Fundraiser helps to support local children’s shelter

The Voice of Seguin Today

Birthday celebration raises awareness, funds for TruLight Youth Village By Darren Dunn

in the midst of their crisis. The main point of our mission is that we are putting James 1:27, from the Bible, into action, which calls us to care for the orphans and the widows. So we are really working to make sure these kids, who are technically orphans. They are taken from their parents and into the ward of the state. We have been doing this over five years now. It’s huge. It’s a huge crisis. It’s a huge burden, but we do it to the best of our ability,” said Ajasin.

(Seguin) -- What do you give someone for their 44th birthday? Well, if person has dedicated her life to helping kids in crisis, you give her exactly what she’s asking for -- and that’s more money that can be used to help children right here in Seguin and Guadalupe County. Sondra Ajasin, heads up TruLight Ministries, which operates the only emergency children’s shelter in Guadalupe County. Ajasin will celebrate her 44th birthday on Wednesday, and she’s not asking for anything for herself. That just isn’t her way. Instead, she’s asking that people make donations to help support the important work being done at the TruLight Youth Village in the Seguin area. “At TruLight 127 Ministries, we work with kids in foster care. Kids who have been abused and neglected. Our whole goal is to provide them with love and safety and some security

If you’re not up on your Bible verses, here’s James 1:27, which Ajasin says sits at the heart of what they do. “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

Here are the new homes being added to the TruLight Youth Village in the Seguin area. The homes will provide 17 new beds for kids in Guadalupe County.

For years, local kids removed from their homes had been foced to leave Guadalupe County for short term and long term services while they are in the Child Protective Services system. Ajasin says the Village has provided a new place for those kids to call home. See TRULIGHT, page 2

TRULIGHT, continued from page 1 “We are the first place here in Guadalupe County to settle in and to really start to minister to these kids long term. So we have emergency shelter beds here at the TruLight Youth Village, and we have long term beds here for kids who can’t necessarily find their way into a foster home,” said Ajasin. The TruLight Youth Village has been struggling to raise money during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ajasin says she knows that they are not unique in this regard, but she says they have to look for more ways, like this birthday fundraiser, to sustain their efforts. “We are, of course, kind of strapped like everybody else right now, with the COVID tying our hands on what we can do (to raise money). We are really trying to work hard to find creative ways to raise funds, because we have now placed two more homes at our TruLight Youth Village, to be able to help more kids in our area. So that will give us an additional 17 beds here at the TruLight Village to help kiddos, who are in dire need of safety and love. We are working really hard to do that, because with COVID, there has been a decline in homes that will accept foster kids. But there’s been an uptick in the amount of calls and kids coming into care. So we are kind of in a crisis mode. We’ve been using a lot of social media and worldof-mouth to raise funds to help us to really get to impact the kids’ lives. That’s what we are here for, and we want to make sure

the electric and the water, (and the) septic line. We have to -- by fire code -- bring out a couple of huge tanks of water on the property. Getting those homes ready is now our job. We were blessed with the actual homes, but now we have to actually get them up and running and ready to go for the kids to come in and live here. So all of the money that we are focusing on right now is going into completing those homes, so that we are ready for kids. The number of calls, like I said, is increasing and what we are actually seeing is that there are large sibling groups coming in, and they are getting split up quite often, because there’s no place that can handle taking in three, four, five kids at a time. We are just really putting it in focus and finishing those two houses,” said Ajasin. Ajasin says they are nearing the $4,400 goal that she set for her birthday. She says it would be an even better gift if they were able to continue to raise money in support of A Gaga Ball pit that’s been installed at the TruLight Youth Village. the local children’s shelter, which we again The non-profit children’s shelter is raising money now to expand its should stress -- it is the only emergency children’s shelter in Guadalupe County. She says there’s some help from the the state, but the community support is vital to their operation. “We do have contract with the state. But we really do try to give our kiddos a quality of life,” said Ajasin. It’s a hard job, but it’s something

really don’t like to think about is that we have to make sure that we have the adequate amount of people here, not just the bare minimum, because sometimes our kids are really hurt and they really need someone to focus in on them. They really need some people there who can be oneon-one with them. So we’ve had to increase our staff and everything out here. Just to make sure the kids are fine. With COVID-19, we have been quarantined out here for the longest time. We have found creative ways

to get off campus some, but it’s still very hard on our kids. So we’ve had to increase staff just to be there for them and help them through this. A lot of us adults are struggling, so imagine what (it’s like for) kids that are going through trauma -- not being able to see their family and friends, and what they are going through. So just keep that in mind, when you are giving. Keep that in mind, when people are saying a prayer to remember our staff and our kiddos out here as you go about your day.” TruLight Youth Village isn’t just looking for financial support, but they also are looking for foster parents, who are willing to provide a home for children who are in the system. If you would like make a donation, you can do it via Facebook or via text message. The area’s top sports moments of 2019-20:

