Cibolo robbery case turns into a murder investigation

remain vigilant

(Cibolo) -- A robbery case is now a murder investigation in nearby Cibolo.

A bank jugging incident remains a top priority for Cibolo Police Detectives.

They say 61-year-old James Doty died of injuries he sustained after being attacked and robbed by an unknown person while walking to his vehicle.

The incident happened on Thursday, June 15 in the 4400 block of Green Valley Road in Cibolo.

It’s another case of jugging.

Jugging is the term used to describe a crime where someone is

watching and following a person who they believe withdrew a large sum of money, who someone who they think might be traveling with large amounts of cash.

Cibolo police say based on bank video from Security Service Federal Credit Union, an unidentified black female wearing a surgical mask appears to be watching Doty conduct his banking business and then follows him out of the bank. The female then gets into a grey Chevrolet Impala that waits and follows Doty’s vehicle.

incident was reported just after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Upon arriving at the scene, the Hispanic male fled the store. He is described as standing 5’8 and is believed to be anywhere between 40 and 50 years old. Surveillance

footage show him with no facial hair and wearing a long sleeve blue shirt with an American flag, black pants and a blue ball cap.

Investigation, continued.

The Impala seen from the bank is caught circling the parking lot when Doty stops by a business on Green Valley Road.

Police say that’s when Doty exits the business and while entering his vehicle, a newer model gray Chevrolet Trailblazer drives up and stops behind Doty’s vehicle. A black male wearing a blue hoodie and a surgical mask exits the passenger side of the suspect vehicle and approaches Doty from behind striking him to the ground. A struggle on the ground is seen between the suspect and Doty before the suspect flees back to the Chevrolet Trailblazer with a white envelope in his hand, which is believed to contain the money that Doty had earlier withdrawn.

After the suspect flees from the scene, Doty is able enter his vehicle and drive away from the scene. Cibolo detectives say there were no calls to the police department to report the incident when it happened.

That call was not made until six days later on

Wednesday, June 21 when Doty apparently began acting strangely and suffered a fall.

On Thursday, June 22, officials say Doty’s symptoms began to worsen, and he was transported to a San Antonio area hospital for treatment.

While at the hospital, Doty fell into a coma and was placed on a ventilator. Doty reportedly died Wednesday, July 12.

This is yet another high-profile case of jugging in the area.

Seguin Police officials just last week announced the arrest of a couple from the Houston area, who were reportedly involved in jugging crimes here in this area. They say unfortunately, incidents of ‘bank jugging’ are on the rise across the country and they encourage residents to be aware of their surroundings, especially when withdrawing money from a banking institution.

Anyone with information on this latest jugging case should contact the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers Hotline at 877-403-TIPS (8477).

Jobs, jobs plus more jobs

Seguin hiring event scheduled today at Seguin Coliseum

(Seguin) – Landing a new job this summer might just be in the cards for you.

A job fair exclusively featuring Seguin employers will be held today at the Seguin Coliseum.

The Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is partnering with Workforce Solutions Alamo to host the Seguin Summer Job Fair today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Josh Schneuker, the executive director of the Seguin Economic Development, says today’s job fair promises to be a prime opportunity for job seekers to connect with approximately 25 prominent employers all from the Seguin area.

“It is a little bit different than some of our previous job fairs that we’ve had as we have previously partnered with some of our communities within the Northeast San Antonio Metro Area. So, we are really excited to continue to help them find the labor that they need in order to meet the demands that they have and bring this job fair a little bit closer to our community at the Seguin Coliseum,” said Schneuker.

Schneuker says each participating employer brings a high level of competitiveness to the table.

“They are very competitive in terms of pay. I think the thing is a lot of these companies are willing to bring folks on that have the work ethic, that show up to work on time, are willing to put in the hours and in return, the company is going to make the investment in the employee whether that obviously be big pay or advancing that person’s career through additional training opportunities but I think this is a great opportunity for our local area and our local residents to find those high demand, high wage jobs that are right in our own backyard,” said Schneuker.

This job fair brings together a diverse array of local employers offering immediate openings in an extensive range of job skills, representing exciting opportunities for job seekers in the area.

“Just come out and see what is out there. There’s a ton of opportunity. It’s not all in manufacturing. We have a diversified group of employers that are going to be in attendance. So, I think there is a little bit for everybody so just come with an open mind and I think that confidence as well. There is something out there for you and there is definitely a job available for you here in Seguin,” said Schneuker.

Participating companies include Angel Pest Control Inc., Community Council of South-Central Texas Workforce “Yes!" Program, United Alloy, CMC Steel TX, EPMP, Cavco Homes, Tyson Foods, Inc., Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, Republic Plastics, Guadalupe County Adult Detention Center, Master’s Electrical Services, Caterpillar, Navarro ISD, Valdez Barbershop, Seguin Housing Authority, Minigrip, Seguin ISD, EPMP LTD, Minigrip LLC, Alamo Group Texas PSSI, Vitesco Technologies, Hexcel Corporation plus more.

Schneuker says he hopes partnering with Workforce Solutions Alamo for this in-person job fair will help them to match job seekers with Seguin employers who have open positions ready to fill. He says aspiring job seekers are also encouraged to dress professionally and bring multiple copies of their resumes to make the most of their interactions with potential employers at today’s job fair.

The Seguin Coliseum is located at 950 S. Austin St.

No Word On Private’s Health

(El Paso, TX) -- An update could be coming on an Army soldier from Texas who crossed into North Korea and was taken into custody. The United Nations Command has started a conversation with the reclusive nation. It’s still not known what Private Travis King’s condition is or what it would take to get him back to Fort Bliss. He was being sent home last week after a drunken bar brawl but bolted from the airport. He joined a public tour of the Demilitarized Zone, and fled across the border.

Biden Officials Holding Meetings In Mexico On Opioid Crisis

(Washington, DC) -- Biden administration officials are in Mexico this week for meetings on the opioid crisis. President Biden’s homeland security adviser and other senior officials will meet with Mexican and Canadian officials to discuss joint efforts to fight the ongoing opioid epidemic. They’re also expected to discuss migration. This comes after Biden struck an agreement with Mexico and Canada earlier this year to crack down on the flow of illegal fentanyl.

Experts

Cast Doubts On Weight Loss Supplement

(San Antonio, TX) -- A popular injectable weight loss drug called Ozempic [[oh-’zem-pic]] is becoming hard to find, sending patients scrambling for an alternative. A supplement called Berberine is gaining steam on social media, but experts say it’s not a good replacement. Dr. Brian McFarlin of the University of North Texas has been running weight loss trials for years and says supplements can help, but only when combined with a lifestyle change. Berberine, he says, does not work on the body’s metabolism in the same way as Ozempic. Additionally, Dr. McFarlin says most of the claims about the so-called weight loss supplement have not been verified by large, peer-reviewed studies.

NJ Commission Will Study Social Media Effects On Kids

(Trenton, NJ) -- Governor Phil Murphy is creating a commission that will study the impact of social media on kids across New Jersey. The governor signed legislation that will set up the commission to look at the extent of social media usage both in and out of public schools, including the average time students spend on platforms. It will also look at how social media impacts students’ mental and physical health. The panel will be made of 19 members, and they’ll be required to release a final report that details its findings.
