Shots fired at area party

Search is on for multiple suspects who reportedly arrived armed

(Guadalupe County) –Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Investigators continue to piece together exactly what happened at an area party in which three people were left shot and injured.

The incident was reported at 2 a.m. Saturday in the 5900 block of FM 1117.

According to deputies, they arrived and learned that during the party, that contained between 50 to 80 people, approximately 6 to 8 male subjects arrived wearing ballistic vests, ski masks, and several were armed with firearms.

During the party, these subjects were allowed to shoot on the back end of the property. As the party continued, they say the male subjects began to point

their firearms at other party members. At some point, this escalated into a verbal altercation which led to shots being fired.

According to party goers, the males were from San Antonio and left the scene in a blacked out larger SUV.

SISD Trustee to depart for temporary contract-job in Alaska

Bright committed to staying involved despite not being physically present

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees will be trucking along these next two months without one of its own. District 7 Trustee Josh Bright on Saturday departed for a short term contracting position along the Bering Sea in Alaska. Bright, who served in the military, says although he won’t physically be present on the school board until Oct.1, his commitment to the district will be ongoing.

“I will still be in my role as a board member, I just won’t be present at the meetings. I will still be looking and reading through the agendas, and I will still be going through all of the items, participating in the meetings and with the board as much as I possibly can during this time. I’m just asking for a little bit of patience with my constituents. If they need something

from me, to give me one or two days to get back to them versus like right now, I am able to do it rather quickly,” said Bright.

Bright says this job goes hand in hand with what he was doing while in the Navy. Plus, he says it

was just too good of an opportunity to pass up for his family. He says the decision to accept the job was reinforced with the district’s support and acknowledgment that he could still be involved in the district’s decision-making while away.

“I’m not going to be completely untouchable. I will still be able to check my emails and get on Facebook and do all those things and if I have to, there is a way for me to place phone calls and call people. It’s not like I’m going to a dark hole somewhere and no one will be able to get a hold of me,” said Bright.

Seguin ISD selects, begins negotiations with contractor for new athletic complex

(Seguin) – Contract negotiations have officially begun for the construction of Seguin High School’s new baseball and softball complex. Leading the pack of sealed bids was local contractor The Koehler Company. The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved the start of negotiations between

the local company and Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez.

Providing insight into the process and bringing the recommendation of the Koehler Company to the school board was Perla Romero, the Seguin ISD director of business services. During her recommendation, Romero shared new developments in the voter approved price tag.

“This one is going to be a little different because as you all know, the bond for the softball/ baseball field is for $7.5 million. However, due to the time that has passed and inflation, The Koehler Company which is the general contractor we are recommending came in at $9.6 million. With that being said, we are recommending that you

authorize Dr. Gutierrez to negotiate and possibly execute a contract with The Koehler Company as a general contractor for this project,” said Romero. Tony Hillberg, chief financial officer, says although the bid came in higher, the district remains optimistic that negotiations will work in the favor of both parties. Complex, pg. 3

Approximately 15 rounds were fired during the incident. Officials say all three subjects were injured with non-life-threatening injuries.

Two of the victims were treated and released at a local hospital. The third victim was transferred to a San Antonio hospital.

Investigators say the identities of the suspects are not yet known.

“The conversations that we are having at the administrative level right now is our architect and general contractor and Mr. (James) Pizana (director of facilities and maintenance) will work together line by line going through the details to find areas where we can get a product within the bond value with the understanding that we want the full scope but not necessarily upfront. Now whether we can do that or not, time will tell, and we will keep the board posted and so that’s why we are asking right now just for the opportunity to negotiate to see if we can come up with a product that will fit our needs within the available budget,” said Hillberg.

The two other companies participating in the bidding process included Hellas at $10.8 million and O’Haver coming in at $9.5 million. The overall selection was not only based on the price, but the overall score received by each company.

Those scores included Koehler Company 60; Hellas 51 and O’Haver 53.

The scoresheet rated price, overall experience, experience with Seguin ISD; last five projects, project team, safety, overall grasp of project and sub-contractors to be used.

Trustee Cinde Thomas-Jimenez says she was excited to hear that the Koehler Company had topped the list of bids. She says the company has always come through in meeting the needs of the district.

“I just want to say how happy I was to see their name on this half sheet. They saved us when we were building the high school. Ya’ll really did so I think it’s just fitting that the Koehler Company finishes out the footprint and thanks for the Koehler Company for always striving to improve the Seguin ISD. You are part of the Matador Family,” said Jimenez.

The project will return the baseball field to the high school campus. The team for several years has played at the city of Seguin’s Smokey Joe Field located at the Seguin Events Complex. The complex will also include a new softball field. The athletic complex will be located south of the campus off of East College Street.

Montanez

Flora B. Montanez, age 83 of Seguin, passed away on July 20, 2023. Flora was born on October 13, 1939, in Seguin, Texas, to Anita (Rojas) and Julian Belmarez.

Flora was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson, Refugio Sosa, III, sisters, Rosa Torres, and Geronima Belmarez, and brothers Steve Velasquez and Julio Velasquez.

Survivors include her daughter, Erlinda Sosa and, husband Ray, Jesse Montanez, Jr. and, wife Cynthia, Johnny Montanez, Sr. and, his wife Sarah, James Montanez, and his wife Jeanette; sisters, Mary Medina and Gloria Moreno; ten grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.

Visitation will begin on Sunday, July 23, 2023, at 4 p.m. followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Deacon Nick Carrillo officiating. A procession will depart Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023, for the Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be James Montanez, Luis Belmarez, Christopher Medina, Randy Sosa, Johnny Montanez, Jr., and Jesse Montanez, III.

