Goldie Harris Gym. The first two sets provided little indication that the rematch would produce a different result, as the Antlers rolled to 25-16 and 25-15 wins.

apiece, and Brittain set for a team-high 14 assists. Freshman Reese Brittain chipped in with 12 assists.

Seguin would finish 11-5 in district play, tied with McCollum for third place, and end up with the fourth playoff seed before falling in the bi-district bracket of 5A Region IV to Dripping Springs.

The Seguin volleyball team, shown here during Homecoming festivities last fall, rallied back from a two-set seficit to stun the Tivy Antlers in Kerrville on Oct. 1. Photo courtesy of Seguin Matador VB Twitter page.

Tivy finished second in the 26-5A standings behind Boerne-Champion with a 13-3 district record. The Antlers went 31-12 overall and advanced to the second round of the UIL playoffs before coming up short to eventual regional champion Alamo Heights.
