The victims, which owned a local landscape company, reportedly went over to the home with their three sons to assist Fadal’s mother who needed help moving some belongings. Later it was reported that Fadal had believed that the couple was part of an “international criminal organization” that was looking to harm his mother in retaliation for discovering that he was involved in some “alleged manipulations of the stock market. By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Changes in the school calendar could be approved tonight by the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees. Trustees will meet during a special board meeting to discuss and possibly adopt revisions in the school calendar for the 20202021 school year. The original instructional calendar was approved in February and prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those changes could also include the delay of school until Sept. 8. The Seguin ISD’s current state date is Thursday, Aug. 20. District officials, like others across the state, continue to be strung along by the Texas Education Agency as it works to supply districts with continuously changing information regarding polices, safety guidelines and/or other mandates. The changes are being supplied as districts work toward implementing individual plans for reopening this fall amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier in the summer, parents through a Seguin ISD survey, suggested that the district leave the August start date alone and not bump up the

return to school. The option to begin a week earlier was an overall effort to get kids back into the classroom sooner. The district thought that not only could the students have a little more time to catch up but that it could help in providing additional days later on in the semester should the area see a surge in COVID-19 cases. The recent spike in positive cases in the local area and across the state, however, has prompted a new outlook and approach to beginning school. This now has the district as well as others in the area considering a Sept. 8 start date. The calendar is set for approval during tonight’s special meeting, also a Team of 8 Training. That meeting will be held via Zoom beginning at 6 p.m. Although visible to the public, individuals will not be able to provide comments via the livestream. They can, however, submit comments no later than noon today. Public comments to be read during the audience with the board agenda item can be submitted to pnramirez@seguin.k12.tx.us. Credentials for logging onto the virtual meeting can be found at seguinISD.net

Seguin ISD to recycle computers into the hands of local students WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – While school districts across the state and country are searching for more resources to ensure successful online instructions this coming fall, the Seguin ISD finds itself in a position of not only ensuring Chromebooks and iPads for students across the district but also the ability to turn over several of its used computers to educationally disadvantaged students in the district. Trustees recently approved a resolution allowing the transfer of computer equipment to students in the district. Bill Lewis, the chief operating officer and associate superintendent for the Seguin ISD, says just last month, the school district approved what is referred to as the 1:1 initiative in which students are supplied with their own personal technology device. He says this program will allow all students to have unlimited access to technology whether they are in the classroom or at home. Today, this new resolution will go a step further by gifting used computers to students who the district believes can benefit from the technology in the home. “We can already pass out items and provide technology to students with the intention of them returning them to us but we can according to policy, we can declare the items end of life which most of these items are 10 years old. That we, in the past, added some memory, some things – we can only take them up to a certain operating system but for the most part, it could be something that could help us stop gap as we get through this year with a lot of unknowns to students and could

provide some technology to homes,” said Lewis. Lewis says as the district is trying to get through these difficult times, he thinks this is a great way to get another year or so out of these products so that can benefit their students especially those who don’t have a device at this time,” said Lewis. “These have to go to homes of students that are considered in need of such a device and do not have a device. The resolution is providing us the ability to – we have to create some guidelines; we have to eliminate any items on the computer that may be considered confidential. We are totally wiping them clean – starting them from scratch so there will be nothing on those computers and then we will put a process in place and declare these items end of life. These are items that were going to go to a recycler anyway because they don’t really hold any resale value. They want things that are like maybe five years out. If you are on a four- or five-year replacement cycle, people will buy stuff back from you. They don’t usually buy a 2009 computer from you, but they still have some life in them,” said Lewis. Lewis says the district’s position has always been to use things until ‘they are used up.’ Over the years, he says they’ve increased their footprint in technology for students districtwide. So, they are at an all-time high for devices. See COMPUTERS, page 3
Guadalupe County to discuss, take possible action on outdoor burn ban