Alton Lee “Al” Reynolds, age 95 of Seguin, Texas passed away July 13, 2023. He was born on October 1, 1927, in Hemet, California, the oldest child of Levi and Lena Randal Reynolds. Al was a graduate of Porterville High School in California.

He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After retirement, he and his wife, Jean, served as Red Cross volunteers in times of natural disaster. They worked in several states, Saint Croix and Guam.

Al is preceded in death by his parents, brother Melvin Reynolds, and sisters Velta Egy, Kathryn Longenfeld, and Lena Mae Hubble.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 72 years, Jean Carroll Reynolds; children, Karen Willis (Steve), Craig Reynolds (Megan), and Marsha Reynolds (Lisa); grandchildren, Jacob Willis (Andrea), Devin Zettler (Ryan), Kyle Willis (Amanda); greatgrandchildren, Talan Zettler, Treyce Zettler, Carson Willis, Grayson Willis, Carter Willis, Kolin Springs, Kobe Garcia; brothersin-law, Cecil Hubble, Reesel Carroll (Linda), Gary Carroll (Mary), Philip Carroll; sisters-in-law, Marge Reynolds and Carolyn Pester, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving family members and friends. Cardenas

Maria Celia Cuevas Cardenas, 72, of Seguin, passed away peacefully in her home on June 29, 2023, surrounded by close family and friends, after a seven-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was born on February 11, 1951, in Michoacán, Mexico, to Juan Cuevas and Josefina Pantoja Cuevas and picked cotton as a young child with her family.

Maria lived her life as a hardworking, dedicated, faithful, and loving woman. She met the love of her life, Julian Cardenas, in Mexicali, Mexico, during the summertime of 1969. They first began dating in November of 1970. Julian proposed to Maria on December 12, 1970, and were married February 13, 1971. She loved visiting Los Angeles and Palm Springs, CA. Maria enjoyed hiking with her husband in the Martinez Mountain Range also in California and camping in the desert. Maria was an avid runner who ran half marathons and several 5Ks. After several years of study, she was granted naturalization on January 28, 1993, in San Antonio, Texas. She enjoyed visiting the casinos in Biloxi, MS, Eagle Pass, TX, and Kinder, LA. She was a wonderful mother who always looked after her children and did her best. A woman who was self-sufficient and never cared much about herself. Maria was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in August 2016 at the age of 66.

Maria is preceded in death by her father, Juan Cuevas, mother, Josefina Pantoja Cuevas, brother, Juan Cuevas Jr., and fatherin-law, Agapito Cardenas.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Julian Cardenas, daughters Jo Ann Cardenas and Nadia Josephina Cardenas, her grand-fur baby, Charlotte, and best friend, Gracie Gomez of Seguin. She will be sorely missed by her many family members, including nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the health care professionals at GRMC Hospice for their unwavering care for Maria throughout the final eight months of her life. Ms. Magali, Maria’s CNA, was her favorite staff member who could always make her sing and dance.

A private viewing was held July 3, 2023, at Lux Funeral Home & Cremation Services, in New Braunfels. A memorial service will be held later at the family’s residence in Seguin.

Drug Overdose Deaths Involving Both Cocaine And Opioids Spike This Decade

(Atlanta, GA) -- Drug overdose deaths involving cocaine and opioids together are up this decade. A CDC report says the rate of deaths from those drugs multiplied by seven from 2011 to 2021. The results showed that in 2021, nearly four in every five drug overdose deaths that involved cocaine also involved an opioid. But the rate of drug overdose deaths involving cocaine without opioids didn’t rise much over the same period.

Jury Convicts Florida Family For Selling Bleach Miracle Cure

(Miami, FL) -- A Florida family accused of selling their Miracle Mineral Solution for COVID, AIDS and Alzheimer’s through their Genesis II Church of Health and Healing is convicted in a Miami federal court. The jury needed just 30 minutes to find Mark Grenon and his sons - Jonathan, Joseph and Jordan - guilty of conspiring to defraud the U.S. Government and FDA, which carries a prison sentence of up to five years. Jonathan and Gordon were also convicted of violating federal court orders to stop selling the toxic bleach substance. It carries up to a life sentence. The four represented themselves, but Joseph was the only one who said anything during the trial, which was to say they’re appealing.

Weekend Workouts Boost Heart Health

(Chicago, IL) -- Doctors say it’s okay to wait for the weekend for a good heart workout if you’re too busy during the week. The Journal of the American Medical Association study said people who workout during the weekend saw heart failure risk drop by 38 percent compared to 36 percent of regular exercisers. Doctors say the main message is adults should still get at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per week.

CA Effort To Legalize Magic Mushrooms Now Collecting Signatures

(Sacramento, CA) -- A new California effort to legalize magic mushrooms is moving forward. The Secretary of State gave the all clear for a campaign to start gathering signatures. Nearly 547-thousand signatures are needed to get the proposition on the ballot and volunteers are at work in every county. The initiative would not only let doctors prescribe the mushroom, but allow people to grow it for recreational use. It would also clear certain criminal records related to mushroom charges.

Benefit Fundraiser

There will be a Benefit Fundraiser for Seguin City Council District 2 Member, Sonia Mendez from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Seguin Coliseum. Youth Co-Ed Golf Clinics

The Starcke Park Golf Course, in partnership with First tee Program Greater San Antonio, is hosting a series of golf clinics for youth this fall.
