Family protest the need for more staffing at local nursing home, questions care By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – A written statement released Monday by Regency Integrated Health Services, the parent company for Guadalupe Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (GVNC), is apparently still not enough for one local woman and her family who felt that they had no choice but to protest the care that was reportedly being provided to their loved one. Stefanie Taylor says it was just in June that she was forced to put the care of her mother into the arms of the nursing staff at GVNC located at 1210 Eastwood Drive. This past weekend, however, Taylor says that care was questioned after getting an earful from one of its nurses who apparently told her about the lack of care being provided to not only COVID-19 patients but to all patients at the facility. “So, on Saturday morning at 8:30, I started calling the nursing home and I couldn’t get through. It just rang and rang until about 10 o’clock, I finally got through to someone and the nurse that I spoke with at that point told me that she was not the nurse on the COVID unit and when I asked to speak with that

nurse, she explained to me that there was no nurse on that unit – that none of the nurses wanted to work the COVID-19 unit for fear of contracting the virus. She

also explained to me that there were no nurses’ aides on that hallway also. She also went into detail about how it was her opinion that no one had been on that

hallway all night. That there had been no nurses or nursing staff from 10 o’clock the night before. I was furious. I was scared for my mom and for all those

patients in that hallway. I could not for the life of me figure out how were they getting their medicines, how were they eating, how were they going to the bathroom. It was just beyond me and like I said, I was furious,” said Taylor. Furious at what she had just been told by this nurse, Taylor demanded that she be allowed to speak with GVNC Director Brooks Kersh or as Taylor refers to him, Mr. Brooks. “She had said that he had actually put on PPE (personal protection equipment) and had gone down to the COVID unit and was checking on patients. I asked her to go get him. She said she could get as far as the doors but not get to close because she herself did not want to contract the virus and she hollered down the hall for Mr. Brooks and he did not answer. I told her to call him on his cell phone. She said ‘well I do not think he’ll answer,’ and I said you know what, call him anyway. So, she called him, and he refused to come to the phone so I told her that I would continue calling until I got an answer from him. So, I called and of course, I did not get an answer from him,” said Taylor. See GVNC, page 2

was a problem. I even called the Seguin Police Department because although it is not a criminal problem or issue, I felt like I needed someone to hear me. My sister was able to get a hold of someone through dispatch and they dispatched a sergeant over there from the Seguin PD and it was told to us that he went and beat on the door until someone answered. They answered and the administrator assured him that they did have proper staff in place, but Mr. (Kersh) Brooks still wouldn’t talk to me,” said Taylor. Being outside holding signs eventually led to Taylor’s meeting with Kersh who assured her that patients were being taken care of. According to Taylor, his response pointed to a disgruntled employee who reportedly took it upon herself to mislead her.

GVNC, continued from page 1 As a result, Taylor and several members of her family found themselves outside the nursing facility on Saturday protesting not having answers and demanding that they speak to those in charge. “So, my family and I decided we would go over and stand in front of the nursing home with our signs because I felt like that was our only way to get our point across. I wanted to talk to this administrator. I wanted people to know there

“In his words, I must have spoken to someone who was a disgruntled employee because the information that this employee gave me was simply not true and that he told me that they have plenty of PPE. That they have staff that is assigned to these different hallways including the COVID-19 hallway. So, at that point, I had no choice but to believe him. Now, that night, Saturday night at midnight and again at 4 a.m., I called the nursing home to find out if there was someone designated to the COVID hallway as Mr. Brooks had told me that there would be and there was not. There were two nurses working the entire facility,” said Taylor. Taylor says she understands the pressure and the workload that GVNC must be under and believes that the employees at the nursing center

