Davila’s BBQ featured in Wall Street Journal
Family recipe represents Texas’ barbecue trinity of ribs, sausage, brisket By Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- The Wall Street Journal on Saturday featured Seguin’s own Davila’s BBQ in the newspaper’s salute to all things related to barbecue. Davila’s BBQ was chosen to be part of an article that appeared in Saturday’s “Off Duty” section of the WSJ.

of Corpus Christi of life-threatening flooding. The slow-moving hurricane was expected to bring torrential rain and a storm surge. The National Weather Service on Saturday night said that there was already significant structural damage being reported in Port Mansfield. Severe damage to a pier was also reported on North Padre Island. What really worried officials on Saturday was that there was a strong possibility that the storm could cause tornadoes. The storm surge could also reach four to six feet, and could be the highest in the area since Hurricane Allen in 1980.
(Austin) -- Texas Governor Greg Abbott spent Saturday trying to make sure that Texans stayed safe. Hurricane Hanna hit the Texas coast on Saturday, and Gov. Abbott voiced his concerns about dealing with the storm, while COVID-19 cases are still surging across the state. “As Hurricane Hanna approaches, the Lone Star State is taking swift action to support the communities in the path of the storm,” said Abbott. “We are closely monitoring the situation and working with local officials to help ensure they have the resources they need to keep Texans safe. I urge Texans in the region to take all necessary precautions and follow the guidance of local officials. I ask our fellow Texans to keep these communities in their prayers as they brace for this storm.” The governor urged residents, who may have had to evacuate over the weekend, to take all possible precautions to protect themselves from both the storm and the coronavirus. “I strongly urge you to remember to do everything that you can to protect your lives and loved ones from the trasmission of COVID-19,” said Abbott. Gov. Abbott says that that the
state had been preparing for storm, and they put plans into place to make sure that people could also stay safe during the pandemic. “To be sure that we were prepared in the event that a hurricane arise, and that preparation months in advance, is paying off today and in the coming days,” said Abbott.
Gov. Abbott stressed that people, who had to flee the storm, still have to also protect themselves from the virus. “Do not in haste take action that could cause you, a family or loved one to lose their life in the coming weeks to COVID-19,” said Abbott. The area being hit by the hurricane has seen a surge in coronavirus
cases in recent weeks, which raised additional concerns for the state. Gov. Abbott said on Saturday that anyone going to a hurricane shelter would have to be screened. According to reports, Hurricane Hanna slammed into the Texas coast with winds of 100 miles per hour after making landfall at 5 p.m. Saturday. Officials are warned residents south
Gov. Abbott held the press conference on Saturday at the Alternate State Operations Center in Austin where he provided an update on the state’s response to Hurricane Hanna. Prior to the press conference, the governor received a weather briefing on Hurricane Hanna from the Texas Division of Emergency Management’s (TDEM) meteorologist, as well as an update on response and preparedness efforts from state agency directors and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The governor also announced that he has issued a disaster declaration and has requested an Emergency Declaration from President Trump and FEMA for Public Assistance Category B (Emergency Protective Measures), Direct Federal Assistance, and Hazard Mitigation statewide.

Davila’s family of tradition of good barbecue shared by WSJ personality, but he’s also a successful author. His cookbook, “Cowboy Barbecue: Fire and Smoke form the Original Texas Vaqueros,” was a big hit. Davila says they are always trying to make sure they take care of their customers here in Seguin, while also looking for more ways to share their food with others. He says this story just makes him again grateful for their customers. He says he’s also grateful for all the support the he also has been shown over the years.
“Sometimes, it’s hard to say stop and smell the roses. With me, it’s always like, what’s next? What can I get at next? Sometimes I don’t know exactly what I’m chasing. But if I want to add anything, it’s just that I’m so absolutely thankful for the opportunity to get in
DAVILA, continued from page 1 He says Davila’s is special because it’s tied to family, culture and community. He says those things are what make them so unique. “It’s important to me, because this is who we are. This our legacy. This is what we get up in the morning to do. This is what we knew as kids. As a person and a family -- that’s what we do. We barbecue. We barbecue and we are supported by our beautiful community. We are a part of that Texas barbecue family and community,” said Davila. “Who we are is important to me, because I’m proud of who I am and I’m proud of my community. I definitely want to make sure that I always put that on my back, because that’s who made me.” Adrian Davila is not only a pitmaster and television
front of these platforms. It’s been quite an experience for me to deal with these publications and just dabble in this world that I never thought that I would be in. And again, I always want to be a good steward of my community and my family,” said Davila. Davila’s BBQ continues to expand its brand. It currently is offering its dry spice rub at HEB stores across the state. It’s also moving to offer customers a chance to take home bottles of their unique Davila’s Barbecue Sauce. Davila’s BBQ is located at 418 W. Kingsbury St. in Seguin. If you missed the feature in Saturday’s Wall Street Journal, you can obtain a digital copy of the newspaper online.

