Area couple sustain injuries during house fire

Man killed during three car collision in Seguin

(Seguin) -- A three vehicle collision on Interstate 10 West has claimed the life of a La Grange man.

(Redwood) – An area couple was transported to a San Antonio hospital following a structure fire Saturday afternoon in northern Guadalupe County. Guadalupe County Fire Marshal Patrick Pinder says multiple fire departments responded to the call at 1:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Poplar Road.

He says the two victims, a 77-year-old female and a 53-yearold male suffered burns on over 30 percent of their bodies. Both were transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center by San Marcos Hays County EMS. Fire, pg. 2

Seguin Police officials say the collision occurred just after 10 p.m. Thursday near the 606 mile marker on IH 10. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased individual on the highway.

After further investigation officers learned that the victim, 32-year-old Felix Isaac DelaRosa, who was heading westbound, had

exited his Dodge Durango after having a single vehicle collision. Upon entering the roadway, DelaRosa was struck by a Toyota Camry and Ford Expedition. DelaRosa was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin has been notified. Occupants of the additional vehicles were transported by Seguin EMS to a local hospital in stable condition. Officials say the accident remains under investigation.

Mission man charged with two counts of smuggling

(Seguin) – A traffic stop on Interstate 10 has led to the arrest of a man charged with smuggling undocumented immigrants through Guadalupe County.

Seguin Police say at approximately 4:15 p.m. Thursday, an officer with the Seguin Police Department Criminal Apprehension and Street Enforcement Unit (C.A.S.E) conducted the traffic stop on a Ford F-250 for a defective stop lamp. The vehicle was headed eastbound near the 615-mile marker.

Upon making contact with the driver, Seguin PD officials say the

officer observed two additional passengers in the vehicle. After further investigation, it was discovered that the two additional

passengers in the vehicles were undocumented immigrants. They included a 19-year-old male and an 18-year-old female.

The undocumented immigrants claimed to be citizens of Honduras and El Salvador. The two undocumented immigrants were transported and left in custody with the U.S. Border Patrol.

The driver, identified as Domingo Mena Jr., 71, Mission, was taken into custody, and charged with two counts of smuggling of persons. Mena was transported and booked into the Guadalupe County Jail.

Fire, continued.

“Upon arrival, San Marcos Fire Department, the York Creek volunteer fire department, Guadalupe County Fire Rescue, and the Martindale fire department observed a single-story mobile home 50 percent involved in flames. Fire crews began suppression efforts and were able to extinguish the fire without any issues and the fire spreading to any adjacent properties,” said Pinder.

The fire remains under investigation.

Time to plan those scarecrows, skeletons

(Seguin) -- It may still be summer with temps over 100, but us here at Seguin Main Street are dreaming of fall with its cooler weather, seasonal flavors, and family friendly festivals. We are in full swing getting prepared for all those fall festivals that are held in downtown Seguin.

One of those fun fall activities is the Downtown Scarecrow & Skeleton Display Contest. The competition began in 2000 as a partnership between Seguin Main Street and the Guadalupe County Fair Association as a way to tie downtown to the fair. The window displays go up the week of the fair parade which goes through downtown Seguin and the displays remain up until Pecan Fest at the end of the month.

“The fall is normally a busy time for downtown Seguin with numerous events that bring thousands of visitors to downtown, and the scarecrows and skeletons have always been a nice addition to the downtown streetscape to welcome those visitors,” said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB Director.

Any local business or organization is welcome to decorate a scarecrow or skeleton. If your business or organization is outside of downtown, the Seguin Main Street Program will assist in finding a location for your scarecrow or skeleton downtown.

It is a friendly competition, and all entries will be judged by our celebrity judges on Tuesday, October 3, so all entries need to be up by October 2. Entries will be judged on their creativity and uniqueness. Businesses are encouraged to make their display reflect their business, the fall season, or be fair themed. Entries should remain up until October 31.

To participate in the contest, you must complete a free entry form that can be found at the Main Street Program office at 116 North Camp Street or online at www.seguintexas.gov. All applications must be received by September 22.

Heat Invades Midwest As Wildfire Smoke Hangs On

(Undated) -- The blistering heat that’s been broiling much of the South and the Southwest is now invading the Midwest, pushing afternoon highs above 100 degrees. Forecasters are warning that the heat and humidity could last for days. Cities like St. Louis, Wichita, Kansas, and Kansas City will roast in temperatures ten to 20 degrees above average. The heat and humidity are making conditions even more miserable for people in a region already choking in smoke from wildfires in Canada. Smoke is fouling the air over Chicago where the air quality index on Tuesday hit a level considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Penicillin Shortage Could Lead To Public Health Emergency

(Undated) -- A penicillin shortage has health officials worried about a possible syphilis public health emergency. With supplies of the drug tight, doctors have been rationing treatment for the disease, prioritizing pregnant patients and babies. The Department of Health and Human Services is putting together a task force to examine the issue. Declaring a public health emergency could free up resources to help fight the problem.

Mitch McConnell Escorted From News Conference After Appearing To Freeze

(Washington, DC) -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says he’s fine after being escorted away from a Republican leadership news conference Wednesday. The Kentucky senator appeared to freeze after he had stopped talking during the news conference. Some of his colleagues then asked McConnell if he was okay before Senator John Barrasso held him by the arm and walked him away from the podium. McConnell later walked back to the news conference by himself. An aide for the senator said he “felt light headed and stepped away for a moment.” Earlier this year, McConnell spent time in a rehabilitation facility after he tripped and fell at an event.

Abortion Access Will Be On November Ballot In Ohio

(Columbus, OH) -- Voters in Ohio will decide whether to legalize and protect abortion rights. The Ohio secretary of state announced this week that Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights had submitted enough valid signatures to place a constitutional amendment proposal on November’s ballot. The amendment states “every individual has a right to make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions.” It would cover healthcare decisions like abortion and fertility treatment. It also adds that Ohio can’t prohibit, interfere or penalize people for exercising that right.