do seriously care about their patients. It’s just the question of staffing needs and whether the local facility is getting the help they deserve from those in management and or from their parent company Regency. “The contact that I have had with them has always been very caring, very accommodative, very willing to go above and beyond and honestly, that hasn’t changed with the staff. That hasn’t changed with any of the nurses or the nursing assistants. They are all very nice, very willing to help me and very accommodative. I just think that they are understaffed and what I want is for their corporate office to realize these people are working very hard and they need help whether that means they have to move some of these people to another one of their facilities where it is fully staffed or hire agency nurses. I don’t know what the answer is on that side, but something needs to be done,” said Taylor. Taylor says her fight in ensuring that nursing homes are not forgotten has only begun. She says there is a serious need for the state to investigate nursing homes and ensure that the steps that need to be taken are taken. She says family members are these patients first and often times, only advocates. “I’m trying to be in contact with Governor Abbott by email. I am going to make him listen to me. We need to open up these nursing homes. This is ridiculous. Yes, we have COVID-19 running rampant in these nursing homes. We have seen the numbers rise but it is not coming from the visitors because there haven’t been visitors

since the middle of March. The people that are getting infected right now in the nursing homes with COVID-19, it is coming from the employees so if it’s coming from the employees, let me get in there – glove up, gown up, mask up, take my temperature, ask me your questions but get me in there and let me help take care of my mother. That’s what I’m getting at,” said Taylor. According to Taylor, an investigation into her claims against GVNC has already begun. She has also already been contacted by an investigator. In response to Taylor’s allegations, Brooke Ladner, senior vice president for business development with Regency Integrated stated “we cannot comment on hearsay and speculation but I can tell you that the Guadalupe Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation is staffed by healthcare professionals at all times. This includes the center’s COVID Unit which is isolated from the rest of the facility and has its own dedicated team of healthcare workers who are committed to caring for patients who test positive for the virus. While there were a number of staff members absent from work this past weekend for various reasons, we did have plenty of supplemental staff to cover shifts and care for our patients.” Like GVNC, most if not all local nursing facilities are currently closed to visitors and to any outside guests as to help stop the spread of the virus. Most of these residents have not had any physical contact with family members since as early as March.

Seguin ISD invites families to today’s Virtual Town Hall Meeting

By Cindy AguirreHerrera

(Seguin) – Seguin ISD families are encouraged to learn more about the upcoming school year by hearing directly from district leaders during tonight’s Virtual Town Hall Meeting. Sean Hoffmann, the public information officer for the Seguin ISD, says like other previous Town Hall meetings, the district felt it was important to keep its families engaged as it sets the course for the district’s future. “For the past three years, we have hosted Town Hall Meetings for the Seguin ISD community usually one in the fall and one in the spring. Of course with the onset of COVID back in mid-March, with school closures, here it is July and we figured its high time

to have one to really share with our students and our parents some of the ideas and considerations that we are looking at for the Fall of 2020. Hoffmann says the webinar set for this afternoon will not only share the district’s

latest plans but also its commitment to adapt and or modify them as we navigate together through this COVID-19 pandemic. “Only July 7, the Texas Education Agency announced that Texas Public Schools will be open for

students this fall five days a week for any students who want to attend so as a school system, we are preparing for that as well as an option for those parents who are not comfortable sending their children to school in which they will be afforded the opportunity to learn remotely as they did in the spring,” said Hoffmann. “There’s a lot of considerations. There’s a lot to look at. There’s a lot to prepare for. We are in the middle of that right now and with this Town Hall Meeting, we want encourage our Seguin ISD families to tune in later this afternoon at 5 o’clock and join the webinar.” The best way to access the password and log-in credentials for today’s 5 p.m. Virtual Town Hall meeting will be through the Seguin ISD’s Facebook page or via its website at www.seguinisd.net.

Big Game Rewind - OT heroics lift Mats over Harlandale

BIG GAME REWIND, continued from page 4

After Benavides had gashed the Matadors with dribble penetration for a good stretch of the second half, Seguin head coach Dwayne Gerlich spent the timeout before Harlandale’s final possession making sure his team was prepared to defend the pick-and-roll.

