SPD school supply collection now underway

(Seguin) – The Seguin PD is calling for some backup as it prepares families for back to school. The police department is again seeking school supply donations for its Back to School at the Pool event scheduled for Aug. 3.

Sarah Wallace, the community engagement officer for the Seguin PD, says bins are now available in the PD lobby.

“Our goal is to help about 250 children this year, so we are collecting backpacks. You can donate clear backpacks which are even better, but we will collect any type. We are collecting notebooks, writing utensils, folders, monetary donations, and our goal is to just try to stuff those backpacks and the day of the event will be on Aug. 5 starting at 10 a.m. in the Coliseum parking lot. It will be a first come, first serve basis. You will need to have the child with you to get the backpack so we can keep a good honor system and keep it fair for everybody,” said Wallace.

Thank You Seguin! City appreciates the work that went into another great 4th of July

(Seguin) -- The start of summer is always a busy time for the Seguin Main Street Program as we host the Central Park Summer Concert Series, the Biggest Small-Town Fourth of July Parade, and work with our partners to host community events downtown. All this activity would not be possible without the support of sponsors, partners, volunteers, and the community.

The 2023 Central Park Summer Concert Series featured music from the Comal Community Band, Dirty River Jazz Band, Natalie Rose, Groove Factor, and the San Antonio Symphonic Band. All the bands put on great shows to large crowds. Additionally, local food trucks and nonprofits were at the concerts selling delicious food and beverages.

Supply, continued.

Wallace says other city departments are also joining in on the collection effort. She says it’s truly a team effort in ensuring that kids have what they need.

“It’s a great team effort from a few departments within the city. We’ve put out an email just to invite other departments who want to join in to help us with collection efforts and the Seguin Fire Department, Seguin Utilities and Human Resources volunteered their time to try to collect some donations as well as help out in any way that they could,” said Wallace.

Donation boxes will be placed in the PD lobby Mondays through Fridays until 5 p.m. Donations will be collected up until Thursday, Aug. 3.

Policing, continued.

“It kind of goes hand in hand with our Citizen’s Police Academy. However, this just focuses on the topic of Use of Force only and our Citizens Police Academy, we cover it for about two hours. This just gives us a way more in-depth conversation where we can get into a lot of really great open dialogue – a lot of really great questions regarding police and use of force. We go over our use of force statistics at Seguin PD, our policies, our less lethal weapons to show the different tools that the officers have as well as go over mental health and de-escalation and then of course at the end, the applicants are able to go through the simulator and we actually put them through some use of force scenarios so the whole class is really cool. You get to dive in deeper into such an important topic,” said Wallace.

The free 4-week long academy will be held every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning July 20. The class is limited so participants are

asked to register as soon as possible. Week One will be the introduction to the course. Week Two, will be use of force statistics and policies and less lethal weapons. Week Three will include mental health and deescalation while Week Four will focus on defensive tactics and use of force simulator.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. A background check will be required for each individual prior to the start of class. Applications are available at the police department or online at www.seguintexas.gov/1114/Use-ofForce-Academy.

July, continued.

The concert series would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. Thank you to Anders Pierce Realty, LLC, Angel Pest Control, Inc., CMC Steel Texas, First United Bank, Five Star Title, Guadalupe County United Way, GVEC, Jack Walker CPA, Seguin Beauty School, Seguin Electric Company, The Koehler Company, Tri-County A/C & Heating, and TRC for sponsoring. The Central Park Summer Concert Series is presented by the City of Seguin Main Street Program.

The concert series led right up to Seguin’s Independence Day Celebrations which started with Freedom Fiesta. Seguin Main Street appreciates all the hard work KWED 1580 puts into hosting this community festival in downtown Seguin. The fiesta brought thousands of people to downtown Seguin to celebrate and enjoy some great music.

Bacteria Makes Swimming Unsafe At Some Texas Beaches (Austin, TX) -- Summer in Texas is prime time for a trip to the coast, but a new study found that could get you pretty sick from playing in the surf. Nearly five-dozen beaches were found to be unsafe for swimming thanks to high levels of fecal bacteria. The group Environment Texas says most of it comes from aging infrastructure, especially when broken sewer pipes leak into the water. Farm runoff is also an issue. Cole Park Beach, which is just south of downtown Corpus Christi, had the highest levels of bacteria with Galveston Beach also making the list.

About 24-percent said they want a president in their 60s, and 17-percent said they want a president in their 40s. Only three-percent said the best age for a president is in their 70s or older.

AZ Governor Greenlights Over-The-Counter Birth Control (Phoneniz, AZ) -- Arizonans 18 and up will soon be able to go to their local pharmacy and buy contraceptives without a doctor’s prescription. The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS is now a free digital newspaper published every business day.

The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS offers a wide variety of ad sizes and advertising plans and contact information is available on our website.