SCAC Statement Regarding Alternative Playing Seasons for 2020-21 Academic Year
(Lawrenceville, GA) – In an announcement made last week, the NCAA Division III Management Council – on a recommendation from the Playing and Practice Season Subcommittee – passed along a legislative proposal that would eliminate traditional and non-traditional seasons for all sports in 2020-21.
athletic opportunities for all sports impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Focus at this time is on conference-sponsored fall sports (men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball) that had their seasons suspended, and will include other sports that may be impacted with future decisions to be made by the NCAA, Conference and individual institutions.
This legislation, which remains subject to ratification by the Division III Presidents Council, effectively opens the door for fall sports programs to participate and compete in intercollegiate activity during the spring semester. “This is potentially great news for our student-athletes, especially those who participate in fall and winter sports,” said Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry. “We obviously have little control over how things may look at the beginning of 2021, but this legislative waiver gives us the chance to actively explore all options as we seek meaningful playing opportunities for our student-athletes in the spring semester. We are already hard at work to try and find a way to make this happen.” Anticipating the NCAA might move in this direction, the SCAC assembled a Scheduling Task Force last week to begin immediate planning for maximizing
“It no doubt presents a unique challenge – attempting to find the correct scheduling mix for fall, winter and spring sports across just one semester – but we are committed to an outcome that provides a quality experience for as many of our student-athletes as possible,” said Hanberry. “Obviously, as these discussions progress, the safety and welfare of our studentathletes, coaches and support staff will remain at the forefront of any decision we make.” The conference announced on July 16, due to health and safety concerns stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the suspension of NCAA intercollegiate competition during the Fall 2020 semester.

Fauci Says Coronavirus May Never Go Away
(Washington, DC) -- The nation’s top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci [[ FOW-chee ]] says COVID-19 may never go away. He spoke at a T-B Alliance event Wednesday, saying health officials may be able to “get very good control” of the virus, but it’s here to stay “long after we’re gone.” He says the increase in cases is bad for public health, but it’s helping researchers develop a vaccine. Fauci urges people to remain committed to fighting the virus as infections will continue to crop up.
Three More States Are Mandating Masks In Public Places

More than 30 states and Washington, DC now require face coverings in public. Ohio’s order begins Thursday. Minnesota’s starts on Saturday and Indiana’s begins Monday. A new Morning Consult-Politico poll found three-fourths of registered voters support mask mandates.

Q: You said last month to “water your lawn between sundown and sunrise.” Doesn’t that cause disease problems? A: You are correct. It could if the moisture sits on the grass all night. Most experts consider the very best time to be between 4 a.m. and
at the very latest 10 a.m. You want to water while the wind is down and before the temperature goes up so that less water is lost to evaporation. When I use my irrigation system, I have it set at 4 a.m. That way it is finished by 7. Aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu says that lawn watering should be to a depth of four to six inches. A half inch of water achieves this in sandy soils, while three fourths of an inch of water is required in loamy soils. To determine this, save up your cat food or tuna fish cans. Set out three or more cans in a straight line going out from the sprinkler. Run the sprinkler for a half hour, then measure the amount of water in each can. See how long it takes for the sprinkler to apply an inch of water. Don’t water again until the lawn has dried out.
Q: A friend gave me a small plant called wooly stemodia. Does it grow well in the Seguin area?
A: Stemodia lanata, also called gray-woolly twintip, is actually native to coastal and southern Texas
Wooly Stemodia
and adjacent Mexico according to Wildflower.org. The fragrant foliage looks sort of silvery or grey and has tiny white or lavender flowers. Stemodia spreads by stolons and can be seen in Seguin growing in the raised bed along Court Street between N. River and N. Crockett. It will die back in cold winters, but otherwise stays evergreen. Stemodia is perennial, semi-evergreen, and grows to one foot. It blooms from April to November. The plant uses low water, requires sun, and grows in sandy, acid, or calcareous soils of plains, brush lands, slopes, dunes and beaches and is saline tolerant. Sounds like it would do fine around here. It has high deer resistance. However, Wildflower does give a warning. This species accumulates selenium and is therefore poisonous to livestock if sufficiently concentrated (which means, of course, that we shouldn’t eat it either.) The plant can be propagated by seeds or softwood cuttings. Because stems root at the nodes, the friend who gave me my plant roots them by burying a node in the soil and letting it root bef ore cutting it.
Q: I read that we should start our fall vegetable garden now. Is that right?
A: Plants that will freeze should be started now. This includes eggplant, peppers, squash and tomatoes. My first freeze in 2017 was
Oct. 29; in 2018 it was November 14; in 2019 it was November 30. Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac says that the number of days from transplant to beginning of harvest is around 90, and to completion of harvest is around 120. If you subtract 120 days from Nov. 14, it means planting around the third week of July. Therefore, you should be preparing now.