I considered the 52-47 comefrom-behind home win over another playoff team, Kerrville-Tivy, on Jan. 14, but the fact that the Harlandale game ended on a buzzer-beating shot in overtime ultimately gave that contest “So we said, he’s going to go off the edge. a little screen, we’re not going to double it, but we’re going to show Harlandale had the ball with a really hard and not let him get to chance to set up a potential game the basket,” Gerlich said. “What he winning shot with 10.58 seconds did was he went off a screen, he reto play in overtime. The Indians versed it, and we showed again, and dialed up a high screen-and-roll he lost his footing, and that was the for point guard Chris Benavidez whole key – they executed the deout beyond the three-point line, fense exactly like we wanted it.” Seguin’s Gerrit Twitero came up with a steal when Benavidez lost control of his dribble, then fired a pass down-court to Vela on the fast break. Vela caught it with three seconds to play, dribbled toward the lane, and softly dropped the winner in off the glass from a step beyond layup range.

Vela led four Matadors in double figures with 14 points. Christopher James added 12, Twitero 11, and R.J. Acuna 10. Tyson Coleman contributed seven points off the bench, all in the second quarter. Joey Ornales had three, while Kaleb McCann and Jhalen Mickles finished with two apiece.

“They make things tough on you just bringing the ball up the floor,” Gerlich said. “They know how to stay down low, they do a good job of reaching in and getting some The Indians capped a 10-4 run with deflections and stuff, and then I a steal and layup by Nathaniel Es- thought our guards fought right pinoza to take a 52-49 lead with back at them.” two minutes left in regulation. Seguin took a 34-29 lead into halftime, briefly went up by seven in the third quarter, and carried a slim 4542 cushion into the fourth period.

In the post-game interview with KWED, Gerlich praised his backcourt trio of Acuna, James, and Vela for handling the constant pressure of Benavidez and Espinosa much better than they did in a Dec. 20 road loss to the Indians.

In a turnaround season whose win total more than doubled that of the previous year, the buzzer-beating overtime win over an extremely talented Harlandale bunch ranks as Seguin’s best moment of 2019-20.

Quest Says COVID-19 Testing Results Taking At Least 7 Days (Secaucus, NJ) -- A major coronavirus testing company says results are taking at least a week to get back to patients. Quest Diagnostics said the average time is seven or more days for many patients. The company explained the demand is primarily due to the rapid spread of infections in several regions of the country. Quest officials added they are limited in how quickly capacity can be added. It also said this issue isn’t just affecting Quest but the laboratory industry as a whole.

Garcia Pushes To Require Masks In Federal Buildings (Washington, DC) -- Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia wants to make face coverings mandatory in federal buildings. The Texas Democrat introduced the Wear Your Mask Act on Monday. It would require people to wear a face mask in facilities owned, leased or operated by the feds. The requirement would not be lifted until health experts determined masks don’t need to be worn anymore. Garcia explained the masks can be “the difference between life and death” and wants it part of the next coronavirus relief package.

Trump Health Officials Say Drugmakers Eye End Of Summer for COVID-19 Vaccine Production (Undated) -- Health officials say drugmakers are eyeing the end of summer to start production of a COVID-19 vaccine. The hope is to send out 300-million doses by the start of 2021. A top Trump administration official said vaccines are already being manufactured but it’s unclear if any will be effective. As of Monday, over three-pointthree-million people in the U.S. have been infected with the coronavirus and over 135-thousand have died.

(Undated) -- A new study is finding that roughly one-third of young adults are vulnerable to developing severe complications from COVID-19. The most significant risk factor appears to be smoking. Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, reviewed the answers of 84-hundred people ages 18 to 25 who participated in the National Health Interview Survey and compared them with risk indicators of developing severe symptoms of COVID-19. Those risk factors include heart conditions, diabetes, asthma, immune conditions, liver conditions, obesity, and smoking. They found that 32 percent of the group was at risk of being hospitalized or needing intensive care because of the coronavirus. The researchers said one way to decrease your risk of developing severe complications from coronavirus is to quit smoking.

He worked many years for Knytex, Hexcel, and finally before his retirement in 2010 for Plytech. Glenn inherited his love for fishing and camping from his parents. In his younger years, along with family and friends, he camped and trot-line fished just about every local part of the Guadalupe river as well as many other rivers, creeks, and lakes nearby. In later years he fished and shared many special times with family and friends during trips to Rockport. Glenn’s favorite sport was football, he enjoyed every opportunity to watch the Dallas Cowboys on TV.
