Jury hands down 99 year sentence in deadly shooting of local teen

(Seguin) – A man is slated to spend the next 99 years behind bars for last year’s deadly shooting of a teenage girl. A Guadalupe County Jury on Wednesday sentenced Draven Rene Reyes, now 21-yearsold, to 99 years for the murder of Maekalyn Ann Marie Smith on April 4, 2022 at Seguin’s Park West.

The trial which began Monday finished up early Wednesday afternoon in the courtroom of State District Judge William “Bill” Old. Reyes was also handed down 50 years for the aggravated assault of her boyfriend who was alongside her during the deadly attack. The boyfriend, an 18-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Reports at the time indicate Reyes was riding in a vehicle with a pair of 21-year-olds Christanio Soto and Sahra Vega, when Reyes opened fire on the couple who was sitting at the park near the basketball courts located along San Antonio Avenue.

went into hiding and was not apprehended until about a week later in San Antonio by the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force. Both Vega and Soto were apprehended during a traffic stop conducted a day after the shooting. Both were also charged with one count of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The next court date for Soto and Vega is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 29.

Time to BEND & SNAP!

Legally Blonde opens tonight at the Texas

(Seguin) – It's time to bend and snap, Seguin! Legally Blonde, presented by Camp Broadway, opens at the Texas Theatre tonight. Fans of the film by the same title starring Reese Witherspoon are sure to enjoy a night of girl power decked in shades of pink.

Camp Coordinator Sheila Lucas shared that after a long stint of Disney shows, it was time for a change this year, and that's how Legally Blonde Jr. was chosen.

"We had so many beautiful, precious little girls that I wanted to see in pink," Lucas said. "Audiences will be entertained. They will see things that amuse and surprise them. They amuse us every day, and surprise us every day, but that's live theatre. That's what it's all about."

Thirteen-year-old Navarro ISD student, Liv Parrish, plays the title role of Elle Woods.

"The show is about a girl who tries to follow her love, but ends up getting into being a lawyer, and it gets better at being a lawyer," She basically finds who she is, like what's her real calling. I sing and dance in the show a lot. It's definitely a harder role because she's in every scene, so it takes a lot of work."

Soon-to-be Seguin High School freshman Caleb Pape is also starring in the show. Pape plays Emmett Forrest, a law associate who befriends Elle Woods (Parrish).

"He meets Elle and ends up helping her on her lawyer journey, and they end up falling in love at the end," Pape said. "I like meeting all the new people here at Camp Broadway. I like the singing and dancing –– it's fun."

Helping bring the show to life is Seguin native Aidan

Martinez. Having gone through every stage of Camp Broadway, from camp participant to counselor and now co-director, he makes it his goal to keep fun at the forefront for the kids.

"I feel like the reason the community should come see it is to show the kids –– one their support, and two ––that theatre is alive and loved in Seguin," Martinez said. "That way they know they are at the right place and where they're meant to be."

Legally Blonde Jr. opens tonight at the Texas Theatre and runs all weekend with shows at 7pm Friday and Saturday, and a 2:30 matinee on Sunday. Tickets can be purchased at Gift & Gourmet, Keepers, and the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce, or by visiting thetexas.org.

Kingsbury VFD inviting all to annual BBQ fundraiser, dance

(Kingsbury) -- Things will be heating up even more this weekend during the Kingsbury VFD's Annual Benefit Bar-B-Que & Drawing. The fundraiser is set for Saturday night at the volunteer fire department.

KVFD Auxiliary President Gail Younger says events begin with dinner at 5:30 p.m. and continue well into the evening.

"We have barbecue -- wonderfully prepared beans, pinto beans, our world-famous potato salad that the auxiliary prepares every year and of course your fixings with that -- your bread and pickles and tea and water and we have our silent auction that the auxiliary does. They have that set up inside one of the air-conditioned buildings. We have our live auction which starts at 7 o'clock which we already have received so many generous donations from the business owners and individuals in this area and once that is completed, Clint Taft and the Buck Wild Band starts their dance. It's a free dance Under the Stars. We have a beer garden, margaritas, cakes, pies, and a wonderful country store. We have a raffle which I can tell you the auxiliary has donated a fire pit which comes along with all the fixings for s'mores and a $50 gift card to Granzin’s and we have other gifts on the raffle as well," said Younger.

Younger says this year marks the 53rd anniversary of the annual event. She says the barbecue is more than just a fundraiser and welcomes everyone to come on by.

"It is certainly a homecoming for most people. This is a wonderful tradition that we do every year in July. People come back home from all over the United States. We've even had some people come back and visit from

Wanted, continued.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with Corey Evans Gill, 41, of Seguin who advised that he was the caretaker of the three individuals with mental disabilities.

During the investigation, it was found that Gill was acting as the legal guardian of these three individuals left in the vehicle.

Gill stated that he left the individuals in the vehicle for 20 minutes, and turned the car off so they would not drive away. Due to temperatures exceeding 100 degrees this day, officers say the individuals displayed signs of possible heat related injuries.

other places in the world where they happen to be living. Our fire department has a rich history of volunteers, family volunteers -- we are probably maybe into the fourth generation of family members helping with the fire department. I'm certainly the second generation. Both of my parents were involved, and my mom is still involved. We have a great history of that. Everybody knows each other. Even though we have a lot of new people moving in, we want them to come meet us and become part of our traditions," said Younger.

All proceeds go to help support the area fire department. As many realize, VFD's all over are working extra hard this summer as they continue to battle grass fires in this intense heat.

Again, serving of the meal begins at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday followed by the auction at 7 p.m. and dance at 9:30 p.m. DJ music by Bo Peep will also be provided from 1 to 5 p.m.

The volunteer fire department is located at 1066 FM 1104 in Kingsbury. The event is free.

Seguin EMS arrived on scene to monitor the individuals for any heat related emergencies.

On Friday, an arrest warrant was obtained for Gill for three counts of deadly conduct. The arrest warrant was issued by Guadalupe County Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Sheryl Sachtleben.

The whereabouts of Gill are unknown at this time.

The three individuals, ages 32, 76 and 53, were reportedly developmentally delayed to the extent that they would not be able to properly take care of themselves if necessary.

Seguin Police are asking anyone who may have information on his location to contact detectives at 830-379-2123 or the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous. The Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers can be contacted by calling 1-800-403-TIPS.

Biden Announces New Rule To Bolster Mental Health Access (Washington, DC) -- President Biden is pushing insurers to improve access to mental health care for Americans. Biden has announced a proposed rule to strengthen requirements so health insurers cover behavioral health at the same level as physical health. Biden at the White House said “there’s no distinction between breaking your arm and having a mental breakdown.” The president noted that mental health and substance abuse treatment is out of reach for many Americans. The rule is expected to be published in the Federal Register next week. It would then enter a 60-day public comment period before taking effect.

Study Links Heart Attacks With Extreme Heat And Air Pollution (Guangzhou, China) -- Doctors are warning that exposure to extreme heat and air pollution may double your risk of a heart attack. A study published this week in the journal “Circulation” looked at over 200-thousand heart attack deaths in a heavily-populated province of eastern China, and found there was a “significant” association with extreme temperatures and high levels of air pollution. The study suggested that older people and women were at higher risk.

Tornado Damage To Pfizer Plant May Cause Drug Shortages (Rocky Mount, NC) -- More than 30 drugs may face supply chain disruption after a tornado damaged a North Carolina Pfizer plant.