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – The sweltering heat and lack of rain may just be the things to warrant an order for an outdoor burn ban during today’s meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court. Commissioners will be hearing the latest conditions from Patrick Pinder, the county’s emergency management coordinator and fire marshal. If approved, the outdoor burn ban would go into effect Tuesday for the unincorporated areas of the county and would be enforced for the next 90 days. Commissioners today will also hear from Pinder
and staff regarding the latest on the COVID-19 pandemic here in Guadalupe County. Regular updates from the Texas Department of State Health Services are provided at the beginning of each commissioners’ court meeting. Due to social distancing, the public is invited to view the meeting via video-conferencing or telephone. All instructions, along with the Commissioner’s Court agendas, may be accessed by visiting the Guadalupe County website at https://www.co.guadalupe.tx.us/commcourt/ granicus.php. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. at the Guadalupe County Courthouse.

COMPUTERS, continued from page 2
While these computers are no longer viable for state testing or other things required by the district, Lewis say they are valuable just enough for online learning in the fall. More i m p o r t a n t l y, by forwarding these computers to students in the district, he says it will allow the Seguin ISD to further support students by providing some
type of technology in homes even as the district rolls out its 1:1 initiative. “ We a r e j u s t k i n d o f m a y b e hoping that this takes a little b i t o f t h e p r e s s u r e o ff o f h o w many Chromebooks that we have to hand out and this really impacts middle school kids I think the most because we have the high school covered and then we are going to have that mostly one to one in elementary I think so we’ll have those devices ready so I
really think I’m going to try t o t a rg e t m i d d l e s c h o o l a n d maybe some Pre-k families that may need something to try t o t a rg e t t h o s e f a m i l i e s i n n e e d because we probably have 320 or so devices checked out in the middle school level right n o w t h a t w e d i d t h i s s u m m e r, 320-340 somewhere around t h e r e . S o i f I c o u l d t a rg e t those middle school folks, we almost got that number covered and it would be less chaos if we had to break or stop and everything closes
down, the state closes down, the technology would be in the hands of a lot of those k i d s a l r e a d y, ” s a i d L e w i s . D i s t r i c t o ff i c i a l s s a y i f t h e district recycled the iMac computers, then the district would probably end up paying more just to get them prepared a n d t u r n e d o v e r. P l u s , t h e y s a y no matter how students return to class this fall, students will be provided their own device whether it be online or in the classroom.

Harvard: Southern COVID Surges Did Not Come From Visitors From North
Study: Arizona Is Most Resistant To Wearing Masks
(Cambridge, MA) -- Harvard researchers are concluding coronavirus case surges in southern states are due to premature reopenings. The university’s Global Health Institute debunked CDC Director Robert Redfield’s claim blaming the spikes on travelers coming down from northern states. Harvard said the common thread among states seeing large outbreaks is the relaxation of restrictions near the end of May led to an increase in early June. Redfield made the comments Tuesday during a virtual event.
Kohl’s Is Latest To Make Masks Mandatory
(Menomonee Falls, WI) -- Mask up in Kohl’s. Shoppers will be required to cover up at all stores starting Monday due to soaring coronavirus cases. It was the fourth retailer to reveal the new rule on Wednesday. Walmart and Sam’s Club also start Monday while grocery chain Kroger begins Wednesday. But these aren’t the only places. The list already includes Costco, Apple, Dollar Tree, Best Buy and Starbucks.
(Phoenix, AZ) -- It looks like people in Arizona are the most resistant to wearing masks as a way to protect against coronavirus. That’s what a new study shows. The website ‘Survival at Home’ looked at 150-thousand Twitter posts to find hashtags like “no mask” or “burn your mask.” Then they made a mapped out the states most against covering up. Arizona came out on top followed by Nevada, Florida, Idaho and Maine.
McConnell: Next COVID Bill To Emphasize Getting Kids Back In School
(Undated) -- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is prioritizing support for schools when it comes time for a new coronavirus relief bill. He acknowledged the heavy emphasis on education will be “costly.” McConnell said if kids are not back in school this fall, then there will be “job issues.” In the next package, he said he is open to more direct checks but added leaders made a mistake in the last bill, making it more attractive for people to stay home than to work. McConnell also expressed total faith in Dr. Anthony Fauci [[ FOW-chee ]], who has been criticized by members of the White House.

