Filler up! Seguin Mayor ready for Summer Gas Giveaway
(Seguin) – Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen says she’s ready to roll up her sleeves and help fill up those gas tanks. Dodgen will be among the city leaders and church volunteers who will be providing one free tank of gas during Saturday’s Summer Gas Giveaway.
The event designed for families in need will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the VP Racing Fuel Pic N Pac store location at 630 W. Court St.
The only thing drivers need to ensure is that there is at least one child present in the vehicle during pumping.
As previously reported, the gas giveaway is being made possible thanks to ReachUp Ministries in San Antonio and Sweet Home
Baptist Church in Seguin.
Dodgen says she is excited to be partnering with these church communities in hopes of making a positive impact in the community.
“I think it’s a wonderful idea. That group approached us and felt that it was a calling to come to Seguin to do this. I admire that and we all wanted to honor that. One of their goals was for people to meet first responders, to meet public officials, to gather and meet other people in the public that might be in a place of decision makers and so I think that is important as well to be out there and to be available and so I thought this was a wonderful opportunity,” said Dodgen.

CAREER LADDER
Texas Lineman’s Rodeo Competition gets underway this Saturday in Seguin
(Seguin) – Get ready to rodeo! Seguin is again the destination for utilities journeymen and apprentice linemen who have all traveled from across the state to compete in this weekend’s Texas Lineman’s Rodeo at Nolte Island Park.
The best of the best linemen began arriving on Thursday and are gearing up for the open-to-the public event in which the men and women will be attending training sessions, practicing essential safety skills and competing for professional recognition.
The contest on Saturday will include utility team competitions such as pole climbing, hurt man rescue, a mystery obstacle pole event, and a team barbecue cookoff.
Ready to welcome all teams and cheer on Seguin is Mayor Donna Dodgen. Dodgen says the city is always well represented and looks forward to another year of success.
"I want to tell the community to come on out and I know it's hot but it's an interesting, interesting event and our folks, our women and men that are in that electrical department have been practicing. They have been involved in this for years and years and years and go to nationals almost every single time," said Dodgen.

Dodgen says she never passes up a wonderful gift for the community and looks forward to seeing the event unfold this Saturday afternoon.
“They do it in San Antonio from my understanding and it’s very well received. I would like to do it here and then see if we can do it on a yearly basis with them. I think it’s

a great idea. I know that they are limited in how much and they have some ways in which they manage who and what and how and all of those sorts of things that has worked for them in a larger city and so I just think it’s a really good thing and I think we should embrace that and when someone feels that there is a calling to do something for our city and our hometown if it’s within our
The Texas Lineman’s Rodeo was originally designed to offer the State of Texas line workers a way to showcase their skills in a family-oriented, fun, and competitive environment. Dodgen says in many cases, the rodeo is the only way for the line worker’s family and community to witness first-hand what being a lineman is all about.
"I know for them, it's a chance to show off their skills and what they do and that's important for our community to see because just flipping on a light switch, it just doesn't happen. There are things that have to be done on a daily basis and especially when we have had emergencies which we've had quite a few in the past few years -- that they come and take care of it and they take care of it quickly. Our community is very very blessed in that and so I think this is a good time to show our appreciation and for them to showcase what do and what they can do," said Dodgen.
City of Seguin Apprentices who will be competing include Nathan Thiry; Taylor Ross, Steven Eldridge and Joe Cruz.
This year’s Journeyman Team includes AJ Martinez; Eli Santos and Derek Ranft.
Also displaying their skills at the grill will be members of this year’s BBQ cook-off team. Employees of Team Real BBQ include Bobby Hyatt, Jimmy Herrera, and Freddy King. They’ll be competing for the best brisket, pork ribs and chicken. The contests get underway at 6:45 a.m. and and will continue through mid morning.
purvey to do, then I think we should do it,” said Dodgen.
Also supporting the vehicles and families will be members of the Seguin Police and Seguin Fire Departments. Dodgen says Saturday’s event will truly be a team effort.
“We certainly wanted things to be safe so we called in the police to help with traffic control and then the fire to be there so that folks can get to know them and see their equipment and that sort of thing and now, I’m grateful because it’s going to be so hot that if something happens, I want someone who can respond quickly to be there. So, that’s a really good idea to have them there but they are going to have Sparky (the Fire Dog) and some other things so that folks can know their first responders and know that they are part of the community and that they are here to be a part of that community and I don’t want anyone to ever be afraid of our police or our fire or any of us who are public officials,” said Dodgen.
Event organizers say they expect to provide gas for approximately 150 vehicles.

Childhood Cancer Diagnoses Continue To Trend Up
(Washington, DC) -- Childhood cancer diagnoses have been trending slightly upwards for more than a decade. A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute says that there were over 14-thousand new diagnoses in kids in 2019, or about 117 new cases for every million children and teens. But the lead author of the study adds that, overall, the disease is rare in the age group and the increases are small. He also noted that past studies show increased survival rates.
EPA Report: 50% Of U.S. Beaches Contaminated Including NY-NJ Beaches
(Washington, DC) -- A report by the Environmental Protection Agency has alarming news about our nation’s beaches, including those in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The EPA says half the beaches in the U.S. are contaminated with fecal matter which can cause serious intestinal issues. It’s believed that about 90-million people are sickened by water-borne illnesses each year but that most incidents go unreported. The Gulf Coast, the West Coast and Great Lakes were the worst in the nation for fecal contamination with New York’s beaches the dirtiest in the Tri-State area. Tanner Beach in Suffolk County is one of nearly 350 in New York that were name-checked. The EPA also said Atlantic County beaches in New Jersey had the most potentially alarming days in the Tri-State but that beaches in Fairfield County, Connecticut weren’t far behind.
Court Order Requires Warning Signs To Be Posted At Cigarette Sales Displays
(Fresno, CA) -- More than 200-thousand stores across the country will soon have signs posted warning people about the risks of smoking. A federal judge says the goal of mandating the signs is to address health risks and the addictive nature of cigarettes. One sign reads “Cigarette companies intentionally designed cigarettes with enough nicotine to create and sustain addiction.” The order states the signs must be posted by September 30th and remain until at least June 30th, 2025.
VA Seeing Highest Number Of Syphilis Cases In 30+ Years
(Richmond, VA) -- Health officials are sounding the alarm about a highly contagious sexually-transmitted disease. Virginia is dealing with the most syphilis cases in more than three decades. The number of infections jumped 22-percent just in the first four months of this year. Doctors are especially concerned with how it’s spreading to women and their babies. They say getting tested is the easiest and best way to start treatment early and to prevent serious health problems.
