Gas giveaway this Saturday Free gasoline courtesy of local churches

(Seguin) – This weekend, local families will be riding around with more than just a free tank of gas. They’ll be riding around with hopefully a new sense of unity. That’s at least the hope for Evangelist Sharrell Kemp of ReachUp Ministries in San Antonio.

ReachUp Ministries on Saturday will be partnering with Sweet Home Baptist Church in Seguin. The congregations will be looking at making a positive impact on the community by filling up the vehicles of local families with a free tank of gas. The gas is geared for those who could use a little help. To qualify for free gas, a child or children must be inside each participating vehicle.

Kemp says a recent trip to Seguin and the partnership with the small Sweet Home Church community south of Seguin, gave rise to the Summer Gas Giveaway in which motorists can stop by VP Racing Fuel Pic N Pac located at 630 Court St. to receive free gas while supplies last. She says like most growing communities, there can

often be a sense of a disconnect between the leadership and residents who live there. She says this weekend is all about helping to better strengthen that relationship.

“The pastor and I was talking one Sunday at Sweet Home and he was saying the historical history of that area Sweet Home, how the school has been there which they are celebrating 100 years this coming month, next month and how the community has changed and how a lot of people don’t know where to turn and who to go to and so my husband and I took a trip there. We just rode around the neighborhood, reminiscing of how we hung out and played around this corner and went to this store -- found out this store wasn’t there anymore. So, we happened to stop at this service station, and we ran into the manager and there were some people in the store and I asked them, ‘who is the mayor of Seguin?’ Only one person knew it. That was the manager. Gas pg. 3

Outdoor burn ban goes into effect

(Seguin) – Guadalupe County is putting a lid on outdoor burning at least for the next 90 days.

At the advice of Guadalupe County Fire Marshal Patrick Pinder, commissioners unanimously ordered the outdoor burn ban for the unincorporated areas of Guadalupe County.

To provide prospective, officials say in just two days, the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) increased from 501 to 513.

Pinder says things are just too dry and too risky.

“Looking around at some of the areas that are near us, Comal County just went into a burn ban last week. They are in the mid-500s. We are starting to see some increase in fires since June 26. We have seen around 20 grassfires in the county. Three or four of those were caused by fireworks but outside of that, it’s folks who are burning in the area. Fires are getting away from them. In Hays County, I don’t know if you saw but there was an approximately 150-acre fire that started over there over the weekend, and it spread. I think it got up to about 200 acres,” said Pinder.

Pinder says there are still ways that folks can burn under this ban ordinance. He says it’s just about being as careful as possible and making sure authorities know exactly what is going on.

“If we do get a significant amount of rain or things change obviously, we have that capability. With the burn ban, it does not mean that folks can’t burn, they just have to contact our office just like the process has

been before where we would come out and do a site visit and issue those specific permits. It excludes agriculture burns things like that so you can still burn the trash in the barrel with the cover, so we are not limiting the necessary burns but just the brush piles. We are trying to restrict those,” said Pinder.

Agreeing to the decision to initiate the burn ban was Guadalupe County Commissioner Greg Seidenberger. Seidenberger says the extreme heat alone, is not helping anyone at this point.

“Next week or so, there’s no rain in the forecast, only hot. Patrick, you are failing us. You always bring us rain. Every time, we put a burn ban (on the agenda), we get rain,” said Seidenberger. “I think it’s prudent to do it, be proactive and get the burn ban on and save us a few brush fires and potentials.”

Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says while making this decision can be hard -- this time, it’s pretty easy.

“Everything is burning up. It’s getting crunchy with the grass. A lot of rain early in the year promoted a lot of grass growth and fuel but then you’ve got corn and other crops and stuff that are just being started to harvest now. I was really worried about the Fourth of July. It’s a dangerous time of year with the weather. It will get better. It’s just now there yet. We expect to see 100-degree days for a long time yet,” said Kutscher.

The burn ban order officially went into effect at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Seguin ISD invites folks to help welcome new deputy superintendent

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD community, especially parents, are invited to welcome a new top leader to the school district’s administration team. A meet and greet will be held today for Dr. Veronica Vijil, the new deputy superintendent for the Seguin ISD. The district earlier this summer announced Dr. Vijil’s appointment. That’s according to Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD.

"The Seguin ISD is excited to welcome Veronica Vijil to our district and to our community. She is coming to serve as the deputy superintendent and in her role, she replaces Dr. Marc Cantu who previously filled that position for about five years with us. Dr. Cantu as some will remember was promoted for a new program within Region 20 doing work for the Texas Education Agency. So with his promotion in that area, we are glad to have Dr. Vijil come and join us.

Gas, continued.

She does have extensive experience in public education here in Texas including most recently being the superintendent of Fabens ISD which is in the El Paso area so as as former superintendent, we are confident that she will be able to come in and make a big impact here in Seguin," said Hoffmann.