TUESDAY JULY 21, 2020
Guillermo “Willie” Arias Willie Arias of Seguin, Texas, unexpectedly left his heartbroken family on July 14, 2020 at the age of 61. He was born July 23, 1958 to Jose and Jesusa Arias. Willie is preceded in death by his parents and his four brothers; Rick, Herman, Eugene and Pete. He is survived by his wife, Christy Arias. His son, Willie Arias Jr. and wife Vida. His daughter, Erika Arias-Flores and husband Roger. Grandchildren; Julianna, Jesse, Saryna, Ian and Greyson. Sisters; Gloria, Maria, Mary Lou, Juana and Candelaria. One brother, Manuel and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Where to begin, Willie was a loving husband, dad and grandpa. He wore his heart on his sleeve and his smile could light up a room. He was a dedicated and hard-working floor installer for 43 years (he was the best at what

he did). He took so much pride in the work he did and it showed. He loved going to work every day and having his son work beside him for the last 20 years. Don’t get us started on his Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs. Every year he said his BOYS were going to the Super Bowl and he had all the confidence that they would win. He enjoyed going to the Cowboys and Spurs games. On August 5, 1978 he married the love of his life Christy. It only took a quick four months of dating for them to know they wanted to spend forever together. They did numerous things together and were inseparable. They could dance the night away. Any chance they could get they were dancing, even if it was on their front porch. They had endless trips and always made sure to make time for each other. He made sure to spoil his wife, so much so that he would sit and watch QVC with her (I think he loved it more than she did). He was a phenomenal dad and always went out of his way for his son and daughter. He showered his kids with so much love. The time he spent with his family was not enough, he always wanted more. He hugged his kids every time he saw them and never forgot to say “I love you.” He was proud of his kids and loved how happy they were, their happiness was his
happiness. His son was his best friend and they shared many moments together. His dad has always been his hero. His hope and prayer is to live up to the man and father his dad was. His daughter was and always will be daddy’s little girl. She cherished her dad and the moments they shared. So many memories that will not be forgotten. They laughed; they cried and he loved her unconditionally. Her dad was a man like no other and he was her first love. He showed his family the true meaning of love. He adored his family and loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. He cherished each and every one of them and they were the light of his life. His grandkids loved spending every minute with him, from going to the park or a trip to the store to get ice cream. He had a special bond with each one of them. He loved having his lunch dates with Juli and she loved dancing with her grandpa. He would say ‘that little girl has a special place in my heart’. Jesse (papas) has a love to dance his Ballet de Folklorico and grandpa couldn’t wait to see him perform. Jesse enjoyed their one on one time together and the conversations they had. Grandpa enjoyed watching Saryna perform at the football games for the Matador Band. He looked forward to the Friday night games. Saryna will always remember her grandpa’s goofy dances when he

would walk in the room. Ian was always his grandpa’s sidekick. He was ready to help with yard work and help his grandpa fix things. Ian and grandpa would always play fight to win grandma’s attention. The youngest is Greyson who is six and won’t have those amazing moments and memories like his siblings and cousins. Greyson remembers the trips to the park and going to Wal-Mart because he knew grandpa was going to buy him a toy. Willie had a sense of humor out of this world and always kept us laughing with the crazy things that came out of his mouth and his silly jokes. He will always and forever be missed by everyone. We were not ready to say good-bye and he left a hole in all of our hearts. It gives us a sense of comfort to know as he entered the gates of heaven his family was there with open arms. This is only a part of Willie’s legacy and our stories could go on and on. You will be forever missed. We love you! A Memorial Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at Palmer Mortuary. Due to COVID-19, every guest will be required to wear a mask and a 45 person maximum can be accommodated at once in the funeral home chapel.