Seguin girls basketball - the season-ending three-game winning streak - Mike McBride, Sports Director (Seguin) - We continue to look back at the best moments in high school sports for the teams in the KWED/ Seguin Daily News coverage area that completed their seasons during the 2019-20 school year. The 10th installment of the Big Game Rewind series focuses on Seguin girls basketball. The Matadors showed steady improvement last season under first-year head coach Angela Brittain, but they found themselves in one of the toughest 5A districts in Texas. Seguin wasn’t quite able to crack the four-team playoff field that included powerhouses like San AntonioVeterans Memorial, Kerrville-Tivy, San AntonioWagner, and Boerne-Champion in District 26-5A.

The team’s best moment was really a series of moments - the season-ending three-game winning streak in the eight-day span from February 4-11. The streak started with a 40-to-19 blowout of San AntonioMcCollum to avenge a six-poing loss to the Cowgirls from January 3. The Mats went on to beat San Antonio-Memorial 47-23 and San Antonio-Kennedy 69-22 to give the program a spark going into the off-season. The team’s underclassmen played key roles in each of those wins. Freshman point-guard Reese Brittain led Seguin with 11 points against McCollum, while sophomore post Tresalyn Roberts finished with eight. Seniors Kaitlyn Ranft and Cyan Clack chipped in as well, scoring six points apiece. Roberts pumped in 12 points against Memorial.

The

afforementioned senior duo, Ranft and Clack, each put in eight, with Brittain scoring seven. Roberts outscored Kennedy by herself in the season finale with a game-high 24 points. Junior Liv Hernandez netted 12 to reach double figures. Ranft and Brittain barely missed the mark with nine points each. Seguin capped the season defensively with a fourth quarter shutout, outscoring the Rockets 20-0 in the final frame. The season ending winning streak lifted Seguin’s final record to 15-and-20. The underclassmen coming back showed promise for the upcoming year, and they gave a well-deserved positive sendoff to a group of seniors who played under four head coaches in four seasons. The combination of those factors make the three-game winning streak in February the Matadors’ best moment of the 2019-20 season.

She was also preceded in death by her first love, Tom Even, with whom she experienced young love and married in 1959. Tom gave Pat three beautiful children who survive her - Mark, Paul (Tina) and Libby (Dane) Even Ferrell. In 2011 she lost her husband of 18 years, Bill Bender, who shared with her his three children. Bill showed her the world, spoiled her, and took care of her so well. Pat loved Bill dearly and she grieved for him desperately. She is survived by her step-children Bill Bender, Debra (Michael) Seiler, and Richard (Michelle) Bender. Pat had so much to give and she gave it all for her children, and then her grandchildren: Chris (Katy), Derek (Kristina), Alan (Amy), Jason (Shay), Eric, Michelle (Murray) Bender Godfrey, Russell (Julie) Seiler, Austin and Shelby Bender. Stories will be told to her eight great-grandchildren. Pat taught her kids good manners and they felt the disgrace of “that look” from mom when they did wrong. She taught her kids to be respectful and to say Yes, ma’am and Yes sir.

She taught them the names of trees and how to shoot a bullfrog between the eyes with a .22 rifle from across the tank. So much wisdom she passed along. Pat grew up in Longview, Texas with her parents, four sisters Libby, Nancy, Dana, Cecile - and one brother, Buddy. Her momma was strict and didn’t take no lip. Patsy was both her Daddy’s little girl and a tomboy. She loved wearing a frilly girl’s dress as much as climbing the tallest pine tree. Pat graduated from Longview High School in 1956 then moved to San Antonio where she graduated from Incarnate Word College in 1960 with BS degree emphasizing Home Economics. After having 3 kids, moving to Seguin and freelancing for a bit as a home decorator, she began working for the Child Welfare Department in 1968. In July 1984 she obtained her Masters in Social Work degree from Our Lady of the Lake University. She retired after 27 years of working for the State of Texas, ultimately as the Operations Support Director for the Child Protective Services. She was appointed Hidalgo de San Antonio de Bexar for a lifetime of service to her community in 1980. In her younger days she was a champion basketball player, cheerleader, poet and later in life an award winning baker and the best mom on the planet. On her wall hangs so many awards and certificates, including the flag of the State of Texas, flown over the capitol in her honor. She was a member of Zonta International Club, Guadalupe County Republican Women, St. James Catholic Church Parishoner, and a member of the ACTS Retreats.