Prior to her superintendency, which began in 2019, Dr. Vijil was Canutillo ISD’s associate superintendent. She has worked in

The customers did not know who their mayor was. I was like ‘who is the police chief?’ They did not know,” said Kemp.

Kemp says it was this visit to Seguin that again prompted them to extend this sense of unity and be of service to local families.

“We prayed and we cried out and I saw us coming together in a vision. Seguin coming together with the churches there, sharing all resources and coming together and my husband and I just happened to go up the street and go to McQueeney (Wuest’s/VP headquarters) and asked the owner if we could have a gas giveaway because in San Antonio, a grandmother said, ‘we can get everything to assist us, but no one ever gives us gas to get from one doctor’s appointment to the next.’ So, therefore, it birthed the gas giveaway and the gas giveaway in San Antonio, we’ve been having it for six, seven years so when I went into that store, it just sprung on my husband and myself to bring that to a foundation base so people would know who their leaders are. So, it’s the churches and community coming together,” said Kemp.

What has been most impressive for these churches is the outpouring of support from city of Seguin

education for over 30 years having also served Ysleta and Spring ISDs.

Hoffmann says he hopes folks will take advantage of meeting her personally especially before the start of another busy school year.

"We are inviting our school community, our families, parents, business partners to come today to Seguin ISD at Central Office between 5:45 and 6:25 this evening. It will be a come and go event. You are welcome to come in and say hello and welcome and introduce yourself to Dr. Vijil during that time," said Hoffmann.

As deputy superintendent, Dr. Vijil will oversee the day-to-day operations of learning and innovation while working closely with campus administration teams. Again, the meet and greet will be held today from 5:45 to 6:25 p.m.

July 1 was Dr. Vijil’s first official day on the job.

leaders. Kemp says city leaders, including Mayor Donna Dodgen, will be among those there to help pump gas.

“So, as they are pumping gas, they will meet their mayor. They will meet their fire chief. They will meet the owner of the service station where they will pump gas. They will meet churches and pastors in their neighborhood. They will get information and resources of where they can find help. So, we are coming together in unity to do just that – nurturing a love that lasts and hopefully and prayerfully, the mayor – well she cochaired all of this. She sat at the table, and she got all the officials together and we worked this out to be able to serve the community and hopefully, this will be an annual event. They put it on the calendar. So, it’s going to be every third Saturday in July,” said Kemp.

In addition to complimentary gasoline, a bouncy house for kids will be set up on the lawn of the Sebastopol House located next door to the gas station. Sparky the Fire Dog, courtesy of the Seguin Fire Department, will also be making a special appearance. First responders will also be on hand showcasing fire trucks and police cruisers.

Event organizers expect to provide gas for approximately 150 vehicles. The Summer Gas Giveaway will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Again, to receive free gas, at least one child needs to be in the vehicle during the event.

TLU Track and Field Earns SCAC Team Sportsmanship Awards

SUWANEE, GA --  In an announcement made today from the league office, 10 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) spring programs were recognized as a 2023 Sportsmanship Team recipient for their respective sport. Texas Lutheran Men’s Track and Field was awarded the award for Men’s Track and Field for the second consecutive season while Women’s Track and Field earned the honors for the first time in program history.

The SCAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee instituted the award prior to the 2016-17 academic year in an effort to honor the team that best portrays good sportsmanship and fair play from the players and coaches during the season. The spring awards are presented in baseball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s track and field. Earlier in the academic year, fall and winter sports programs were recognized with Texas Lutheran also earning the honors in volleyball.

The awards were voted on by each member institution’s SAAC, with each individual group ranking the top three teams in each sport. The first place selections were awarded five points, second place earned three points and third place earned one point. Points were then totaled to select the conference’s overall winner.

TN Ban On Gender Affirming Care To Take Effect

(Nashville, TN) -- Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors will be allowed to take effect. The ban was originally going to take effect on July 1st, but a judge halted its implementation after the ACLU claimed it interfered with parental rights. However, over the weekend, an appeals court overturned that ruling and reinstated the ban. The ACLU’s legal challenges will still move forward even after the law takes effect. If the court decides to uphold the ACLU’s appeal, the ban will once again be shut down. Tennessee is one of approximately 20 states that have passed laws prohibiting gender-affirming care.

Calls For FDA Probe Into PRIME Energy Drinks

(New York, NY) -- Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is calling on the FDA to investigate PRIME Energy drinks for their high caffeine levels. Speaking Sunday, the New York Democrat claimed the drink is being targeted to children as “one of the summer’s hottest beverages for kids.” A 12-ounce can contains 200 milligrams of caffeine, which is equal to about six cans of Coca-Cola or nearly two Red Bulls. Founded by YouTube stars Logan Paul and KSI, PRIME has gained popularity among teens on social media, despite a label on the product noting it’s “not recommended for children under 18.”

The Department of Social and Health Services was criticized for its “lack of foresight, creativity, planning, and timely response to a crisis of its own making.” Washington has previously been found in contempt of the same agreement on two other occasions, and has already faced 400-million-dollars in fines.
